Letter From Our Chairman I am honored to be serving as the new Chairman of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce for the upcoming 2016/17 term. I'm also very pleased with the makeup of our new board and look forward to working closely with them and the outstanding Chamber team under the stewardship of our exceptional President and CEO, Pam Ridler. Additionally, I would like to tip my hat to our past Chair, Elyse McNulty of Kaiser Permanente for her excellent leadership this past year and am so happy that she will still be a part of our Executive Board as Past Chair for this upcoming term.

Castle Rock has been an award winning community on many levels in the past few years and its successes can be traced to the work and collaboration between the Town of Castle Rock, The Economic Development Council (EDC), the Downtown Merchants Association (DMA) and the Chamber itself. We have all worked hard to maintain the small town charm through family friendly events and smart development; and, though the town is nationally recognized, not all are happy with some of the progress we've made. So, the Chamber has been in the process of stepping up our "Mission Goals".

Our Mission: Support and promote member businesses. Like you, other members have made an investment into their community by joining and participating in chamber activities and programs and they need to be rewarded through business with members; so, please take the time to use and promote chamber member companies. Chamber First!

Be a "voice" to government. We've expanded the Government Interests Committee to take on some of the challenges in the community. Disseminating factual information through publications, our website and the new "Horizon Luncheon" series lets us be heard by government, Castle Rock residents & business owners.

Foster a livable community with positive growth . We've accepted the challenge of maintaining Castle Rock's charm through various events and programs that allow our membership to interact with our residents.

It's this charm that continues to attract new businesses and residents to Castle Rock thereby providing us with goods and services that were previously unavailable in our area.

Yes, this is her real name and no, she is not related. She was named after aviatrix Amelia Mary Earhart and www.CastleRock.org has followed in her footsteps, completing a flight around the globe in 2014. Her family shares the same last name as the famous flyer and she feels fortunate to be named after a bold, courageous woman who has inspired so many parts of her life!

In 2014, Amelia departed on a flight around the world, to complete her lifelong goal of recreating her namesake’s monumental journey. She flew a Pilatus PC12NG with co-pilot Shane Jordan along a 28,000-mile course, landing in sixteen different countries, over the course of eighteen days. Amelia became one of the youngest women in the world to complete this flight. Amelia is the president of the Fly With Amelia Foundation, a Colorado based non-profit organization which provides flight training scholarships to young women across the U.S. Amelia now works with multiple aviation organizations to support advancement of the aviation industry and to promote women in aviation.

When not on the air at 9NEWS, Amelia flies on a regular basis out of Centennial Airport, recently obtaining her commercial license in a Cessna 182RG. She is currently writing a book about her experience flying around the world. Come join us and be inspired! Tickets at: www.CastleRock.org.

Everyone Loves A Parade!

The parade, which originated in 1954 and has long since become a staple of the summer’s liveliest weekend that salutes the western heritage of our town and celebrates the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo’s public events.

The 2016 Fair Parade is commencing at 9 a.m. Aug. 6 in downtown Castle Rock. Make sure to get downtown early and grab a spot along the parade route, so you can start your Saturday right, watching local celebrities, high school bands, athletes, firefighters and more wind their way through town.

Everyone is welcome to stop by the fire station after the parade to enjoy some BBQ. All proceeds from BBQ sales will benefit the Douglas County High School Quarterback Club.

The Douglas County Fair and Rodeo continues to be a family tradition for the residents of Douglas County, Colorado.

Ambassador of the Month The Castle Rock Chamber honors Joe Blakely as our May Ambassador of the Month. In addition to this honor, Joe was recently recognized as our Ambassador of the Year for 2015.

Joe Blakely became an ambassador with the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce in 2014 and has really enjoyed the additional opportunities it gives him to connect with the community and meet new people. Being an ambassador at the Chamber also allows Joe to be an ambassador for Kaiser Permanente in the community. This is important, because many people still don't realize they can purchase Kaiser Permanente coverage as an individual and don't have to get it through an employer. Now that Kaiser Permanente has a medical office in Castle Rock and their Specialty office in Lone Tree, Kaiser Permanente is more convenient than ever.

When Joe and his wife Angie moved to Castle Rock in 1988, he knew the town was very special and wanted to become more involved in the community.

