A Christian Word

A new year with new opportunities! I’ve been writing to show all that there is a Creator God, all this wonderful and beautiful Earth, animals, astounding visual scenes, moon & sun …. Everything is far too well made to have come from nothing! It has a beginning, it has a Creator, a superior intelligent God who has always been. This takes more than our somewhat limited mind can comprehend. It’s like breathing, we cannot see oxygen, but we know it exists, otherwise we wouldn’t! There is so much to marvel throughout God’s mighty hand, creative hand, and it’s all here for us to enjoy. Plants, vegetables that grow in soil, this soil would most likely kill us if were we to eat it but the vege and fruit that stems from it … we eat! We can take it all for granted, every season perfectly timed, but the greatest opportunity that every human has … is to praise the mighty creator God for what He has done just for us, but we don’t! We would rather pursue other explanations that steer us away from God. I guarantee you that all these “new” answers to creation will eventually just die away. Why? Because there is no truth in them, then we invent another one, global warming for example, whatever it takes to cause us to look elsewhere but to the truth, because when God is mentioned sin becomes a reality and we would rather not mention “Him”! The greatest opportunity any human has is a lifetime to draw conclusions about all of this beauty we take for granted and we seem bent on destroying it as well! Ask yourself this, what is the purpose of being birthed and going through 60-90+ years and then just to die, finish! What’s the sense in that? We would be no different from animals. That seems a rather cruel happening, there has to be more, life demands this! Pointless thinking and time wasted chasing mirage, looking for the truth when it is staring us in the face 24/7. C’mon get to grips with this huge question … ask God to help you understand the beauty that is Him, His hand of creation. Because one day, your last day, you had best have the answer to all this. Why? Because my bible tells me that man is destined to die “once” and then the judgement. What will you be judged on? Your conclusions to this amazing opportunity God has given you to discover! This year make it your opportunity to know the truth. As Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father (God) except through me”. Come Lord Jesus

Shootout Day Sunday was shootout day and a poor chip on the 1st hole eliminated Neil Edgcombe. Seven players were involved in the chip off on the 2nd hole and a rare chipping mistake by Cyril Faiers lead to his elimination. An out of bounds shot by Robert Bourke eliminated him on the 3rd hole. On the 4th Hole five players were involved in a putt off and Ray Finlay was eliminated. Jeff Bright was the only player to have a nett 5 on the 5th hole and he was eliminated. All the five players left had nett scores of 6 on the 6th hole and Verna Bourke thinned her chip over the green to be eliminated. Phil Cassidy was the only player with a nett 3 on the 7th hole so he was eliminated. On the 8th hole a putt off was required and Roger Edgecombe was eliminated so on the final hole the two players left were Steve Honeyfield who was the last person to qualify for the shootout and Nick Williams. CONTRACTING LIMITED Māori Party candidate: scrap oil and gas subsidies in wake of Tamarind fiasco

Māori Party candidate for Te Tai Hauāuru and environmental campaigner Debbie NgarewaPacker is calling on the Government to scrap oil and gas subsidies in the wake of news that Tamarind Taranaki may be leaving it to the Government to front up the entirety of the $155 million decommissioning costs for its Tui Oil field. This follows news that Tamarind has gone into voluntary administration and that there has been a small oil spill from the Tui Oil field this month. “Aotearoa has fringe companies like Tamarind operating in our waters and on land because the Government offers the industry subsidies, tax breaks and split decommissioning costs,” said Ms Ngarewa-Packer. “The current review of the Crown Minerals Act offers the Government the opportunity to ensure that oil and gas is recognised as a sunset industry. This must include scrapping incentives and subsidies, including the income tax break and the offer to meet 42% of decommissioning costs. “Concerns about the ability of Tamarind to foot the decommissioning bill were raised during the EPA consent hearings, yet as usual they fell on deaf ears. “New Zealand taxpayers are footing the bill for the recklessness of what is a multi-billiondollar industry, while here in Taranaki we are suffering the environmental consequences of their negligence. “It’s good that last year the Government closed the loophole that meant Tamarind did not have to go through financial checks in the consenting process, but we also need to scrap incentives and put a ban on new onshore exploration. “We have known for years that oil and gas is a sunset industry, and yet the Government’s policy settings still do not properly recognise this reality. “We need to act urgently to protect our whenua and moana, while ensuring Aotearoa takes real action on climate change,” said Ms Ngarewa-Packer.

