York Street Patea Riverside Park

Whenuakura's Predator Free Traps

The riverside at York Street in Patea has been given a new lease of life and will now be an area that can be enjoyed and admired. The area is owned by the South Taranaki District Council and is a project that was spearheaded by the Patea Community Board over two years ago. STDC agreed that it was an area that had been neglected for many years and soon got behind our concept for a recreation area specifically for the Waka Ama group to launch their waka and enjoy the awa. The area was blessed by Ngapari Nui and Tama Pokai before work began a few months ago. Noel McColl was in charge of clearing and contouring the 4000 sq metre area, a job that he did with his usual precision and understanding of the landscape. Over the last 40 years it has been used as an area to dump road scrapings and other organic waste, until the level of the land had risen so much that the river could not be seen from the road any more. Chas Reader has lived on York Street for 50 years and could see the river from his front gate when he first moved into his home in 1970. But in the intervening years that view has gone and he just had a view of kikuyu grass that grew over the large mountain of dirt etc. The area was used by Wallis Bourne and then Dick Sybrandy as a depot for gravel etc. Looking through old photos it doesn’t look like any buildings were ever built on this site. H J Peacocke Construction buildings were next door to this area in the 1930s – 1950s, so would have used it for a drop off area for building supplies too. When Noel had finished the earthworks there were still thousands of stones, bricks, bits of plastic and steel on the site, so we had a working bee on Saturday 25 October. This was advertised on the Patea Community facebook page and it was so good to have about 40 locals turn up to do the job and clear the site in record time. Of course if we kept digging we would find a mountain more rocks etc!! We did find some false teeth, a National Party billboard and a what we at first though was a grenade, but on closer inspection turned out to be the knob off an old cast iron bedstead…luckily! Colin Schrader from The Patea Lions Club was asked if he could make a picnic table with bench seats on each side, as well as a large macrocarpa seat (timber supplied by Mike Cole). Colin did an amazing job of this outdoor furniture and installed them a couple of weeks ago. They are so heavy that he required his brother Mike Schrader to lift them into place with his tractor. Alan Johnston and John Hughes helped with the installation as well. Concrete pads were laid under them by Steve Watson of Manutahi Concrete Products. This will make it much easier for the Council lawnmower to manoeuvre around them. The timber for the seats was funded from the Patea Community Board discretionary fund. The grass seed was sown and then we had a week of rain, which was amazing and already there is a haze of new grass over the area. The council will now have this area on their maintenance programme and it will be kept mowed. A timber fence has been put up on the boundary of neighbour Terry’s property toward the Bridge. The other end of the area boarders the big old concrete building that housed the generator to supplement electricity to the town in the early days. The Waka Ama group leaders have kept a close eye on the whole job and have given advice on what is required to make the area more user friendly for their sport. And our Community Development Officer Janine Maruera will continue to work with them to ensure they have what they need for the Waka Ama boats to get out on the awa. It’s been a great project and has been made possible by all the clever and enthusiastic people in our community that helped make it happen. Thanks to you all. Jacq Dwyer, on behalf of the Patea Community Board

Whenuakura School students along with parents and community members, were busy in their weekly Community Connect class making predator free traps. The school has now become one of many Enviroschools around the region and the students have been learning how to protect the native fauna of South Taranaki by learning what predators we have in the area, how we can eradicate them and what we need to do to help our native fauna and flora to thrive. “Environmental action based programmes empower our young people here at Whenuakura School to create and lead change in their community and we are so proud of their work” says Principal Catherine Haerewa. “We are amazed how motived and engaged all students within the school are to make a change in our environment, they have been learning core skills through STEM aspects of our enviroschools like science, technology, engineering and mathematics” said Soni Kenealy. If you would like to purchase a predator trap to assist the community towards being predator free or you would like to join us in our enviroschools journey, please email: admin@ whenuakura.school.nz or 06 273 8029.

