What is luxury? According to Webster’s, it’s “a condition of abundance or great ease and comfort: a sumptuous environment.”

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Waynette Goodson 336.605.1033 wgoodson@casualliving.com FEATURES EDITOR Jennifer Bringle

Where is luxury? I think we get pigeonholed into thinking we can only find luxury across the pond in Paris or Milan. When it fact, it’s right in our backyard. Case in point: Casual Market Chicago. Simply put, it’s the largest outdoor show in the world under one roof, held annually in September at The Mart. On the 14th floor, you’ll find some little brands like Century, Janus et Cie, Lloyd Flanders, Holly Hunt and Palecek. And then on floors 15 and 16, there are some other names like Gloster, Brown Jordan and Skyline. True, this market is more geared for the trade, but they also hold an Outdoor Design Conference in February, so mark your calendars. For a few of the luxurious outdoor products that I encountered at Casual Market Chicago, turn to page 4. Known as the playground for wealthy New Yorkers, the world’s elite have pilgrimaged to the Hamptons since the late 1800s. Today, you might snag a place there for around $30 million. On page 38, renowned designer Libby Langdon gives us an inside tour of her outdoor stylings at the Hampton Designer Showhouse.

“I want people to be overwhelmed with light and color in a way they have never experienced.” Those are the words of the great American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, who makes a grand return to the New York Botanical Garden in an eponymous exhibit through October. On page 32, Chihuly reminds us that art is a must for our outdoor spaces. Another must: outdoor entertaining. Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens are made in the U.S.A., affording designers a host of custom opportunities. Turn to page 62 for an interview with a California designer who “only does high-end outdoor kitchens.” And finally, we set the table in the most unusual of places—the roof. Discover an urban rooſtop tablescape on p. 64. What is your definition of luxury? We hope the pages of this October issue challenge your perception, or at least help shape your thinking of high outdoor design. □

Look no further than Casual Market Chicago to discover some of the most upscale pieces that the outdoor category has to offer. The show, held annually in September, attracts the world’s largest gathering of casual makers under one roof—and it did not disappoint. Yours truly visited some of the chicest showrooms and asked two questions: “What is the most luxurious piece in your collection and why?” For Century Furniture that meant one name: Thomas O’Brien and his new outdoor collection, which will be unveiled in its temporary showroom at 520 N. Hamilton Street at High Point Furniture Market. (Century is in the process of moving from their longtime space in Market Square Tower to a new permanent showroom at 200 Steele.)

4 | exterior design

The upcoming collection, in both wicker and metal, will be quite full: deep seating, dining, occasional pieces and a teak bench. And if O’Brien’s indoor collection for Century is any indication, the outdoor line will afford designers plenty of flexibility, as he’s known for adding warmth to modernism, with a dash of vintage flair. In the case of the above chair, that’s a nod to Art Deco scrollwork. “To me there’s something elegant and so chic about the scroll motif, with its neoclassical influence,” O’Brien says. “At the same time, these pieces feel new and modern. The Augustine Scrolled side chair looks wonderful sitting with the Augustine scrolled bench, like my original set. But pairs of them work anywhere, and a group of four would be handsome around a low table.”

OUTDOOR & CASUAL FRESH AIR FINDS Outdoor manufacturers, from well-known brands to newcomers, exhibit their diverse product offerings at High Point Market. The casual showrooms provide a variety of price points and style options in furniture, tables, ottomans, fabric, cushions, and more.

Alberto Velez, design director of Holly Hunt, describes the Manta Ray Daybed, part of the outdoor Moray collection: “Many aspects of this piece can be understood to express luxury. It is a very large sofa-bed that invites multiple guests to plunge in a sea of pillows made with our exquisite outdoor textiles. Luxury is tactile. It holds the user and all this upholstery in a meticulously woven shell so large it takes 10 days for the artisans to weave each piece. Luxury of time. The shell and pillows are elegantly suspended off the ground by a beautiful, fluid metal frame. Luxury in design.”

In the Atmosphere collection, we try to make it as lightweight looking as possible, but the fact you can do huge planks and you have this rich feeling, I think that’s really amazing.