Taranaki DHB welcomes new board members Newly elected and appointed members to Taranaki District Health Board (DHB) were officially welcomed with a mihi whakatau today at Taranaki Base Hospital followed by their first hui. New members were supported by strong iwi representation from both North and South Taranaki as they were greeted by DHB management, giving everyone an opportunity to meet and mingle. New board chair Cassandra Crowley, who was born in Kaponga, was recently recognised at the Women in Governance Awards and brings to Taranaki DHB her wealth of business, commercial and leadership skills. She recently attended the Ministry of Health’s inaugural meeting and induction of all DHB chairs, including 13 new appointments nationwide. The Ministry’s induction programme aims to ensure DHB boards have the support they need to provide strong governance and leadership. Ms Crowley says she’s delighted to be able to lead such a passionate and talented group of people who all bring their own experience and knowledge to the boardroom table. The DHB welcomes three other ministerial appointments to the Board - Bridget Sullivan (deputy chair), Carla White and Patsy Bodger; two newly elected members - Paul Veric and Mike Davey; and the following re-elected members Pauline Lockett, Kevin Nielson, David Lean, Alison Brown and Harry Duynhoven. Te Pahunga (Marty) Davis remains as the chair of Te Whare Punanga Korero Trust (TWPK), Taranaki’s regional Māori health governance body made up of members from each of Taranaki’s eight iwi. “To have a plethora of skills including local government, Māori health, public health, education and ministerial is both

exciting and beneficial to the Taranaki community. We all play a vital role in improving health outcomes for the people of Taranaki and ensuring there is equitable access to high quality healthcare,” Ms Crowley said. Taranaki DHB chief executive Rosemary Clements is looking forward to the next three years working with the new board. “It’s great to have retained the experience of some former board members mixed with some fresh blood to help us achieve our vision and goals. DHB governance is a very important job, it’s responsible for planning, funding, and in some instances, delivering health and disability services for the district. “Boards also need to reflect the communities they serve, so it’s good to have both male and female, pakeha and Māori representation from all around the region on the board.”

Standing: Te Pahunga (Marty) Davis (Chair for Te Whare Punanga Korero Trust (TWPK), Paul Veric, Alison Brown, Carla White, Mike Davey, Harry Duynhoven, Patsy Bodger, Pauline Lockett, Kevin Nielson Seated: Cassandra Crowley (Chair), Bridget Sullivan (Deputy Chair) and David Lean

Lions Club Christmas Luncheon

President of Waverley Lions, Gordon Kennedy presided over what is possibly his last Christmas luncheon, held at the Waverley Bowling Club on December 11, attended by ninety over sixty-five year olds who came from Waverley, Waitotara and Patea. There is no charge for the luncheon as Waverley Lions pay all costs, apart from liquid refreshments. The Luncheon began with Gordon welcoming everyone, wishing all a Merry and Safe Xmas and thanking all the Lion members, their wives and all the people involved in ensuring the Luncheon is a success. He also asked the attendees to remember those who have passed on over the last year. Gordon then introduced our new Mayor Phil Nixon, who congratulated the Lions for sponsoring and organising the function. The Mayor went on to outline some of the projects planned for the Waverley area including the almost completed Water Transfer System. MC Frankie Stevens began the entertainment by introducing the Waverley School Choir conducted by Dianne Sanson. The excellent choir sang several Xmas carols much to the enjoyment of the crowd, who joined in the singing. Frankie then joined the choir in a beautiful rendition of “When a child is born” The young men from the choir brought the recital to an end with a rousing and well performed Haka, which produced a loud and appreciative response. Frankie Stevens then entertained the crowd with more songs and amusing stories until lunch. Grace was delivered by Denis Smith, followed by a moments silence for the people involved in the devastating disaster at White Island. Lunch was then served, and the fare included roast beef, chicken, new potatoes and a choice of five vegetables. And, of course, the traditional Christmas ham expertly carved by Denis Smith. Dessert included traditional Christmas pudding supplied as always by Te Mahana (Patea) rest home ladies. The food was excellent, and thanks must go out to all the ladies who helped Vickie Zimmerman, who organised the menu and ran the kitchen. Mr Stevens continued entertaining the crowd with some hilarious versions of Billy T James skits and of course more beautiful songs. Frankie is a polished entertainer, has a wonderful voice, and a very friendly involving manner. The crowd loved everything he did and there is no doubt he makes this occasion a hugely pleasurable afternoon. Everyone at the Luncheon had a great time and many of them had an opportunity to meet old friends not seen since last year’s function. Kay Wallace, Lions Zone Governor, thanked Gordon for his 27 years’ service to Waverley Lions and also being the driving force behind these fantastic luncheons.