We would like to wish all our readers, near and far, a Merry Christmas & happy and prosperous 2021. Cath & Tony

Obedience! This is quite a curly one! Let’s face it, none of us really likes to be told what to do, especially as an adult … children as well. In the military every recruit has to swiftly learn obedience, it will save their lives. They would also agree that you need to have been a person under authority before you can give orders to others, earn your stripes so to speak. When Jesus was born into this world, He had to leave His superior position of God and become a man, an obedient man … even unto death! He who was capable of giving orders had to himself become as a slave and obey them. Paul speaks about this obedience in Philippians, in his absence he is conveying to this church in Philippi the need to continue on in obedience – doing what we are told, not thinking of rights but of responsibility, not about status, but service, not seeking to be ministered to, but to minister, that is being obedient. It takes the courage of a person to step back and ask themselves, “how can I help you?” not "what’s in it for me?". It is somewhat easier for a person to be obedient, who has put their ego or self back from centre stage and desire to serve than to boss others around. It is really difficult, perhaps even seen as a meekness, is strength under control. Jesus was obedient, God has said in His word that He requires obedience not sacrifice. Now there is another very essential part of who we are; our thoughts, they can build us up or they can tear us down. We don’t really need other people’s input to make these a reality (but I have to say, they can be a huge influence … if we let them) but we wrestle with our thoughts a lot. The more we fight them the stronger they become, to the point where we are a slave to our own thoughts and imaginations. There is an answer that the outcome is victorious, again Peter mentions this in the church in Corinth; “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete”. Once we realise that what God sees in us is exactly who He created us to be, before sin crashed into our lives and distorted the truth so much that we begin to believe the lies our corrupt mind tells us – contrary to God’s truth, so here’s the point of obedience, once we believe God sent His Son Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, died on a cross aged 33 for your sins … why? Pure obedience. He could of refused, but He chose the right option, not His safety/life, but obedience to you and me to have life … eternal. Once we understand that God loves us and desires for us to live a beautiful life, both here and for eternity, when we see our worth from His word, then obedience becomes not only natural but more important a safety net to keep us aware that God is in control and what He asks of us is 100% for our good pleasure and will. You will obey God’s will from a free heart, not from some guilt trip, perhaps even trying to please Him! Trust and obey for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus … trust and obey! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Many will remember him as the coordinator of S.T.O.P. (South Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits) program, that was run from the house and complex opposite the Masonic Hotel, back in the late ‘80s-90s. Outdoor life was one of his passions alongside his, buses, dogs, motors and, of course, his family. Hardcase, straight-up, don’t muck-around-attitude was his way. Many a story was shared with whanau, military whanau and friends on the day of his burial. Bill is remembered with love by his children, Wiremu, Fiona and boys, Kui and Dustin, and extended family. Heartland of Aotea, by Ian Church

The reprint of Heartland of Aotea has arrived with us at Patea Historical Society. It was written by the late Ian Church, a historian and teacher at Patea High School in the 1970-80s. Ian Church printed it originally in 1991 as a manuscript. Before he died in 2013 he added more content and images to this valuable book and entrusted it with Kelvin Day to edit, and us to get it to print. The result is a brilliant and detailed book that anyone who wants to know more about our local earliest Māori & European contact will enjoy reading. Copies can be bought for $50 from our Museum - Aotea Utanganui in Patea, or contact me, Jacq Dwyer, 027 241 5595, we can post to anywhere in the world. This hard cover, 400 glossypaged book would make a great Christmas present for that person who wants to know and understand more about our fascinating past.

Hello All Gardeners!

