Next-Level Learning

Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Courses

At Stevenson, you can learn at the highest levels through a wide range of courses like AP Computer Science, AP Art History, Comparative Government & Politics Honors, and Environmental Science Honors. These advanced classes will stretch your mind in subjects you feel passionate about. You’ll be expected to analyze information and arguments, develop and defend original ideas, and grow as a scholar. The next chapter of your education begins here.

Real-World Engagement

Our classrooms are even bigger than they appear. That’s because, in every subject, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the real world, where learning makes the leap from textbooks and theory to tangible experience.

A few places your Stevenson education will take you: the Sunflower Star Lab, the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Santa Cruz Shakespeare Festival, and Yosemite National Park. These trips are more than just fun; they’re opportunities to absorb different perspectives, contexts, and cultures. You can study coastal ecosystems while snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean, experience history while walking through 250-yearold Spanish missions, and practice conservation in the heart of a national park. At the end of every trip— whether it’s a few hours or a few days—you’ll come away with knowledge that can only come from real life.

Exceptional Experiences

New places, new projects, and new challenges— that’s where you learn the most.

Our signature experiential learning opportunities allow you to immerse yourself in something you’ve never done before— like building a boat, traveling to Japan, or a multiday hiking trip—so that you can learn even more about the world, and yourself.

At the end of the year, in Grades 9 through 11, you’ll participate in X-Term, a special two-week-long immersive program that allows you to focus exclusively on a topic you’re interested in. The learning is hands-on, and it can lead you to some unexpected places—from the summit of Mount Shasta to the heart of a glassblower’s studio. By taking on a different project every year, you’ll discover new passions and new ways to apply what you know.

As a Grade 10 student, you’ll want to participate in our Sophomore Wilderness Expedition (EXPO), a ten-day hiking and camping adventure where you and your classmates will learn to navigate trail maps and set up camp in California’s unparalleled wilderness. You’ll create lasting bonds with your cohort and learn about yourself, too, during “solo,” a signature part of the trip dedicated to self-reliance and self-reflection. Time and again, students say it’s the best and bravest thing they did at Stevenson.

ATWOOD

With easy access to walking trails, itʼs a great location for enjoying the outdoors.

TREASURE ISLAND

Known as “TI” on campus, itʼs named after Robert Louis Stevensonʼs most famous novel.

BARROWS

Standing proudly right by our main entrance, this is the newest dorm on campus.

This dorm honors Coach Clifford Wilson, a beloved former faculty member who encouraged students to “take the hard right over the easy wrong.”

Weekend Activities

Here’s some good news: We believe in the restorative power of weekends. Go at your own pace and have a quiet Saturday— hanging out with friends in the dorm common room, doing laundry, or spending some time at the beach. If you’re feeling more adventurous, there are plenty of options. Take the weekend shuttle* and watch a movie at the local theater, have lunch with your roommate in Carmel-by-the Sea, grab a new novel at the bookstore in Pacific Grove, or get your friends together and challenge yourselves at an escape room in Monterey. Every weekend, you’ll have the opportunity to plan your own fun or participate in school-sponsored activities like yoga in the Treasure Room, glow-in-the-dark pool parties, or outdoor movies in our amphitheater. Weekends are full of opportunities to feed your passions, enjoy our beautiful location, and build a life you love.

ATHLETICS & TEAM ACTIVITIES

EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN, TOO

Play for Life

It’s important to us that everyone builds a lifelong practice of physical activity and teamwork—and there are plenty of ways to do that beyond (or in addition to) interscholastic athletics. Take advantage of the great outdoors with surfing, rock climbing, and hiking. Collaborate to achieve something amazing in team activities like theater, theater tech, Model UN, robotics, Mock Trial, and more. Above all, we want you to find something you love to do for the rest of your life.

One of the best things about Stevenson’s approach to athletics and activities is that you can always try—and learn—something new. Here are a few trivia questions about our activities to get your brain warmed up:

1. How many players are in the pool during a water polo match?

2. What’s the Sanskrit word for a yoga pose?

3. What is America’s oldest team sport?

4. What spooky nickname is given to the lamp that’s left lit on a theater’s dark stage?

5. How long is the shot clock for girls’ basketball?

My time at Stevenson has been incredible—and I can’t believe how much I’ve grown. My mind and spirit feel so __________________and_________________. Of course, I couldn’t have done it without the Stevenson community. From the moment I stepped onto Stevenson’s beautiful campus, I was welcomed by people who valued _________________ and exploring the world around them, especially the _____________________. The ____________________faculty and __________________ student body challenged me to excel academically, while my co-curricular activities allowed me to delve into my passion for ___________________. One memory I’ll always keep with me was participating in ___________________ and ____________________ almost every day. At Stevenson, I learned how to _____________________ and met friends who I know will cheer me on for the rest of my life. But most of all, Stevenson’s emphasis on critical thinking, excellence, and ____________________ made me who I am today, and this incredible experience makes me ____________________ for what comes next.
