Cathedral Chimes Celebrating 97 years of Lasallian educational excellence SPRING 2022

C AT H E D R A L RO B OT I C S 2022 New Heights

In the 2019-2020 school year, our inaugural year, Cathedral High School’s Robotics Team rose to the challenge and qualified for the National Championship. Our rookie team #8006 won two awards at the Del Mar Regional Competition. After months of planning and hard work, our boys took the Highest Ranked Rookie Award and the Rookie All Star Award. The latter extended our season allowing us to participate at the next level, the “First National Championship’’ event. Unfortunately, as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, our students were unable to attend.

During the COVID year 2020-2021 the program competed in virtual competitions and the team continued to learn and grow. In just our third year of existence, the Phantoms returned to the San Diego Regional Championship with our robot, “The Phantom Menace” and WON first place out of 50 teams, capturing the Regional Championship trophy. It is a proud moment for our Robotics team and the Cathedral High School family. Special thanks to the team Lead Mentor Gabriel Galaz ’20, our student participants and the support crew of alumni: Anthony Trafecanty ’80, Norman Zelada, ’14, Brother Rafael Rodriguez FSC ’13, and David Galaz ’85.

L E T T E R from the President

Dear Friends of Cathedral High School, I am pleased to present this edition of the Cathedral Chimes that shares with you some of the wonderful events and accomplishments of our students for their first full year back in person on campus. Your investment and support have allowed us to continue our rich school history. As our students get ready for their graduation this May to be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown LA, I am proud that 80% of them have been accepted by a four-year university. I want to thank all of you for increasing your support to assist our families during these past two difficult years. I’m proud that the faculty, administration and staff have worked so hard to make sure that our students have readjusted to being back in person on the campus once again. During the last three years we have built the new Phantom Theater and the Visual Performing Arts Building. Our Robotics team, “The Phantom Menace” which was on the First Robotic Competition winning team was started two years ago and is located in our new Innovation Lab in our new classroom building. We have now replaced/improved most of the campus and are in a great position to meet the needs of the whole Los Angeles community. We serve and will continue to serve young men from our traditional parishes and neighborhoods where I and many others of us grew up. These are some of the oldest and poorest areas of the city and Cathedral continues to do its best work with students from these neighborhoods. Students are also traveling from the San Gabriel Valley, Hollywood, Culver City, Pasadena and Glendale areas to benefit from what Cathedral has to offer. We are one of the few private or Catholic schools that I’m aware of in the country that serves such a diverse economic mixture of families. We have a significant number of lower income families and a significant number of middle-income families within our school community. This speaks volumes about the kind of atmosphere and community of brotherhood at Cathedral that has been created to achieve this environment. Although we have a healthy freshman class of 155 and a total student body today of 600, the economic conditions of our state and country because of the effects that Covid-19 have continued to adversely impact our families. We had to increase our financial aid budget to $4,100,000 this year from $3,800,000 for the prior year. This has been done because of our commitment to offer a quality religious and academic education to any qualified student willing to work regardless of his family economic situation. In my thirty-one years at Cathedral, I have never been as impressed as I am today about the work of our students, Brothers, faculty and staff. I ask and encourage you to continue to invest generously in the education of the students of Cathedral High School.

