Welcome to Autumn 2017 issue of The Quill. That we should celebrate in the same issue both the launch of Our Shared Tomorrow: The Campaign for Pike and the generosity of our community evidenced in the Annual Report is fitting.

We would not be the school we are without the philanthropic investment of countless donors. We would also not be in a position to dream big—and Our Shared Tomorrow is indeed a bold vision—if we did not enjoy so strong a culture of philanthropy here.

Pike is an exceptional place for children (and for adults as well) to learn and grow, to become confident learners and engaged citizens. One reason is because we (and by “we,” I mean our students, teachers, staff, administration, board, parents, community members and donors) are always seeking ways to do what we do better. Over the last few years, we have successfully completed a school reaccreditation with all the invaluable self-reflection that that entails, a five-year strategic plan, and the implementation of: a new school-wide mathematics curriculum; a makerspace; a new schedule in the upper school; OUR SHARED [2] student-centered system of math, reading, TOMORROW aand literacy coaches; The Campaign for Pike a new administration-level Office of

Community Life; iPads in the classroom across the divisions; and a robust system of professional evaluation.

These are just a few examples. And we are, as of my writing this, finalizing a new five-year strategic plan that will carry us even further forward. As I am fond of noting, we are not resting on our laurels.

Pike is at the forefront of elementary education, not just in the Merrimack Valley or Massachusetts, but nationally. Our teachers are experienced, committed, and highly trained to engage their students exactly where they are and with exactly what they need.

Moreover, there is a culture of growth and curiosity among our faculty, early career teachers and veterans alike. Examples of this mindset are peppered throughout this edition of The Quill. Clearly, Teachers as Innovators, a key priority of the campaign, seeks to build on a strong foundation.

At Pike, whom a student learns with is of equal importance to whom a student learns from. Studies have consistently shown that a child’s peer group in the classroom is a key driver of learning. This fact has never been more crucial than now, when fully educating a child means equipping them with essential 21st century skills: collaboration, creativity, innovation, problem-solving, information literacy, cultural competency, and emotional awareness and intelligence. These outcomes only emerge within intentionally gathered classrooms, crafted through dynamic admissions, scholarship, and marketing programs. Pike Scholars, the second priority of Our Shared Tomorrow, affirms this imperative.

Finally, Our Shared Tomorrow positions the Annual Fund as a third priority. There are two clear reasons for this approach. First, Annual Fund dollars allow Pike to be exceptional on a daily basis. They provide for what can only be described as the margin of excellence that distinguishes a Pike education. Second, a robust Annual Fund will allow us to get to work immediately on the other two priorities. We can embark on new initiatives without waiting for the more deliberate but incredibly important work of endowment to provide funds to our operating budget. Through the Annual Fund, we make tomorrow’s Pike a reality today.

I hope you will delve into this issue of The Quill with enthusiasm and curiosity. And I hope you will come to appreciate the wide-ranging and important impact that this campaign specifically, and philanthropy in general, is having and will continue to have on Pike.

Then, I urge you to join your fellow community members as a supporter of this historic initiative.

Inspiring What Matters at Pike:

OUR SHARED TOMORROW CAMPAIGN When you envision the ideal academic setting, you probably picture a gleaming new library with an atrium and large windows, a performing arts center with stadium seating and a spacious stage, and an abundance of classrooms equipped with the latest computer hardware and software— all surrounded by idyllic, meticulously landscaped grounds.

It’s all so visual, so concrete: The bricks and mortar, the glass and greenery.

But when it comes to education, there’s much more to creating a vibrant and successful learning environment than a physical campus. As rags-to-riches billionaire businessman and philanthropist Clement Stone once put it: “Your most precious, valued possessions and your greatest powers are invisible and intangible.”

That, in a sense, is exactly the aim of Our Shared Tomorrow: The Campaign for Pike. The $7.55 million fundraising initiative isn’t focused on the place that is Pike so much as the people. It’s about the students and faculty, not the buildings they inhabit.

and 44 years as an educator inform his ideas on what ought to be a school’s priorities. “It’s not that I wouldn’t love to have those, too, but at the end of the day the strongest assets for Pike are our kids first and our faculty second. That mix is magic. It is at the heart of what we do.”

