LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to you all on this, the 30th anniversary of the Barns Green Half Marathon. It is hard to believe that this race started way back in the Eighties.

However I am delighted to say we have invited back some of the original committee from 1982 and their Chairman Alan Train, to help celebrate this wonderful achievement. Without them there would be no race today.

One person who has run every race, is John Booker who this year will have No 1 on his vest, in recognition of this achievement. Many congratulations John, “Good luck on the day!”

Of course a change this year is the date for the race, a month earlier and this was made possible thanks to the help and agreement of Christ’s Hospital School as we will be running through their grounds during term time. Not only will the runners be running through the historic quadrangle this year, but the school’s renowned marching band will be playing as well. What a marvelous spectacle it will be! Good luck to the staff and boys who will be running the race for the first time.

The main charity this year that we are supporting is The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity so please, give generously!

Once again, I must thank all the residents and businesses within the area of the BGHM for their continuing support and co-operation with regard to the Road Closure Order. I would welcome any useful comments you might have regarding the race.

CH Marching Band to play for Half Marathon About 3 miles into the Barns Green Half Marathon, the race route goes through the stunning grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. In the past, the race has always coincided with half term at the school and so it has always been staged when the pupils and many of the staff are away. This year because of the earlier race date it will be different as the race takes place during term time. The school are very excited about the prospect and Head Master, John Franklin said, “We are delighted that the pupils and staff at the school will get the chance to see such a wonderful local event. We intend to have our famous marching band made up of over 100 pupils playing in the quadrangle beside the runners as they pass through. This will be a great spectacle and will hopefully give all those running in the race an extra lift. Also, several of the school staff will be competing in the race as well as some of the older pupils and they are sure to get plenty of encouragement as they run through the beautiful main avenue”.

Provisional results will be displayed in the Village Hall as soon as they are available.

Prize giving will take place at 1.15pm, although it may not be possible to announce all the awards at this time. All results will be published on our website (www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk) as soon as possible and in the West Sussex County Times on 4th October. A copy of the results will be posted to all entrants. This service is included in the entry fee.

All runners who finish the course and are wearing their race number will receive a commemorative medal. The first 100 will receive a gold medal, the next 200 silver and all the other finishers bronze.

BGHM wins Major National Award 2012

The Barns Green Half Marathon won a major national award this year as the “Most Improved Event” in the UK. The Award was presented at the Runners World Personal Best Awards 2012 at a glamorous ceremony in London on 19th April.

What makes these Awards so significant is the fact that the people who really matter – Britain’s runners themselves, decided each of the awards. There are two race category awards and the winners are worked out by averaging feedback ratings posted on the Runners World website after runners had completed the events. The ‘Most Improved Event’ category is for the race that scored the biggest improvement in its ratings, compared to its last running, on the Runners World website in the 12 months from March 2011 to March 2012. Runners World is Internationally renowned as one of the leading running magazines. The Runners World Personal Best awards have been running since 2007 and recognize and reward the best events, products and services in running. LOCAL MP TO START HALF MARATHON WITH A BANG! I am delighted to be here today and to be part of the 30th anniversary of the Barns Green Half Marathon. This is an event of which the village of Barns Green and its residents should be very proud. It is a great achievement for so many dedicated volunteers to have organised the running of this race over such a long period of time. The Barns Green Half Marathon is a real credit to the village and by raising so much money for charity, various local sports clubs, organisations and other groups, it shows just what can be achieved to help benefit your local community.

In the UK this year, we have just staged the world’s biggest sporting events, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A huge part of the smooth running of these Games was down to the thousands of Games Makers who gave up their time to help make the events such an outstanding success. Well, all of you involved in helping to stage this event should be equally proud of what you have achieved.

Good luck to all the runners today and well done to everyone who played a part in making the event possible. Here’s to the next 30 years of the Barns Green Half Marathon.

Keith Valentine - 1993 and still running today!

