future wife, Diana, and realized that he was being called to a vocation in family life. However, the Lord wasn’t yet done with Deacon Walt. In the 2000s, with the support of Diana, he discerned a vocation to the permanent diaconate. When Deacon Walt retired from the private sector several years ago, he was asked to become the Business Manager at St. Catherine of Siena. There, he was aided by his years of experience as what he terms a “human protocol converter” with EDS, where he had helped clients implement new IT systems and procedures. Following his work as Business Manager at St. Catherine, the diocese asked Deacon Walt to be the Chief of Staff at the cathedral. Now, he is excited to be filling a similar position at St. Michael. The Chief of Staff supports, reports to the Pastor, Fr. B and coordinates, supports, supervises the administrative responsibilities for St. Michael parish. “The pastor and myself are two sides of the same coin,” Deacon Walt says of his role here. “He’s the spiritual leader of the parish, and for all things temporal in the parish — the administrator of the parish — that’s me.” When Deacon Walt first learned he was being assigned Chief of Staff at St. Michael, he looked up the parish vision and mission statements, and was thrilled to see stewardship at the core of our identity. “I was very excited to see stewardship in the mission because I’m a big believer in the stewardship model,” he says. “The four pillars of prayer, hospitality, faith formation and service are important to me. People have a tendency to compartmentalize their lives, and stewardship strives to knock that down. So you’re the same person at work and at home with the family that you are in church on Sunday — really living the faith and not just doing stuff.” While Deacon Walt’s primary pastoral work will continue to take place at St. Catherine, he will also be seen on the altar at St. Michael helping out with Masses here and there. During parish business hours, he may be found in the office as Chief of Staff. He looks forward to getting to know everyone in our faith community. “I like the dynamic part of what I do,” Deacon Walt says. “The longer I thought about this position [when I was assigned here], the more excited I became. St. Michael is a beautiful parish. The mission of the parish is to bring people closer to God, and as long as we continue to do that, I’m going to be a happy guy. We never want to lose sight of that.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
ne of the most unforgettable years in our lifetimes is finally over and 2021 is here! With the new year, I recommend we forget the notion of making resolutions. This new year presents us with opportunities to practice faithful stewardship — that is, to view the start of 2021 as a time for opportunities instead of resolutions, and to choose to be the disciples we are called to be. The choice is ours, as it has always been. I know all too well that each New Year’s Day on January 1, we do more than just begin a new calendar year. We make all kinds of promises, articulate expectations, and express hopes, desires and dreams. I don’t know who started that custom, but I do know I have spent years attempting with the best intentions to follow my own resolutions, only to become disappointed that most are forgotten all too soon. Therefore, it occurred to me that this year, I need a new and fresh approach to this. Perhaps we all need a new perspective. After all, isn’t that what faithful stewards do best? The to-do list for 2021 should be seen as a list of opportunities to practice the discipleship intended by Jesus — not just at the beginning of each year, but each day throughout the year when presented with opportunities to be a Christian disciple. In doing so, we are practicing the stewardship way of life. Maybe this year, each of us will be open to embracing the connection between discipleship and stewardship. Discipleship and stewardship are indeed closely linked, so much so that it clearly defines our Catholic spirituality and touches every aspect of the life of the Church. I hope that the same vision is clearly in your sight — the moment of discovery that stewardship is a way of life, a defining moment presenting opportunities to live what we believe, using our time, talents and treasure to reach others around us. Therefore, as we close out one of the most eventful years in modern history, and are at the start of a new year filled with promise and hopefulness, I ask you to join me in celebrating the opportunities that will present themselves during 2021. We need to keep our eyes, ears and hearts open to them. They will be there when we least expect them. Our Lord’s call to be faithful stewards of the gifts we have been given is already echoing in our hearts as we have concluded a season of giving in which God’s gift to us, Jesus Christ, remains the perfect gift that keeps on giving to each of us. If we continue to receive our Lord with grateful hearts, we can respond in our own way of giving time, talent and treasure back as opportunities to become Christ for others.

