Waverley Primary School The school year has started with excitement for all with a wide range of activities taking place. All of the students are dedicated to learning water confidence, safety and different strokes. Our whole school has been working hard on the ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe programme’ with the help of Constable Rob. The Year 2-3 students of Tawa have been very busy. We have been studying the colours and patterns found in traditional Maori art. Everyone has gained a new insight into the process required to successfully create a finished collaborative masterpiece.

Work Starts on Hunter Shaw Building

The year 4-5 students in Kōwhai Hub have also been very busy designing, making and then selling tic-tac-toes games at the School Gala. We were also very lucky to have the ‘Food for Thought’ programme come to teach us about reading different food labels and the sugars, fats and energy in each item. We really loved swimming this term and especially enjoyed using the Waverley Community Pools.

Work has started on earthquake strengthening Patea’s iconic Hunter Shaw building so it can be re-opened for public use says South Taranaki District Council’s Deputy Mayor, Phil Nixon. Mr Nixon says the project will bring the building up to 67 per cent of the New Building Standard. The 1930s Building was closed in August 2013 after a detailed engineer’s assessment found it to be earthquake prone. Mr Nixon says the Hunter Shaw building is part of the unique streetscape of Patea and of South Taranaki’s heritage. “The building is listed as a heritage building in the Council’s District Plan and is listed as a category 2 heritage item by Heritage New Zealand (previously known as the New Zealand Historic Places Trust).” “Hunter Shaw was a farmer in Whenuakura who died in 1927 and generously left behind a large sum for various charitable institutions including the building of a town library,” he says. The strengthening work involves removing the floor, installing ground and structural beams, relining the internal walls and replacing the flooring. “The aim is to keep the heritage features of the building, while bringing it up to the appropriate safety standard. Members of the public will see no change to the building exterior.” Mr Nixon says the Council is very grateful to the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund, which, along with the South Taranaki District Council are funding the project. Just two weeks ago the Council opened a newly refurbished town library in Patea.

It will soon be Easter; eggs and a bunny? Nah! This very precious time, that we Christians celebrate, called Easter, is our special time to celebrate what may appear somewhat sad, i.e. the death of Jesus on a cross. This brutal means of killing a person was common at that time in history by the Romans. It would have struck terror into the hearts of everyone who came into the city and these executions took place in full view of whoever came through the city gates. The prisoners were whipped with a whip that had shards of bones entwined in it to rip open the flesh and cause massive pain. When they crucified a person with arms stretched out wide and nailed through the side of the shin, behind the tendon from the ankle to the calf muscle, and thereby causing the chest to sag and slowly asphyxiate the prisoner. This could take days! Brutal and a very sadistic way to die. Here’s the most powerful and extraordinary purpose by God Almighty, to allow us, His created, to execute the Saviour of the world. Scripture portrays the shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sins. Many animals had shed their blood for our sins, but it was not anywhere near good enough for this purpose. God had had enough of this rather monotonous blood-letting. He knew that there needed to be one final blood sacrifice and, this is the most extraordinary outcome, God allowed us to kill His Son for the sole purpose of us having our sins forgiven and reconciling us back into a merciful and loving relationship with Him – our Father God. We cannot cover our guilt by eggs of chocolate and hot cross buns etc. This is definitely a ploy to take the trust out of Easter and place it upon our sensual selves. God never had nor will He want us to turn our backs on such a sacrifice and deny this murder ever happened! We celebrate the death of Jesus, we acknowledge that while we are sinners, He – Jesus, who was without sin – died for us all … once for all mankind! But it is not a doom and gloom time because we celebrate not only His death but his triumphant victory over death. Jesus is alive! He wants us to come to that place of repentance of our sins and, like He did when He rose victoriously from the grave, defeat death. We too will die one day, but if we have received forgiveness for all our sins, then we will rise from the dead to embrace Eternal life. This is our reason to celebrate Easter – Jesus’s total victory over sin and death! He gives us Eternal life, God’s gift to those who embrace His Son! By the way, I do like Easter eggs!! Come Lord Jesus - Ted Reeves, Patea

