Alton & Districts Playgroup 50th Jubilee On the 7th of July Alton & Districts Playgroup will reach the milestone of 50 fun filled years. To mark this occasion a morning tea will held at the Alton Hall on Thursday 4th July from 10am, and all who have had connections to Playgroup over the years are warmly welcome to join us. It all began back in the late 1960’s when Alton was a hive of activity & industry, with Alton Dairy Factory in full swing & employing many locals, the Alton School still open, Post Office, Hotel, a fine Rugby team and smaller size farms employing more people. So it was not surprising that when the first public meeting was held back on 30 October 1968 to discuss the need for some form of pre-school child care education, an energetic group of young mothers stepped up to the task. At the time they never realised they were creating something that would continue for so many years, adapting to the changing needs of the community around it. The inaugural Committee members were: Pam Fowler, June Wallace, June McAree, Gladys Nyssen, Yvonne Hurley, Elsie Newell & Mary Hurley. The first letter June McAree received back from the Child Welfare District Officer in January 1969 is an interesting read, with the sentence ‘The setting up of a Child Care Centre is a fairly involved process’ in extra heavy type, implying that perhaps they didn’t realise what they were commencing. But this did not deter them. And they had 11 children on the role when they opened the doors in July, and 17 by the end of 1969, for the twice weekly, morning sessions. These are the children of 1969, Alton Playgroup way back then: Shane Hurley, Michael O’Neil, Sandra Nyssen, Gail Wallace, Yvonne McAree, Maria Hurley, Christine Hurley, Joanne Newell, Sally Creed, Joy Herewini, Jodi Northcott, Murray Goodson, Leanne Goodchap, Leah Back, Bruce Fowler and Marion Newell. From the beginning they had the use of the Alton Rugby Club Rooms during the week of which is still the location for Alton Playgroup today. The toys all had to be put away for the weekend rugby games. They received no government grants, but instead held card evenings, housie nights, raffles and a fundraiser Cabaret, which was so popular that it became an Annual event, and the tickets sold before they were printed. Catherine Koubaridis told me about one ‘sell out’ Playgroup Cabaret they had at the Hurleyville Hall (they were usually at Alton Hall) where the tickets were sold for $5, it was BYO, but still they made loads of money that night. And even more when they took all the empty bottles & flagons back to the Alton Hotel – back when recycling was profitable & local! These were times when every last cent counted, & looking through the old accounts, they were meticulous with expenses – nothing was wasted or unaccounted for. Before long they had a good collection of toys & equipment reached the required standards. By the early 1970’s they were in a financial position to appoint a paid supervisor, which meant children could be dropped off for 3 sessions a week, 2 mornings and 1 afternoon. Liz Sullivan was the first in this position, then Francie Hurley. Francie remembers the fee for each child was 10c. This would cover morning tea too. She always had at least 1 parent to help her, & they would often have 10-15 children. Different activities were thought up everytime, & outdoor equipment back then was minimal – sandpit, swing & bikes, but this didn’t stop many hours of good times. Playgroup continued to function in this way with the roll reaching 20 by the seventh year, and the Annual Cabaret being the social event of the year. 1979 saw Paki Hopkins take over as Supervisor and the beginning of twice weekly sessions owing to a declining number of pre-schoolers in the area. On leaving the district, Paki was replaced by Pauline Klaassen. Roll numbers continued to decline, the Annual Cabaret disappeared until finally at the AGM in 1979, it was apparent the group was in jeopardy. Following this meeting the group went into recess until a public meeting was called in February 1980, to decide whether or not to let the licence lapse when it fell due in March. As a result of this meeting the Pre School Group resumed with Val Sutherland supervising the children one afternoon a week. By the early 1980’s Alton, like many other small towns at the time, lost its Dairy Factory, when it merged with Kiwi. And the Alton Rugby Club also ceased after about 90 years. From this time the Playgroup had full use of the Alton Rugby Club rooms, and more permanent outdoor play equipment was installed. But the Playgroup numbers were still dwindling, until the mid-1980’s when more Manutahi & Kakaramea children began to attend. By the end of the 1980’s saw resurgence in the popularity of Alton Playgroup, with the attendance of some good large families such as the Werders, Buhlers, Wards, etc, meant the role was healthy again. By this time the structure had changed back to how it was in the beginning, with Parents all being present the whole time & running the once weekly, morning session. In 2015, ownership of the building was officially handed from the Alton Rugby Club to the Alton & Districts Playgroup. In 2016 Playgroup was temporarily moved to the Alton Hall