Inspired learning begins with inspired teaching

So just how will Our Shared Tomorrow help build a better future? It starts with the $2 million Teachers as Innovators fund. These are dollars that will expose teachers to what’s happening around the world in their fields of study—including the application of the latest advances in technology, brain science, and best practices—and how to incorporate that new knowledge directly into their students’ learning.

For proof of how that actually reaps rewards for Pike students, look no further than Spark, the new makerspace that encourages teachers and students throughout the school to take advantage of what can be learned and created through 3D printing, vinyl cutting, circuitry, and other hands-on approaches.

Spark grew directly out of the professional development experiences of a group of Pike educators, including

Because the effort was teacher-led and studentcentered, it focused on the learning outcomes that could be achieved in ways that the traditional classroom setup couldn’t deliver. It is emblematic of Pike’s overall approach.

“That was one of the best professional growth opportunities I’ve ever done,” Smith said, “and that’s probably one of the greatest things we’ve created at Pike so far.”

A partial list of projects that students have tackled in Spark makes it hard to argue with Smith’s assessment: Rigamajig large-scale building and programming KIBO robots in the Lower School; problem-based projects and invention design in the context of the Industrial Revolution in the Middle School; and, in the Upper School, the use of Upstander to create life-sized models of inspirational, historically significant people to foster important conversations.

With the makerspace up and running, the next step is exploring how every teacher can integrate this resource within their curriculum in ways that expand studentdirected learning, collaborative problem solving, and hands-on learning.

The end result of professional development opportunities isn’t always so dramatic, yet those opportunities can lead to meaningful classroom experiences. After attending a national conference on Texas Instruments TI-Nspire graphic calculator, Upper School math teacher Karen Latham P’13 ’15 returned to her classroom motivated and trained to teach coding and programming as part of her geometry lessons.

Three Generations at Pike

Timothy P. Horne ’51 P’75 ’95 GP’25 Asked to use one word to describe The Pike School, Tim Horne responded, “nurturing.” He should know— the Horne family has three generations of attendance at Pike.

Tim and his family have witnessed decades of change at Pike, from Balmoral Street to Sunset Rock Road. “My class was small and Mrs. [Cynthia] Pike was still teaching,” he recalled about entering the school in 1943.

Former president and CEO of Watts Water Technologies (1978-2002), where Tim remains director emeritus and consultant, he served as a both a board member and as chair of Pike’s board of trustees.

The Horne family legacy continued with daughters Tara Horne ’75 and Tiffany Horne Noonan ’95, and granddaughter Keira, who entered the first grade this fall.

“For nearly 40 years, Tim has lead the way,” said Head of School John “Muddy” Waters. “From tennis uniforms to computers to capital improvements, Pike is fortunate beyond measure to have Tim’s full support. When called upon, he steps up to the plate without hesitation.”

As Tim watches six-year-old Keira step headlong into first grade, he’s reminded of his daughters’ exceptional years at Pike. “In a sentimental sort of way, our children are still children during their years at Pike,” he said. “But once they graduate they are on to young adulthood and with these new freedoms we never see them quite the same.”

Tim continues giving back to Pike because he distinguishes the prominent place primary school plays in a child’s development and initial education. “I have favored Pike in my financial support more than my prep school and college,” he said. “A PreK-9 school such as Pike seldom receives the financial attention given to the higher education institutions. I believe it deserves more financial support.”

He bequeathed stock to the school, the first Pike alumnus to give specifically to the planned giving program.

Tim also recently made a significant gift to Our Shared Tomorrow: The Campaign for Pike, and was a lead donor for the middle school building, justly named the Horne Family Building.

“In the old days,” said Latham, “students approached concepts like coding as an end user. By giving them the tools to create their own coding, we open windows to understanding exactly how programming works, why it works the way it does, and how students can use those parameters to increase learning and understanding, even in fields far beyond math.”

“Getting quality professional development directly improves my instruction. If I improve my instruction, I improve how my kids learn,” said Smith, who’s taught at Pike for 10 years. “I want to provide the best for them and want them to come away knowing they got the best possible science education.” Smith isn’t alone.

“Our teachers have their students on their minds all of the time. We want to create dynamic, meaningful curricula for them every day,” said Waters. “We owe it to students and parents to invest in our teachers. One of our board members, Claudia Bach, regularly reflects on the level of ongoing education needed in most professional fields, like doctors, for example. She often says, ‘You wouldn’t want to go to a doctor who wasn’t up-to-date on his or her field. Well, the same applies to education.’”