Pātea Community Board Meeting

On Thursday 5th November 47 excited garden lovers hopped aboard a bus for the Patea Waverley Garden Club 2020 Garden Festival Mystery Bus Tour. The day promised inclement weather but we all came prepared! Those who met the bus in Wanganui then joined eager others waiting in Waverley. We then made our way up to Patea, picked up the Patea troupe, and made our way to the first garden we were planning to visit. Our first stop was at Quince Lodge in Patea. This is one of Patea’s best-kept secrets – Olivia and Julian have made this property into their own little paradise. The property is a credit to this couple – in a nice quiet neighbourhood, they have all sorts of surprises around each corner the plant growth is well-established and very lush. I think they should be encouraged to enter the Fringe Festival in 2021! We need more gardens south of Hawera on display – something to think about! While at this garden, we had an early morning cuppa and some delicious home baking provided by Millar’s Kitchen in Waverley – Cara is Waverley’s best kept secret – spread the word her baking is “just like Mother used to bake” but modernised. There was barely a crumb left over by the end of the day! After leaving Patea, we picked up the last four people in Hawera and made our way around the South Taranaki coast turning off just over the bridge after Tokaora and made our way inland towards Okaiawa. Here we met Neta and Greg Howes. Their garden is named Jabulani that is a name of African origin meaning Be Happy. Wandering into this garden certainly made us all feel happy. This garden is nearly five years old and the work that has gone into it is amazing the Howes’ have certainly made this garden one we would love to visit again! Before leaving, Neda gave each and every one of us a packet of seeds from her garden to plant in ours! After making our way through the back roads of central Taranaki our next stop was at Greenhills garden in central Stratford. This is a small town garden that cleverly incorporates a mixed perennial garden, shrubbery and a rockery on different levels. The HUGE hostas along the back of the house had leaves as large as dinner plates, obviously the snails are kept at bay somehow. Many of us were very envious at this display. Our next stop was for a planned picnic lunch in a nice Park that turned into us taking a break in a room at the Stratford War Memorial Hall – thank goodness, for the shelter as while we were here it started to rain! We were all in for the long haul so off we went once more. This time we made our way out to the back blocks of Tarata – what would we have ever done without GPS and a trust-worthy bus driver! Here we were instructed to park on the gravel turnaround in the paddock below the house. Jason (our trusty bus driver), parked the bus up and donning rain gear with umbrella’s in hand nearly all of us hopped off and made our way past the frog pond into the side entrance of the garden where there was a wonderful display of maples, azaleas and rhodos. This is certainly and English inspired garden and when we met Bob, we all decided he certainly must feel at home here! Bob is from Southend in the UK. He and Irene have created a wonderful garden nestled in a secluded valley. We all know Bob has a tractor as well! He had to fire it up and tow the bus that was parked only minimally off the gravel track, to safety so we could all alight and make our way to the next garden! Making our way back towards Inglewood, our next stop was at Lower Durham Road at a property named Dondo. This is another appropriately names garden Dondo is an African word meaning Thanks! We had nothing of thanks after looking over Sias and Lloyd’s garden. The precision of the planting was second to none. The property is ¼ of an acre but set up to display several varieties of plants in various rooms. There was a white garden, Japanese Garden with bright red solar paper lanterns (that the Warehouse in Hawera have on special at present I discovered), a rainbow garden and a vege patch. Each room was divided by a number of hedges of various shapes and sizes. Even the colour the house was painted to compliment the colours in the garden or maybe that should be said the other way around. This was well worth the trip and is another I would recommend to others and return to myself. Back on the bus once more, we headed back to Hawera. Here we visited the garden of Margaret Keift. This property is one of the most immaculate we have ever visited. It was stunning – Margaret greeted us in her usual friendly manner and showed us around her garden – she is such an enthusiastic gardener - she certainly puts her heart and soul into this property. In every little nook and cranny there were surprises – this is another worthy of being on display to the public in the future. Being so close to the Garden Edge Garden Centre, we just had to go and have a look to see what Lynne and Peter Newell had for sale and on display. I never cease to be amazed by how when you think your garden is full to the brim you can always think you can find a space for yet another plant – many of us made purchases and then boarded the bus for a welcome drink of juice and another delicious Millar’s Kitchen morsel. Every one attending got a lucky draw prize and several got a spot prize. The day would not have been such a success without the generous sponsorship of the following people and businesses; PJ and DL Amon Contracting Limited of Waverley, Forest Management (NZ) Ltd of Waverley, Moore Markhams Waverley Accountants, Main Street Café Waverley, Waverley 4 Square Supermarket, E C Dallison and Sons Waverley, Arabica Coffee Bar in Hawera, Margaret and Phil Kiff of Waverley. Our next meeting will be Thursday 10th December. We intend meeting at 6 pm at South end of Waverley township opposite the Town Swimming Pool where instructions will be given on how to get to where we are going to visit in Wanganui. Ladies and Gentlemen should bring $2 and Supper will be provided. There will be the opportunity to purchase plants at one of the gardens we will visit so maybe have another couple of dollars tucked away in your wallets if you want to also. If we do not see you that day, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. As there are so many new faces in our towns, if you have any questions prior to the date or want a ride to our next visit (we do car pool at no cost) do not be afraid to call you are all more than welcome: Waverley: Margaret Prince (06) 346 6008 or (06) 346 7070 or Cheryl Rook on (027) 537 5560 Patea: Trish Southcombe on 06 273 8437