while the Playgroup underwent renovations to the kitchen and bathroom, and new windows were installed. Alton Playgroup continues today with great numbers and fulfils a huge roll within the community. Current playgroup President, Yoana Werder says “We have a great group of families currently attending Playgroup, with 27 children on the roll and more that pop in for a visit when they can. The families come from as far as Hawera and Waitotara. Playgroup is a great place for children to explore and learn, and just as importantly it provides a safe place for parents to relax and meet other parents”. The playgroup forms the foundations of a fantastic support network for parents, particularly those who are new to the community. In the last decade the main fundraiser has been the Annual summer Alton Playgroup Touch Tournament, which was held in the old Alton School field & now in Den Hurley’s paddock. Players & Supporters come from all over the province; a lot of them are ex Playgroup children. Competition is intense, sponsors generous and locals happy to open their pockets for this valued and enduring organisation. Playgroup is also fortunate to have the use of Nelly’s pool in term one to run its fundraising Water Confidence Lessons for all children in the community, aged 6 months to 12 years. Alton Playgroup operates every Thursday during the school term. 9.30am-12noon. All families with children between the ages of 0 and 6 years are welcome. The committee would love to see new families come and join playgroup. For further information about Alton & Districts Playgroup please phone Yoana Werder on 027 484 2488.

Last month I mentioned why God does not intervene in our lives. This is a curly one! But here is one of several reasons why God allows us to do the things we do. See, God is love, now love does not control someone, nor does it encroach into their space with obligations i.e. if you do such and such, then I will be nice to you! Sort of thing. God’s love is such a powerful love that He, Father God, in a sense, ties His own hands behind His back, so that He doesn’t interfere. So combined with this magnificent love He has for every human being, one very definable quality that we, His created, haven’t fully embraced, is our Sovereignty! Not as in Her Majesty the Queen, no this is the ownership that God has given to us, to allow us to make free decisions. We all have to make decisions on a daily basis, but how many are made from a free spirit? Not under obligation or intimidation, fear etc but from a health choice. God really has no other option I He has to be true to Himself (ice is getting a bit thin!) because He will not make us love Him. He will not strip us of a free choice whether we choose to love Him or reject Him, He has no option but to allow us to do whatever we choose, all because, strange as it may sound, it is purely and only because He loves us. Love does not control, exhort or place wrong agendas upon us, it is so powerful, it causes us to exercise our God-given sovereignty to do whatever we desire! Now that is love! We get to choose; His love allows us to do this. Wo do we drive home drunk and risk some unnecessary accidents? Do we willingly place ourselves outside of life’s/community boundaries of decent and acceptable behaviour, thereby shoot people, abortions, murder and the list just gets more detestable? But does God care? Yes! He most certainly does, He cares that parents bring their children up the way they understand, without do-goodies interfering, with the belief as a parent you have done your best to put them on the straight and narrow. Then as young adults, of course, their sovereignty kicks in. Father God knows what being a father is all about, the old saying “if you love someone you set them free” that’s basically exercising your and their Sovereignty. Freedom to choose and also to be held accountable. God is not being held accountable for your choices – you are! You will certainly be held accountable to Him one day. The chaos and pain throughout the world at present is NOT God’s doing, nope! We have to take ownership of all the mess we are making, busted lives, broken homes, greed – me, me me! Killing, busting other people’s dreams etc. We’re screwing up big time! But all is not lost because God has such a huge reservoir of love that even after all this muck that we’ve created, we can then come back to Him and say sorry God, I screwed up big time, please forgive me! And yes, His love kicks in big time at this point and He does forgive us. Not wanting some compensation because you hurt my feelings or such, just a beautiful love that covers a multitude of sins, complete forgiveness. God loves us. He created us for one loving reason, so we could be united together for eternity and God wants / desires so much for you and me to be in this beautiful relationship, because when we are in this exquisite place, killings, abortions, suicides, every evil choice we make … we won’t do it. Love is bigger than death, pain, loneliness, depression and every other man caused illness! No more tears! What a lovely thought. It’s yours right this day if you so choose, exercise your sovereignty for your good pleasure with Jesus Christ for ever and ever! Simple, no more pain, just life at its fullest in God Almighty, yours if you so decide? Why not? Love overcomes everything – God’s love.