Friday 15th February saw the sixteenth Alton & Districts Playgroup Annual Touch Tournament held at Dale Street, Alton. As always the event was hugely supported by the local community, with a great turn out cheering on the four junior teams and six senior teams that took part in the tournament. This annual event is the sole fundraiser for the playgroup, which currently has 26 children made up from 15 families, who attend the weekly playgroup sessions on a Thursday. This year’s event raised $5034, which will be going towards a new storage shed and to top up the bark around the playground. The success of the event would not be possible without the massive support of the community, in particular the local schools that entered teams; Kakaramea School and Whenuakura School. Hello all gardeners, After a long hot Summer, days are closing in and nights are getting cooler. The morning dew is welcome for our gardens. On Wednesday 10th April we plan to have our Annual Plant Swap – this year in Patea. We should meet at 6.15 pm outside the Doctors Surgery on Lincoln Street in Patea and then be steered in the right direction. Bring along bulbs, cuttings, potted plants and books etc which we will swap (I am sure we will be able to find just one more little spot in our gardens for something extra) and then we plan to have a scrumptious Pot Luck dinner. Those attending should bring food to share and $2 to cover costs – we will have heating facilities. If you have any questions prior to the date or would like a ride to our next visit, don’t be afraid to call. All of the new residents in both communities are more than welcome to attend – just give us a call or come and see Cheryl and Margaret at Markhams Accountants in Waverley or ring Susan in Patea. Patea Community Board Meeting Notes from the Patea Community Board meeting on Wednesday 6 March 2019, 4.00 pm, provided by the Board Members. The second meeting for the year was held at the at the Waverley Community Centre,. Present were: Patea Community Board members; Ruth, and Jacq, Robert Northcott (Patea Councillor) Claire Symes (Community Development Manager), Mayor Ross Dunlop, CEO Waid Crockett, & several members of the public. Apologies from Olivia and Dianne. The Open Forum began with: • Vicki Koubaridis & Maria Ferris spoke of their wishes to have a shelter area constructed at Aotea Park in Waverley. The playground equipment the Council installed a couple of years ago is well used, and tennis lessons and hockey are played in the Park, but there is nowhere for children and parents to sit out of the sun or rain. The park is a popular stop off area for tourists passing through too. Claire is going to work with Vicki and Maria on design of the structure and exact location. • Kate Murdoch, Treasurer of Patea Rugby and Sports Club Inc spoke about the on-going issue of the Patea Tennis Courts. They are in a badly deteriorating state and are now deemed unusable, by outside tennis clubs, who will no longer play at Patea. The 3rd court is inadequate since the wall between the Pool was put too close to it. Patea Tennis has about 30 members and has amalgamated with the Rugby Club. At this stage the Club cannot apply for funding, as the Council owns the courts. They request the Council assist with the funding of this and make a recommendation to funding organisations that this facility is for the use of all the community and if funding is received from an organisation, the Council will match it. Council will look into this with Kate. • Sue Walkinton spoke again of her sadness to see the continuing derelict state of the Patea Hospital site. As it is private property, there is unfortunately nothing the Council can do. Sue is now moving to Whanganui, we wish her well and thanked her for her valuable part in the community over the years. She also informed us that Dr Kellet is coming to Patea in the near future for a reunion party. • Rob is still receiving complaints of rubbish in the Cool Stores. Unfortunately there is little that can be done about this, as the buildings are privately owned, apart from taking the number plate of anyone seen dumping rubbish here and reporting to Police or STDC. He is going to inspect the site with Ruth and Jacq after the meeting and contact the owner. • Allan Caple and Doug Rosewarne from Community Patrol gave us an update of the current situation on the streets of Patea and Waverley. Four-wheeler motorbikes are a problem in Waverley at the moment, being driven on the playing fields and ripping up the turf. Ross meet with Constable Kyle Davie, and requested he send a police rep to each Community Board meeting. • Jacq presented an application to the Community Board for two drinking fountains, one each outside the Patea and Waverley Library’s. This was accepted with full funding given. The new garden design for the Patea Library will incorporated this. And funding was granted for two billboards of Nicky Gray’s photos, to go on walls in Patea, two more will be organised in the next few months. General Business was: • Council are meeting with the Patea Boardriders club soon to determine the future of the building above the Patea Beach toilets. • STDC entered a local government award for their idea of providing ‘Ambassadors’ for Freedom Camping areas, this concept has been very successful. • The Community Board will fund the $208 required to tune the Patea Piano. It is almost ready to be installed outside Patea Four Square. • Dog control update give. There are several roaming dogs, especially in Patea that are an issue. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Council’ then go to ‘Meetings’. Or view them at Patea or Waverley Library. Your Community Board Members are: Ruth Mackay (Chair) Olivia McQuillan (Deputy) Dianne Lance, & Jacq Dwyer. Robert Northcott (Patea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 17 April, 4pm, Ngamatapouri Hall, 4325 Waitotara Valley Road, Ngamatapouri Wednesday 29 May, 4pm, Waitotara & District Hall, 12 Kaipo Street, Waitotara Wednesday 10 July, 4pm, Patea Old Folks Hall, Egmont Street, Patea Wednesday 21 August, 4pm, venue to be confirmed