Clockwise from top left: Gordon Kennedy, Waverley Lions President, welcomes all to the luncheon. Frankie Stevens singing one of his beautiful numbers. Boys from Waverley School boy's excellent haka. Master ham carver, Denis Smith.

Patrons enjoying entertainment with Mayor Phil Nixon. Waverley resident Eric Weir Waverley received a Local Heroes medal recently, as well as being a semi-finalist in the Countdown Senior New Zealander of the Year award for his fundraising work through the Lions Trust in supporting Whanganui Hospice of a considerable amount of money over last few years. Talking to Frankie and Phil Nixon. Frankie Stevens with choir conductor, and schoolteacher, Dianne Sanson.

We had our AGM mid 2019, but with one thing and another I didn’t send the Presidents report to the Patea Waverley Press, so here it is now, a nice bit of summer reading: Patea Historical Society AGM Presidents Report, Thursday 25 July 2019 Ladies and Gentlemen, I have much pleasure in presenting the 51th annual Presidents Report of the Patea Historical Society. As I do every year, I’d like to acknowledge the dedicated members of our Committee. Without us, there would be a whole lot of history that would never see the light of day again. Preserving & Promoting our Past’ is our what we do because it’s so rewarding. Our Patea Historical Society team is: Jim Baker, Bettie Howarth, Roy Hotter, Michael Parsons, Dave Crompton, Harvey Gibbs, Rob Groat, Joe Bourke & myself. And, of course our patron; Howard Anderson. Clive Robinson has retired since our last AGM; we are very grateful for his decades of service. In our 52nd year the current membership of the society stands at 68 paid members including 7 complementaries. Our annual accounts have been audited by Hughson & Associates, our honorary auditor. The Patea Historical Society continues to support Aotea Utanganui, our Museum with two appointed members on the trust, Dave Crompton and Jim Baker. We continue to donate the usual annual operational funding of $3,000 per year. We have been working with the Council to ensure that the Georgian styled Hunter Shaw building built in 1930 in Patea, is earthquake strengthened. The cost of this is around $700,000. Fortunately this amount has been secured. Half of this amount has come from the STDC and the other half from Lotteries Heritage funding. This Category 2 building is an important part of Patea’s landscape. The construction work is due to be finished in September. On 15 September 2018, the Hawera RSA and a committee of dedicated locals unveiled statues of 2 Hawera WWI Soldiers – John Grant and Harry Laurent, who both received Victoria Cross medals 100 years earlier. I was on the committee for this project, it was a Memorial Day when the memorial was opened, and really satisfying to see these men honoured. The last year has been dotted with 150 anniversaries of major Taranaki Land War Battles. We were fortunate that Darren Ngarewa made a visit to each site & videoed it, then wrote an informative article about the battle, which we could share to our Patea Historical facebook page. The article about the Turuturu Mokai battle on 12 July has so far had over 9000 views and 30 shares. On 7 September 2018 it was 150 yrs since Battle of Te Ngutu o te manu, Jim & I attended the dawn service there, 7 Nov was Battle of Moturoa, the post Darren did for that has been shared 43 times and viewed by over 10,000. A post about the Battle of Tauranga Ika on 3 Feb was just as keenly received and the battle of Otautu on 13 March. We now have 2616 people watching our Patea Historical Facebook page – a powerful tool to get our stories