Designer Elaine Smith created the world’s first line of luxury outdoor pillows, with the tagline “Inconceivably Outdoor.” Inspired by the runways of Paris, Rome and New York, the famed designer describes her new Rope collection in granite, lagoon, aqua and golden (shown): “I have so many introductions that are textural, and that’s key: It adds layering and depth. I love this pillow because every knot is made by hand. It’s just something you don’t see outside, and it’s what feels so luxurious and so special.”

iving in Los Angeles, it’s only natural Nikki Chu enjoys a star-studded interior design career. DESIGNER NIKKI CHU BRINGS HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR TO OUTDOOR SPACES

VISION

BY JENNIFER BRINGLE

24 | exterior design

Chu also brings that Hollywood-influenced flair to homes in less starry locales through her Nikki Chu home décor and accessories lines. She most recently collaborated with Jaipur Living for a collection of indoor-outdoor rugs and pillows in a chic black-andwhite palette designed to infuse sophisticated style to exterior rooms. We caught up with Chu to talk about her Jaipur line and how she creates outdoor spaces just as chic and glamorous as their famous owners. Why do you think outdoor design has become so important? The world of outdoor living is growing. We’re seeing stuff that is sophisticated enough that it could be used indoors. How do you extend the indoor space and make it look seamless? That’s what people want nowadays. What’s it like working with celebrity clients? I’m working with Tyra Banks right now. She has a beautiful California home with floor-to-ceiling windows—it’s almost as if there aren’t walls. She wanted her indoor to extend all the way out to the backyard—she didn’t want it to feel completely different. So we work to create that cohesiveness between the indoor and outdoor design aesthetic, using furnishings that have the same level of style as indoors. My celebrity clients are willing to spend the money to have the more sophisticated pieces. What was the thought process behind the design of the Jaipur Living collection? The intention with my line was to be very sophisticated and bring it outdoors. I focused on

big, bold patterns, and I’m a huge advocate of layering rugs, so I wanted the line to have multiple rugs that layer in the same space. I wanted them to be cohesive and go together. You’re a big proponent of affordable luxury. How can a designer create a luxe outdoor look while adhering to a budget? Where you want to spend your dollars is on great furniture and rugs. And then the pillows are the great pops of color. And because they’re a smaller investment, you can change them out to update the look. My Jaipur line could fit aesthetically with that sophisticated, luxurious space, but it has the price point so it will fit a budget. □

DESIGNER REBECCA COLE CREATES LUSH HIDEAWAYS IN NEW YORK CITY

VISION

BY LAURIE RUDD

26 | exterior design

etal and glass, cement and stone, modern lines and architectural icons—such are the substance and surroundings for the work of Rebecca Cole. As an author, television personality and exterior designer extraordinaire, Cole is sought-aſter for her green urban designs that live against a less than natural backdrop across rooſtops of the Big Apple. Outdoor furnishings for Cole oſten are constructed of the very same materials that surround her designs, from wire lounges to cement chairs. A project by Cole is always full of urban elements, as well as living things—both are integral to her work. Cole recognizes that for her residential and especially for boutique hospitality customers, well-designed outdoor spaces are expected. The exciting elements and perspective that she adds beyond that expectation is why they call her. “With our favorite client, boutique hotels, their mandate is to be innovative,” she says. “That includes their outdoor space, and they are willing to do interesting things.” The same is true for residential urban outdoor designs, including a massive rooſtop project in the historic section of Hell’s Kitchen. Here, she gives insight into that and other urban spaces. How would you describe your outdoor design style? Our branding phrase is, ‘A nod to the future with a wink to the past.’ I love old things, and I love things that are new, but seem to have age to them. If I walk away from a project and the owner says that it looks like it has been there for a while, I am happy. I like putting a modern twist on old style. How do the NYC surroundings influence your designs? Completely. Whatever garden or outdoor space I create in New York does not look like the same space I would do in California. In the urban setting, the space is oſten the smallest piece of what you are seeing. The design must work to both soſten the surroundings as well as mimic them. When your exterior design plans for a project come together, what comes first, landscaping or furnishings? The purpose for the space is first, which would mean furniture. If the purpose is to entertain, relax

or lounge, it has to have seating. When I begin an exterior design, I have completely in mind the furniture, accessories and what the landscaping elements will be. For the Hell’s Kitchen project (shown), what was the homeowner’s design goal? The exteriors are nearly as big as the home’s interior, and the property was actually purchased because it had a lot of outdoor space. Therefore, it was a priority. We had the luxury of dividing it into spaces for dining, lounging or reading. My goal was to turn the space into an outdoor loft with all the function of indoors. What were key elements within your planning? Shade was a major consideration. The rooftop is a sunny spot, and we wanted to provide shade without blocking the view. On one side we had a building with lots of windows and folks working within. We wanted to block that building and utilized a bamboo wall. Our plan was for something that you couldn’t see through, yet still see the skyline. I also used a pergola for the dining area, and it included planters to grow climbing wisteria. Working typically with small spaces, everything in my designs has to be multifunctional. My furniture also holds plants—the coffee table has a recessed area to hold a plant, or planters are a part of seat backs. Space is at a premium here.