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 18 Nov 2020 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The eighth and final meeting for the year was held at the Alton Coronation Hall. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Claire Symes (Community Development Manager), Sara Dymond (PA), Samantha Greenhill, (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services) and 4 members of the public. Apologies from: Janine Maruera, Phil Nixon. Open Forum: Allan Caple – Pātea Community Patrol. Things are good and quiet in Pātea at the moment. Jo reported that she has had several complaints from Waverley residents that dogs have been roaming and attacking other dogs. This is concerning, but unfortunately it appears that most of these incidents aren’t being reported to the Council so can’t be acted on. Rob stressed that people must call and log any dog issues with the Council call centre on the 0800111323 Minutes from last meeting were discussed and confirmed. Matters arising: Border Rugby Club are wanting their changing rooms under the grandstand at Waverley enlarged and equipped with better toilets etc. Phil Waite has inspected the current changing rooms and will report back to the Club soon. Pātea Beach directional sign project, Claire reported on Janine’s behalf that the iwi were discussing the plans that Janine and the Community Board have designed so far. We are hoping Tilt Wind farm will assist us financially with the renovation of the Look Out in the old green waste area. It has a clear view of the wind turbines and will be a destination for sight seers. Liam updated us on the situation with roaming dogs, there are still 2 prosecutions in process in Patea, and Hawera also has dog issues, as does Waverley, which need CRMs called through to the Council and logged, so they have some proof of the incidents. Maria suggested that with summer not far away the Animal Control Officer needs to be proactive to ensure dogs in particular are being looked after. Random checks for registrations, animal welfare – water available to dogs that are tied up etc. Liam said it is something they are putting into action soon and additional resources are being implemented for December to February. Information Reports were read through by those in attendance. Claire talked about the Waverley ‘slow the traffic down’ trail that will be set up on a temporary basis next year. Plans for this can be seen at Waverley and Pātea Library Plus. Council Flats are all full at the moment, waiting list for pensioner flats. All Council Swimming Pools are to open on 12 December. They are now full staffed after their adverts asking for Pool attendants. Rob went to a Taranaki Coastal meeting recently where they had gathered a huge selection of their community organisations to share and discuss what projects etc they were involved in. It was a way to ensure that things were getting done in the district and they weren’t duplicating their resources. Rob suggests that we do something similar in 2021. We all agreed it would be beneficial to do so for our district too. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’. Or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for next year will be in available in January.

Merry Christmas from your Patea Community Board members: Maria Ferris, Jo Peacock, Dianne Lance, Rob Northcott, Jacq Dwyer. We wish you all a happy summer season ahead with family and friends.