out there. On Saturday 3 November we organized a trip to Hukatere Pa site at Whenuakura and Pariroa Pa at Kakaramea. It was hosted by Syd & Anne Kershaw and Wai Cassidy. They taught us all so much that day, and we were able to share our memories of the Pa as we were growing up. We marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Le Quesnoy with a Facebook post about Hurleyville man Pte Sydney Myles, who was killed in the battle on 4 November 1918. Jim was in Le Quesnoy for the commemorations, (his Grandfather was one of the NZ soldiers that liberated the town) and he sent me a photo of Sydney’s grave the day before the centennial & I took a photo of a memorial stone for Sydney at Patea Cemetery and put it on Facebook – so many comments & stories came from that. One year down our Patea Historical Society Website is going very well, we have uploaded a lot of information and articles to it now. It comes up at the top of the list when you type Patea Historical into google. We marked Armistice Day out at Alton with a ‘end of the War Cabaret’ on the night of 10 Nov and the following morning had a lovely service by our War Memorial, with many families returning for their Soldier’s. 14 Alton men were killed in WWI. PHS also had an article in the Patea Waverley Press about the end of the War and the outbreak of the Influenza epidemic, Patea suffered badly during this time 100 years ago. On 30 December 2018 valuable Patea resident Ruth Merrigan died at the age of 96. I would call on her often to ask questions and verify things. Really do miss her and all her knowledge. We opened our Freezing Works Display Building a couple of times over the summer and got loads of interested people coming in to check it out. With Ivan Bruce at the helm on the 14 January 2019, we hosted another Whanganui Summer programme bus load of 40 people, for the 4th year running. We took them to the Watchtower at Manaia Golf Course, Te Ngutu o te manu, Waihi Blockhouse site, Pikituroa Pa site (also known as Mangamanga) and the Waihi cemetery, we ended the day at Turuturumokai, but by then it was torrential rain so Ivan gave a captivating description of the battle and site from inside the bus. On 10 Feb Heritage Groups gathering at the home of Rob Hooper at Lepperton and visited the preserved Pa site of Kairoa, once situated at the end of the Whakaahurangi Trail and Chutes Track. PHS were a part of the first ever South Taranaki Heritage Week 1-7 April. Hawera Genealogy instigated & organised this successful informative week, with the help of the South Taranaki District Council. There were loads of events during this week. We had a table at the family history expo at the Hawera Community Centre on Saturday 6 April and then the week ended with a tour fascinating sites in the Whenuakura area and on Jim’s farm, then to Wai-o-turi marae. In May, Larraine Sole launched another well written book pertaining to Patea history, ‘Racing Days in Old Patea’ about the 3 Racecourses in our town’s past, we helped her with proof reading and sourcing photos. On 10 and 11 May we hosted the NZ History Federation Conference at Tairoa Lodge, Hawera. Rob Green was our guest speaker on Saturday night, and during the day we did a bus tour of significant Heritage sites in the area, with Jim Baker doing the commentary, and Ross Dunlop at Ohawe. We will hopefully have another field trip before the end of the year. Possibly a tunnel tour of inland Taranaki tunnels. Russ Standing is working hard on a huge book about the history of the Patea Freezing Works, we are helping him where possible. It is a book that has been hugely anticipated and we