In general, what makes the perfect outdoor room? I think two things. One is the comfort of being in it, so that it is not just precious and gorgeous from afar. That look is an important piece, but when you walk into the space, you also must be ‘hugged’ by it, and it becomes a transformative experience. In an urban environment, garden areas are such a surprise, and outdoor spaces that are surrounded by, and put you within, the trees create this natural ‘hug.’ □ exterior design | 27

VISION

JARDINICO CARACTÈRE BRINGS EUROPEAN STYLE TO THE AMERICAN OUTDOORS

28 | exterior design

BY LAURIE RUDD

V

ive la différence! That’s the spirit behind European shade line Jardinico Caractère. “Caractère in French means ‘with character,’” says Tom Vandemoortele, of Belgium-based designer and manufacturer Jardinico Parasols BVBA, parent company of Jardinico Caractère. “We liked the special name as it was different; not normal. It is just like our product—not the norm, but something different in design and construction.” As European design elements continue to grow in popularity for American audiences, international designers are recognizing the opportunities in residential and commercial outdoor projects stateside. We recently sat down with Vandemoortele, a member of the Jardinico Caractère design team, to discuss the influences of European outdoor design on the American backyard. What is included in a typical European outdoor living space? European outdoor spaces are not small or urban settings as imagined. Many homes—and second homes especially—include gardens and large outdoor spaces. Much like in the United States, bringing indoor looks to the outdoors is big. For umbrellas, that means more cantilevers to

accommodate seating areas with big lounge chairs, sofas or sectionals. Cantilever styles are growing (in popularity) across Europe and the U.S. Do you see the European preferences being well-received in the U.S.? Just as with European cars, our umbrella design features are being recognized in the U.S. as something that has not been seen before. One example is the grade of the European-style umbrella—it has a flatter grade. This is the European style, but it has been very well-received in the U.S. How is designing for European outdoor living different? There are big differences in European versus U.S. outdoor living. One area is with color. In the U.S., the color white is very popular right now. In Europe, it is not and in fact, the colors are going darker. While white finishes may be popular in the Hamptons, this is not the case in Europe. White is a finish we are seeing fading in popularity. However, the European outdoor market has taken something from the U.S., and that is the driftwood finish. It is a popular finish right now in the European marketplace. In fabrics, the European style is solids only; there are no stripes as in the U.S. What was the inspiration for Jardinico Caractère umbrellas? Our team was able to recognize a need in European markets for higher-end umbrellas. There were several high-end furniture collections, but umbrellas to complement these furnishings were not available. Our team worked to bring something to market that was well-engineered but also had a signature look. We are now introducing our elegant designs to the American market through an association with Treasure Garden/Shademaker. Are there certain considerations for hospitality shade designs? For the U.S. hospitality market, we provide more square umbrellas. In Europe, this is found in both residential and commercial settings as there are no round or octagonal umbrellas. With the square shapes, umbrellas can be positioned in groups to create coverage for larger areas. What do you see for the future? The design team—which has years of experience in this area—is seeing more functionality. Our umbrellas have a strong construction that creates a product well-suited for commercial and residential applications. We also are seeing more structure in textiles. For our products we use Natté, Sunbrella’s European fabric line. It’s important that canopies match furniture cushions, and we are able to do this with the Natté. □ exterior design | 29

he sweeping vistas of the New York Botanical Garden serve as a living canvas for the fantastical works of glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. The gardens host an exhibition of the renowned artist’s pieces—many created specifically for NYBG—through October 29. “Chihuly” marks his first major garden exhibition in New York in more than a decade. He first worked in glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. In 1968, the artist spent time in Venice, Italy, working at the Venini glass factory where he observed the team approach to blowing glass—a technique critical to his work today. In 1971, Chihuly cofounded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State—an international center for glass work study—and his art is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. “One can only wonder what kind of genius thought of blowing human breath down a metal tube, forming a bubble inside a molten blob of glass,” Chihuly has said. “And to think that this molten blob of glass is made

For me it’s the most mysterious and magical of all the inventions or materials that mankind has invented or discovered.” The NYBG show plays up Chihuly’s proclivity toward organic forms. DESIGNER LIBBY LANGDON ADDS COASTAL CHIC TO THE HAMPTON SHOWHOUSE PATIO

