A Christian Word

Waiting is a very hard thing to do, sitting in the A&E, you wait … and wait… It is difficult to wait sometimes; if it’s for a bus or plane etc, you know full well the eventually it will arrive. As a Christian, we are all waiting, we wait for the promise of Jesus return, to come and walk upon this earth that He created. The Bible has shown us in many places to wait for His return. In Matthew v14 v 36-51 it shows us that nobody knows the date/time that Jesus will be coming back here, only Mighty God himself knows. But we are told to endure, to be faithful, vigilant, ready! His return will be swift. It tells us in these chapters that people will be behaving as in the days of Noah, before the earth was flooded, partying, doing what they want rather than what God has told us plainly to do. When Jesus comes back, it will be for those who do His will, obeying His commands, which are easy to do, those who are vigilant and waiting for Him. The promise has been in the hearts of every believer for centuries. Many Christians have waited and grown old and died, not to perish, but to have eternal life in Jesus. Those who are still alive, we too have this hope within us and as we see the state of the world now, and I’m not talking about smoke screens like global warming! But as laws are passed to kill unborn children because they deem them not to be human? Marriage from God’s perspective is purely male/female, but the Government deems that obsolete! Some Doctors are being allowed to terminate lives, particularly old people’s, and even those who are deemed to be mentally ill etc. These are indicators to Christians that the time is quickly running out. We cannot possibly keep changing what God has made right and make it wrong! Government does not have that right! Regardless of “modern” thinking. We wait patiently - soon, very soon, our Lord Jesus is coming back! This is our hope, our joy and our salvation, every eye will see Him! It can be yours as well, if you want it to be; the waiting will be an expectation of joy and peace that will be yours and what a day it is going to be! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Patea Waverley Garden Club Hello all gardeners! Happy New Year to you all – has not it been a funny old summer so far. Prior to Christmas, many of us met and travelled to Lou and Sharon De Melo’s property inland from Waverley for our annual Christmas get together and Pot Luck tea. Once troops were assembled, we drove up through the Kohi hills out to Okahuturia taking in the beautiful scenery on the way – the closer we got to Lou and Sharon’s, the more dense the surrounding bush became – it was a glorious sight. On arrival, Lou and Sharon greeted us and welcomed us into their home. Once settled, members swapped gifts and then we sampled the delicious food each had provided. A certain woman who works in the Waverley Chemist shop once again did not fail to disappoint with her delectable delight – this time a wonderful dessert. Lovely savoury food and fresh strawberries along with a variety of desserts were enjoyed by those present. Once we all had full tummies, Sharon decided it was time for us to have a look at what she and Lou have created outside. We were all very impressed with what they have managed to establish at this fairly remote location. Sharon knew all of the names of the plants she had planted and advised what suited certain conditions and Lou was praised many times for his beautifully manicured lawns! We all left to travel back home just on sun set and the view travelling back down the hills onto the main road was really lovely. As we passed Nell and Bill’s home, we gave a thought to Nell who has had a bumpy period health wise lately – we wish her well for a speedy recovery. Our next meeting will be Wednesday 12th February 2020 in Waverley. We intend meeting at 6pm in the Main Street of Waverley outside the GAS Service Station from where we will follow the leader to visit two gardens, having supper at the last. Ladies and Gentlemen should bring $2 each and a plate of finger food for supper. If you have any questions prior to the date or would like a ride to our next visit, do not be afraid to call: Waverley: Margaret Prince 06 346 6008 or Cheryl Rook on 06 346 7070 and Patea: Susan Gunn on 06 273 8135 or Karen Phillips on 06 273 8397.