L E T T E R from the Principal

Dear Friends, Adaptability. Resilience. Vigilance. These words depict our approach to engaging and challenging students throughout the 20212022 school year as they returned to daily in-person instruction on our beloved campus. While the pandemic certainly affected everyone it has also made us more intentional about the core values we want students to learn and demonstrate during their formative high school years in our Lasallian Catholic high school. While learning loss and the effects of healthy social engagement were evident when school began in the fall of 2021, significant gains have been made throughout the school year bringing renewed personal, academic and athletic success for many Phantoms. We are fortunate to have a dedicated and stable faculty, with low turnover, that has facilitated significant gains in learning and social enrichment for most students. We are pleased to have 130 young men graduate in our Class of 2022 with over 98% continuing in college, and nearly 80% gaining admission to our four-year college of university. This year we were proud to welcome our first cohort of 12 freshmen who qualified as Onward Scholars and receive 75% of their tuition funding from the Smet Foundation. In March 2022 we registered another cohort of 12 freshmen for the 2022-2023 school year. By year four, we will enroll 48 students (12 per grade level) in our Onwards Scholars Program providing over $432,000 in direct tuition support to academically talented students enrolled at Cathedral. With our highly regarded new Robotics program, competitive eSports gaming teams, and proven KCHS Broadcasting Television Studio and Innovation Lab, more students than ever are pursuing new tech and engineering majors at universities throughout the United States. As part of Catheral’s Sustainability Campaign we will be remodeling the Senior Building to provide space for a new cafeteria dining area, new kitchen facility, college and personal counseling offices, meeting room and faculty room. Many Phantoms will also enjoy the new FieldTurf and track that will be replaced during the summer and ready for fall football and soccer competition. As a leading Catholic high school in our Los Angeles Archdiocese, Cathedral is and will always be a school that helps those in need and with your support we can help both current and future Phantoms achieve their personal, academic and athletic potential. In Christ the Teacher, B ROT H ER J OH N M O NTGO ME RY, FSC , PRINC IPA L

L E T T E R from the Vice President

Dear Cathedral Community, As we prepare for graduation season and members of our Class of 2022 prepare to walk across the stage, I am reminded of the unique challenges our students and community have faced the past few years. In the midst of it all, I am so proud of our community and the resiliency it has demonstrated. Our students continue to prove a Cathedral Phantom education is an advantage for life, rooted in Lasallian values, intellect, community, and service to others. Through collaborations and with support of foundations, alumni, donors, and friends, Cathedral High School has put into action its mission of a quality Catholic education. During these unprecedented times, our students continue to achieve great heights. Our fall theater production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” was outstanding, our Robotics team won the San Diego Regional title, our Cross Country placed 2nd in our division and reached the CIF State Finals, and our Soccer team won its 13th consecutive Del Rey League title. We are also excited to see that our seniors are receiving their college acceptance letters and we look forward to the baccalaureate mass and commencement ceremony. Although Cathedral continues to enhance the student experience and learning opportunities for our students, Cathedral needs your support. The current reality is that Catholic education is facing significant challenges and the pandemic has vastly increased these challenges. In the last two years, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has closed eight Catholic elementary schools, six of which were feeder schools to Cathedral High School. With your support, we can navigate through the uncertain times and continue providing the quality Catholic education our students have come to expect. We welcome the opportunity to talk with you about how you can help us continue Cathedral’s traditions and accomplishments. I encourage you to support our students and our Lasallian traditions. I am thankful for your continued support of Cathedral High School. God bless, A RTU RO LOP EZ , ‘93, VIC E PRE SIDE NT

G O L D E N D I P LO M A Celebrating the Classes . 1970 & 1971

In keeping with our annual traditions, Cathedral celebrated our graduates from two classes, the Class of 1970 and 1971 by awarding them their 50 Year Golden Diplomas! The festivities took place on Thursday, October 14th on our Bolzano Family Field where we gathered for a prayer service with our student body and alumni celebrants. Cathedral is blessed to have a great tradition and this yearly Golden Diploma ceremony continues this heritage by connecting our current students with our graduates from the past. The Class of 1970 took this occasion to recognize class member Melvin Henderson-Rubio for his tremendous generosity to his Alma Mater. The prayer service included the students giving a vigorous rendition of the hymn “Stand Up Oh Men of God” and we concluded the ceremony with a spirited singing of the Cathedral Alma Mater. The day ended with a nice luncheon in the MHR conference room. Congratulations to the classes of 1970 and 1971 on their achievement!