Furthermore, there’s a direct link between teaching skills and displaying them. Michael Eatman P’27, Pike’s Director of Community Life explained, “We

talk a lot about the skills that students will really need for successful futures—innovation, cultural competency, problem-solving, for example—and we know that those skills really need to start with our teachers.

If they model the importance of these skills, then their students will stand a much better chance of internalizing and mastering them as well. Our teachers are lead innovators in a classroom of emerging innovators.”

“The only thing that stands in the way of more professional development opportunities is resources,” said Head of Upper School Colleen Welsh. “All our teachers benefit annually from professional development efforts. And the really good news is that they are eager for even more opportunities to engage in growing and learning. Pike has consistently used its professional development budget to the max.”

Not Just for Tech The conference wasn’t even over, and Hilary Munroe was already texting her kindergarten teammates at Pike about a new idea she felt would aid them in improving their students’ learning. “She was so excited,” recalled fellow teacher Kavita Mundra. “I hadn’t been to the conference, but I could tell Hilary was coming back armed with great materials to share.”

Share she did. Getting buy-in from the team was easy.

“The mindset is always about identifying new ideas that will improve what we do,” said Mundra. “It’s one of the things that I think is unique about Pike, that culture of learning and growing, even among the adults.” While more discussion and strategizing around the approach ensued, the team moved quickly to implement, test, and learn.

The end result—a way to assess student reading skills and identify immediate teaching strategies for improvement—has transformed the kindergarten approach to the core skills of reading and literacy.

“We’ve always been able to expand our students’ skills, but the speed and accuracy of our response now is really game-changing,” said Mundra. “We’re helping in the moment, giving kids the skills—and really, the confidence—to grow in leaps and bounds.”

Perhaps more than ever, professional development is vital for schools to adapt continually to and reflect the rapidly changing world that awaits students.

“Teaching has changed so much in the past few years,” said Smith. “For one thing, teaching skills is more essential than teaching content. Students have microcomputers at their fingertips all of the time, so the emphasis now is more focused on how to search for information, how to determine if it’s a reputable source, how to critically think about that information, how to communicate it, and how to problem-solve effectively using that information.”

The importance of peer groups

Education isn’t exclusively about the knowledge and skills teachers impart. Pike is also very tuned in to a number of studies—and its own experience—that show just how much students learn from each other.

“Twenty-first century skills demand that students learn from students. That’s really what great educators and educational institutions know,” explained Head of Middle School Marisa Schnirman P’16. “Collaboration, creativity, cultural competence, critical thinking—each one of these skills is really about how a person interacts with and plays off of those around them. These skills can’t be taught abstractly. You have to live and work with others directly to understand the challenges and solutions that hone those skills.”

“Think about how much time a child spends in the school,” added Head of Lower School Marybeth Heyd P’22. “Parents want to know their child is in a classroom that provides opportunities to learn and grow socially and emotionally as well as academically, and that’s one of the strengths of an independent school like Pike.

We provide the space and have the focus to turn everyday experiences into learning opportunities that matter in a child’s development.”

The Hyltons

Scott and Laurie P’17 ’20 From the start, Scott and Laurie Hylton have been impressed with The Pike School’s ability to address the different learning styles of their two daughters, Kathryn ’17 and Tyler ’20.

“With Katie, she can now talk in front of a crowd. It has been great to see her develop that confidence,” said Laurie.

Meanwhile, for younger daughter Tyler, Pike’s small classes have “given her the focus to develop self-confidence in her academic work,” said Scott.

The Hylton’s strong bonds with Pike inspired them to make a generous gift that led to Pike’s acquisition of their home at 36 Sunset Rock Road. The idea arose when the family decided to return to their native Newburyport after Katie’s matriculation to a college preparatory school.

“Our house is on the border of the school’s campus,” said Laurie, a Pike trustee. “We found ourselves able to do something special for the school, for future generations of students, and to show what Pike means to our family.”

“The opportunity to acquire 36 Sunset Rock Road is one Pike did not anticipate but was one we could not pass up,” said Head of School Muddy Waters. “Adjacent property doesn’t become available often and due to surrounding wetlands, Pike doesn’t have the option for any type of expansion of our building footprint without increasing the property boundaries. Had Scott and Laurie not stepped forward, the purchase of their home wouldn’t have been possible. Their generosity is inspiring; we’re very grateful.”