Pātea Community Board Meeting Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 29 January 2020, 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The first meeting for the year was held at the Waverley Community Centre. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Jo & Maria, Robert Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Brian Rook (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera, (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Marianne Archibald (Group Manager Corporate Services), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services), Sara Dymond (PA) & 18 members of the public. Open Forum: Jacq welcomed new Council Staff Marianne & Liam, and Sgt Andrew Stilton to the meeting. Rob spoke to us about the ongoing problem of cell phone coverage in Pātea. This has been highlighted on FB last week with requests for identifying areas of town where there is no coverage. The outcome is that almost all of Pātea has no coverage. In spite of this the telecommunication company incharge of cellphone towers, will not be bringing one to Pātea in the near future. This is a major problem at the Beach in particular if there is an emergency. The Council will continue to push for better service for the town. Rob also gave an update on the Pātea River Walkway. The Council have put it on the list to be upgraded and enlarged, and will continue on to the other side of the bridge, along the River side and then turn up toward Victoria St and then turn again toward the Domain, then down to the Beach. It is still in the planning process, and when done it will provide a valuable biking and walking track for locals and visitors. Jacq spoke about the noughts & crosses game for children that Colin Schrader from Pātea Lions has made for the Memorial Park behind the Waka. This will be installed in the next few weeks. Mention was also made of the need to install a sign at the carpark at Mana Bay to warn of the strong currents the river creates for swimmers. The Council are working on this. Repairs have also been made to the life preserver rings and the phone at the Beach. This is in relation to the children that were washed out to sea a couple of weeks ago. The Council also want to recognize in some way the bravery of the man that saved them. Glenda Haworth spoke of the placement of the ‘Dog exercising areas’ at Waiinu Beach. They are too close to the Campground and the boat ramp. She has asked for them to be relocated several times and is frustrated that this has not been done. Liam said he will follow through on this request. Allan Caple from Pātea Community Patrol gave us an update on the current status of the town after dark. One concern is people on motorbikes riding fast around the town and beach area. This is also a problem in Waverley. The ladies from the Paepae committee gave us an update on the big day ahead on Waitangi Day in Pātea. Gillian Rio, Mareta Marsters, Minnie Broughton, Kimba Mellows, Tina Fisher told us they were all set for another action-packed day. Their Chairperson Melva Tucker couldn’t be there today, but we thanked them all for the tireless work they do to make this event such a success each year. This is the 16th or 17th year the Paepae has been going, long may it continue. Maria Ferris spoke about the new sunshades that will be going in Aotea Park at Waverley. She will be meeting with Phil Waite about this soon. She also requested that ‘Pool Open’ sign be put by the Waverley Pools, as its difficult to tell if it is open from the roadside. Sue and Bruce Weeks spoke of their concern at the speed of traffic passing through the town, particularly trucks. Mayor Phil said it is a major concern, especially in Waverley and Eltham for some reason. Other locals agreed and it was asked if a Speed Camera car cold be set up in the town from time to time. Sgt Andrew said he will pass this concern on to the Area Commander. Sally Newlands spoke of her despair at the state of some of the town gardens at Waverley, she has over the years, tended a lot of the gardens herself, but wants the Council to do more to keep them presentable. This stirred up a lot of discussion with those in attendance and they all supported Sally’s request. Mayor Phil, Marianne and Liam said it is a concern of the Council and they are working on a plan to sort this out in the urban upgrade. Lyn Cromarty spoke of her annoyance that a paved area at Cave Beach was covered with a load of gravel a while ago. This gravel/large stones in also spilled all the way down some steps, making them dangerous to walk on. Marianne is going to see that the Council remove this gravel. Mayor Phil spoke of the success of the Summer Blast Reading Programme for children and Libraries all over South Taranaki. This has now finished for the summer with a party for the children at each library followed by a water fight outside in the sunshine. Jacq spoke on behalf of the Pātea RSA in regards to their application for $1,100 to print a book for 100 years of Pātea RSA. This milestone was reached in 2019, but the celebration will be held in early 2021. President Tom Matiaha and the rest of the committee are organizing the event which will do our past soldiers proud. Waverley Waitotara RSA have an event to celebrate 100 years since they formed on Saturday 15 February 2020 at the Waverley Community Centre. Jo Peacock and Rob spoke again of the need for more low-cost housing in Waverley and Pātea, especially for older residents. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Council’ then go to ‘Meetings’. Whanganui Summer Programme 2020