Keith Valentine was a keen sportsman at school playing rugby, football, cricket and athletics, deciding when he left school at the age of sixteen, that he would play local football. In 1983, after talking to his neighbour, he agreed to go jogging with him and gradually over the months built up to 10-12 miles once a week, with some shorter ones thrown in. Then in 1984 he entered the Horsham 10 miler in the July (77.25) and found he enjoyed it. It was then he decided to run his first half-marathon at Barns Green in the October and ran 1hr-42mins-31secs and the following year ran in 1-38-58.

In the January of 1986 he joined Horsham Joggers and got some proper training and lots of encouragement from the members.

Over the next few years he became fitter & quicker and by the time he reached 40yrs his Barns Green time was down to 1.17.34 (p.b) for that course and finished in 14th place.

This year’s race at Barns Green will be the 100th half-marathon he has run and also his 7th this year, but it has taken him 27yrs to do it!

Keith says ”I must have run thousands of miles over the years. I am now 58 and still enjoy training and racing although it gets harder every year, but I have met so many people through running and ensured long time friendships. I still train 5 days a week (30-35 miles a week). If there is one thing that was a high-light for me, it was the 1994 Great South 10 miler when I started side by side with Steve Cram in the elite cage and led him for the first 6 miles, then he came roaring past me (show off!). I later found out that he used it as a training run, because he had 6 pints of lager and a curry the night before the race.

This year is my 23rd time of doing the BGHM, there are a lot of first timers this year and a lot from my club, good luck and enjoy it. Finally I would like to thank my main group of training partners for helping me along and staying patient with me over the years.”

Christs Hospital School Pupils - New Involvement with BGHM Miles for Miles

Year 13 pupils (Grecians) at Christ’s Hospital brought down the curtain on their cancer charity fundraising drive with a post A Level picnic at the end of the summer term.

Miles McCulloch, a pupil at the School, was admitted to the Marsden Hospital just after Christmas suffering from lymphoma. While he was in hospital, his housemates decided to raise money for the Royal Marsden by running ‘Miles for Miles’.

Several thousand miles later – and with over £10,000 raised by pupils from many different boarding houses – Miles and his parents were the guests of honour at the picnic as the whole house ran one last time round ‘the mile’, the perimeter of the sports pitches. Each pupil was sporting a brand new hand-made ‘Miles for Miles’ bandanna, designed and created by members of the house.

The pupils’ fundraising page (www.justgiving.com/grecianseast) remains open and the house was delighted to learn that, inspired by their efforts, the Barns Green Half Marathon, which passes through the School, has made the Royal Marsden its nominated charity for this year’s race.

Best of all is the news that following intensive treatment Miles is now well enough to be returning to repeat Year 13 in September.

Musical Accompaniment

As the Barns Green Half Marathon celebrates 30 years, Christ’s Hospital is helping to mark the occasion with a musical accompaniment from the School’s famous Band as the runners pass through the magnificent grounds.

With engagements such as Lord’s, the RFU Twickenham and the Lord Mayor’s Show, the origin of the Band dates back to the mid-nineteenth century when some of the pupils requested that instruments be purchased to enliven their marching drill. The Treasurer of Christ’s Hospital agreed and, with money from his own pocket, purchased a few instruments and paid the salary of the first Band Master. Over the years, the Band has grown from a small static group to a dynamic and highly-trained group of musicians who accompany the pupils as they march into lunch, traditionally known as ‘Band Parade’.

maRatHoN. a CommoN eNougH WoRd but WHat doeS it meaN?

It derives from the story of an Athenian messenger who ran 22 miles from Marathon to Athens with news of victory over Persia in 490BC. Today’s marathons are 26 miles and 385 yards: the yards were added by the British for the 1908 Summer Olympics, to ensure the race ended under the Royal Box. These are facts worth knowing, and are typical of the types of stories that satisfy the enquiring minds we cultivate at Christ’s Hospital.

Reminiscences of the BGHM by Steven Boyd

I am looking forward to taking part in this year’s 30th Barns Green Half Marathon. I grew up in Barns Green and in 1982 I completed the inaugural half marathon. This was a huge personal leap for me. As a youth I was not gifted with talents for sports, at school I was always the weedy kid last to be picked for the teams!

I had started running around the village in preparation to take part in a short fun run with colleagues. People saw me doing this and kept asking me if I was training for the half marathon. Enough people kept asking me this to make me think that maybe this was something I could achieve and so the training began.