C OV I D - 19 R E S P O N S E Phantom Perseverance The unprecedented times that we have all experienced presented a challenge for the Cathedral High School Community. Through the support of our Alumni, Foundation Partners, Friends, and our Christian Brothers San Francisco-New Orleans District we provided a quality Catholic education for our students during the 2020-2021 academic school year. To our partners, you will be happy to know that no student was dismissed for financial reasons. We were able to retain our enrollment of over 600 students and graduated a class of 175 seniors. The greatest need for Cathedral High School families during the pandemic was for additional tuition assistance. Over 90% of the student body receives need-based tuition grants and/or academic scholarships. Additionally, to support our families with the ongoing effects of the pandemic, we did not increase our tuition for the 2021-2022 school year. During the 2020-2021 school year, Cathedral was able to provide instruction through a distant learning platform. After Easter Vacation in April 2021 students were able resume in-person instruction in a hybrid format, 2 days a week. On campus instruction was eventually expanded to 4 days a week for those who chose to attend classes in person. The 2021-2022 school year brought a new hope, as we returned to our traditional school schedule and back to in-person learning. There has been a collaborative effort between the administrators, faculty, students and families to make this year a success. We have returned to our traditions, such as athletics, our play productions, Honor Roll Assembly, Golden Diploma Ceremony for the Classes of 1970 and 1971 and masses to name a few. We have made adjustments, such as hosting our events outdoors, wearing mask and weekly COVID testing. We at Cathedral High School are very grateful to our Students, Families, Teachers, Administrators, Staff, Alumni, Foundation Partners, and our Christian Brothers LaSallian District for assisting us in persevering through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The students of Cathedral High School are in great need of a quality Catholic, college preparatory education and everyone’s collaboration has been key in our effort to achieve our mission to our Cathedral students.

P H A N TO M T H E AT E R You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown . The Broadway Musical

Welcome back to live theatre at Cathedral High School. After a year and a half away from our beautiful new theater, our fall production of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”, was held over 4 days in November 2021. The excitement of returning to the stage was evident, and at the final dress rehearsals it was an unbelievable joy to see their shining faces. On behalf of the Administration, entire Charlie Brown creative team and the cast and crew, we were thrilled to have performed our show. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was watching this talented and dedicated group of teenagers show up to every rehearsal over a period of two months to bring this show to life. The final song in this delightful musical based on the timeless comic strip “Peanuts” created by Charlie M. Schulz, it was called Happiness. The lyrics in the song reminds all of us to open our hearts and minds to the countless blessings where happiness can be found in our lives! We hope you enjoyed the show!

P H A N TO M S P OT L I G H T Isaiah Jewett ‘15

Isaiah Jewett ran into the hearts and minds of Americans and people around the world as a participant in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. A Cathedral graduate from the Class of 2015, Isaiah showed the world the definition of great sportsmanship. After his graduation from Cathedral High School, he attended UC Irvine on a Track and Field scholarship. In 2017, he had a strong sophomore campaign in the 800 meters and established himself a strong competitor for the Big West Conference. As a junior, Isaiah transferred to USC to pursue academic opportunities and goals, focused on social change and animation. Additionally, he wanted to pursue championships and Isaiah felt USC gave him the strongest opportunities. After a slow start in the 2016 track season, Isaiah pushed himself and had a goal to compete in the Nationals. Isaiah continued to chase his goals and in 2021, he won the NCAA 800 meters championship. In the summer of 2021, Isaiah competed in the track and field U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He made the U.S. Olympic Team by breaking his school record and taking second in the men’s 800 meters final. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the world got to know Isaiah through an act of great sportsmanship. As Isaiah ran the final curb in the 800 meters, he and Nijel Amos from Botswana collapsed on the track. The two competitors running to advance to the Olympic finals, tripped each other and both competitors collapsed on the track. In that moment, Isaiah got back up, helped Amos to his feet and the two finished the race together. Isaiah credits his great act of sportsmanship in the lessons he learned from his mother, stepmom, and sisters. He is cognizant of all the time and commitment they put into raising him and how much strength they demonstrated through challenging times. He also credits his coaches for the positive outlook and constant support. Isaiah demonstrated to the world what type of person he is and set a great example to all young athletes.

2 2 N D A N N UA L S C H O L A R S H I P WA L K - A - T H O N Every Step Counts!