Zero possum update Oākura residents on a mission to eradicate possums from the town are helping catch a possum a day. About 50 possums have been found in urban backyards, parks and reserves in Oākura since 25 January 2019, when possum hunters Andrea and Max Hoegh, started working with residents to eradicate them. “On average we’re catching a possum a day in backyards, in Matekai Park, near commercial buildings, they’re popping up everywhere,” says Andrea. The dedicated couple returned from their wedding, in Ireland, and post-phoned their honeymoon earlier this year to help eradicate possums from urban Oākura. The seaside town is part of a trial to eradicate possums as part of Towards Predator-Free Taranaki; the trial covers about 4,500 hectares of urban, rural and conservation land between the Timaru Stream and Oākura River from Pukeiti to the coast – it’s the first time possum eradication has been attempted across different land types in mainland New Zealand. “The support from Oākura’s community is awesome, we’ve had regular reports of suspected possums from residents calling us on the 0800 number it’s been fantastic,” Max says. Towards Predator-Free Taranaki is a region-wide community project, supported by $11.7 million from Predator Free 2050 Ltd.

Turi Indoor Bowls The Turi Indoor Bowls season has started. We have had two roll up nights and a social night when Waverley Druids members came to visit us. Small prizes were presented to the successful skip, three, two and lead. The evening concluded with a delicious supper. Six regular members from last year have left the district or retired from indoor bowls so we would like to see some new members join the club to keep indoor bowls alive as a sport in Patea. A reminder we play at the Patea Area School Assembly Hall on Tuesday nights. Assemble at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. New members are most welcome and new members go into a draw to win their subscription back. Subscriptions are very cheap at only $30-00 for adults and $12-00 for children under 18 years of age. All equipment is provided we just ask that you wear flat soled shoes so come along and give indoor bowls a go. It would be an opportunity for new residents of Patea and the surrounding districts to meet some new friends. Term 1, 2019 In light of recent events our school took part in the recent nationwide “Colour Day” Event which involved raising funds for those that were affected by the tragedies in Christchurch. The students wore colourful clothes and at 1.40pm Friday 22nd March we observed a minute’s silence. To conclude our students performed a haka in remembrance of those who lost their lives and their whānau that are grieving, may they rest in peace. A famous quote comes to mind from Martin Luther King Jnr as we contemplate what has happened, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.” Aroha atu ki ngā tāngata katoa. Kaupapa This Term our kaupapa is “Ko au, Ko Koe” and looking at Legends and “Our Identity”. We are learning about our local area, our whakapapa (genealogy) through pepehā and who is in our whānau and will be including some local history and relating it back to some of the stories from our own iwi. We will conclude this unit with a Noho Marae to consolidate all that our tamariki are learning. We will also be hosting another school who are joining with us to have their first marae experience. Kapahaka From Week 1 our weekly sessions with our awesome tutor Matua Mike have continued. He makes learning accessible and fun for all. A session may include kapahaka, mau rākau, waiata, karakia, and a variety of games to give the tamariki exposure to a variety of opportunities while incorporating Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga. We were privileged to be a part of the pōwhiri and re-opening of the renovated Patea Library Plus and our students performed for the Mayor, guests