The Hylton’s point out that parents and others can make their own difference through support of the school’s Annual Fund.

This conviction is dyed into the fabric of Pike, from the classroom to the boardroom.

“It augments school operations,” said Laurie, “and enriches the curriculum.”

Pike Faculty Leading the Way Professional development isn’t just about Pike teachers learning. It’s also about them teaching what they’ve learned. Upper School science teacher and science department head Rob Smith, for example, has developed such a mastery of STEM instruction through Project Lead The Way (PLTW) and its conferences on robotics in education that he now trains other teachers at the organization’s national events. In fact, he’s the only certified elementary school-level PLTW trainer in New England.

Upper School math teacher Karen Latham has become a presenter on TI-Nspire, a role that takes her to national conferences to explain how she integrates the technology into her hands-on classes.

“Encouraging our teachers to take a leadership presence at industry conferences, in regional workshops, and as resources to other outside teachers makes our learning environment stronger and puts us on the leading edge,” said Colleen Welsh, Head of Upper School.

“Developing the Pike brand this way helps us attract really strong teacher candidates who have a growth mindset.”

The idea resonates, especially since trends show a shortage of qualified teachers.

“The hiring market for teachers is exceptionally competitive,” noted Welsh. “Having national stature means getting people’s attention. We have to plant our flag in the ground and let the world know we’re doing great things here.”

want students who are collaborative, self-aware, and equipped with more than just intellectual know-how.

Colleges and businesses want that, as well. We certainly seek it among our Trustees. We feel it is a hallmark of successful organizations and successful individuals— and of a well-educated Pike student.”

Joung likens the Pike classroom to NASA, known for bringing a diversity of talent into a room to solve a problem.

What else can Pike do to better prepare students to not only lead successful careers but also become responsible citizens and fulfilled individuals?

One crucial way is to focus on “enrollment management,” a term that in essence means crafting classrooms with the understanding that the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts. Identifying the

mix of students that best fosters learning for everyone in the classroom is at the heart of the process.

“If we want classrooms that foster these skills we’ve been talking about, then we need to be deliberate in our approach to admissions, marketing, and enrollment,” said Waters. “And, in order to be deliberate, Pike needs the flexibility that strong institutional finances bring.”

Put another way, sometimes the perfect student for a particular classroom comes from a family that can afford full tuition; many times, they don’t. And that’s a rub for the admissions office.

“Pike has an extensive wait list of great kids who have a lot to offer to Pike and our students,” said Director of Admission Kelly Baker. “You always wish for more resources, but never have enough to cover all of the great kids who could join the community.”

That’s a lost opportunity that has given rise to the Pike Scholars Fund, an initiative to raise $3 million to make it easier to enroll remarkable students with demonstrable financial need.

Learning Is No Secret “Yes!” That’s the answer Literacy Coach Sharon Libront gives when asked if her students know when she’s implementing the ideas and practices that evolve out of her professional development work.

“I let them know when I’m trying new things, or when we’re testing to see if something will work,” said Libront. “It’s important to show them that learning is a lifelong pursuit, that even as an adult, I don’t have all the answers.”

Libront has pursued learning adventures in places like India and Thailand, become certified as a Yoga4Classrooms instructor, and broadened her credentials as a literacy coach. For Libront, learning and teaching go hand in hand.

“I love bringing new ideas and approaches to my work with students and my peers. It’s what drives my teaching and their learning,” she said. “How can I present this topic more effectively? How can they dig deeper into that topic? It’s exciting, and I think it makes learning more exciting for my students.”

Head of Lower School Marybeth Heyd agrees.

“It sends them a really clear message about the importance of learning. We say it in our mission statement, so we need to live it as teachers. Learning doesn’t stop just because you’re an adult. Learning happens all the time, and, at Pike at least, it’s fun.”

Inspiring What Matters at Pike:

OUR SHARED TOMORROW CAMPAIGN continued “The more money and flexibility we have dedicated in the budget when we go through the admissions process, the easier it is to enroll the group of students we feel are the strongest fit for Pike and for the individual classrooms we are enrolling,” said Rod Boyer, Director of Advancement. “In that process, we need to ensure that the ability to pay never becomes the sole determinant of who’s coming to our school.”