I managed to continually run around the course of the first Barns Green Half Marathon and was satisfied with my achievement. I continued to run only this event until some colleagues persuaded me to join Horsham Joggers. I then began running other races and other distances.

The rest as they say, is history. At the time of writing this I have completed 39 half marathons and 42 full marathons. Running marathons has taken me to countries around the world such as Israel, South Africa, Denmark, Switzerland, America, Spain, Germany to name a few. I even took part in the first ever 10K run on the North runway of Heathrow airport in March 2006.

I am currently a member of London Frontrunners.

All of this started with me joining in with the first ever BGHM. So this year, I am not only celebrating my 30th anniversary of running, but am proud to be running BGHM with my eldest niece Karen and my youngest niece Amanda who both spent their childhood years living in Barns Green.

So my family will be out in force to celebrate the Barns Green Half Marathon, now established as a quality event on the annual race calendar.

Thirty Years of the Barns Green Half Marathon by Nigel Currie Barns Green thrives because of the friendship and cooperation between the villagers and the wonderful range of community activities that are organised. There is no better example of this community activity and spirit than the village’s biggest single event, the Barns Green Half Marathon which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The beginnings of the race came in winter 1981 when a few of the members of Barns Green Football Club asked Alan Train, the newly appointed Head of Muntham House School in the village, if they could use the school’s floodlit tennis courts for training. Mr. Train agreed, and in the interests of promoting good relations with the local community allowed the football club to use the facilities at no cost. To show their appreciation, the footballers asked if there was anything that they could do in return for the school. The Head said that the school was always in need of various items of equipment and that at the time it was hoping to raise money to buy a camcorder which would cost around £350. It was decided to hold a sponsored race and on a Sunday morning a few weeks later, thirteen members of the football team along with the Headmaster and his two sons took part in a ten mile run which raised the necessary money for the camcorder. After the race the runners celebrated over a few beers in the Village Club, and it was here that a plan was hatched to set up an organised village half

marathon to be run sometime during the next year.

An organising committee was put together and after months of hard work the first race was held at 11am on Sunday 24th October 1982.

Amazingly it attracted around one thousand runners. Having never organised a race of this size before, the organisers who were all volunteers, had to perform miracles to get the race underway on time. The first challenge was to get all the people and cars into the village and parked. Then they had to get all the runners registered and away from the start exactly on time at 11am in order to comply with the road closure regulations which had been granted by the council. Despite all the obstacles and logistical problems the race was a huge success and the organising committee had shown that it was possible to stage such a big event which clearly had the potential to be developed and established as an annual event.

Alan Train whose personal motto “Vincit Qui Patitur! – He who endures conquers, was adopted by the race, was certainly a man of vision. In the programme notes for that very first race, he wrote “We hope that you will enjoy your experience today – whether you are a competitor or a spectator, and that on this day and in the years to come, we can together continue to kindle a spirit of personal endeavour, enriching all with the knowledge that this is in essence a most charitable event”.

After that first race, The President of the Sussex County Amateur Athletics Association wrote, “Here we have a race initiated by a few local jogging enthusiasts, blossoming in a short time into the largest road race in Sussex, respected for its efficient organisation and welcomed by joggers and AAA Club members alike.” This endorsement was just what the event needed to give it credibility and the impetus to move forward, and so the Barns Green Half Marathon was established.

The race has been run every year since that first race with the exception of 1987 when the Great Storm devastated the area and many of the trees that were blown down blocked the race route and the race had to be cancelled.

The initial sponsored run which preceded the first Barns Green Half Marathon raised £350.

In the 30 years since, it has become a huge fund raiser and each year hundreds of pounds are raised for worthy causes. Last year, the race raised around £12,500 for various charities, local organisations and youth groups.

The local sports clubs receive donations for their help and support as do groups such as the local playgroup, Scouts and Guides who all help man the car parks, drinks stations as well as helping with marshalling on the day.

Vernon Jennings is the Race Director and is passionate about what the Barns Green Half Marathon has achieved, “At a time when many more road races and events are being created all around the country which very often enjoy substantial financial help and support from major Councils and local authorities, it is to the

great credit of the people of Barns Green that they have been able to keep our race going and developing over so many years”.