and members of the public who gathered for this occasion. Ka pai tamariki mā. Enviroschools Being an Enviroschool we are always looking at making connections between ourselves and our environment and starting to think about more sustainable practices. As part of our Inquiry we are looking at Our Identity and how we fit in our environment and the connections we have that link us to the land, our whenua. The tamariki have been learning about the different Kaitiaki and the specific areas that these Ātua Māori relate to. Sport - Hākinakina Some of our students are soon to start the netball season. We have combined with Kakaramea and several students have opted to participate in this. Watch this space for further updates of their progress. Special Character We celebrated Shrove Tuesday a few weeks ago and the tamariki made pancakes and discussions were had regarding the significance of pancakes for Shrove Tuesday, on the Wednesday we attended Mass at St Patrick’s church celebrating Ash Wednesday. We are well into Lent and in class there have been great discussions about what we could give up for lent, some of our tamariki have decided to give up their cell phone, eating lollies and chocolates. It was difficult for some to want to give up something they really enjoy. Points of interest: We are looking at new and exciting ways of becoming better Digital Citizens, which includes learning for both staff and students. Incorporating Digital Technology into our everyday school life. Small class sizes, inclusiveness and all students participating and engaging in real life learning and building sustainable practices for the future under the umbrella of our special character school. Come and have a look to see for yourself. New and exciting kaupapa coming up, including some of our Enviroschools projects. Regular articles in the Patea and Waverley Press as well as our continued updates on our school website and Facebook page which enables us to give regular feedback using a variety of mediums. Welcome to Whaea Alyssa Paamu who has volunteered her services to our school to gain some insight into teaching. God bless you all, Saint Joseph’s School - Patea Dylan and Sofia working on their phonics.

New Look Pātea LibraryPlus Re-Opened

A fresh, new look, Patea LibraryPlus was officially opened yesterday (Wednesday 13 March) by South Taranaki District Mayor, Ross Dunlop. The opening was a real community affair with around 60 members of the public in attendance, as well as Councillors, Community Board Members and students from St Joseph’s School who put on a short performance. Mayor Dunlop says the $300,000 worth of refurbishments, which included reroofing and recladding, have been completed on time and on budget and represents a significant investment in the Patea Community. “As well as the outside work, some interior work has also been done including renovating an under-used room to turn it into a space for our younger citizens to hang out in. The room has sliding doors which makes the room multipurpose - staff can open up the space for large events or groups, or close the room off if there is a meeting being held,” says Ross. “The idea for the room actually came from feedback from the youth when they mentioned wanting to have a more colourful and bright library space to spend time in.” While refurbishments were underway, the LibraryPlus had been operating out of the Patea Old Folks Hall and Mayor Dunlop says the staff are pleased to be back in their home. “Patea LibraryPlus is one of seven LibraryPlus centres throughout the district and represents part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to our small towns,” he says. “It’s at the heart of the community and we hope everyone enjoys the LibraryPlus centre’s new look.” Signage and landscaping for the LibraryPlus are still to be completed.

Why do we Celebrate Easter in April (and sometimes in March)?

