COMMUNITY ACCESS TO THE ARTS

2019 Impact Report

DEAR FRIENDS AND PARTNERS OF CATA, For 27 years, CATA’s mission has been simple: to create a vibrant and inclusive community through the arts. Through countless workshops, performances, art exhibits, yoga poses, and dance solos, one thing has never changed: your support makes CATA possible. Your generosity brings joy to CATA artists in so many ways. Imagine adding your favorite color to a canvas as you paint your very own self portrait. Think about the feeling of your heart thumping to the beat of a drum as you make music with your friends. Picture yourself stepping up to dance a solo as your peers cheer you on. Imagine how it feels to finally share the talent and passion you’ve been holding inside. You make these moments of growth and creativity possible for Natasha, Maria, Mathew, Izzy, and so many others.

Your support made it possible for CATA artist Kim (BCArc) to see her painting on display at the Worcester Art Museum. Margaret and CATA artist Natasha with her painting at the Clark Art Institute.

CATA’s vision of inclusion takes work. And it wouldn’t be possible without people like you who have stood by us. Whether you’ve been supporting us for 27 years or just gave your first gift, you are making a big impact for hundreds of CATA artists.

Last year—thanks to you—783 people with disabilities became painters, poets, dancers, drummers, yogis, actors, singers, and jugglers. Because of you, each CATA artist has a place to discover their artistry, to connect with their community, and to know that their contributions are valued.

You’re bringing joy through the arts. Thanks to your support, CATA artists are unleashing their creativity and experiencing the joy of self expression through dynamic arts workshops and public events.

Please enjoy reading about the powerful work you made possible in 2019. Thank you for your support! Warmly,

Margaret Keller, Executive Director

Arts Workshops that Change Lives, Because of You With your support in 2019, CATA programs reached more people with disabilities than ever before.

New partnerships with organizations like Mass Audubon helped to nurture the talents of CATA artists like Marshall (Leander House).

783 CATA ARTISTS SERVED

MORE TALENTS REVEALED

Thanks to you, CATA workshops grew by 15% last year— so more people with disabilities could explore their talents as painters, dancers, actors, singers, drummers, jugglers, yogis, and poets.

You helped grow CATA’s program for artists with significant physical disabilities so they could share their creative vision in one-onone adaptive painting workshops.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS EXPANDED You gave over 200 students in special education programs a way to express all that’s inside them. And your support helped launch new programs for students with trauma-related and emotional challenges.

ELDERS INSPIRED

You brought joy to Angel (BCArc) in CATA’s World Music & Drumming workshop.

You helped elders in area nursing homes— including those with Alzheimer’s and dementia—connect with their talents and life stories through transformative encounters with CATA’s Art Cart program.

INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS You connected CATA writers with middleschool students in a powerful, collaborative writing project that made headlines!

You Put CATA Artists in the Spotlight

LOCAL STUDENTS INSPIRED You gave 150 local students the chance to cheer on CATA artists and experience the power of inclusion at our Annual Performance dress rehearsal.

You helped CATA artists share their talents with the whole community, through sold-out performances and bold new art exhibits.

OUR BIGGEST ANNUAL PERFORMANCE WEEKEND YET Because of you, more than fifty CATA artists shared their talents in two sold-out performances at Shakespeare & Company. And your support helped launch CATA’s new ukulele band and singing group, which made their debut in a one-of-a-kind musical finale.

CATA artist Maria (United Cerebral Palsy of Berkshire County) was proud to see her artwork at the Clark Art Institute— thanks to you!

ARTISTS AND ART SALES REACHED NEW HEIGHTS

CATA WRITERS CELEBRATED FROM PAGE TO STAGE

You gave 125 CATA painters and sculptors with disabilities an opportunity to share their talents through major art exhibits at the Clark Art Institute and Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, as well as year-round exhibits at Tunnel City at Mass MoCA, Good Purpose Gallery, and beyond.

You gave CATA writers a platform to share their creative voice at our fourth Annual Poetry Reading at The Mount. And you drew the community into the act with a dozen guest readers performing CATA writing in front of a sold-out crowd.

And thanks to you, 79 works of art sold. That’s over $17,000 in sales, creating commissions for CATA artists!

You made it possible for CATA musicians like Cathy (BFAIR) to collaborate in a rocking performance on stage at Shakespeare & Company.

CATA was awarded the Nonprofit Excellence Award for “Collaboration” from the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network!

Building CATA’s Future You’re helping to build a strong and sustainable future for CATA. In 2019, you helped us launch CATA’s first-ever capital campaign. Because of strong support from our community, CATA will soon have a permanent home to nurture the talents of CATA artists and grow innovative programs for people with disabilities across the Berkshires.

MORE EXCITING NEWS: Our participation as a member of the Barr-Klarman Massachusetts Arts Initiative has helped us create strategic plans for CATA’s adaptive capacity and future financial health. And CATA’s selection for the Arts Build Community Capacity Building Program by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation has allowed CATA’s staff and board to test new ideas and increase community engagement through the arts— especially among lower-income residents, communities of color, youth, and immigrants. Additionally, Executive Director Margaret Keller was selected for Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management program for nonprofit leaders with a full scholarship awarded from Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

“Wonderful and far reaching” Why Janet and John Egelhofer were inspired to make a difference through CATA The moment Janet and John Egelhofer first encountered CATA, there was no turning back. “After you see a CATA performance,” says John, “you’re hard pressed to walk away without getting involved. You feel you must be involved!” Having heard about CATA from a friend, Janet and John became intrigued. They made a gift, and soon after, attended their first CATA event. “It was a revelation,” says Janet. “And such a joyful experience. From the artists to the audience, you could tell everyone was proud to be part of it.”

Fiscal Year 2019: Financial Overview To every CATA supporter and partner—thank you! You’re bringing joy to hundreds of people with disabilities. In 2019, we celebrated 26 years of a balanced budget, and either met or exceeded targets in all income categories. Because so many people we serve have limited incomes, CATA turns to donors to support our work: contributed income makes up 75% of our budget. Support for CATA grew in 2019, with a record-high 723 donors contributing. The vast majority of CATA’s expenses are directed to our programs serving artists with disabilities. Your contributions are critical to sustaining the workshops, exhibits, and performances that provide life-changing opportunities for CATA artists. CATA deliberately worked to create a surplus in 2019 in order to jump-start funding on a fully accessible new home for CATA, now under construction!

“I’m always talking about CATA,” says Janet. “Even my sister has become involved! Everyone we know, everyone we talk to, shares the respect we have for this organization. No one ever regrets getting involved with CATA.”

Contributed: $904,076 Individual: $637,284 Corporations: $73,792 Grants /Foundations: $193,000

“And it’s one of the most organized groups I’ve encountered,” Janet adds. “The devotion, commitment, and effectiveness of the organization is humbling. We’re proud to be part of it.”

Total Income:

$1,163,440

Program Services: $789,678 Management and General: $63,858 Fundraising: $205,623 Total Expenses:

What really inspires John is the range of opportunities CATA makes possible— and how it meets every person where they are, regardless of age or ability. “For one CATA artist it’s the accomplishment of tossing and catching a juggling ball,” says John. “For another, it’s performing a stand-up comedy routine in front of a big crowd. The spectrum of work CATA does is impressive.”