New kitchenware for the Hunter Shaw Building – making it the perfect venue!! The Patea Community Board have funded a full set of china mugs, side plates, teaspoons, platters etc from their discretionary fund for the Hunter Shaw building in Patea. Since the Hunter Shaw building was opened after its major earthquake strengthening and renovation last year it has been lacking catering equipment. So now when people hire this beautiful heritage building for an event or meeting they don’t have to bring their own kitchenware. We also want to remind and encourage people to keep this facility in mind when thinking about a venue for an upcoming event. Its such a lovely spot, perfect for a birthday party, high tea parties, meetings and even exercise groups. For local nonprofit groups hirage is $7 per hour. For all other hirers its $10 per hour. All bookings can be made through the Council on 0800111323, or at Patea Library Plus. A regular hirer of the building is Tainui Day Centre exercise group, run by Anne Quinlan. They meet there every Thursday 9.30am – 12 noon. Its $2 per session, and at the moment they have about 15 people attend every week and have the room to fit in at least another 5 people, so put this on your calendar if this sounds like you! The first hour is exercise, strength/ balance circuit for the half an hour and then exercises from Arthritis NZ for the second half hour. Then a cuppa and social time/games for an hour. Its great to see this organisation in our town, keeping people active. The gardens are looking fresh and colourful in front of the Hunter Shaw as well. Amber carpet roses were planted in the winter, they look great with the brickwork of the building as a backdrop. And the silvery leaves of the Dusty Miller plant are planted at the back of the garden to lighten it up a bit. So if you want a venue for an up coming event ... its all here at the Hunter Shaw Building.

Some of the new china, glasses and kitchenware now in the Hunter Shaw Building. The Amber Carpet Roses are looking good in front of the silvery leaves of the Dusty Miller plants outside the Hunter Shaw.

A Great Big Thank You

To all it may concern, I wanted to put down my heartfelt thanks to all the friends I have made over the years. My friends at the LibraryPlus, Craft ladies, Standby, Women’s Institute, my Doctor and his lovely staff. To my dear neighbors, especially Tony and Graham, who all looked after me for many years. I must also mention the Volunteer Fire Brigade who carried me after I had a stroke, from my home to the waiting helicopter. I have sold my House and moved away from Patea, and I am now living in Rotorua with my daughter. During the 17 years we lived in Patea I have had nothing but kindness, friendship and hospitality from all I came in contact with. Many thanks and a Merry Christmas to you all. Lovey Pickles

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the end of the year! Our camps were amazing! Waitomo was a great destination for the Senior camp, we were lucky enough to enter the glowworm\ caves, go abseiling, visit the kiwi house and go caving. Camp is such a great experience for our students, with their confidence growing as they pushed themselves outside of their comfort zone (and survived on little sleep!). Despite the rain, the Middle room had a great time in Palmerston North, visiting Flip City and The Lido and staying overnight at the Waiinu Fishing club. The Juniors loved staying overnight at school after a visit to Te Manawa Museum and Flip City in Palmerston North. What a novelty, waking up in the classroom! Five Year 7 and 8 students joined together with Brunswick and Kai Iwi schools to play Touch rugby at Springvale park on Wednesday. Well done Maddi, Kimberley, Quinton, Robert and Adam. Thank you for coming and supporting our pop up art gallery at St Mark’s church- I was so proud of all of the children’s efforts with their art and a big shout out to our teachers for their effort to get everything completed in amongst planning for camp. Our school renovations will begin this term, we are adding a deck that will run along the outside of the school from the Junior room to the end ramp, this will provide us with an outdoor learning space, with a door that will open out through the Middle room, we’re painting the school and the middle room is getting a makeover to make it a more workable space. We can’t wait to see the finished product! Best wishes, Polly Devane - Principal A moment in time (Camp in the Waitomo caves) As soon as my feet were placed in the freezing cold water, my body started to shiver, my feet were getting more numb by the second. I could hear the whimpering whispers muttering behind my head, and people drifting the numb feet through the water like water bashing past small rocks. The glacial temperatures were rising as we were striding through the unexpected waters, everyone's breathing was becoming heavier and heavier and smoke started to puff out of our mouths, like we just had a liquid nitrogen chocolate fish. The sense of dampness trickled down my throat but on the way it wafted up my runny nose dripping water like a stalactite. The pain I was feeling crawling under the rocks was dreadful, Rocks were flicking in my face, some even got in my mouth, it was like a bullet shot right to the back of my throat, it tasted like pain. The gasp of daylight striking my eyes as we left the cave was delightful because we knew we had found or way back to safety. By Teriellen