Like many city dwellers, I live in New York City part of the week and then in the Hamptons the rest of the week. And we love our home in Sag Harbor even more September through May than in the height of the summer. I work on many projects for clients on Long Island, and I find the design look and feel that clients request the most mixes sophistication, comfort and a dash of family fun. There’s a certain ease that we all look for when we escape the urban madness—we want to walk by the ocean, breathe in greenery, relax with family and friends, and just enjoy spending time outdoors. That’s the vibe I tried to capture in my design for the outdoor space of the Hampton Designer Showhouse. The East End architecture and natural elements inspired two of my outdoor furniture collections for NorthCape—the Mooring and the Ridgewood—so they were a natural choice for the space. Depending on the cushion fabric, they can take on many different styles, but they have inherent coastal-chic vibes. The Mooring collection, with its gray water hyacinth woven material and whitewashed wood-look frame, is an homage to the classic Hamptons cedar shake style home, with weathered shingles highlighted by bright white wood trim. I’m a big believer that our outdoor spaces should be as dynamic as our indoor spaces—it’s about creating the same comfortable, intimate and livable feel in our exteriors. I mix and match colors and fabrics the same as I would in any interior—can you imagine the lost design opportunity if all your indoor furniture was the exact same fabric? A mix of classic Hamptons nautical navy blue and fresh pale aqua adds dimension and allows the large terrace more visual interest than if it was just one color. There’s a reason the navy cushion with the white contrast welt is on many companies’ “quick ship” cushion program—it’s an overwhelmingly favorite look for consumers. Mixing the classic Hamptons blue and white with the pale aqua helps take the combo to another level.

The Ridgewood collection fully upholstered in white Phifertex fabric is designed to blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces. While this all-weather collection is meant to be outdoors, it’s stylish enough to be inside your home. The rugs are from my outdoor collection for Kas Rugs, and they’re generously sized to help delineate the different dining and seating areas. They help ground the vignettes as well as make you feel as though you are moving through indoor spaces. Contrasting the rug colors with the cushion colors adds depth and dimension to the overall design. I’m constantly inspired by living on the East End of Long Island. It’s a place to rest, relax and recharge, but it’s also a place that fuels design ideas and helps me create beautiful spaces and products that fit today’s modern lifestyles. □

sailing A DESIGN MAKEOVER TRANSFORMS A 1970S YACHT INTO A CONTEMPORARY CRAFT BY KURT JACOB MILLER

Chicago native and prominent interior designer Anthony Michael has another passion outside creating beautiful spaces— yachts. A lifelong yachtsman, he has bought and restored several classic vessels over the years. One of his most recent projects is affectionately called the H.R.H. Lola—as

44 | exterior design

in “Her Royal Highness Lola”—named for Michael’s four-pound Brussels Griffon dog. The yacht is a 1977 Hatteras MY (motor yacht). When Michael acquired the ship, it resembled a relic from 1970s Florida—all teak and shag carpeting, harvest gold and rattan. The designer and his team did a complete refit on the yacht, including having

the entire exterior painted gloss black. The interiors were to be chic, light and bright with a Hollywood-glam, boutique hotel feel. The yacht has a main salon, an aft dining table with seating for eight and a galley kitchen, also with seating. The ship can host a cocktail party dockside for up to 40, and sleeps six guests with three plush staterooms. Outside, a flybridge is outfitted with lighted furniture, and custom sun loungers offer relaxation on the bow. The team used an assortment of materials, including real marble, quartz, leather, handpainted faux marble, suede, grass cloth, original teak and hand-painted faux teak. Fabrics from Kravet, Schumacher and Pindler Corp. and wallcoverings from Osborne & Little, Christian Lacroix and DL Couch helped set the mood. Michael chose furnishings from Sunpan, Global Views and Worlds Away, and lighting by Robert Abbey and Visual Comfort, along with rugs from Surya, provided the finishing touches. â–Ą