January 2020 - 13 know Russ will do a spectacular job of it. Another major project we have been a part of is the publication of Ian Church’s last book; ‘Salutary Punishment’ the sad story of the Pakakohi & Parihaka Maori Prisoner’s, sent to Otago. This was a two-year project that wouldn’t have happened with such ease for us, if it hadn’t been for Kelvin Day. The boxes of 500 books arrived in June, and Ian’s sister Pat Greer was so grateful and relieved that we completed Ian’s final wish. Books are selling well, and we will be doing a reprint soon. Its 150 years this November since the 74 Pakakohi men were sent from Patea to Dunedin. We have also started on the reprint of Ian’s book ‘Heartland of Aotea’, with Kelvin again editing it and guiding us through the process. Ian sent Kelvin a lot more content for this book before he died in 2013, this has all been added to the original text and many more images will be sourced. Once again we have had a busy year. We start off the year wondering what’s going to happen, and by the end of it, are as usual amazed at what we’ve done! We really appreciate all of you PHS members supporting us by paying your subs, finding us old photos and info, and turning up when we have events, you are all a valuable part of this Society, so thank you for your input. Brake welcomes new road safety strategy and roadside drug testing

Collaboration: Kowtow, GovettBrewster Art Gallery, Ruth Buchanan

Road safety charity Brake is welcoming the Government’s new road safety strategy, saying it contains some key actions to help reduce deaths and injuries on our roads. The final version of the strategy, along with 15 actions that will be implemented over the next three years, was released today. Brake is particularly welcoming the Vision Zero, ‘Safe System’, approach taken in the strategy, following international best practice for reducing road trauma. A Vision Zero approach says that human life and health cannot be exchanged for any other benefit within society, meaning that safety must be the top priority in our transport system. Caroline Perry, Brake’s New Zealand director said: “As an organisation that works with bereaved and injured families we see the devastating consequences of crashes. We’re pleased to see this strategy takes a Vision Zero approach and includes specific, measurable targets for reducing trauma on our roads. Whilst there is a lot of work to do to improve the safety of our roads over the next decade and beyond, the initial 3-year action plan contains some key pieces of work to help save lives and reduce injuries.” The charity is pleased to see increased investment in road safety upgrades and roads policing in the plans, including additional median barriers, intersection upgrades and other safety treatments, as well as new enforcement technologies. It also welcomes actions around unsafe speeds, improving the safety of footpaths and cycleways, and improving the standards of vehicles entering the fleet among other measures. Brake also says that including work-related road safety as one of the focus areas of the strategy is an important step in recognising and addressing the risks that at-work drivers can face, and take, when out on the road. “People driving for work tend to drive more frequently, for longer, and further than the average driver, and it’s important that measures are implemented to reduce road risk for these drivers, so we’re pleased to see this being recognised in the new strategy,” Ms Perry added. Brake’s Global Fleet Champions initiative works to share best practice in fleet safety with organisations that have staff driving for work. Brake runs events and produces resources to help organisations reduce their road risk. Global Fleet Champions is free to join, find out more at www.globalfleetchampions.org. Brake is also welcoming the announcement that roadside drug testing will be implemented, with Police able to conduct random saliva testing for some illegal drugs and impairing medication. In 2018, 95 people were killed in crashes where a driver had drugs in their system. Ms Perry says: “Drugged driving causes horrific harm on our roads, resulting in high numbers of deaths and injuries every year. Roadside testing has been proven in other countries to help take drugged drivers off the road, and to deter people from driving under the influence of drugs, so we’re delighted to see these plans for implementation.”

Ethical fashion label Kowtow and Aotearoa New Zealand’s contemporary art museum, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, are launching a limited edition collection in collaboration with artist Ruth Buchanan. The collaboration ties in with a major new exhibition developed by Buchanan to mark the Gallery’s 50th anniversary launching on Saturday 7 December. Titled ‘The scene in which I find myself / Or, where does my body belong’, the exhibition is a critical interrogation into the Gallery’s collection history, focusing on the cultural imbalances and ultimately the role and success of the museum. Kowtow has worked with Buchanan to produce a lightweight scarf, hand-loomed from 100% fairtrade certified organic cotton, titled ‘A wavy line is drawn across the middle of the original plans’. Two T-shirts, made from 100% fairtrade certified organic cotton, are adorned with the two parts of the exhibition title, ‘The scene in which I find myself ’ and ‘Where does my body belong’. Berlin-based, New Zealand-born Ruth Buchanan is the 2018 recipient of New Zealand’s most prestigious art award, The Walters Prize. Her art frequently considers how art, language, gender and identity intersect. Buchanan says the scarf, which is sized to adapt to many uses, ties in with the exhibition in regards to relationships and the body. “My kaupapa for this exhibition is coming from a feminist space. The title is a statement of empowerment – thinking that we can choose the terms on how we reflect ourselves, question ourselves or produce ourselves. Like many things in our lives, the woven textile is an unstable document and can be used and claimed in multiple ways, to wrap around your body, your baby, hang on the wall, use as a tablecloth. It’s part of the thinking of the show to reimagine the formation of relating and relationship building.” Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Co-Director Aileen Burns: “We’re excited by the opportunity to be working with and supporting such a high-end, sustainable New Zealand based label. Kowtow was the natural choice when deciding to create a limited edition wearable accompaniment to our exhibition.” Kowtow Founder & Creative Director Gosia Piatek: "As an art driven label, we've spent many hours at galleries across the world. We're always looking at the work of artists for inspiration in our own collections. When the opportunity to work with award winning textile artist, Ruth Buchanan arose, we were thrilled. Melding Ruth's colours, shapes & statements with our own fairtrade certified organic cotton has been a dream project." This product launch also coincides with the release of a Kowtow uniform jacket to be worn as uniform by Gallery staff. The limited edition scarf and T-shirts will be sold exclusively at the Govett-Brewster Shop and online over the course of the exhibition. All sales from this merchandise help support art and exhibition making at this contemporary art museum.