A small army of volunteers from in and around the village give their time to cover all aspects of the planning for the race and ensure that the race goes ahead smoothly and safely creating an event of which Barns Green and its residents can be very proud. “Last year on the Thursday evening before the race, the Barns Green Youth Club packed up over 1750 “goody bags” in the Village Hall for all the competitors!

It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters and I was absolutely thrilled to be able to present our Youth Club with a cheque for £1000 a few weeks later. This money has helped to save our Youth Club after local authority budget cuts threatened its existence.

To me it was a perfect example of how village life should work”.

Of course the race itself is very important to the individual runners. Most who take part come from the surrounding area and Horsham Joggers have been key supporters over the years. Indeed one of their runners, John Booker ran in the very first race and will have the honour of wearing the Number 1 on his bib when he once again competes in the 2012 event. However, competitors also come from other parts of the country and indeed there are groups of runners who regularly come over from Holland and Germany to take part in the race.

years. Many are fun runners who use the event to enable them to raise money for charity and fulfil personal goals. However the race has always attracted top quality athletes. The first winners in 1982 were John Leversedge who won the men’s race in a time of 1hr 08mins 40 seconds and Tracey Howard who won the women’s race in 1hr 19 min 55 seconds.

Since then there have been many outstanding performances in all the various age group races.

In 2010 the course record was smashed by the outstanding 20 year old Kenyan athlete Edwin Kipyego. He completed the 13.1 mile course in 1 hour 4 minutes 28 seconds, 21 seconds faster than the previous record which had stood for 24 years. He was so fast that at one point on the course when the car leading the runners was held up by backmarker runners in the middle of the figure of eight circuit, it was overtaken by the Kenyan!

Various factors make the Barns Green Half Marathon a very popular race with the runners.

The fact that the route is entirely closed to traffic and the scenic countryside are key factors. Indeed, at Runner’s World’s recent Annual Personal Best Awards Night 2012, the Barns Green Half Marathon received the award for Most Improved Event in the UK. This award was particularly significant because it was decided by the voting of the runners. It is another boost to an event which has become an institution within the village.

This year’s race takes place on Sunday 30th September, and as it did 30 years ago, it will start at exactly 11am. Local MP Francis Maude will officially start the race and one other new addition to the event will be that the magnificent Christ’s Hospital School marching band will be playing while all the runners go through the grounds of the school during the race. What could be more uplifting for the runners and what more fitting way to celebrate 30 years of running in Barns Green.

My Poem for “South Today”

Read by Jeremy Paxman on BBC1 on 17th October 1988 October 16th, that terrible morn Will we ever forget that hurricane storm?

We won’t, The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee, We had made plans all year for this month. You see Over 2,000 runners to our village they come To compete in our annual 13½ mile run.

We had ordered the programmes, medals and prizes, Even portable loos and T-shirts, in all sizes.

We had offers of help from all village clubs, Extra beer was on order for our local pubs.

The police, the doctor and St. John’s Ambulance Brigade Were coming along to give us their aid.

Roads have to be closed, so to some residents, Letters were delivered. “Sorry for the inconvenience” The numbers were posted; we were ready to go, We wanted to put on a really good show.

And then, disaster, all those beautiful trees In a matter of hours, were brought to their knees.

All roads were blocked, the power lines down.

It was impossible to get into our local town.

For nine days we were without electricity, No lovely hot bath, or a good cup of tea!

The race had to be off, there was never a doubt, But how could we inform the runners what it was all about.

We met round the pub, in the darkness of night And wrote each one a letter by candlelight, “Sorry” we said, “don’t shed a tear, We promise to put on a good run next year” And now it’s October, Nineteen Eighty Eight And Sunday 23rd is a very special date, So please come along and join in the fun In the best ever Barns Green Half Marathon Run.