On Thursday 9 January Patea Historical Society hosted the annual Whanganui Summer program for the fourth year running, on a field trip to historical sites in the south of our province. We started the day in Patea, with a wander around the exhibits at Aotea Utanganui and then morning tea. The 54 Whanganui residents then got back in the bus and headed out to Oika, on the hilltop beyond Whenuakura Marae. Oika was built as a gunfighting Pa on the top of the hill around the year 1868, at the height of the Land Wars, in its commanding position to protect Rangikura and Pamatangi Pa, by local Chief - Ruka Anauru Te Onekura. Darren Ngarewa was our guide at this site, he explained the zigzag trench design of the Oika hilltop fortified Pa and the role it played. Within months of its creation, the reason for its existence ceased, with the end of the land wars and Ruka Te Onekura being sent to Dunedin as a prisoner of the Crown with 73 others in November 1869. The ancient ridge-top Pa of Pamatangi could be seen in the distance, on the inland side of the main road, above the bend in the Whenuakura River. The next stop was at Weraroa Redoubt at Waitotara, which was established near the site of Weraroa Pā after the Pā was taken on 21 July 1865. Ditch and bank earthwork of a rectangular plan, with bastion defence at three corners covering four sides. Timber construction fortified Block house would have been inside the trench lines. A track from the north side leads down to the Waitotara River; a commemorative cairn for the militia was placed on the site in 1948. Whanganui historian Kyle Dalton told us about the cliff-top Weraroa Pa and nearby kainga Perekama and Arei-ahi. We managed to get the 55-seater bus safely in and out of this remote inland location, thanks to the skillful driving of Nick Huia. The final stop for the day was Tauranga ika Marae on the Nukumaru Straight. We met with Julian Broughton at Tutahi Church and all sat in the ancient pews and listened to him tell of stories of the area. Tutahi is one of 3 churches built by Ngawaka Taurua after his return from Otago with other Maori Prisoners in 1872. 'Tutahi', which stands near the site of Titokowaru's Tauranga Ika Pa on the Nukumaru Straight was built in 1883. 'Te Takerei-o-Aotea' was built in 1888 at Taumaha Pa, Manutahi, while 'Te Kapenga', at Hukatere, was completed in 1889, the year after Taurua's death. The fortified pa of Titokowaru and his followers known as Tauranga-ika was to be the site of a battle, but the battle was abandoned on 3 February 1869. There have been many reasons over the years given for the abandonment of this battle, Words from Ngawaka Taurua and reported in the NZ Herald on 25 June 1869 are probably the most reliable explanation: “from Tauroa a good deal of information was gleaned. He said that the reason for the evacuation of the Turanga ika Pa was because Titokowaru was afraid that he would be surrounded, and that they were short of provisions. He also stated that they had lost more from sickness than from wounds during the war”.

Julian Broughton shows us drone footage of local ancient Pa sites, inside the wharenui at Tauranga ika Marae