We have just passed the point of balance at Autumn Equinox where night and day are of equal length. In the northern hemisphere, this same point in time is the Spring Equinox. Among the Anglo-Saxon tribes, and today in Pagan circles, Eostre is the Goddess of the dawn, of Spring, fertility and re-birth. The beginning of Spring was known as Estormonath which meant ‘the month of openings’ or ‘the month of beginnings.’ The modern holiday of Easter is derived from the name Eostre, and the associated myths involving the fertility of rabbits and the potential of new life in eggs. In the northern hemisphere Easter is celebrated in Spring. Easter in New Zealand is out of step with its original seasonal cycle by being celebrated in Autumn, six months away from Spring, and relies on the calendar rather than natural observances. In fact, the date of Easter is set by the Christian Church as the first Sunday after the full moon following the Equinox – rather a Pagan rationale one would think, and the reason for it falling on different dates each year. This year the full moon coincided with the Equinox, making for a powerful energetic coincidence, and causing Easter to fall after the Late Harvest Moon in April. Despite the incorrect season for the celebrations, the opportunity to come together as a family, or as friends, to participate in the mystery of re-birth is valuable. The Easter Egg is the symbol of this. The Anglo-Saxons painted eggs with their hopes and dreams and presented them as a gift to Eostre. These eggs were then buried in the Earth, so that the Earth Mother would know the dreams of her children, in the hope that she would see fit to help them realise their desires. This simple ritual has been overlaid with the Christian story of re-birth. This is ok so long as the roots for celebration are not forgotten. With the inevitability of the layering of history – or Her story – its up to each individual to choose how and when to celebrate the essence of Easter and the joy of newness, the potential of growth, and the budding and blossoming of ideas. For myself, this type of personal questioning truly belongs in Spring. Right now, as we slide into the darker months of the year the focus is on introspection and what has come to fruition through prior efforts, and what has been harvested as a result. It is time to notice what is fading and no longer necessary, and making way for the void of the infinite, in the rest of Winter. Victoria Brown, Patea

New Look Patea Community Patrol supported by many

The Patea Community Patrol was officially established in October 2017. Since then several avenues have been pursued to increase the profile of the Patea branch of CPNZ, and efforthave paid off. Patea Community Patrol co-ordinator Allan Caple said today that major sponsorship and grant monies have been secured over the past few months. Here today is the new Patea Community Patrol car thanks to community funding from TSB Community Trust. Just as importantly is the ongoing funding from Mobil New Zealand Limited for fuel to keep the Patrol car on the road. This is supported by long-standing maintenance and compliance sponsorship from Universal Motors. Patea Community Patrol has received several smaller donations in cash, equipment and skilled services to increase its overall capacity to serve its community. These include Carlyle Womens’ Institute, Kai-Tel Limited, Peter Michaels, Puritia Consultants Limited, and the ongoing sales of wood and cones by Gary Murphy and the crew. COGS funding was also received for new uniforms and safety equipment. The increased professionalism shown by the Patea Community Patrol is reflected in the allocation of a Police Liaison Officer to work directly with the patrol. “We are extremely appreciative of all the support shown to the Patea Community Patrol. Having this type of sponsorship enables us to increase our visibility and our patrolling efforts. It is open recognition and partnership for providing safer communities” say Allan. The next focus is on recruiting new members. Patrollers need to hold a full licence and be Police vetted for the role. The time required to participate is approximately 5-10 hours per month, consisting of one or two nightly patrols plus training and a monthly meeting. This is not a lot of time to commit to this voluntary organisation to ensure its longevity.

If you are interested in joining please phone: Allan Caple 027 277 2624. Below: left to right: Gary Murphy, Allan Caple and Michael Clarkson with the new Patea Community Patrol car at Mobil Patea, acknowledging sponsorship from TSB and Mobil NZ

Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ - It’s not just about ideas, it’s about making ideas happen! Our school is full of change-makers and we have recently had our Impact Team meeting which some of our year six students applied to be part of. This group are ready to make a real difference and contribute to our school and wider community. They are leaders who have decided they would like to promote the school values and are already showing that they have some excellent ideas. We look forward to sharing some of their initiatives with you over the year. We also had a group of students who are passionate about our marine life and have worked with Elvisa Robb from Experiencing Marine Reserves as part of inquiry and Seaweek. They are now working on projects to help protect our ocean. Staff have also been busy with our own professional learning. We have had two fantastic days with CORE education focusing on writing through digital fluency and also professional learning around Literacy Planet and the upcoming Board of Trustees elections. Welcome to our new students - Cameron and Kylie Jujnovich who join us from Matamata. We hope that you enjoy your time at Whenuakura School. Above is just some of what we have been doing at Whenuakura School. We have also had students represent us in the Southern Shield League Tournament, Weetbix Tryathlon, and Waverley Cricket Tournament. Congratulations to all of our learners who continue to give things a go and always strive to do their best. Engaged Learners at the E-Pro8 Competition - Engineer, problem solve, and innovate