Gallery Patea Our winter hours are 11am until 4pm on Wednesday to Sunday. The month of June sees our new exhibition of wearable art on display plus work by a new young local artist. Jeremy’s colourful drawings of dragons and their riders are very unique. A workshop for children is held on the first Sunday of every month and is becoming very popular. If you would like your child to attend, please book at the Gallery during the above hours. The next workshop is this Sunday the 2nd of June. An Art Group has recently been set up and runs on alternate Tuesdays from 12 midday until 4pm. The next meeting day is on the 11th June. This is for people who would like to “have a go” but do not have the confidence to go to a more formal art class. It is also for anyone who would like to join in with other artists and just have time to paint together. Skills and knowledge will be shared and information given to any who need it. All are welcome. If children come they must be accompanied by an adult because the classes are held in the Gallery itself where exhibits have the potential to be damaged. A stone carving workshop was held recently and another will run as soon as there are sufficient registrations. Please register your interest at the Gallery during open hours for either the Stone Carving workshop or Art Group.

The value for money is hard to beat. Some of the elements you can expect are an impressive set that will take you to 1930 New York, professional sound so you won’t miss a note, stunning lights including a LED screen and costuming that will transport you back in time.

Being taken on that journey and losing yourself in a show for a couple of hours is part of the magic of theatre. The high calibre of singers in this show, across all roles is worth the ticket price alone. And leading from the front will be Brenna Johnson and Niamh O’Sullivan as our two Annie’s. The show has two Annie’s and also two sets of orphans as it is a very demanding show for the younger cast members. Between Team Niamh and Team Brenna there are 18 young actresses, the future of theatre in South Taranaki looks very strong with the talent and commitment been shown by all these young stars. To find out who is in each team, go to hawerarep.org and look under Annie, and the team lists, times and dates of their respective shows is in the children’s performance schedule. Another star of the show is “Sandy” the dog. Not at all put off by the mantra of not working with animals and children, director Shaun Campbell found his canine actor in New Plymouth, and Sandy has been working hard and only requires some treats and his own toilet! Shaun Campbell is thrilled with how well the cast and crew have worked to bring the show to the high standard he had set out to achieve, and he can’t wait for audiences to be able to enjoy the labour of love that is directing a show. “Annie” is a family friendly musical and, with this in mind, there are four matinees with various times, as well as six night shows. Come along and enjoy the escapism of theatre and let “Annie” fill you with optimism and some catchy tunes. The show will be held in the very well-appointed Hawera Memorial Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online from ticketdirect or from the I-Site in Hawera. The show runs from Friday 7th to Saturday 15th June. So, don’t wait until “Tomorrow” to get your tickets, do it today. Thanks to all the helpers who came along to prepare and pack the hangi. Thanks to club members who sold all the hangi tickets and a big thank you to Peter TeNgahue and his team for cooking the hangi. They were a full meal and delicious.

Patea Cup Qualifier

Another Patea Cup Qualifier round was played on the 18th May and windy conditions prevailed. The best nett scores were Nick Williams 70 J Bright 73 and Ray Finlay 76.

Ladies v Men

We only had a small turnout due to members on holiday so a combined stableford with drawn partners was played. The best scores were Barbara Hill and Nick Williams 74 points. Carolyn Davidson and Jeff Bright 74 points. Verna Bourke and Phil Cassidy 71 points.