In the early 1900’s the historian James Cowan described Tauranga Ika: "This pa, the bestdesigned fortification yet built by the hostile tribes in the country between Wanganui and Taranaki, Tauranga-ika was of large size, defended with trenches and rifle-pits, parapet, and a double line of stockade. Its design was skilful, as will be seen from the plan, and it was so built as to give the defenders an enfilading fire along each flank. It measured about 450 feet each way. The large posts of the palisade were from 6 to 12 inches in thickness and stood 10 to 15 feet above the ground, and the spaces between them were filled in with saplings set upright close together and fastened to cross-rails with supple jack and aka-vines ties. As was usual in Maori stockades, the saplings of the outer fence did not quite reach the ground; only the posts of this line were sunk in the earth, and the defenders in the trench were enabled to fire under the foot of the fence. In the rear of the inner or main stockade there was a parapet 6 feet high and 4 feet in thickness formed by the earth thrown out of the trench. The interior work was pitted with trenches and covered ways and shell-proof underground shelters roofed with strong timbers and toetoe and raupo covered with earth; even galvanised iron taken from the plundered settlers buildings were used as roofing. At one of the flanking angles was a conspicuous watch-tower (taumaihi) over 30 feet high, constructed of stout timbers. In front, outside the palisading, stood a flagstaff on which the Hauhau war-flags were hoisted. Two gateways to the rear stockade gave access to the bush and the water-spring. Titokowaru occupied a tent near the rear of the pa."

8 - February 2020

A word from our MP Harete Hipango

As soon as we have welcomed another new year, the first month is already seen, been and transpired. And with it, the realisation that we are well on our way with 2020. Last week it was announced that Election Day will be on Saturday 19 September, within 11 months of our local government elections. Representation of our community at local and central government ought to reflect the composition and needs of our community – and with that – a person who can properly represent and be made of diversity and experience of social, cultural, ethnic and economic scope and range. I am that person – diverse, experienced, educated, learned in the pathways, walks and aspects of life. Of Whanganui and for Whanganui. Front of mind this summer, has been the people and communities affected by local and foreign tragedies. White/Whakaari Island eruption was a devastating end to 2019. I am immensely indebted to and proud of our first responders, SAS recovery team, defence force, emergency crews, hospital staff, iwi and volunteers. Across the waters, Australia is suffering unimaginable and immeasurable destruction. The horror of the burning bushfires scouring and consuming the earth, the wildlife and the lives of many. And there is now the Coronavirus emerging in China, Australia, the USA and the EU, which is causing concern for many Kiwis, particularly those travelling or stuck abroad and schools who will soon welcome an influx of international students. The Government must address the issue and put in measures to ensure the safety of New Zealanders. Closer to home, was the recent drowning of a young Israeli tourist in the Whanganui River. I posted on my Facebook page an explanation of the reason for the placement of a “rahui” on the River waters and surrounding regions, reaching from Hipango Park (lands gifted by my great grandfather, Whanganui chief Waata Hipango, to the citizens of Whanganui) through to the mouth of the Whanganui Harbour. When there is loss and tragedy of others, particularly visitors, we come together in support and kindness –which is as we ought to do. This must be the same for one another in our own communities. We have people and organisations on the ground, like the Koha Shed and Kai Kitchen Trust, who support the vulnerable members of our community. National wants to support local programmes with Place Based Initiatives (PBIs). We want to give local leaders flexibility and support to customise responses based on what works for the community. Local solutions for local problems. We know there is more crime and more victims under this soft-on-crime Government. We know 15,000 more kids are growing up in benefit dependent homes, despite the Prime Minister promising to halve child poverty, and we know 7000 more young people are on the dole. When the Government scaled back its flagship youth employment programme, it showed it isn’t serious about tackling the root cause of poverty. The cost of living has been driven up by rents and fuel – a by-product of this Government’s policies and taxes. These increased costs are putting real pressure on Kiwi families. In the last financial year alone, $480 million was paid out in hardship grants. Promises have been made locally which haven’t been delivered – during the 2017 election campaign, Labour promised $3 million for Whanganui’s North and South Moles and $6 million for the Whanganui Velodrome. Irrespective of any council owned assets and PGF funds, the Prime Minister and Government made promises that they have not honoured. I promote and welcome investment into the Whanganui electorate – people, communities, infrastructure and opportunities – but we want those promises delivered on, in time, without falsehoods and false hopes. While the current Government focuses on being “relentlessly positive,” The National Party and I, will be relentlessly dedicated to working for New Zealand and our communities. Harete Hipango MP for Whanganui Electorate

