Harper’s Bazaar UK editor Casey Colbeck discusses the impact that the 2000s left on us all, through fashion, music and pop culture.
Lately, a lot of us at Bazaar have noticed certain trends starting to pop back up that were relevant in the early 2000s, such as denim on denim, plaid skirts and corsets. This has led us to believe that the 2000s are making a return to the industry. So this issue is going to take you back to the 00s to relive the iconic trends we all grew up on and experienced. This throwback issue may just influence you to go back to them low rise jeans we all know and love.

Vintage fashion had an impact on all of us during our pre-teen fashionista stage. For many of us it was a way to express ourselves. The 2000s was an iconic year for creating new trends and owning your own style. The best part about these trends was how colourful and fun they all were. Now 20 years later these brands who made the 2000s are coming back better than ever. Even though many of us have grown since the 2000s there is a brand in this article for everyone to love. Brands you know and love such as Von Dutch, Crocs, diesel and Juicy Couture have all brought back the Y2K feels giving fashion its spotlight back and helping people express themseleves.
VonDutch is one of the first brands making a comeback that springs to mind. These high end baseball caps priced between $60-$100 have taken back their title selling in multiple stores such as Urban outfitters and ASOS, making them available to anyone who is interested in buying one. The Von Dutch hats are known for their weird and wonderful colour ranges and a personal favourite is the pink hat with the purple badge.
THE VINTAGE FASHION BRANDS MAKING A COMEBACK
Thecomeback of crocs has been a worldwide success. Everyone and their friends own a pair of them whether they been tie dye or platform. Crocs can be rocked with any atire. so many people run errands in crocs and go to work in crocs. Many health care workers choose this as their go to work shoe as it is comfy and practical. Since the rise of Crocs they have released the fliffy crocs. This means that even in winter you can wear your crocs as shoes or as slippers. Everybody needs a pair as theyre a staple item in any waredrobe.
Diesel now a days was only known for their mens aftershave range, prior to their reighning clothing line in the early 2000s. However, many items of clothing from diesel have been popping up around social media leading to their comback. Diesels clothing is pricey however it is worth it for what you are buying. Diesel offers some basic staple pieces as well as some amazing unique ones. Some may have seen the diesel shoulder bag trending right now and its the perfect item for if you dont want to carry around a big bag all day.
Juicy couture was a major brand in the 2000s with many celebrities seen wearing their famous velour tracksuits, we just couldnt not mention them. Even though the brand is pretty much still the same they have some amazing new items of clothing and their tracksuits have been taken to a whole new level, with many different colours and designs. Nothing screams vintage more than Juicy Couture does. The brand made its comeback in 2020 and have kept up ever since.
Interview with an ex burberry seamstress
Samantha Colbeck, 49 from castleford was a Burberry seamstress in the roaring ninties. This interview will show inside the beloved Burberry brand and what it takes to be a seamstress for this high end brand. Burberry was founded in in 1856 and is still now one of the most authentic brands around. Samantha gives us an insight into her daily life as a seamstress and how it felt working for one of the most popular brands around. The “castleford Burberry factory” was where she was based when she started her career. samantha stated she has “learnt many skills from the job, some that i have carried on through to my everyday life”, she listed a few skills she has carried on through her life such as “ i still own a sewing machine and im the go to person when my family need alterations on their clothes”. I asked Samantha what her favourite part of the job was seen as she worked there for over 10 years, “i loved how many friends i made at that job, i still am in contact with them now”. The castleford Burberry factory is still there and still up and running. i wanted to know what the brand itself were like and how it has evolved since she worked there. she told me “when i first started it was all about the classic burberry trenchcoat, i would sew the tags into them before they were sent off to the shops, i feel like the Burberry trench coat is still their top seller but they have lots of new items now that werent there at the time like the hoodies and the more casual stuff”. i asked Samantha if she still wears burberry or would buy from there, she said “i still have a few items of clothing from there as i would be able to buy the ‘faulty’ items for cheaper than the shop price”. i loved conducting this interview with Samantha, she seemed really passionate about the job and said she would have gone back if it wasnt for her children. Burberry seems like the best place to work wwith friendly staff and a great work environment, it makes you want to buy from their store even more.