He had a health insurance agency in town for many years and was a member of the Chamber because of the opportunities it gave him to meet people he could help with their health insurance needs.

Joe concludes by saying, “I am truly honored to be Ambassador of the Year because I know everyone on the team works so hard to make the Castle Rock Chamber a better value for our members. They are an amazing group of individuals and everyone of them deserves this recognition. I look forward to seeing you at a Chamber event in the near future.�

Castle Rock Senior Center

June Business of the Month The Castle Rock Chamber proudly honors Castle Rock Senior Center as our June Business of the Month recipient. They have been members of the chamber for nearly twenty three years.

Boomers are aging and rapidly expanding the senior population, while at the same time redefining what it means to be a senior, with their vitality for life. The Castle Rock Senior Activity Center, a 45 year old 501(c)3 non-profit organization of 900+ members, is poised to respond to these changes. From its humble beginnings as a social club, the Senior Center has grown into a vibrant organization continually increasing services to meet the needs of this very diverse demographic. Senior Center members range from the 50’s to the 90’s, with most living in their own homes or with family members. The Center helps them “age in place,” living independent and fulfilled lives with the motto of “loving life in the second half.”

With a fleet of vehicles and a team of dedicated volunteers, the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center provides the principal means of transportation for hundreds of seniors and disabled adults; more than 750 rides are provided monthly.

About 140 activities take place each month. Programming is diverse, ranging from sports leagues and card games to special interest groups, theater outings and even “bucket list” trips. Members may gather for meals or programs to learn something new, but leave with memories of the laughs shared with friends. Services include wellness programs like foot clinics, massages and disease prevention classes.

Brett Turner is a Colorado native, and he has lived in Castle Rock for 20 yrs along with his wife Sue and son Steve, who are also active in their marketing and branding business, 180 Branding. The family moved to Castle Rock just before the town exploded with record growth. At the time, the town was starting to grow at an accelerated rate. Brett believes that after 20 years, he is sure that the move to Castle Rock has been one of the “best decisions” of their lives. The family cherishes the sense of community that Castle Rock has along with its “small town feel”. Brett and his wife joined the Castle Rock Chamber shortly after starting their promotional products and apparel business back in 2008 and now they’re a full marketing and branding agency without agency fees. By not charging upfront fees is part of what sets their business apart from other marketing agencies. Brett joined the Ambassador program with the chamber in 2013 and Brett said that being a member of the Castle Rock Chamber has resulted in many strong new relationships with other like minded business owners. Many of these people are leaders who make a positive impact in our community. It wasn’t long ago that Brett would only get to read about these people in the news and now he feels fortunate to interact with them during community functions, volunteering for events or networking after hours.

Many of these people have become our dear friends.

Funding comes from grants, dues, donations and fundraising events like the annual Craft Show the 1st Saturday in November at the Douglas County Events Center and the annual Golf Tournament, this year at the Air Force Academy on September 1st. A Board of Directors and small staff oversee operations, with more than 300 volunteers making the place run and organizing outings and activities, putting in more than 33,000 hours a year. Every senior can find their niche and place to belong in the inclusive atmosphere.

Douglas County Business Alliance Ballot Forum August 16th Time: 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM Marriott Denver South The Douglas County Business Alliance (DCBA) is an unincorporated organization consisting of 2 or more members joined by mutual consent for a common, lawful nonprofit purpose pursuant to the “Uniform Unincorporated Nonprofit Association Act” as adopted by the state of Colorado under C.R.S. 7-30-101 and as may be amended. As such, DCBA is considered a nonprofit association.

The Douglas County Business Alliance is comprised of representatives from the following organizations: • Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce • Castle Rock Economic Development Council • Highlands Ranch Chamber of Commerce • Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce • Northwest Douglas County Economic Development Commission • Parker Chamber of Commerce • South Metro Denver Chamber

PURPOSE The DCBA has been established to promote a unified effort of certain Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development Councils of Douglas County to lead and influence state and federal policy, legislation and regulation to create and/or enhance a positive business climate for the business community of Douglas County.

Douglas County Community Foundation (DCCF), a nonprofit committed to proving leadership and responsible stewardship of philanthropic resources to enhance the quality of life in Douglas County, Colorado announced two new additions to its Board of Directors. Bret Feldman recently relocated to the Colorado area, taking a new position within Charles Schwab & Co. in Lone Tree.