Patea Kindergarten Wow, what a year it has been! Certainly like no other… There have been highs and lows with lots of challenges to overcome, but what sticks in mind is how we all came together when we needed to. There was a break for us all when we had to close the kindergarten for a few weeks but we kept in touch online, providing learning and resources for our children and Whanau. It was a joyful day when we could open the kindergarten again and see all the children’s smiling faces. They were so happy to be back seeing their friends again! During the year we have had many new families arrive at kindergarten and we welcome you all! We farewelled Aileen and Amanda and welcomed Jodi and Christie as our new teachers and Alva as our new teacher aide. We finally finished phase 1 and 2 of our long awaited renovations! Very exciting – we now have a new, modern kitchen, new toilets for the children and an office for the teachers. To celebrate this milestone we had an Afternoon Tea for previous and current Committee members and Supporters of the kindergarten. Some of our parents did lots of fundraising while their children attended but never got to see the finished result. It was great to finally be able to share this moment with some of them. Hopefully we will be able to finish our last stage of the renovations, which is a new entrance and an office for our administrator, in the near future. A big thank you goes out to our sponsors; TSB Community Trust, The McBroom Trust, Rural Communities Trust, The Southern Trust, Pelorus Trust and the South Taranaki District Council. Without your support this would not have been possible! Finally, thank you to our small but dedicated committee who has been fundraising tirelessly, organizing events, raffles and Anderson Pie sales amongst other things. We have spaces available next year so please call in for a visit and pick up an enrolment form or just have a look at our wonderful, welcoming centre. We are open Monday to Friday, 8.30-1.30 at 4 Derby St, Patea. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas break and summer holidays! We will open again on Tuesday the 19 of January 2021. See you then! Robyn, Ireen, Christie, Jodi, Alva and Emma

What an interesting time we have had since the last Patea Mail went out. We have been very busy at Waverley Primary during the last four weeks. We had an amazing Pet Day and Family Fun Fair and managed to raise an amazing amount for our School PFA, thanks to the support of our incredible community. Thanks again to Rickie-Lee Kiff, the Chairperson of the PFA for all of the hard work that has gone in from you and your team of parents. Another thanks goes to Dianne Sanson for all of her hard work that went into the organisation of the Pet Day. Another thank you needs to go to all of the community members that turned up and supported the events on the day. It is definitely one of the highlights of my tenure here as Principal. On the 11th November the Senior classroom, Mrs Sanson and I went to the Cenotaph here in Waverley to participate in the Remembrance ceremony. It was pleasing to see such a large turnout of community members participating in this event also. Thank you to the Waverley and Waitotara School children who participated in this special event. Especially considering the ANZAC day service was cancelled due to COVID. In November we managed to cover some Silage Stacks as a fundraiser for the school. Thanks to all of the people who have helped us out with these jobs. It is an excellent fundraising opportunity for our school and we have had fantastic support from our parents and community getting these jobs done. I would like to pay tribute and send a huge thank you to the Waverley Lion’s Club. The Waverley Lion’s Club have been donating funds every year to ensure that the Duffy Books Scheme in our school is available to all students. The Duffy books scheme puts reading books into all of our school children’s homes and without the support of the Lions club we wouldn’t be able to offer this programme to our students. On behalf of the staff, students, and families - thank you very much. Finally this week I would like to share a bit of great news for Waverley Primary School. Due to our increasing roll, we applied to the Ministry of Education to be able to employ another full time permanent teacher to take on a position in our Senior School. We have received the thumbs up from the Ministry and will be employing a teacher to start in 2021.