Our 22nd Annual Scholarship Walk-A-Thon, Every Step Counts, was a significant success. After a two year in-person absence, it was exciting to walk as a Cathedral community once again! We raised over $50k in support of Cathedral’s scholarship program. Our students, faculty and friends rallied around the event as we walked around our Elysian Park trail. We followed our walk with burgers from In-N-Out, once we returned to campus. The walk took place on March 16th and it was a beautiful sunny morning. There was a high level of excitement amongst our students as we resumed this tradition. The event helped bring the Cathedral community closer. Through our collective efforts, we supported each other and the mission of St. John Baptist de la Salle. A special thank you to all of our students, faculty, administrators, families, sponsors and supporters of Cathedral High School! Go Phantoms!

Louis E. Nevarez ‘68 S EP TEM BER 14, 1950 – NOVE MBE R 30, 202 1

The Cathedral High School community is saddened by the passing of Lou Nevarez. He was a driving force for Cathedral High School. A beloved member of the Cathedral High School community, Lou Nevarez shared his gifts whole heartedly through the Alumni Association and his efforts on behalf of the Annual Scholarship Dinner. He also served two terms on the Cathedral High School Board of Trustees. Lou Nevarez was raised in Boyle Heights and attended the local Catholic schools, Assumption Elementary School and Cathedral High School. He graduated from Cathedral in 1968. While at Cathedral he participated in athletics and on campus clubs. Many of his classmates became lifelong friends. His relationships with Assumption and Cathedral continued way beyond his graduation. He helped raise over $5,000,000 for students and Catholic education. Lou leaves behind his partner in life, his beloved wife Petra, their sons Alonzo and Armando and son-in-law Chris and daughter-in-law Tawny. Lou and Petra were a team and together supported each other and encouraged each other’s love for helping others. Both were Phantom for Life recipients and embodied the principles of serving others. Lou loved his family and encouraged his nephews to attend Cathedral, and many of them did. Lou was very passionate, and he demonstrated this in his love for his family, friends, Cathedral High School, Assumption, UCLA, USC, Lakers, Rams and the Dodgers. His impact will forever be felt through the campus and the lives of the students that benefited from his philanthropic efforts. In honor of Lou Nevarez, consider donating to the Lou Nevarez ‘68 Scholarship Fund, benefiting the students of Cathedral High School.

SOCCER The Cathedral High School soccer season began with many unknowns. A young roster, a challenging schedule and the COVID restrictions. The Phantoms faced a challenging schedule, amongst the top schedules in the state. The Phantoms learned and grew throughout the season. Victories over Loyola, St. Francis, De La Salle (Concord), Salesian and St. Paul’s (Louisiana), helped the team gain confidence.

C RO S S C O U N T RY 2 021- 2 0 2 2 CIF RUNNE R-UP LE AGUE C HAM P ION S !

Success does not come easy, yet Phantom Cross Country continues to thrive year after year. The Cross Country team had another successful season, led by a youthful group of runners. Their commitment showed during their dominant league campaign against Bishop Amat, Bishop Montgomery, La Salle and Don Bosco Tech where the team won all three league meets. The Phantoms earned the Del Rey League championship for the 11th season in 12 years. Although the Cross Country team had a lot of youth, the boys showed great determination and were eager to prove they had improved throughout the season. The team reached the CIF-SS Division 4 Finals and earned RunnerUp honors. The great showing in the CIF-SS Finals, had the team hopeful of another CIF State Championship. The boys ran exceptionally well in the CIF State Finals and placed in 4th amongst all the Division 4 schools in the state. Next season looks promising for the Phantoms as they continue with their year-round training. The team is led by Sophomores Emmanuel Perez who earned All-CIF and All-State honors, as well as Emmanuel Hernandez who earned All-CIF honors. The Phantoms will be in pursuit of another league and CIF championship.