Flared jeans were the statement piece of the 2000s, they were the basics in every waredrobe, and they still are. Flares jeans and jersey flares go with absolutely everything. This is a trend you wont regret participating in, it can upstage your waredrobe from skinny jeans to chic. 5
Skunk hair was the most popular hair style in the 2000s, celebrities like Christina Agulera showcased this look. this trend was unique and definitely a fan favourite. We would love nothing more than to see the return of this iconic hair style, maybe this is the reference photo for your next trip to the salon.
Low rise jeans and a crop top was a very daring trend, some of us loved and some of us hated it. This trend still very much around to this day and we arent mad, its the perfect outfit.

Mini skirts are another one of the best trends of the 2000s, so much that we still wear them. a mini skirt is the go to outfit for any occasion. at least one person on the red carpets in the 2000s would be wearing a mini skirt.
The newsboy hats had everyone in a chokehold, they would be paired with every outfit in different colours. nothing screams the years 2000 more than this does. This had would be seen everywhere even on the red carpets. It was casual but very stylish.
Denim was worn by everyone in the 2000s, whether it was a denim skirt, denim jeans, a denim dress or even denim on denim. even though it isnt the most comfotable item to wear it can definitely add those basic staples to your wardrobe and can even be worn for work.

Britney Spears most iconic looks
Britney spears was known for her outgoing, eye catching looks, on the stage and off the stage. Lets take a deep dive into her most iconic looks over the years.
Britney wore this hot pink bandeau with the matching kneepads during her baby one more time tour in california 1999(vogue, 2020). In this she styles her well known ponytails like she did in the original music video for baby one more time. This look showed off the singers amazing fashion sense courtesy of her stylist.
This Britney red carpet look from the 2000s really gave the Marylin Monroe vibes. The Hollywood Glamour had everyone turning their heads. This was hands down the best red carpet look we saw from Britney.
This Britney look was from the Ooops I Did It Again! music video released in the year 2000. This costume is one of her most well known looks from that year. Micheal Bush was the costume designer, as he was for all of her tour outfits at the time (Vogue, 2020). The latex cat suit was made overnight, and even faster than that became an iconic look. You can see this look nowadays worn by people on halloween or at fancy dress parties. When you think Britney Spears you think of this outift.
The ‘slave for you’ performance at the 2001 VMAs gave everyone something to talk about. the live snake featured in the act added to the exotic look of the tiny shorts and crop top, all the colours she is wearing gave off the brazillian vibes. this performance went down in the history books for Spears.

An Insight Into The Past
Founded in 1867, Our magazine was one of the first fashion publications for women. Fletcher Harper the founder was very fond on expressing her politics views through the use of the magazine. Harpers Bazaar regularly ran articles on the importance of women working and education for women. the publications always supported the womens suffrage efforts (Harpersbazaar, 2016). Thankfully, all of Harpers politic views came to light in modern day. Im sure she would have been happy to see it.
Harpers Bazaar never just focussed on the clothes they were also writing about cashmeres, spices, perfumes, silks and gems. Fahion to them was anything that could “comfort the heart and delight the eye”. There was articles on fiction, poetry, family and work. this magazine wasnt just for the materialistic women of the 20th century it was for all the women who wanted their own independance and a voice for themselves.

The cover doesnt include any photography just a drawing of a woman. Bazaar has come a long way since these days and have followed the womens rights movement till this very day.
This is the latest cover of the Harpers Bazaar editorial magazine, April 2023. Featuring Keira Knightley. she talks about the strength of women, this shows all Harpers Bazaar has ever focussed on in the rights of women and the empowerment of them. (Issuemagshop, 2023)