New Leadership at Waverley Baptist Fellowship In February Carolyn Anslo, Allan Dewar and Chris Malpas were appointed as elders at Waverley Baptist Fellowship. While Carolyn has held a leadership position within the fellowship for several years both Allan and Chris are new to Waverley. But, while they are new, they have both been involved in various churches in other places over many years, so bring a wealth of experience with them. “We would like to think this heralds a new chapter in the history of the church as it prepares to celebrate 30 years of serving the Waverley, Patea and Waitotara communities.” As well as the Sunday service the church contributes to the community in many ways through the very popular Op Shop and ‘Mercy Baskets’ support packages and Mainly Music ministeries as well as the monthly Pensioner Lunches and other contributions to good causes such as Women’s Refuge, Big Day Out, Make a Wish, Fostering Kids, Heart Kids and the NZ Autism Foundation. “We believe that Jesus call us to serve this community, and that we are ‘blessed to be a blessing’. We are currently searching out other opportunities to show God’s love in practical ways.” One thing the new elders are really keen to do is to hear from the wider community as to how they can best serve in the coming years. If you have any ideas they are keen to hear from you. Please contact 0273 870 670.

Council Supports Māori Ward A Wednesday night’s (11 November) extraordinary meeting, the South Taranaki District Council (STDC) decided to introduce a Māori Ward/s for the 2022 and 2025 local body elections. South Taranaki Mayor Phil Nixon says the decision, which was unanimously supported by all Councillors, was about demonstrating leadership and simply doing the right thing. “This decision is good for our community. As Tangata whenua, residents and ratepayers, Māori (who make up almost 20% of South Taranaki’s population) have been underrepresented at the Council table and disengaged from the electoral process for too long. This will encourage

more Māori to participate in the governance of our District and will see Council be more representative of our whole community,” says Mayor Nixon. “Research clearly shows that diverse boards operating with high levels of trust are far more successful and effective than those that don’t. We will be stronger as we work together in partnership for the good of South Taranaki – which is ultimately what we are all here for.” The current structure of Council will change with the inclusion of a Māori Ward/s though this detail will be worked through as the process develops. As an example under the Council’s current structure of 12 Councillors, the introduction of a Māori ward would mean that 10 Councillors would be elected from the general electoral population and two from the Māori electoral population, with the Mayor still being elected at large. “The South Taranaki District Council has always been a leader and innovator – not just in what we do, but in the way we do things. I was extremely pleased with the robust discussion and persuasive arguments put forward with dignity and respect by both members of the public and Councillors. It demonstrated a maturity and self-confidence sadly lacking in many parts of society today and really made me very proud of the way our community works together.”

WATCH New Documentary: When the Plague Arrives

Nearly every country in the world felt the impact of the new coronavirus, whether it was lockdowns, economic loss, or the impact of the virus itself. Yet, while the recent virus is unique in having the whole world face it together, pandemics like this have existed throughout history, and we can look to history to better understand how people in the past would regard a trial like this. A new documentary exploring plagues in the context of the story of humanity: “When the Plague Arrives” premiered on The Epoch Times website, NTD websites on 12 July. Now we can watch it online for free. Joshua Philipp, host of Crossroads, and one of the contributors to this documentary, pulled from classic literature and ancient history, and relates the lessons from the past to the world today. Humans have experienced many plagues, the reality is, humanity has survived epidemic diseases countless times, and of far deadlier magnitude. But we cannot survive this one if we lose our humanity, according to the new film. Watch the documentary by visiting bit.ly/wtpar2020 or scanning the QR code below.