Barns Green Half Marathon – The Modern Era by Penny Simpson

Although this is the 30th anniversary of the running of this great race there was a time way back in 1998 when it very nearly folded. The original committee had set up the race in 1982 at a time when “jogging” was becoming the “in” thing to do. The first race was a fun run for both adults and children and there are still many people in Barns Green who are very proud of the fact that they took part all those years ago. From 1982 to 1997 the race was an important feature of Barns Green life and each year lots of villagers were involved in organising it with many more helping on the day itself.

David Francis, Mr Barns Green, had been on the organising committee from the beginning and when he stopped competing in it, was well known for being Tail End Charlie on race day, bringing up the rear of the race and collecting in all the barriers.

He was also in charge of car parking and was prone to a bit of a panic if the weather was inclement in the weeks leading up to race day. I can remember being asked several times over the years how many cars our driveway would take, should the field above the green be unusable! In the event, I don’t believe it ever was – although I do recollect that the local farmer had to be called in occasionally to use his tractor to tow out a few.

As a family, we had been very involved with the Half Marathon over the years up to 1998 with Chris and the boys running in the race and myself helping on the funnel, also having family and friends to stay who also really enjoyed the event, so imagine our consternation when having a chat with David one day in early 1998 he mentioned that the upcoming race would probably be the last! Apparently the current Race Secretary was retiring (at that time – pre computerisation – the greatest proportion of the work fell to the Race Sec who was responsible for all the entries and the results) and there was no one to replace her. Maggie Geal, preceded by Jacquie Lilley had both done fantastic jobs.

Not long afterwards, Vernon, Chris and I had a conversation about what a shame it would be if the race folded because no one appeared to be willing to take it over. We thought there was such huge potential in it for the village. That conversation might have taken place in the pub – in fact I think it must have done, because the outcome was that we spoke to David, volunteering ourselves and before we knew it we were at the next committee meeting! We three worked in tandem with them that first year, but were already beginning to have ideas of our own about how to take things forward on a more formal and innovative footing. I think it is fair to say that at that time the race was no longer in its first heady days of success. Perhaps new blood and new ideas were just what was needed.

David Francis and Arthur Dodgson stayed on the committee for several years, David until his death and Arthur until he moved away to Coventry. Their wisdom and advice were invaluable to us.

Having been in charge of the funnel for several years, though not on the original committee, Vernon took over as Race Director. He was keen to have more formal meetings with minutes and task lists so that everyone knew what was expected of them. His team of Marshals received training and individual instruction packs. Chris took over as Treasurer. His first job was to produce formal accounts as none had previously been in place. He was determined that all the effort needed to organise the event would produce a bigger profit from now on. Under his stewardship, the race profit has increased from £113 that first year to £1,255 in the second year and to £15,200 in 2010. This meant that over the intervening years, many more projects, charities and village organisations could be helped.

When I took over as Race Secretary, the first thing I did was update to a new computer programme with Sports Systems which made results quicker to ascertain on race day, making for an earlier prize-giving. This eventually led to “chip to chip” timing which makes the whole process easy – no more spending hours in the hall matching up the finishing race numbers to the finishing times. Entries on the day, always a bugbear, were easier to manage too! I still had to process all the pre-race entries on my computer, and then send out all the race numbers and instructions though. It was to be a few more years before we would be in a position to pay Sport Systems to do all this for us.

The number of entries has also increased from 600 in 1998 to 2,100 plus last year.

Along the way as the race has grown, we are part of the Sussex Grand Prix of races, and we also host the Sussex Championships on alternate years. To make sure that our race continued its high safety record, we joined BARR starting as Bronze level members and we rose to Silver the following year and then Gold the year after that.

The requirements of BARR vary from having all the licences on show to crowd control and having enough toilets and drink stations. Of course we now have the dreaded Health & Safety, much of which is common sense but it all has to be written down and every possible contingency thought of. I am told that the current file is over an inch thick!

After 10 years as Race Secretary, I retired to escape the stress! I still help out on Race Days and it is a fantastic day which my family still come home for. Much has been made in the newspapers recently about the Games Makers of the Olympics and that since the Games volunteering has increased across the country. Volunteering has always been alive and well in Barns Green. Well done to the present Committee of RACE MAKERS who are doing a wonderful and efficient job. Long may the Barns Green Half Marathon continue. It is very good for the village. Here’s to the next 30 years!