Excerpt from the Whanganui Chronicle and written by Jesse King: We've all seen juicers for sale in appliance stores and some of us might even own one, but have you ever heard of an automated juice shaker that drives the finished product to you? That's what four students from Whenuakura School in Patea made when they won the EPro8 Challenge Taranaki grand final in New Plymouth last week. It was vindication for South Taranaki's Isobelle Sorenson, Oliver Crawford, Lorcan Honeyfield and Jack Hurley who came up agonisingly short in the 2018 final finishing second. Whenuakura School principal Kat Haerewa said she was very proud of the team. "We're a small rural school, but I think it's that number eight wire attitude that came into play," Haerewa said. "They jumped up straight away when they were announced as the winners. On the way home one of them said 'I can't believe it, we're just a bunch of country kids'. They were overjoyed." EPro8 pits 12 teams of four students against each other in a series of challenges requiring engineering, problem solving and innovative skills. Each team has a workstation containing equipment such as gears, wheels, pulleys, joiners, nuts, bolts, tools, aluminium framing, motors and electronics. They are then given a booklet with four challenges inside that have varying levels of difficulty. They can choose which ones to take on, trying to earn as many points as possible in a two and a half hour time limit. Haerewa said she was keen to get Whenuakura School on board with the competition because of the required skills involved. "Part of our vision is to build future-focused learners and to prepare them for whatever it is that they want to do," she said. "This is something that they're passionate about. They like making things, they like building things and we follow their passion."

Up to 100 people attended the Taranaki final at Sacred Heart Girls' College in New Plymouth and six people went in support of Whenuakura and Haerewa said it was an exciting finish. "They have the points running on a screen throughout the competition, so we knew we were in with a chance of winning, but it was very close," Haerewa said. "One parent was actually biting her nails because it was so nerve-racking. We couldn't speak, we just observed and had to see them through their struggles. "It was really exciting to see their smiles at the end." The students received certificates and a trophy with moveable parts for their efforts.

Community-Minded - Fright Night Fundraisers We would like to show our appreciation of our community for supporting our Fright Nights which were an overwhelming success. This is all thanks to our to our Board of trustees, the prop builders, the scarers, the helpers, the sponsors and of course the 945 people who came through over the 4 nights. The preparation for these weekends is huge and we appreciate the hours everyone puts in. The money raised from this fundraiser is a huge contribution towards the wonderful learning assistants we have at Whenuakura School. So once again - thank you all so much! Principal’s Address

Patea Area School

Tena Koutou, The month of March has been a month of great joys and great sadness. As a school, we have all been deeply affected by the Christchurch tragedy. The way our students and staff have responded has filled me with pride, proving that even in the darkness there is hope. In the wake of the tragedy our students have been finding different ways to express themselves. Some stunning examples can be found on this page. This has been an opportunity for our newly announced prefect team to engage with the community. During the Hawera memorial service they conducted themselves with poise and dignity. On Friday the 15th as the terrible news started to filter through on the radio I was on my way up to WOMAD to watch four of our students sing on stage as part of the opening ceremony. 100 students representing different schools around Taranaki stepped onto the stage and began to sing. The song written by the students only days before had very moving lyrics “we are all different, but the same in unity.” It was a very poignant moment, a powerful moment and a statement of who we are as a nation. Not only has Patea found success on the stage, the wonderful students of Patea Area School have also proven an aptitude towards technology and innovation. Our year 5/6 Epro8 team used their mechanical know how to take 3rd place in the Taranaki final after winning the regional qualifier. What a fantastic achievement for our kura. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next year. Last week we held our senior school Athletics. It was a great opportunity for our students to show participation and excellence. The highlights as always, were the house chants and the team relays. Not surprisingly the teacher’s team beat both Carlyle and Aotea. Better luck next year tamariki. Our teachers have also been showing our PAS PRIDE values by taking their skills and knowledge to Tuvalu. As part of a UNESCO initiative, Matua Anaru and Whaea Katrina flew to the tiny pacific island of Funafuti. They worked with the local teachers to help implement Positive Behavior strategies after corporal punishment was recently abolished. Based on the feedback given, the visit will greatly benefit the students and teachers of Tuvalu. If that wasn’t enough, whole day and half day courses have begun. We have students climbing mountains, writing code for robots and cooking feasts in the cooking room. With so many experiences on offer it’s no wonder students love this aspect of their education at Patea Area School. Finally, with the uncertainty we experience in the world, it gives me such hope that today’s students will be tomorrow’s leaders. I can honestly say, that the students I meet on a daily basis fill me with pride and optimism. They are smart, funny, kind and most of all very human. It reminds me that “growing good people for a changing world” isn’t just some slogan. It’s a calling. Nga mihi James Davidson Principal, Patea Area School