He currently is a Managing Director within Advisor Services’ Advisor Custody Bret Feldman & Trading (ACT) department and is responsible for the Denver site RIA service teams as well as the Core service teams in Phoenix, Orlando, and Denver.

Amy Sherman is the President of the Northwest Douglas County Economic Development Corporation, an organization she helped create in November 2011.

The organization Amy Sherman is focused on infrastructure improvements, public policy, and marketing of the region as a premier place to locate or expand a business. Sherman currently serves on the Chamber of Commerce Highlands Ranch and Roxborough Business Association Board of Directors, is the Chair of the Douglas County Energy Coalition and the Douglas County Business Alliance and serves on the Douglas County Educational Foundation.

Feldman and Sherman join current DCCF Board Members: Chairwoman Donna Scott (Scott & Assoc.), Vice Chairman Susan Squyer (City of Lone Tree Council Member), Secretary Teresa Friess (Merrill Lynch), Treasurer Pam Ridler (Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce), Board Member Pam Jenkins (Present Value Consulting, LLC), and Board Member Mary Niblack (Nibco Partners Inc.).

Town’s New Summer Event Series Downtown After 5 - come relax Downtown as select Fridays come alive from 5 to 8 p.m. Enjoy live music, craft beer, cocktails and themed food trucks. Or, checkout work by local artisans, pick up specialty gifts, enjoy plein air painting, and more.

The Rocky Mountain Sports Festival - a custom sports festival created especially for Castle Rock. Compete in a sporting tournament like swimming, soccer, cycling or equine. Or, participate in an activity like disc golf or yoga. This tournament will have something for everyone. Not feeling athletic? Watch the tournaments on giant screens while enjoying live music, food and drinks at the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13.

Scavenge the Rock - Castle Rock has so many treasures to discover. Uncover new or forgotten places of our community with this competitive scavenger hunt from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, Downtown. Open to all ages. Participants can choose from several different hunts including highly active and family friendly versions.

Harvest Festival - a great pumpkin wall is the backdrop for this fall event from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 in Festival Park. More details to follow. Season of the Star this holiday-inspired event series will shine for the second year to help make the season in Castle Rock sparkle. Starting the weekend after Starlighting, these events will continue through New Year’s Eve. Watch for more information in the fall.

Who We Are Leadership Douglas County is designed to bring diverse people together to enhance their experiences, perspectives and take their personal and professional leadership journey to the next level.

Members of the 2016 Class of Leadership Douglas County (LDC) graduated on June 1, at The Millhouse, in Castle Rock.

Victory for Veterans Leadership Douglas County class of 2016 partners with local non-profit Leaving a legacy, through a significant class project, is the goal of each Leadership Douglas County (LDC) class. This year’s class chose to support Praying Hands Ranches. Their partnership with the organization helped to expand the “Victory for Veterans” program, serving those with combat-related incidents.

The class built a fence with accessible gates, along with garden planter boxes used in activities to help rehabilitate wounded veterans.

Most successful publications include a mix of content types to satisfy a wide range of tastes. Consider putting your most serious content on the front page, and your lighter content inside.

Leadership and social media collide The class became concerned prior to the workday, when, as sometimes happens, help from potential suppliers did not come through in time. Fundraising co -chair Bernie Greenberg, and other members of the class, feared that they might have an under-funded project with only days to go until construction. Enter local photographer, former Marine, and enthusiastic community supporter Nick Lucey. Lucey put out a call on social media explaining the need and, within minutes, people were responding to help support the project with comments like, “Appreciate it! We have to support our vets.” Lucey also donated 10% of all of his photography sales on Mother’s Day weekend toward the program. The goal of raising $1,000 for supplies was met and funds received over that amount went towards the Praying Hands Ranch organization. The quick response was overwhelming and a testimony to the caring community that is Douglas County.

Lucey put out a call on social media explaining the need and, within minutes, people were responding to help support the project with comments like, “Appreciate it! We have to support our vets.” Lucey also donated 10% of all of his photography sales on Mother’s Day weekend toward the program.

Founded by the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, and now entering its 18th year, LDC offers emerging and existing leaders in the county an experiential program to learn more about where they live and/or work, at a deeper level, in preparation for service to the community.