Waters agrees. “That doesn’t serve our current students and families or our mission, even if it were to help our bottom line. And the unfortunate truth is, it’s a reality for many independent schools,” he said.

Pike Board Chair Firdaus Bhathena P’12 ’15 ’18 said, “When you understand that gathering the strongest possible set of kids into the classroom benefits the learning of every child—your child —you understand why this is such an important investment to make as a community.”

Creating future impact now

The final piece of the Our Shared Tomorrow campaign focuses on immediate impact and having the resources to engage in the other two priorities in real time through the school’s operating budget. The campaign envisions a three-year goal of raising $2.55 million through the Annual Fund.

“This initiative will invest in short- to long-term projects through the school’s endowment,” explained Will Powers, Director of Finance and Operations. “If we just raised endowment dollars, we would need to wait for those funds to grow and spin off funds that we can then spend.”

“If you think about annual giving as the school’s checking account, and the endowment as our savings, then you begin to get a clearer picture of the difference,” explained Boyer. “We can’t lose sight of annual giving as we seek to build our endowment. You wouldn’t say, ‘Well, I’ll just not eat this year and then I’ll have lots of money stored in savings next year.’”

Foregoing the Annual Fund would essentially put Pike in that same scenario, and keep the school from implementing new approaches and initiatives as the need arises. There has to be a balance.

“The emphasis on Annual Fund ensures that if a teacher has an idea that will improve the learning of students sitting in class right now, we can support that teacher right now,” said Heyd. “We won’t have to say, ‘Wait until next year,’ and we won’t have to rob Peter to pay Paul.”

Furthermore, Pike accomplishes a great deal every year through strong investment in the Annual Fund. A few examples include the aforementioned makerspace, the introduction of a global art exchange in the kindergarten, the hosting of guest writers and artists, new robotics kits, additional library resources, and playground equipment.

Strengthening Our Learning Community

“We rely on those funds to differentiate a good education from an exceptional one,” said Pati Fernández, Director of the Annual Fund. “Annual dollars create the margin of excellence that parents are ultimately investing in for their children.”

Without those funds, alternatives would include rising tuition bills or a sizeable increase in students.

“Pike isn’t like businesses where financial growth and stability are a matter of selling more products or services,” said Fernández. “Our parents don’t want that, our students wouldn’t benefit from that, and frankly Pike would no longer be Pike if we were to follow that strategy.”

In short, philanthropy is crucial, annually and over a longer horizon, to keep Pike vibrant and viable.

“All the things that our community loves about Pike— the talented and committed faculty, the art spaces and theater, the classrooms and fields, just to name a few— are all the outcomes of generous philanthropy,” said Waters.

“My husband and I feel very grateful for the Pike experience for our children,” Joung said. “We’re only able to experience the Pike of today because of the Pike parents and alumni of the past. It’s important that not only our children benefit, but that future generations benefit, as well. That’s why we’ve always supported the school’s annual giving drive and why we’ve made an additional investment in response to the vision laid out in Our Shared Tomorrow.”

Ask Director of Admission Kelly Baker what her favorite day of the year is, and she doesn’t hesitate. It’s the first day of school.

“It’s so rewarding to see our newest students join the community for the first time. You can recognize how they will grow here, and also how they will uniquely contribute to the community,” said Baker.

We know from community learning here at Pike that teachers of course make a huge impact on learning, and students are also learning a great deal from their peers.

It’s a reality that might not immediately be clear to, or readily appreciated by, an outside observer.

This deeper understanding of the importance of peer-to-peer interactions necessitates an exhaustive admissions process.

“We’re being deliberate. We’re being intentional,” added Baker. “We know our current classrooms are incredibly rich and vibrant, and we want to see those same qualities in our applicant pool.”

“It’s exciting to imagine the possibilities, and it will be even more exciting to realize them through this campaign,” said Waters. “We’re investing in students and in teachers, and I’ve always said they are the heart of Pike.”

That’s why the Pike Scholars program is so important.

When the school is looking at really strong, qualified applicants, it doesn’t make sense to make the ability to pay the only criterion for acceptance.

Our Shared Tomorrow keeps them squarely in the center, because, in the end, it’s not about dollars and cents, but about the students and teachers who will benefit.