The league season provided the Phantoms the opportunity to demonstrate their might. As the defending league champions, the team looked to continue their winning ways. The Phantoms faced off with league opponents and earned victories over Bishop Amat, Bishop Montgomery, Salesian and St. Genevieve. As the team compiled the victories, the commitment was evident! The team took great pride in representing the Cathedral Community! The Phantoms claimed the 13th consecutive Del Rey League Championship. A big accomplishment for the Cathedral Phantoms High School team. As the season came to an end in the CIF-SS playoffs, the team was very appreciative of the opportunity to play a high school season. The 2021-2022 soccer program will be remembered for their love of soccer and representing Cathedral High School. The program which consists of a Varsity, JV and FS teams had tremendous success. The boys performed at an extremely high level and are proud to have represented Cathedral High School.

F O OT B A L L The 2021 Phantom Football season was one of new experiences. The team dealt with COVID-19 protocols, and a youthful roster. All these elements provided new and unforeseen challenges. In our second year in the highly competitive Mission League, the team struggled to gain traction on offense. The defense was the strength of the team and looks to be the foundation for the upcoming season. The Phantoms are hard at work using the spring season to improve on the team chemistry and fitness. The Phantoms look forward to improving on last season’s record and will build around the experience gained during the past year. The team returns numerous starters on the offense and defense. This fall the football team will be competing in the Angelus League, so mark your calendars as we play: St. Francis, Loyola, St. Paul, Crespi and Paraclete.

Dear Cathedral Community We have exciting news! As you know, Cathedral High School has remained steadfast and committed to the education of young men, especially those from economically disadvantaged families in the Los Angeles area for nearly 100 years. It is our responsibility to guarantee this commitment for those who walk the campus today and for those future generations of Cathedral students. To do this, we have launched a $10,000,000 Sustainability Campaign. This campaign will increase organizational capacity, enhance our campus facilities, and preserve Catholic education through the alleviation of financial barriers that 90% of our students face. We are committed to accomplishing this goal through the following three initiatives.

I N I T I ATIVE ON E: Increasing Cathedral’s Organizational Capacity

• Continue to strategically enhance our enrollment strategies • Create a sustainable fundraising model

I N I T I ATIVE TWO: Enriching our Educational Environment

• Campus upgrades, for today and the future. • Technology enhancements, to help our students remain current with access to updated technology.

I N I T I ATIVE TH REE: Preserving Catholic Education through Scholarship and Organizational Health for the next 100 years!

• Grow our endowment and Annual Scholarship Fund.

With these initiatives our goal is to preserve and enhance the Cathedral experience for our present and future students so that young men can continue to depend on the stability of their education and the Cathedral community.

Cathedral High School celebrated its 23rd Annual Scholarship Dinner on Friday, November 20, 2020. This annual event was a historical event for many reasons! It was hosted in a virtual format; it was live from our very own broadcasting studio. Our KCHS Los Angeles produced the show and streamed the virtual dinner. Although this 2020 fundraising social celebration was provided in a different format due to COVID-19 pandemic, on this night we honored our very own Brother James Meegan, FSC, ’61 for his commitment to the Christian Brothers and the students at Cathedral High School. Brother James Meegan grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1961. He attended St. Mary’s College and returned to Los Angeles after graduation in 1965 to study for a Master’s Degree at Cal State LA. He joined the faculty of Cathedral High School in September 1966. In August,1970 Mr. Meegan left Cathedral for the Christian Brothers Novitiate. He returned to Cathedral in August 1971 as Brother James and served the school as teacher, college counselor, vice-principal, and principal until the summer of 1985. He returned to Cathedral in July 1997 and served as president until August 2003 when he returned to the classroom and director of the Brothers Community until June 2005. In July 2018, Brother James formally retired. And now as a volunteer teaches an elective seminar in The Great Books, he continues to write grants for Cathedral and helps edit publications. This is Brother James’s 43rd year on the faculty/administration of Cathedral High School. We recognize the determination of Brother James, a great example for our students. During his tenure he helped Cathedral High School remain open and in the late 1990’s to transition to the current Principal-President model. He has served the Cathedral community for over 40 years in numerous capacities, his support for Cathedral has never wavered. In the summer of 2020, Brother James celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a Christian Brother! The school community thanks Brother James for his continued commitment to Cathedral High School and the Christian Brothers. The 23rd Annual Scholarship Dinner was a great success. Cathedral and its students appreciate the support of all its corporate partners, surrounding business community, alumni, and individual sponsors.