Club Championship Matchplay Finals

The finals were played on Saturday 11th May. Fine weather prevailed and the course was in good condition. The senior men’s finalists were Aarun Hughes and Darcy Faiers both of whom had not played much recent golf. After 18 holes Darcy had a 1 up lead and he continued to play par golf for the next nine holes but Aarun, with birdies at holes 3 and 7 was 2 under par and took a narrow 1up lead. Darcy birdied the 28th hole to square the match. Aarun birdied the 30th and 32nd holes to regain a two up lead but Darcy reduced the lead to one on the 33rd hole where Aarun dropped his only shot to par. Another accurate iron shot by Aarun on the 35th hole set up another birdie and Aarun won the senior title the winning margin being 2/1. Aarun scored a 4 under par 69 for his afternoon round and Darcy scored a 1 under par 72 so it was good golf by both players. The intermediate men’s finalists were Gerald Rutten and Steve Honeyfield. Gerald scored a 6 over par round of 79 which was very good golf and had a four up lead after 18 holes. Play was very even after the lunch break and Steve was unable to close the margin and Gerald won the intermediate title the winning margin being 5/4. The junior finalists were Casey Whanau and Harvey Gibbs. Harvey had a 1up lead after 18 holes but lost his rhythm after the lunch break and Casey had a 2up lead after 27 holes. Casey continued to play well and after 32 holes had a 3 up lead and when both players parred the 34th hole the title went to Casey the winning margin being 3/2. The ladies senior finalists were Gareth Hughes and Kath Honey field. Play was very even over the first 18 holes and Kath had a 1 up lead at the lunch break. After lunch both players played very good golf. Gareth played that 9 holes only 2 over par and Kath played those holes 5 over par so Gareth had a 1 up lead. Gareth lost the 30th and 31st holes when Kath made pars. The scores were even for the next 3 holes but an error on the 35th hole by Gareth when she scored a six allowed Kath to win the senior title the winning margin being 2/1. The ladies intermediate finalists were Barbara Hill and Ev Gibbs. The match was very close over the first 18 holes and Barbara had a 1 up lead. Over the next 9 holes Ev won five holes and Barbara won 3 holes so Ev had a 1 up lead. The players continued to exchange winning holes but wins to Ev on holes 33 and 34 gave her a two up lead and when the 35th hole was halved Ev had won the Intermediate title the winning margin being 2/1. The ladies junior finalists were Carolyn Davidson and Win Finlay. They played over 18 holes only. After 9 holes the match was all square. Win went 2 up after 11 holes but then the wheels came off. Carolyn won holes 15 to 17 to take a 1 up lead and the 18th hole was halved so Carolyn won the junior title the winning margin being 1up. The limit men’s finalists were Warren Sanson and Gerald Davidson. Warren took a while to settle down. After 6 holes Gerald was 6 up and then Warren won the next 3 holes to be three down after nine holes. Warren continued his good form in the last 9 holes and after 12 holes the match was square. He won holes 14 and 16 to take a 2 up lead and when the 17th hole was halved Warren won the limit title the winning margin being 2/1 after an astonishing comeback.

