How fitting that a student so passionate about learning is now aspiring to teach the next generation of leaders. “I want to teach history at an urban high school,” says Kamilah Welch IT’08, “to help my students understand and critique systems, and then ignite a desire in them to fix the flaws they find.”

Kamilah credits her achievements at SYA as one of the reasons she was accepted to all 13 of the top U.S. colleges to which she applied. “The combination of classroom studies and educational travel heightened my passion for history and took my education to the next level.”

After graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. in Peace and Justice Studies from Wellesley College, Kamilah is currently earning her M. Ed. at Boston College where she is a Donovan Urban Teaching Scholar. She was also selected as 1 of 25 students nationwide to be the recipient of The Woodrow WilsonRockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color. “I’m being guided on a path to help other students achieve what I’ve achieved,” said Kamilah, “and so much more.”