“We would cut ourselves off from so many exceptional students who would significantly strengthen what happens here at Pike for their peers, and for our overall community,” said Baker.

“People who recognize the value this school has delivered to their own learning, or has brought to the lives of their child or grandchild, will understand how crucial and worthy of philanthropic investment this effort is.”

To Baker, the effectiveness of this recipe–and each student’s potential to impact Pike–is clear on every first day of school.

Prior to joining the Board, Stephen Andrews served on the Swing into Spring committee and, along with his wife Lisa, volunteered for many special events while their daughter was a student at Pike.

A multi-sport enthusiast and competitive-level Scrabble player, Edmund Aziabor joined Pike’s Board to use his 15 years of financial and business consulting experiences and skills to help advance the ideals of the school, and to assist with the school’s finance, audit, and advancement committees.

“Pike is a positive, essential part of my educational background and that of my daughter Jessica,” said Andrews. “Over the years, Pike has done a remarkable job of evolving while preserving its core values. I chose to join the Board as I want to be part of the team that will guide Pike into the next generation.”

Andrews has been an airline pilot for 34 years, and currently flies Delta Airlines international flights. He enjoys playing tennis, sailing, and playing the piano, and has coached youth hockey for five years.

“My wife Yvonne and I are grateful for the experiences our three children are having at Pike, and are dedicated to helping the school in any way we can,” said Aziabor. “We’re committed to giving our time and to contributing financially as an investment in highly qualified teachers and updated technology to attract a diverse and strong student body.”

After working with several Pike trustees and administrators as part of the Strategic Planning Committee, Jeannie Sullivan accepted the invitation to join the Board to have a hand in the implementation of the five-year Strategic Plan.

“Watching Pike evolve, improve and innovate during the next five years while our children are still students here is a great opportunity to observe firsthand the critical impact of philanthropy,” said Sullivan. “My husband Kevin and I could not be happier with our decision to educate our children at Pike. A Pike education is rich with values and immeasurable opportunity to grow in so many ways.”

Prior to taking time off to raise her children, Sullivan’s professional career included marketing, communications, business development, operations, and project management work for start-ups in Boston and Pennsylvania.

Lauren Nigro LS Reading Specialist Lauren Nigro earned her B.A. in Psychology from Mount Holyoke College before getting a law degree from Boston College. After several years of practicing law, Nigro decided to change careers and earned a certificate in early childhood education from Salem State University and her M.Ed. in Language and Literacy from Simmons College. Nigro is a licensed reading specialist and has also been certified in Orton-Gillingham at The Carroll School. Most recently, she has been a language-based teacher for the second and third grades at the Coffin School in Marblehead.

Lauri Pérez joins the language Marc Surprenant received his department to teach Spanish after associate degree in Culinary Arts teaching at Pingree School for four from Newbury College. He was a years. Pike’s Annual Very Important Person Day. Our family and friends enjoyed spending time in the classrooms, watching performances in the Dahod Theater, and experience a “day in the life” with their very important students.

Dear Friends, I’m pleased to share with you Pike’s 2016-2017 Annual Report. It’s been an extraordinary year, a true reflection of Pike teamwork and community support.

Teamwork comes in many forms at Pike. As we celebrate the successes of our 2016-2017 year, I want to highlight a group and a person who’ve had a big impact on those successes. First, many thanks go out to our Capital Campaign Cabinet, the seven tireless trustees who worked behind the scenes to raise more than $3.4 million for endowment during the past two years. Thanks to their efforts, we’re in a position to publicly launch Our Shared Tomorrow. I’d also like to thank our new Annual Fund Director, Pati Fernández, whose energy has helped her engage so many community members in conversations about philanthropic support and whose creativity has led to a slate of events and gatherings that highlight community and the impact of philanthropy. She makes a strong team even stronger.

As you review the Annual Report that follows, and read the information about Our Shared Tomorrow at the beginning of The Quill, there is a danger of seeing both as mere conglomerations of numbers. I urge you to look deeper to see what these two truly represent: a generous and lasting investment in students and teachers, the heart of Pike.

The Sandoval Family Elizabeth, Hugo, Juan ’23, Fernando ’22, and Gabriela

For Pike parents Elizabeth Arebelo and Hugo Sandoval, their pivotal moment came with news of their son Fernando’s test results. “He was ahead in his class in reading and several other skills,” explained Hugo.