McGuinness Cup

The 50th and final McGuinness Cup was played on a very well-groomed Patea links on Thursday 16th April. 105 players competed but a very strong westerly wind swept the course all day and made scoring conditions very difficult. The runner up team was Pungarehu the team being A Rothwell, J Vanderpoel, J Gilligan, S Fleming and A Crowley scoring 379. ANZAC Day 2019 ANZAC Day 6.30am – the battle between night and day has ended. Dawn emerges triumphant and brings the muffled echo of marching feet. The wairua (spirits) of our tupuna (ancestors) are approaching from the mists of time. Our heroic warriors have arrived under the escort of the humble. The karanga (call) of sorrow and welcome vibrates through the peaceful surroundings. A challenge is issued in traditional manner, all is quiet and serene in acknowledgement. It is time to remember and honour those who offered and gave their blood and lives so we can live in peace and harmony. The Last Post is sounded, the New Zealand flag lowered to half-mast and a minute’s silence is proffered as a sign of respect to the fallen and their comrades who have now joined them. The haunting, mournful yet beautiful 28th Maori Battalion hymn “Ave Ihu” is sung by the local Maori people and the gathering. Karakia (prayer) is offered. The reveille is sounded, and the New Zealand flag is raised to full mast. A new day has begun. Speeches and dedications were offered to the past and present. “Abide with me” and “Amazing grace” were sung by the faithful congregation. Wreaths were laid in honour of the men and women who died and suffered during the Great Wars. Jim Ngarewa and moko laid a wreath on behalf of Ngati Ruanui iwi. I hope one day Nga Rauru will do the same. I laid a wreath acknowledging and honouring both Maori and European who laid down their lives and those who suffered during the Taranaki and New Zealand Land Wars of the 1860s. they deserve recognition – they gave their lives for us. Finally, a march past the Cenotaph with eyes left in respect of the crosses displayed. A flypast of three aeroplanes in formation ended the service. It was humbling to see so many familiar faces and families at the parade; some travelling considerable distances. This year also commemorated the 75th anniversary of the taking of Monte Cassino in Italy, where our glorious and heroic 28th Maori Battalion gained its world-famous accolades. Over three hundred of our warriors were killed and wounded. Many of that illustrious Battalion from the Waitotara through Hawera lived and worked and partied with us during the later years – suffering we know not what. They kept the horrors of what they endured and saw to themselves. They were true warriors. Remembered by so few and forgotten by many. Aue Aue!! I hope and pray we may see ore of our Maori people at the future ANZAC Days. Show the pride we have for our tupuna. They died for you, and you and yours. Aroha, James I didn’t go to Alton due to exhaustion and not feeling well. I know Harvey, Jacqui and others did our warriors proud!

Waverley Primary School Rimu Hub Writing

The learners in Rimu Hub have been focusing on adding detail to create a picture, showing through words where something is happening instead of telling. Here is a story about One Moment from a school holiday activity. Part way through Endgame, I began to hear an odd sound. A low, deep grumble. Swivelling my head towards the familiar sound, I had come to notice my mum’s jaw was wide open, with her head leaning back, letting out another smuggled groan. I quickly started to get spiders of anxiety crawl up my back. I hastily looked around and nudged my mother. Her brown eyes quickly swung open and her jaw clenched. Her head turned around in confusion before her eyes locked on me. Her expression was one of surprise. I couldn’t help but snigger. “Did I fall asleep?” she whispered, as popcorn crunching was heard behind us. “Yeah. You started snoring,” I replied. Mum let out an embarrassed smile with a short laugh. “Oh, sorry.” She looked back at the big screen and I shrugged it off. We both enjoyed the rest of the movie. Author: Anonymous

Technology

Our Year 7 and 8 students travel to Patea Area School once a week where they are given the opportunity to engage in a range of technology activities.

South Taranaki Rippa Tournament

We had a number of teams head along to the tournament in Hawera recently. We are so proud of our teams who conducted themselves with pride and ensured they maintained a positive, fair play attitude throughout the day. Well done!

Food Technology (cooking) with Mrs Singh Hard Materials (woodwork) with Mr Johnson

National Young Leaders Day

Our school and house leaders traveled to Palmerston North on Monday 20th May for the annual Young Leaders Day. The whakatauki (Maori proverb) that guided the day was ‘He aha te kai a te rangatira? He korero, he korero, he korero. What is the food of a leader? It is conversations.’ Speakers included Hana Tapiata, Dr Lehan Stemmet and Ronnie Taulafo. All the speakers talked about the importance surrounding yourself with positive influences and listen to those people, deafen your mind to negative influences. The day concluded with a performance by Kings. Leaders in Palmerston North

Senior Team Inquiry

Our inquiry focus for term two centres around sustainability. We are learning how we can all be guardians of our planet and take action to make sure we are upholding our kaitiakitanga values. To get the ball rolling we set the students off on a Amazing Race. As they completed each of the challenges, their team earned a puzzle piece that ultimately showed the many avenues of work we could pursue around being more sustainable.