Local Māori wards decision highlights need for independent Māori voice The Government’s failure to act on ending the discriminatory local and regional government Māori wards provision is unacceptable and highlights the need for independent Māori voices in Parliament, Māori Party candidate Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said today. Currently, the establishment of Māori wards in local government can be put to a referendum, whereas general wards can’t be – they are decided by councils alone. Last year five councils had proposals for Māori wards put to referendums and voted down. “In 2019 its completely unacceptable that any government would choose to not act on removing racist provisions in law,” said Te Tai Hauāuru candidate Ms Ngarewa-Packer. “There is broad support in local government to tackle what the United Nations have called “persistently low” levels of Māori representation - Local Government New Zealand has called the provision ‘anomalous’ and ‘discriminatory’. “As a former Deputy Mayor of South Taranaki District Council, I understand how important it is to have Māori at the council table but also how difficult is to get elected. “Parliament has had many opportunities to act but has failed to do so. They voted down Marama Davidson’s bill last term, ignored Andrew Judd’s petition, and have now said they will not do anything this term. “This is a simple change to ensure the process for establishing Māori and general wards is the same. To not act is turning a blind eye to racism. “The failure of the Government to remove this provision from law proves why we need independent kaupapa Māori voices in Parliament. “In her comments, Nanaia Mahuta made it clear that Labour are unwilling to even seek NZ First’s support for changing the law, which suggests that Labour’s Māori MPs are failing to challenge their colleagues on kaupapa Māori. “We need representatives who will fight for kaupapa Māori solutions, every moment of every day. If elected next year, that’s exactly what I will do,” said Ms Ngarewa-Packer.

Trial for South Taranaki Businesses to Compost Organic Waste The South Taranaki District Council (STDC) is on a mission to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and consequently is supporting a trial for businesses to compost their organic waste, using funding from the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) Waste Disposal Levy (https://www.mfe. govt.nz/waste/waste-guidance-and-technical-information/ waste-disposal-levy ). STDC environment and sustainability manager, Rebecca Martin, says that currently, approximately 30% of the District’s waste to landfill is actually organic or food waste that should be composted. “An easy way to reduce this is to encourage people to compost their food and organic waste. Most residents can easily compost at home (https://www.southtaranaki.com/ our-services/rubbish-and-recycling/home-composting ), but for many businesses this is not an easy option,” says Rebecca. “To address this problem, STDC have recently partnered with a commercial composting company called EasyEarth, who are based in Whanganui. EasyEarth will be starting a trial to see how many businesses are willing to sign up to a weekly commercial composting collection on the collection route from Whanganui to Hawera. The trial will initially run to June 2020. However, if EasyEarth can successfully sign up enough businesses to make their collection run viable for the long-term, we hope they will be able to expand to the entire district in late 2020 – so the more business that get on board to support this initiative, the more likely it will be to continue!” “EasyEarth will do weekly runs to collect organic waste/ compost bins from businesses that they sign up, and then replace the bin they collect with a clean one. This involves a bin getting dropped at each facility for organic waste/food waste/compostable waste, and picked up on a weekly basis,” says Rebecca. Several STDC facilities have already signed up for the trial, including the LibraryPlus centres in Hawera, Waverley and Patea, the district museum in Patea, the TSB Hub and Council’s main administrative building in Hāwera. Business owners in Hāwera, Patea, Waverley and Waitotara can find more information, check out the options for their premises, and sign up with EasyEarth here: https://www. easyearth.co.nz/our-services/work

Summer Blast at Patea & Waverley LibraryPlus South Taranaki Libraries popular summer reading programme has been revamped this year to offer a new, dynamic way of encouraging children’s’ learning and discovery while not being limited to just reading. Over the six-week summer holidays, the Summer Blast programme offers children the opportunity to choose from a fun set of challenges and activities that appeal to them and then go in the draw for some fabulous prizes. The programme covers a multitude of literacies, including visual and digital literacy not just reading and writing. Traditionally, libraries were places where you could go to find knowledge. Today libraries are places where you can find, create and use knowledge. The Summer Blast programme empowers our children to find, use and create knowledge, and use that knowledge in a meaningful way. Children in Patea and Waverley are enjoying the new programme, and are proudly bringing in their creations to show staff. More photos on page 13
