25th Annual Colorado Artfest at Castle Rock The weekend after Labor Day, the Castle Rock Chamber hosts a juried fine arts show with artists from across the country. Delight in the artistic impressions of more than 170 artists from across the country.

Continual live main stage entertainment, featuring popular musicians, will provide a complimentary backdrop to this year’s program. We will also feature strolling entertainers, the Artfest Store; a silent auction; food and beverage vendors sure to tantalize your taste buds and an Imagination Zone for children.

With the growing need to be constantly connected, the Chamber h as recognized the importance of providing its members with the accessibility to our services while "on-the-go". This new app offers a number of new features, specifically created as a member ben efit, including a searchable, on-the-go member directory, a built in QR code reader, and member-to-member coupons. Never Stop Learning with On-line Trainings. We understand that our member businesses are operating in a fast-paced work environment and can’t always send every employee out for essential training. As part of our efforts to improve business r esources for our members, the Chamb er is now offering an online training web shop in addition to our current on-site training modules. Thanks to a partnership with Coggno.com, the premier Internet source for thousands of online training courses that businesses can access an ytime, anywhere. Now member businesses can utilize online courses to create a well-trained, knowledgeable workforce in an efficient, convenient and cost-effective manner; and courses can be accessed at computer workstations, as w ell as from home computers, tablets and even smart phones. All that’s need ed is an Internet connection and a desire to learn. The new online trainings will offer over 1,000 options to our local employers with the convenience of expanding their knowledge at the office or at home. Outstanding Ambassadors Recognized Betty Graf moved to Castle Rock six years ago and loves it here! She grew up in small towns in Kansas and loves the fact that Castle Rock has that same small town feel. Chamber assists to clarify Special Election Ballot Language For the pas t few months, the Cas tle Rock Cha mber’s Government Issues Commi ttee (GIC) has moni tored, researched and dis cussed the upcoming Special Election, Referendum A and B. Residents will be recei ving thei r ballots in the mail after Jul y 28th. Al though the Cha mber did not ta ke a posi tion on this ini tiati ve, we feel i t necessary to assist in the clari fi cati on for voters to make informed decisions. This election is not an election to decide i f Open Ca rry is to be allowed in Cas tle Rock, but an election to decide who should ha ve the authori ty to res tri ct open ca rry in public muni cipal properties . You will see below the ballot language and further explanati on to the meaning from the Town in Blue. The GIC has expa nded on the cla rifi ca tion in Red. A. REFERENDUM ON ORDINANCE NO. 2014-03 will read: SHALL TOWN COUNCIL ORDINANCE 2014-03 BE APPROVED WHICH ORDINANCE REVOKES THE AUTHORITY OF THE TOWN MANAGER UNDER THE MUNICIPAL CODE TO PROHIBIT THE OPEN CARRYING OF FIREARMS WITHIN MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS, PARKS, RECREATION AREAS AND OTHER MUNICIPAL PROPERTIES OWNED OR OPERATED BY THE TOWN OF CASTLE ROCK? Celebrate the charm of an oldfashioned Fair Parade in downtown Castle Rock, brought to you by the Castle Rock Chamber in partnership with the Town of Castle Rock. Parade starts on the south end of Town, followed by the traditional BBQ to benefit the Douglas County High School Huskies at the Castle Rock Fire Department at 300 N. Perry Street.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) WANTED: TEENS WHO MEAN BUSINESS This fall, middle and high school students who mean business will have an opportunity to start and launch their own real companies as part of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or YEA! Introduced to Colorado two years ago by the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, and now in its third year, throughout this exciting, projects-based program students will meet with local business moguls, generate real business ideas, pitch their business plans in front of investors, and launch their very own real, legal, profitable businesses.

The 30-week enrichment program takes place on the campus of Castle View High School and is open to all Douglas County School District middle and high school students who may not have their million dollar idea yet, but are excited about creating their own business. Students may also decide to start a business or social movement with a partner.

YEA! is accepting applications for next year’s class, which runs during the academic year from October to May with classes meeting once a week for three hours. Students enjoy field trips, pizza parties and interactive sessions, as they pursue their passion. Students may even apply for academic credit from eDCSD for participating in the program.

Interested students should mention this article to take advantage of a special discount off registration.

YEA! will be present at a number of upcoming events to provide additional information in more detail to interested students and their parents. Please note that applications will be accepted until the class is full.

Community Events Bicyclists light up East Plum Creek Trail at Ped al the Moon Aug. 9 - Where the fun is as full as the moon! Bicyclists of all ages are invited to light up their bikes and join the fifth annual Pedal the Moon bike ride Saturday, Aug. 9.

Cyclists should meet at 8 p.m. at the Butterfield Crossing Park picnic pavilion. At 8:30 p.m., participants will begin their 6-mile ride. Under the light of a full moon, the ride will take bikers along East Plum Creek Trail to Festival Park in Downtown Castle Rock. David Weaver appointed to fill Douglas County Commissioner, District I vacancy—David A. Weaver today was appointed by the Douglas County Republican Party Vacancy Committee to serve the remaining term created by the resignation of former Douglas County Commissioner, Jack Hilbert, who vacated his seat effective July 13, approximately six months before the conclusion of his second and final term in office. Weaver was immediately sworn into the office following today’s appointment. Read more: http:// w ww. c a stl er oc k. org / chamber_news10.htm Tony Spurlock Appointed Sheriff of Douglas County—Undersheriff Tony Spurlock was unanimously appointed as the 33rd Sheriff of Douglas County by the Board of County Commissioners to fill the recent vacancy left by former Sheriff David A. Weaver. Earlier this week, Weaver w as appointed to the Board of County Commissioners, filling the vacancy created by the departure of Commissioner Jack Hilbert. Former Sheriff Weaver said he is relieved to know that DCSO is being left in Spurlock’s capable hands.

Get behind the scenes of police and fire during National Night Out—If you’re wondering how police train their K-9 dogs, or how detectives investigate crimes, join Castle Rock Police Aug. 5, for the annual National Night Out. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the White Pavilion near Fourth and Perry streets. It will include a K-9 demonstration, a chance to learn about the various police divisions like SWAT and investigations, tours of police and fire vehicles, free hotdogs and hamburgers, and much more.