On Friday, December 3, 2021, Cathedral High School returned to an in-person scholarship dinner. It was a wonderful evening, celebrated outdoors at The Terrace at LA Live. The Scholarship Dinner continues to grow with the support of our great friends alumni, and corporate sponsors. Funds raised from this event help provide scholarships for committed students from predominantly low-income working families. Our Councilmember Gil Cedillo, got the evening started with some words of support and certificates for our honorees. On this night we honored our Principal Brother John Montgomery, FSC and Martin Farfan, CHS President, with the Cathedral Tradition Award. As a Principal-President partnership they have worked together for 25 years. Their efforts have helped Cathedral High School increase enrollment, increase course offerings and build over $40M in campus additions. They are truly enduring in their commitment to the students of Cathedral High School. We also were very fortunate to have been able to acknowledge and honor Cynthia Farfan with the Phantom for Life Award. Cynthia Farfan is a most deserving Phantom for Life recipient.

Her contributions of time, resources and support for the students of Cathedral High School and Catholic education have been ongoing for many years. Cynthia has been a unwavering partner to Martin and has supported his efforts at Cathedral High School. Additionally, we celebrated the determination of Isaiah Jewett ’15. We presented him with the Spirit of Cathedral award. His story of great sportsmanship and perseverance were on display at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His hard work and dedication are a great example to present and future generations of Phantoms. The evening was made complete with the presence and support of the Nevarez Family. Louie Nevarez had passed earlier in the week. His spirit was felt throughout the evening and will be felt for generations to come. The Scholarship Dinner has raised over $5M during the 24 years that Lou Nevarez and Jesse Barragan had spearheaded the dinner as Co-Chairs.

The Alumni Association continues to be a source of support for Cathedral High School and its students. For over 35 years, the association has hosted monthly meeting and has been a driving force in maintaining an Alumni presence around campus. Starting with the Friends of Cathedral, the association helped save Cathedral from closing in 1985 and now is helping fund the future. The Alumni Association has committed to supporting

the Sustainability Campaign, by funding the renovation of the weight room, the association is supporting the wellness of our current Phantoms and future Phantoms! The association is a volunteer membership who is motivated to give back and, in the process, setting an example for our students. The members of the Alumni Association are living the mission of serving others!

Martin began his full-time studies at USC for his PHD in Music Theory. He continued as a member of the Cathedral High School Brother’s Community until January 1993 when he moved to the Brothers Provincialate Community at Mont La Salle, Napa, CA to complete his dissertation. The Cathedral High School Annual Scholarship Fund is a way to provide needed funding for students from low-income families, offer academic scholarships for our top students and to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of the school program. Following the tradition of St. John Baptist de la Salle, Cathedral College Preparatory High School has made a commitment to help make a quality Catholic education possible for committed students from the community. We ask that you consider investing in the future of Cathedral High School students.

Most donors find that a personal check is the easiest way to make a gift. These donations are fully tax-deductible and have an immediate impact upon the program for which the funds are allocated. Checks should be made payable to Cathedral High School and mailed to:

I I ) U N R ES TR ICTED FUND

Online: Visit the school’s homepage at cathedralhighschool.org and click on Give Now button.

These gifts could go to need or merit-based awards. Because this is a general fund, it gives our Office of Admissions and Development the flexibility to use your generosity in the way that’s most needed at any given time. This is particularly critical to meeting emerging demands and opportunities that can’t be predicted in typical long-range planning.

Cathedral opened in 1925 on the site of the Old Calvary Cemetery just northeast of downtown as the first Catholic high school for boys to be established by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Cathedral High School, the Christian Brothers and our Lasallian colleagues are committed to providing a quality college preparatory and religious education to our students. Cathedral High School is truly unique and continues to serve a need that is more important than ever. More than 90% of our students require financial aid. Our ability to keep these students at Cathedral and develop them into men that Enter to Learn, and Leave to Serve, is increasingly dependent on Financial Aid. Contributing to the endowment fund would assist in continuing the mission of St. John Baptist de la Salle.