Reduce the Fire Risk: on the land using machinery and equipment

Driver attitudes to drink driving research: Brake reaction

Staying safe Whether you’re maintaining your lifestyle block or working on a farm, you’re likely to be carrying out tasks that could start a fire. Fires can start from the smallest spark, so take care using machinery and equipment when conditions are hot and dry. Using machinery When you’re driving through stubble or long grass, exhaust heat or sparks can cause a fire. Mowers and scrub cutters can start fires by hitting rocks in dry grass. Try to avoid using machinery in hot, dry and/or windy weather and keep an eye on what’s happening outside the cab. If it’s unavoidable, wet down your work area and have firefighting equipment on hand. Maintaining machinery Check that your machinery has no mechanical defects that could start a fire – especially in its bearings or moving parts. Make sure it has the approved exhaust systems and spark arresters. Clean belly pans and the spaces around motors regularly. Check for any starling birds’ nests around motors and clear them away before starting any work. Doing hot works Hot work is any task using tools that could start a fire. If welding, brazing, cutting or any other flame/heat operated equipment is part of your operations, know the risks and how to manage them before undertaking any task. • If you’re doing hot work outside you must comply with NZS4781 - New Zealand Code of Practice for Safety in Welding and Cutting. • Remove fire hazards or anything burnable before starting work. • Have firefighting equipment ready. • Half an hour after you finish, check for ignitions that could cause a fire.

Road safety charity Brake says the results of research released by DB Breweries into the attitudes of drivers towards alcohol and driving are extremely concerning. Caroline Perry, NZ director, Brake the road safety charity says: “Getting behind the wheel after drinking is extremely risky, so this research around people's attitudes is very concerning. Research shows that even a small amount of alcohol impairs your driving, affecting your coordination and slowing your reactions. Even if you feel okay after a drink, the reality is that if you get behind the wheel you're putting yourself and others in needless danger. The only safe amount of alcohol to consume if you're driving is none. “We need to ensure Police are resourced to operate more checkpoints and random roadside testing. This not only helps to get drink-drivers off the road, but can also deter people from drink driving, as they perceive there is a high chance they will be caught.” Drivers with even 20-50mg alcohol per 100ml of blood are at least three times more likely to die in a crash than those with no alcohol in their blood [1]. This is because even small amounts of alcohol affect drivers' reaction times, judgment and co-ordination [2]. Alcohol also makes it impossible for drivers to assess their own impairment because it creates a false sense of confidence and means drivers are more inclined to take risks and believe they are in control when they’re not [3]. Brake’s key messages on drink driving: • Never drink any amount of alcohol if you’re driving • Avoid drinking at night if you’re driving early the next morning • Plan ahead and make sure you can get home safely by using public transport, booking a taxi/rideshare, or having a sober driver who sticks to soft drinks. Don’t accept a lift from someone who’s been drinking. • Take responsibility for others: never buy a drink for someone who is driving, speak out to friends who plan to drink and drive, and if you’re hosting a party help your guests to plan a safe way home before the party starts.

Check your fire weather You can see the fire danger in your area on the NIWA fire weather website. It allows you to find out your local fire risk based on your location. If you want to light a fire, it’s not enough just to check the fire weather. You may also have to apply for a fire permit.

Brake is a national road safety charity that promotes road safety and campaigns against the carnage on New Zealand roads. It does this by running a number of initiatives including a service for fleet and road safety professionals. Brake coordinates national Road Safety Week each May. It is also fundraising to improve support for families bereaved and injured in road crashes.

Top fire safety tips • Keep your machinery clean and well maintained. • Have firefighting equipment on hand – and know how to use it. • Avoid using machinery or doing hot works when the fire risk is very high.

Hot weather has also meant that it is nice to slow down and enjoy a story. The library bus has been on its first visit for the year and we were lucky to have the library staff read us a story and share some finger puppets with us. The children loved trying on the animal finger puppets and singing a song about them.