A OUTDOOR

KITCHEN MEETS

GREAT DESIGN FOR ONE CALIFORNIA DESIGNER, IT’S ONLY BROWN JORDAN

FUSION

B Y WA Y N E T T E G O O D S O N

licia Marshall attended art college in San Francisco and majored in interior design. Today, her firm Innovative Outdoor Kitchens specializes in high-end backyard bars and kitchens. “I love the outdoors, and I love to cook,” Marshall says. “I was born and raised in California, and I felt like there was such a need. When I would go to model homes, all I would see was old-fashioned masonry outdoor kitchens without any storage, and they were all the same look, either stone or stucco. I opened this company five years ago, and it’s on fire!” Despite her busy schedule, Marshall talked with us about the allure of great outdoor kitchen design. In the case of outdoor kitchens, why is it important to hire a designer? As an outdoor designer, we stay up on all the latest products. For example, a lot of people really like the simplicity and consistency of certain kitchen countertops that they use inside—they’re not aware that if they use them outside, the products are not warranted for the outdoors and they’re going to crack. There are companies that are coming out with very similar products specifically for the outdoors. I also find that people don’t consider the functionality of the kitchen. They want to put the sink and the grill and the burner all next to each other, and when I say, ‘Where’s your prep space?’ They say, ‘Oh, I didn’t think of that.’ What attracts designers to Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens? It’s the quality, and people recognize the quality that they’ve had for so many years with Brown Jordan furniture. They’re also the most beautiful outdoor cabinets on the market. So many people now want to bring the indoors out, and by using these beautiful outdoor cabinets, it’s like having a high-end indoor kitchen—only outside. Your drawers, your shelves, you can put your outdoor eating utensils out there. So you have storage just like you have with your indoor kitchen, especially when you’re having a party, it makes it very simple. There are other outdoor kitchen makers on the market. Why Brown Jordan? Many of the other outdoor cabinet companies are made of resin. Whereas Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens are made of stainless steel, and the quality is superior. If you compare them to other outdoor

62 | exterior design

stainless steel cabinets, Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens provides the most versatile design solutions. They have eight different door styles, and they powder coat in colors selected to match Brown Jordan furniture, but they frequently use special order colors requested by designers. It really is like dealing with a very, very high-end custom indoor cabinet company. Describe your must luxurious outdoor kitchen project. I’m working on a project in Rancho Santa Fe, and it’s going to be really cool. It’s an older home in a Santa Barbara style, and we’re trying to add some of that Santa Barbara look. We’re going to incorporate Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens cabinetry. The clients have just ordered all new furniture, and we picked the cabinets to go with it. They’re on five acres of luxurious, beautiful lawns and pool, and they want to look at the view while they’re entertaining. And we’re putting in everything: a Wolf 30-inch warming drawer, an Asko outdoor dishwasher, an outdoor sink and faucet, a 36-inch Wolf grill, an extra-large Big Green Egg, and a True glass door wine cellar and refrigerator. That’s an exciting project. What is your favorite aspect of Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens? It depends on where you are. I do beachfront

properties, and sometimes we pick a wood-grain finish that looks a little beachy, and a lot of times in Santa Barbara we’ll use a louvre door, especially if there are shutters on the house. Probably one of my favorites is the louvre door. But the most popular is their standard Key West style that looks like a shaker door. When I’m working on a project that’s a little more contemporary, I use the sea glass doors. There are a lot of different options. I can design from a rustic kitchen to a very clean-lined modern kitchen. And they have all the different finishes to do it. When I go to Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens, there’s something for everybody, whether you’re on the beach or at a farmhouse, or in ultramodern LA, or on a rooftop. It’s the one line of cabinets that has it all. □ exterior design | 63

PROSE

As any city dweller will attest, it can be a daunting task to find a luxurious patio, garden escape or grand deck for entertaining. Thus, when I first relocated to Chicago from Seattle, I was astonished to find rooſtop dining to be a quintessential part of the Chicago social scene. Looking to entertain, I began to collaborate with a talented group of designers to create elegant and elaborate dining settings on some of Chicago’s most notable rooſtops. In our creative

endeavors, one trend we found worked well was mixing dishware to create a new level of sophistication. In this setting by Josh Young Design House, each piece is created by hand, using a combination of stencils and decoupage. By layering different plates and accenting with Mitchell Black and Baigelman Glass, we add depth that is not typical of an outdoor dining experience. The result is a tablescape that perfectly complements the cityscape.—Rachel Daunais

DESIGNER NIKKI CHU BRINGS HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR TO OUTDOOR SPACES

VISION

BY JENNIFER BRINGLE

“And to think that this molten blob of glass is made

only of silica or sand, the most common material in the world, that can be transformed from a solid to a liquid to a solid just from fire. For me it’s the most mysterious and magical of all the inventions or materials that mankind has invented or discovered.” The NYBG show plays up Chihuly’s proclivity toward organic forms. pond. Fiery red glass spears shoot upward from a bed of logs, resembling flames, particularly at night when illuminated. Seeing these sculptures in an outdoor setting illustrates the power of art in transforming an exterior space. And while most clients won’t have a Chihuly in their backyard, outdoor-safe artworks can transform a space from everyday to extraordinary.

Lola—as

in “Her Royal Highness Lola”—named for Michael’s four-pound Brussels Griffon dog.

64 | exterior design

endeavors, one trend we found worked well was mixing dishware to create a new level of sophistication.