Misty was one of four selected singers to take on a solo role, a huge achievement considering the amount of talent in the room. The van rides to and from the event showed off all our students wonderful voices. The students wrote these words on the Wednesday and on opening night of WOMAD, amidst such sadness our students along with the others sang out the following words…. The bridge: “We make our difference with our own words, Life isn’t perfect but we give it worth You make the meaning of your own life We are all different but the same in unity Hapaitia te ara tika pumau ai te rangatiratanga mo nga uri whakatipu.” (Foster the pathway of knowledge to strength, independence and growth for future generations) -Emily Davidson

Introducing Candice Burgher, the new year 2/3 teacher

WOMAD

Daemon, Te Rauhui, Misty and Tileah enjoyed the opportunity to attend a day long song writing workshop with artists from WOMAD. The song they wrote was the opening number for WOMAD 2019. Students collaborated with other high school students to write a verse and the bridge to a song inspired by Taranaki, Family, Home and Future. Students began by brainstorming ideas in small groups and then collaborating on giant sized pieces of paper. A highlight for me, as the representing teacher from our kura was when Te Rauhui stood at the whiteboard and lead the 45 strong group of students in their pronunciation and understanding of Te Reo Maori. The addition of Te Reo to the bridge was contributed by their own break out group.

Hi my name is Candice Burgher. I will be joining Patea Area School in Term 2 as the Year 2/3 Class Teacher. I am originally from Oamaru and have spent the last 2 years teaching in London and seeing a bit of Europe. I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with family and friends. I’m really excited to be making the move to Taranaki and checking out everything it has to offer, as well as starting my teaching career in New Zealand with Patea Area School. I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Kia Ora Koutou everyone, We have been really busy at school lately! The children are thoroughly enjoying our topic, The Great War. The seniors have written excellent letters as if they were a soldier in the trenches, writing home to their loved ones. Yesterday was a day of trench making. The seniors spent the entire day building these amazing trenches. Please come along to school and look at their incredible work. Fonterra Visit A few weeks ago, we had a visit from Fonterra. This was part of the winning prize that Cooper Mackintosh received for designing the best Christmas card in Taranaki. Along with having his work published, Fonterra sent a tanker down to school. The children had an awesome time. They asked so many questions and learnt a lot-the teachers did too! A lot of fun was had, climbing in, on and around the tanker. It was a great way to learn about an important industry in our community. Even better, the tanker driver was Cooper’s dad! And ... they bought ice creams for everyone to show what the milk is used for. Thanks Cooper and Fonterra!

An Interview with…

Waiouru Army Museum Trip What a superb day out. The staff at the army museum were fantastic. They were well prepared for our visit and dressed up in WW1 soldier and medic attire. The kids had a blast, they were so focussed, asked amazing questions and blew the museum staff away with their knowledge. The juniors learnt about the animal heroes of WW1 such as, Lulu the Chicken, who became a pet and used to go berserk and warn the soldiers of imminent danger. The seniors had a roleplay simulated situation. Several children were dressed up as wounded soldiers. It took some time to get prepped with gunshot wounds, bruising and lots of fake blood! The rest of the class came in and had to assess the situation, medically assess them and put them on stretchers, all whilst keeping low due to gunfire as the battle continued. The children gained a very clear picture of the realities of war and trench life.