Waverley Playcentre Back into a new term and we’ve had lots of exciting sessions so far! Our kids were lucky enough to receive two Duffy books each which they get to keep and take home! (They get four for the year.) We’ve had pretty good weather so far this term so we’ve had a lot of outside time before the weather turns yucky. They have been enjoying the sandpit and swings, the slides and the bikes. Also the outdoor mud kitchen which now has running water! We also had a Fonterra Milk Tanker come to visit, and the driver was actually Charli’s & Arlo’s Dad (two of the kids that come to centre). We’d like to say a big thanks to Michael and Fonterra for allowing him to come down as well as Amy, Kathy and Jenna who work for Fonterra & Farm Source who also bought flavoured milk for the kids, which they loved! They all had a turn jumping in the truck and tooting the horn and having a look around! They also had fun colouring and glittering some tanker pictures! Congratulations to Monica Palmer who won 1st prize in our Easter Raffle and Amanda McAree who won 2nd Prize. Thanks to everyone who supported our Playcentre and bought tickets If your interested in joining us come and take advantage of our three free sessions to see if it’s for you. We are open Wednesday’s & Friday’s 9am - 12pm. We also have Free Day Friday.

Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ “Excellence is not a skill, it is an attitude.” Ralph Marston Our school value ‘excellence’ has been shown consistently throughout the start of this term. Not only has a great level of success been shown in classes and recent events, our learners are aiming for excellence in attitude and leadership too. We are currently busy gathering, analysing, interpreting, and using information about students' progress and achievement to plan for the rest of the school year. It is a time to reflect as teachers on the effectiveness of our teaching practice and celebrate the accelerated progress of our learners at Whenuakura School. This term has already provided many opportunities for our learners –we have had Duffy Theatre in, participated in Impact Team workshops, visited the Patea LibraryPlus for storytime, started football lessons, and much more which you will read about below. We would like to welcome our new learners and their families to Whenuakura School: Cody Bolton, Malachi Hayward, Mekah Hayward, Crisharna Hollingsworth, Hemi Powell, Eric Vaughan and Kayson Williams Welcome also to our new members of our Board of Trustees and thank you to our previous board who worked tirelessly to ensure quality education for all. Thank you to those who continue to support our fundraisers. We encourage you all to come along to our Quiz Night on Friday 7th June.

We are Leaders - NYLD in Wellington

It is important for us to provide our learners with the opportunity to grow their leadership and once again this year, we attended National Young Leaders Day (NYLD). What is the food of the leader? It is conversations. He aha te kai a te rangatira? He kōrero, he kōrero, he kōrero. This was the main message of National Young Leaders Day held in Wellington. Thousands of students were hosted in the stadium and the day's programme included keynote speakers such as Ronnie Taulafo from the TV show ‘What Now’ and Hana Tapiata who is a well-known New Zealand blogger. Our year six leaders heard from these different speakers, accepted challenges, danced to Kings, got autographs, played team building games, and went swimming! The following day we went to Adrenalin Forest which was full of high excitement, stomach churning and was an excellent confidence builder. Our young leaders enjoy a challenge and push past their comfort zones. Well done Zhane, Ruby, Maddie, Te Waiarani, Isobelle, Lucy, Madi, Lorcan, Oliver, Devin, Jack. Thank you to the parents who helped.

June 2019 - 13 Engaged Learners - Literacy comes Alive!

Literacy in the Teina Nest with our year one to three learners always involves building on the interests of our students. They have been engaged in learning about our seasons and writing about Autumn. They learnt to appreciate each leaf and that each one is different - just like we are! Learners read the story Hamilton’s Hats and then unleashed their creativity to make their own.The story encouraged plenty of discussion around our CORE values and it was a great opportunity for our seniors and juniors to work together. Duffy Theatre is always a highlight of our school year and it did not disappoint! We were treated to a theatrical show from the Duffy team. It is always entertaining and always teaches valuable lessons about the power of reading. This year the theme of gaming was explored and was about whanau connections, using reading to help solve problems, and the hidden talents of our elders. Thank you to our Duffy Sponsors Craig Wadsworth & Shannon Austin.

Sporting Success - Rippa Rugby

We recently competed in the Southzone Rippa Rugby Tournament in Hawera with a junior and senior team. Whenuakura School played with energy and for some of our learners it was the first time they have played. we were all very proud of their outstanding effort and achievement. We have also started football lessons provided by the Hawera Football Club and hosted here at school. Learners participate in skills and drills and enjoy playing the game at lunchtimes as well as during lessons.