But with few available options, the Sandovals were at a loss on how to nurture Fernando’s advanced abilities.

The answer came from the Lawrence YMCA staff. “We were told about The Pike School and how, every year, they awarded scholarships to academically capable students from the Merrimack Valley,” said Hugo.

Fernando ’21 arrived at Pike in 2012 and has since been joined by his brother, Juan ’22, who is entering fourth grade.

It didn’t take long for the Sandovals to witness Pike’s distinctiveness.

“It comes down to the fact that Pike prepares students to succeed,” said Hugo.

The results have been impressive. Both Fernando and Juan have thrived in Pike’s environment of small class size, a well-informed and nurturing faculty, and modern classroom technology.

The Sandovals are certain that the Annual Fund has played a key role in their sons’ academic achievements. “The Annual Fund ensures our teachers are learning new skills so that they are actually innovators in their classrooms. This enhances the learning process for all Pike students,” said Hugo.

For this reason, the Sandovals not only give to the Annual Fund, but they encourage others to do the same.

“Participation of all parents strengthens our school and builds a stronger community that benefits all of our children, the teachers and staff,” said Elizabeth.

“Making a gift to the Annual Fund is another way to be part of this special community, supporting the quality and opportunity that is a Pike education.”

The Francomano Family Ken, Arleen and Eva ’21

Ken and Arleen Francomano clearly recall the moment when they were convinced about their decision to have daughter Eva ’21 attend The Pike School.

“It was the third day of her first week at Pike,” said Ken. “Eva said, ‘I want to get there by 7:30 so I can hang with my friends.’”

“Eva is a naturally shy person, so we were relieved,” Ken said. “Her words gave us a feeling that she was going to fit in and thrive at Pike.”

With Eva in her second year at Pike, Ken and Arleen’s hopes have been further confirmed for their daughter.

“We’ve seen her stand up before a roomful of parents, make eye contact with everyone in the room, and speak with confidence,” said Ken. “Thanks to Pike, she has just naturally blossomed.”

Their daughter’s progress has encouraged Ken and Arleen to get more involved at Pike, including their participation in the Parents Association, volunteering for events such as the Swing Into Spring golf tournament, and their support for the Annual Fund.

“It directly helps the kids,” said Arleen about the Annual Fund, which supports curriculum enhancements, improved classroom technology, additional extracurricular activities, and professional development.

It also enables qualified children of all socioeconomic backgrounds to attend Pike.

But for the fund to be effective, it takes the entire Pike community.

“Every dollar, every gift helps,” Ken said. “Participation at every level of giving is so important.”

“It’s whatever you can do for the teachers and the students to keep a great institution thriving and constantly improving,” Arleen agreed.

The Jerez Family

Julissa, Daniel, Bianca ’22 and Ari ’25 Julissa and Daniel Perez were frustrated. They had yet to find a pre-school matching the quality of their daughter Bianca’s home day care. Then they discovered The Pike School.

“We were thrilled to find a place with strong academics practically in our backyard,” said Julissa. An enthusiastic learner, Bianca ’22 has thrived at Pike.

“We were impressed that kids were having fun learning, something that Bianca really responded to,” said Daniel. “It exceeded our expectations.”

Now in the fifth grade, Bianca has been joined at Pike by her brother, Ari ’25, a second grader.

Responding to their children’s rich scholastic experiences, Julissa and Daniel are active parent volunteers. Julissa has served as a classroom parent and field trip chaperone. Both parents have volunteered at school dances and the Halloween Social.

“The opportunity for parent involvement has been huge for us,” said Julissa.

“It helps us feel closer to this school community.”

Support of the Annual Fund has further strengthened the Perez family’s ties to The Pike School.

“It benefits all students,” said Daniel. “Because the Annual Fund is unrestricted, it provides support where needed, such as expanding extracurricular activities— anything from rock climbing to cooking.”

The Perez family encourages other families to support the Annual Fund because of the value it creates.

“Every gift counts. Every gift helps. It’s not only about the amount; it’s about strength in numbers and consistency,” said Julissa. “It is about actually giving to the Annual Fund and sharing that responsibility with fellow parents that matters.

“It is a direct connection to the quality learning at Pike for all the students,” said Daniel.
