St Catherine’s Hospice Many people think a hospice is a place where people spend their final moments, but at St Catherine’s Hospice the focus is on helping people make the most of the time they have left.

The local hospice encourages patients to live well and recognises that people are more than their illness; it’s not their diagnosis but their individual wishes and needs that matter most to the people at St Catherine’s.

Committed to providing the local community with the best possible end of life care, the local hospice has been providing free, expert care to people across Sussex and Surrey for the last 30 years. Last year, more than 2,000 patients were cared for with eight in ten patients’ cared for in the comfort of their own homes.

As well as tailored practical care, St Catherine’s also offers people: emotional support, welfare advice, spiritual care, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, complementary therapies and creative activities such as music and art. The hospice recognises that, at such a challenging time, emotional support is just as important as the physical care they provide, and are also there to offer support and advice to families, friends and carers.

Although their services are free, each day it costs St Catherine’s more than £17,000 to provide their care. Receiving less than a third of their running costs from the NHS, for the rest, the hospice relies on the generosity and support of the local community.

Michaela Clements, Event Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said, “We’re thrilled to be working with Barns Green and are really grateful to them for choosing us as this year’s charity partner. The money that is raised from this year’s race will make a real difference to terminally ill people in Barns Green and beyond.

By supporting today’s Half Marathon, you’re helping ensure we can continue to be there to provide our expert end of life care to people in future. On behalf of the hospice, I’d like to thank everyone for your support and wish all runners good luck.”

Rob Champion 1961 – 2016 It was with great sadness that the Barns Green Half Marathon Committee was informed of the death of Rob Champion in February of this year after a fifteen month battle with cancer. His family chose to support St Catherine’s Hospice in his memory.

Rob was a founder of Sports Systems, our entry and timing company, and has been involved with the Barns Green Half Marathon for many years.

Rob was always happy, enthusiastic and honest, with a positive attitude to life. He was a keen runner and also a very talented and enthusiastic cyclist. He loved travelling and returned to South Africa regularly where he once lived and met his wife Ruth. When diagnosed with cancer Rob created a bucket list and with his normal enthusiasm was happily ticking the boxes – a balloon ride and more places to visit.

Rob and his crew would arrive on Race Day with all the timing equipment and always said that the Barn Green Half and volunteers were a “well oiled machine”- Praise indeed.

After a bacon roll work began and a successful Race Day would ensue.

Rob will be remembered for his positivity and also his great diplomacy and efficiency on Race Days. He will be truly missed.

Dear Readers Once again it is my pleasure to welcome you to Barns Green, our delightful village in the heart of West Sussex. 2016 is a special year as we are holding a 10K run on the same day as our popular Half Marathon. I do hope that those of you who want to get fit but find the Half too long at the moment will enjoy our 10K route also going through Christ’s Hospital School grounds.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

With that in mind I must say how delighted we are that we have Mr John Franklin the Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital School starting the race this year. We are sincerely grateful to him for having allowed us once again to route the Half Marathon through the school grounds, especially this year with the addition of the 10K running around the playing fields.

This year the charity we are supporting is St Catherine’s Hospice who are based in Crawley and do such wonderful work, so when you see their collecting buckets please give generously.

I now must thank our sponsors, MORETH>N, Blue Coat Fitness Club, and Horsham District Council for their continued support. It is very hard for a small village to get sponsors without assuring them of television coverage. If you know of any companies who might be interested please let me know as they make so much difference to the amount of money raised for our Charity and Good Causes and help keep the events at a Gold standard.

This programme is very special, not many races have one, and I owe a great deal to Annie Jennings and Sue McLeod for their voluntary expertise which involves many hours in putting it together. I now come to my committee and thank them for their time and energy during the last year in making this event possible. Some will have started work at 6.30am this morning! I also welcome on to our team this year Ray Fisher and Phil Ryley, two people who have done so much on the race day for many years. All the committee are volunteers!

My thanks must also go to our many marshals & helpers around the courses and car parks(we need at least 145 and they too give their time voluntarily).

Without their continued support the races would be impossible to run.

Prize giving will take place at 12.10, although it may not be possible to announce all the awards at this time. All results will be published on our website (www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk) as soon as possible.

All runners who finish the course and are wearing their race number will receive a commemorative medal. The first 100 will receive a gold medal, the next 200 silver and all the other finishers bronze.

Other Awards include: Half Marathon Trophies for Ist, 2nd and 3rd places for men and women.Plus £250 for 1st place, £150 for 2nd and £100 for third.

Awards for Ist team (men and women).3 per team.

Awards for 1st and 2nd places in the following Vets categories for men and women: 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+ Course record £250 for men and women.

Families are warmly invited to find out more about the School - both day and boarding opportunities for boys and girls for entry into Years 7, 9 and the Sixth Form. We look forward to meeting you on the Village Green at our Marquee during the Half Marathon and 10K. In addition, Open Mornings are held termly at the School. The Table Top Shop raises funds for St Nicolas Church, Itchingfield. The shop stocks antique and modern bric-abrac, gifts, books, toys etc at very reasonable prices. All items are donated by parishioners and the current project is to provide a toilet in the church.

TheTO Road to the London Marathon ROAD THE LONDON MARATHON

Clockhouse Physiotherapy was pleased to support our podiatrist Steph in her efforts to train for the London Marathon 2016.

At week 6 of her 16 week training programme Steph hit a snag with anterior right knee pain on a downhill section at about 9 miles. As a highly competent podiatrist and foot bio-mechanist Steph had already identified some instability in her right ankle and was trialling an orthotic before she asked for some help. The insole certainly helped but had not fully resolved the issue as pain persisted on the downhill sections of her longer runs.

When we assessed Steph’s posture it became clear that her shoulder height was uneven and there were several subtle twists and counter twists throughout her trunk, pelvis and lower limb: Such a posture is likely to reflect the position of her body throughout her working day (see image 1 below).

Following this we observed Steph performing some simple tasks related to her running style which allowed us to identify several specific areas of interest within her kinetic chain. These areas all seemed to relate to her knee pain in different ways, but were not located at her knee. And, indeed when we assessed Steph’s knee in situ there did not appear to be anything directly wrong with the knee itself.

Using our knowledge of the body and how it’s different parts integrate with each other, we were able to identify a link between a dysfunction of Steph’s trunk and her foot; which, when addressed together, meant Steph felt ‘stronger’, ‘more connected’ and importantly for her ‘pain-free’. Image 2 shows how impairments of the upper body can affect the lower limb and vice-versa.

Following this assessment we were able to help release some muscular structures that were inhibiting Steph’s movement potential and thus allow her to move more freely without irritating her knee. In order to strengthen this new connection and to help Steph continue with her marathon training she had some specifically designed exercises incorporated into her regime, which, she assures us she did diligently!

Steph went on to complete the London Marathon injury free and in a very good time.