Final Farewell It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write this. After ten years of working at Waitotara School, I will be moving on. I have accepted a Principal’s position at Brunswick School. I absolutely love this school, and all the people who have become like a family to me. I am immensely proud of what I achieved as Principal of this wonderful little school. We now have an amazing staff, who all genuinely care about the students. The hardest part for me will be saying goodbye to the children. I will still have an important role to play at Waitotara School. I will continue to be a school parent, Aunty and a local resident of Waitotara. Jane Corcoran Regrettably, the Board of Waitotara School has accepted Jane’s resignation. We are very sad to see Jane go but be assured the school is in a great place and will continue to run at the exceptional level of education you have always received. We have outstanding staff and are grateful for all the knowledge and expertise Jane has shared with us as staff, whanau, community, board members and students. Jane has been with the school for 10 years and it will be hard to say goodbye, for her and us. We thank Jane for all her passion, commitment and for taking our little school and nurturing it to what it is today. It will be hard to fill Jane’s shoes as she has raised the bar so high. But we as a board will take on this challenge to recruit the best principal for our school, community and students. We are excited to let you know Polly Devane has accepted the roll as Acting Principal for the next two terms while we go through the recruitment process. Kind regards, The Board of Trustees.

Tu Te Hoe TT41 On January 14 2019 Tai Tonga 41 Outriggers Canoe Club launched Kiwa on Te Awanui o Taikehu / Patea River with the people. Over 70 days, 132 children and adults, aged from 2 years to 60+, boarded Kiwa. Some just to give it a go, some for a whanau hoe, some because they found themselves standing next to the waka and got told to get in...lol and some to train. We extended our training area from the York Street bouy to the boat ramp, up to train bridge - 2km each way. With some going out to Kakaramea 5-7km each way, and one crew even further. A wero, challenge, was put to everyone to hoe waka in Whanganui at the Raukotahi Marae Waka Ama Sprint Challenge on the 3rd March 2019. 36 paddlers from New Plymouth, Hawera, Patea and Waverley took up the wero and represented Ngarauru marae, Waioturi and Takirau marae on the Whanganui river. We pulled the fast time on the river at 1.22.85 and all our teams did awesome both on and off the water. We are currently training for our first marathon in Taupo next month the “Te Wheke Challenge a 7km and 21km race. We hope to participate in the Rotohoe series in June, July, Aug 8-10 km. Nga mihi to everyone that has supported us since our launching, mowing, spraying and maintaining the area down where we launch, moving and fixing our 2nd waka Rehua, fixing our hoe, picking up the gear, buying raffles and promoting our kaupapa. Thank you to Sam Murphy from the PTA for the koha of vouchers. Always a blessing to be on our awa, twice the blessing to be on there with our people. Tu Te Hoe TT41

Maxwell Kindergarten Kia Ora koutou, This month we have enjoyed many days of play and learning outdoors at our Kindergarten as we enjoy the lovely days of sun and warmth. Many children have been keen to gather up our tent, driftwood, picnic blankets, trolleys and stainless bowls and cups and create camping sites in different locations in the playground. Thoughtful setting up and discussions were had about making sure not to build the ‘campfire’ of driftwood too close to the tree branches and not so close to the tents. It was agreed that the children each had their own small tents, so as not to get too crowded, and pillows and blankets were laid out inside (which also helped to anchor the tents from those windy days). Many hours were spent making each other ‘dinner’ and ‘a cup of tea’ and sitting around the campsite, with constant discussion about how to improve of their new living arrangements and camp surroundings… Their play continued throughout the week with variations of set-ups in the track in our bush at the back of the playground, inside the climbing boxes and different areas outside. The new challenge became securing the load to the trolley to transport it! And after getting frustrated with twine not working, we discovered two rolls of cellotape works really well! One of our parents is kindly donating an old tent of theirs after our discussions and watching the children so focussed and busy, so that will add another level of enjoyment and exploration in the coming weeks. Enjoy this sunshine! Nga manaakitanga, Katherine, Michaela and Annie