Este nuevo año nos presenta oportunidades para un fiel discipulado corresponsable – es decir, veamos el inicio del 2021 como tiempo de oportunidades, no resoluciones, y escojamos ser los discípulos que debemos ser. Es nuestra elección, como siempre lo ha sido. Sé bien que cada nuevo año el 1 de Enero, hacemos más que comenzar el calendario. Hacemos toda suerte de promesas, establecemos expectativas, y expresamos esperanzas, deseos y sueños. No sé cómo empezó la costumbre, pero sé que he pasado años intentando, con las mejores intenciones seguir mis resoluciones, solamente para desencantarme y olvidarlas demasiado rápido. Entonces, se me ocurre que este año, necesito intentar algo distinto. Al fin, ¿no se supone que los discípulos corresponsables lo hagamos bien? La lista de pendientes para el 2021 debe tomarse como una lista de oportunidades para ser el discípulo que espera Jesús – no sólo al comenzar el año, sino cada día del año cuando se presenta la oportunidad de ser un discípulo cristiano. Al hacerlo, practicamos la corresponsabilidad como estilo de vida. Tal vez este año, cada uno de nosotros esté abierto a aceptar la conexión entre el discipulado y la corresponsabilidad. Discipulado y corresponsabilidad están íntimamente ligados, tanto que claramente define nuestra espiritualidad Católica y toca cada aspecto de la vida de la Iglesia. Espero que la misma visión esté claramente en su visión – el momento del descubrimiento de que corresponsabilidad es un estilo de vida, un momento de definición que presenta oportunidades para vivir lo que creemos, empleando nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro para llegar a quienes nos rodean. Entonces, al terminar uno de los años más cargados de la historia moderna, y comenzando un nuevo año lleno de promesa y esperanza, les pido me acompañen a celebrar las oportunidades que se nos presentan en el 2021. Necesitamos abrir nuestros ojos, oídos y corazones a ellas. Estarán ahí cuando menos las esperemos. l mes pasado, la Academia Preescolar St. Michael dio la bienvenida a su nueva directora, Alyssa Roper. Aunque Alyssa es nueva a la función, es un rostro familiar en el preescolar. Alyssa empezó a enseñar música en la Academia St. Michael el mismo año que matriculó su hijo mayor. Luego de dos años como maestra de música, pasó al aula de 4 años, donde enseñó por 13 años. El sentido de comunidad que comparten maestras, estudiantes, y familias han hecho que el colegio sea un segundo hogar. “Amo mi trabajo,” dice. “Me encanta trabajar con los niños y el equipo. Si mira el listado, verá que la mayoría del equipo ha estado aquí por tanto tiempo como yo, ¡algunos más! Las maestras son cercanas, y siento que las maestras tienen vínculos similares, con las familias, porque es un ministerio parroquial, nos dedicamos a ello y tratamos de desarrollar relaciones con las familias de la parroquia. El colegio es una familia.” La íntima comunidad, y antigüedad del equipo de nuestro preescolar son evidenciados por la permanencia de Patti Lavender, recientemente jubilada, luego de servir como maestra y directora de la Academia St. Michael más de 30 años. I know that 2021 will be a year of great interest in what will happen in the world around us, and new opportunities will abound. Wait for them. Look for them. Treasure them when they become known. While resolutions always seem to be good ideas, opportunities are often what God has chosen for us to experience so that our lives may be more whole and fulfilling. Can you think of a better way to start a new year than to forget the resolutions, and instead seize the opportunities God has waiting for us?

The Church gives us the season of Lent as an intentional opportunity to step back and make changes, where necessary. “We are bombarded — even in this isolation,” Tracy says. “To be able to step away and hear someone different can be refreshing and enlivening, energizing and renewing.” Tracy encourages fellow parishioners to make a priority of attending the mission and hopes that they will encourage others, whether parishioners or not, to take advantage of this opportunity to grow in faith. “Open your lives to the message of God and the salvation that awaits, as we go through the suffering, death and resurrection, to new life,” Tracy says.
