Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
ne of the most unforgettable years in our lifetimes is finally over and 2021 is here! With the new year, I recommend we forget the notion of making resolutions. This new year presents us with opportunities to practice faithful stewardship — that is, to view the start of 2021 as a time for opportunities instead of resolutions, and to choose to be the disciples we are called to be. The choice is ours, as it has always been. I know all too well that each New Year’s Day on January 1, we do more than just begin a new calendar year. We make all kinds of promises, articulate expectations, and express hopes, desires and dreams. I don’t know who started that custom, but I do know I have spent years attempting with the best intentions to follow my own resolutions, only to become disappointed that most are forgotten all too soon. Therefore, it occurred to me that this year, I need a new and fresh approach to this. Perhaps we all need a new perspective. After all, isn’t that what faithful stewards do best? The to-do list for 2021 should be seen as a list of opportunities to practice the discipleship intended by Jesus — not just at the beginning of each year, but each day throughout the year when presented with opportunities to be a Christian disciple. In doing so, we are practicing the stewardship way of life. Maybe this year, each of us will be open to embracing the connection between discipleship and stewardship. Discipleship and stewardship are indeed closely linked, so much so that it clearly defines our Catholic spirituality and touches every aspect of the life of the Church. I hope that the same vision is clearly in your sight — the moment of discovery that stewardship is a way of life, a defining moment presenting opportunities to live what we believe, using our time, talents and treasure to reach others around us. Therefore, as we close out one of the most eventful years in modern history, and are at the start of a new year filled with promise and hopefulness, I ask you to join me in celebrating the opportunities that will present themselves during 2021. We need to keep our eyes, ears and hearts open to them. They will be there when we least expect them. Our Lord’s call to be faithful stewards of the gifts we have been given is already echoing in our hearts as we have concluded a season of giving in which God’s gift to us, Jesus Christ, remains the perfect gift that keeps on giving to each of us. If we continue to receive our Lord with grateful hearts, we can respond in our own way of giving time, talent and treasure back as opportunities to become Christ for others.
or fin termina uno de los años más memorables de nuestras vidas y llega el 2021! Con el nuevo año, recomiendo no olvidar el concepto de hacer resoluciones. Este nuevo año nos presenta oportunidades para un fiel discipulado corresponsable – es decir, veamos el inicio del 2021 como tiempo de oportunidades, no resoluciones, y escojamos ser los discípulos que debemos ser. Es nuestra elección, como siempre lo ha sido. Sé bien que cada nuevo año el 1 de Enero, hacemos más que comenzar el calendario. Hacemos toda suerte de promesas, establecemos expectativas, y expresamos esperanzas, deseos y sueños. No sé cómo empezó la costumbre, pero sé que he pasado años intentando, con las mejores intenciones seguir mis resoluciones, solamente para desencantarme y olvidarlas demasiado rápido. Entonces, se me ocurre que este año, necesito intentar algo distinto. Al fin, ¿no se supone que los discípulos corresponsables lo hagamos bien? La lista de pendientes para el 2021 debe tomarse como una lista de oportunidades para ser el discípulo que espera Jesús – no sólo al comenzar el año, sino cada día del año cuando se presenta la oportunidad de ser un discípulo cristiano. Al hacerlo, practicamos la corresponsabilidad como estilo de vida. Tal vez este año, cada uno de nosotros esté abierto a aceptar la conexión entre el discipulado y la corresponsabilidad. Discipulado y corresponsabilidad están íntimamente ligados, tanto que claramente define nuestra espiritualidad Católica y toca cada aspecto de la vida de la Iglesia. Espero que la misma visión esté claramente en su visión – el momento del descubrimiento de que corresponsabilidad es un estilo de vida, un momento de definición que presenta oportunidades para vivir lo que creemos, empleando nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro para llegar a quienes nos rodean. Entonces, al terminar uno de los años más cargados de la historia moderna, y comenzando un nuevo año lleno de promesa y esperanza, les pido me acompañen a celebrar las oportunidades que se nos presentan en el 2021. Necesitamos abrir nuestros ojos, oídos y corazones a ellas. Estarán ahí cuando menos las esperemos. La llamada de nuestro Señor a ser discípulos corresponsables de los dones recibidos claramente hace eco en nuestro corazón al terminar una temporada de dádivas en que. Dios nos da un regalo, Jesucristo, que es el regalo perfecto que se nos sigue entregando. Si seguimos recibiendo al Señor con corazón agradecido, podemos responder entregando nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro en oportunidades de ser Cristo para otros.