Books dedicated to protecting mankind’s destiny After the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union the world rejoiced to the end of the cold war. However, several pockets of communism remained. Most notably, China, North Korea and Cuba publicly proclaim themselves to be led by communist regimes. But many other countries around the globe embrace socialism, and even America — the leader of the free world — is falling into the evil specter’s trap. Where did communism come from? Why did it appear in the universe? What is the fundamental nature of communism? What will be its fate? Now is the time to uncover the answers. The essence of communism is that it is a specter. It is made up of hatred and degenerate elements of the universe. It has a deep hatred for human beings and wants to destroy them. It is not satisfied with killing a man’s flesh body alone; after all, life does not terminate with the death of the physical body — people’s souls reincarnate. But when a person has absolutely abandoned his sense of morality, his soul will be completely eliminated. That is the ultimate, most terrifying death. Dragging humanity toward the abyss of eternal damnation is what this communist specter wants to achieve. How The Specter of Communism Is Ruling Our World seeks to reexamine the tides of history over the last several centuries and, from a high level and with a broad perspective, assess the multifarious masks and forms the devil has adopted in order to occupy and manipulate our world. The Ultimate Goal of Communism is to show people through systematic analysis how the communist specter is plotting to destroy mankind through the destruction of people’s culture and morality. Humans have now come to a critical moment in the history of the universe. Do they choose to follow the specter of communism or do they walk a righteous path as passed down by God’s Law? PS: The Ultimate Goal of Communism has two parts: China Chapter and The World Chapter. China Chapter has been published in 2018 and being translated into English. The World Chapter will be published in the near future. Please stay tuned. Source: en.tuidang.org

Te Mahana Rest Home Trust

Chairman’s Report 2020 It gives me great pleasure to present to you this Chairman’s report. We started off the year with a hiss and a roar; we had some new faces on the Trust, and I have to say they have fitted in very well and are valuable members to our small group of dedicated people. We carried out extensive renovations to the kitchen and living area of our pensioner flat 2 and I think we all agree it has made a huge improvement to that flat. It has given us a template to repeat the process in flats 1 and 3 when the timing is right. My thanks to all involved with the design, facilitation and the builders for their input and workmanship. So that was the beginning of the year, then come March/April and CODID 19 lockdown. As we all know, the elderly were the most vulnerable to this horrible pandemic and it put Te Mahana Resthome in a very precarious situation. I have the utmost admiration for the way in which staff and management handled this whole situation with professionalism and compassion, and managed to keep our most vulnerable family members safe and well. My sincere thanks to those that were working on the front line during those difficult times. I would like to thank all the members of the Trust for the work and commitment they have shown over the last year, we are in the process of carrying out some significant reviews within our trust and I greatly appreciate all the work all of you have done in keeping this communityfocused trust heading in the right direction. We are financially sound and I look forward to what the future holds. We continue to have a sound and professional relationship with our tenants, Te Mahana Ltd and look forward to working with them to bring the best outcomes for our community and their business into the future. During the yearlong term manager, Judy, decided it was time to retire and she has moved onto – I hope – relaxed greener pastures. We all wish her well for the future as we welcome the new manager, Clara. We also wish her well with her new role. Finally, to the Trust members I would like to add that we have a first class community facility, that we are entrusted to run and I think with the effort and the selfless giving of your time over the last year it continues to serve our community well and will do so long into the future. Thank you for your efforts, it is well appreciated. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Thank you, Rob Northcott, Chairman

Jason Ansley: Gold Star Service Medal In 1995 a young man lay in a coma following a motorcycle accident just north of Patea. He is probably the only person to gain his medical clearance to become a fire fighter while in a coma. Fast forward 25 years, many incidents later and thousands of kilometers on motorbikes (mostly crash free) all over the world. Jason Ansley is still just as passionate and committed to serving the Patea and wider South Taranaki community as he was when he followed in his father's footsteps, joining the Patea Fire Brigade. Jason moved through the ranks and spent many years as the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, before moving to Okiawa for a couple of years and then settling back to Patea and resuming the role of Deputy Chief Fire Officer. Jason has responded for Hawera Brigade also; his skills and knowledge are an invaluable asset to everyone. On October the 24th 2020 the Patea Fire Brigade hosted the presentation of the United Fire Brigade's Gold Star Service Medal for 25 years’ service to celebrate Jason's outstanding contribution. Jason was joined by members past and present, family, friends, delegates from around the province, and a large number of Red Knights from all over the country to help celebrate a fantastic effort by a great man. Thanks so much Jason, we all look forward to the next 25 years.