Environews

Daffodils will soon brighten up the roadside! Thank you to the South Taranaki District Council for donating these and Soni Kennealy and all the parents who helped plant them with our learners.

CORE Values

Our learners can earn points for showcasing our CORE values in and around school. We now have a system where they can choose to spend or save these points to earn rewards. It has been excellent to see so many students aiming to earn as many as possible and some have already saved these for a special morning tea.

Community-Minded - Pink Shirt Day

Pink shirt day is about promoting the message that it is cool to be kind and kindness fits all. We learnt about being an upstander and what we can do if we witness bullying. We know that no matter who you are or what you do, we all have a role to play in ending bullying and spreading just a little more kindness Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora. Speak up, stand together, stop bullying.

Would you like to enrol your child at Whenuakura School?

We encourage you to come and see us if you are looking to enrol your child in school. We are happy to show you around and discuss our learning programmes. Individualised transition dates can be organised.

What’s Been Happening at St Joseph’s Patea...

Noho marae At the end of Term 1 we had a cultural exchange and Noho Marae with Linton Country School. They joined together with us to experience staying at one of our local marae Pariroa. As part of our cultural development we were learning Māori customs / tikanga and putting them into practice in a traditional environment. We enjoyed sharing our Māori culture with Linton Country School. Some of the activities included weaving harakeke, poi making, kōrero about the marae and kōwhaiwhai patterns in the wharenui, mau rākau / taiaha. Duffy Role Models Assembly We were fortunate to receive a visit from Matua Kingi Biddle who spoke to our tamariki and handed out their new Duffy books that had been selected. Duffy Theatre We had a very entertaining morning at Patea Area School for the Duffy Theatre. This year’s theme was “Gaming”. We helped Duffy to solve a problem and many skills were highlighted. Some of us even got to participate. This show was thoroughly enjoyed by all with lots of laughter and squeals of excitement as the game progressed. Flying High Combined Schools Art Day A big congratulations to Mokoia School for organising this fabulous day. There were a variety of activities hosted by teachers, librarians and art educators. It was great to have our local schools coming together to share in this experience. Netball We now have a new netball team, the Carlyle Cats, which is a combination of our school, Whenuakura and Kakaramea. They are enjoying their season so far and have had a few wins. Rugby League Quite a few of our tamariki are also playing Rugby League for the Patea Warriors Teams. They have had a few home and away games and get great support from whānau and the wider community. It is great that Junior Rugby League has had a revival giving our students the opportunity to play sport again. They have a few more games before a trip to Wellington to play in the curtain raiser for the Warriors game. What a fantastic opportunity for our tamariki to be experiencing. Kaupapa We are currently looking at “The Brain”, the different parts of the brain and what are our switch ons and switch offs. This works alongside our Enviroschools kaupapa of Healthy Mind, Healthy Body. We are planning our new herb garden which is going to be constructed out of pallets. We have been looking at what herbs are used in cooking and which ones are good for our brain health. Watch this space for more updates. God bless you all, Saint Joseph’s School - Patea

Maxwell and Districts Kindergarten

Our children at Maxwell Kindergarten love to bake and being involved in the process. With coming to the end of Autumn already and into some cooler days, we are thinking up more ideas to bake together and enjoy the treats we make. Today it was Chocolate chip biscuits! We found a simple and eggless recipe online thanks to Chelsea sugar, made a copy for us to refer to and gathered all the ingredients. We washed our hands and each took a turn measuring and adding an ingredient to the mix, stirring well so those big chocolate chips got spread all through. Rolling the biscuit balls were a little tricky! But we all gave it a go and ended up with some big ones and tiny wee ones…yum. And oh boy, they smelled great when they were baking! We didn’t have to wait long before we enjoyed a warm biscuit straight from the oven after our lunch. Next week we will harvest our garden and use the silver beet and spring onions to make a quiche with the children that we can enjoy for lunch. Our families often kindly donate their extra farm eggs, fresh fruit and veges that we can use in our cooking which we are grateful for, and as we head into Matariki and preparing for our annual whānau feast and get together, lots more soups and delights will be made together for us all to share. Yum, can’t wait…! Arohanui, Michaela, Katherine and Annie
