There are few places where the Independence celebrations cut as deep as in San Miguel de Allende and surrounding cities; Dolores Hidalgo and Querétaro. “The cradle of Independence” as its commonly referred, celebrates the national holiday with traditions that have been going on for decades. You can see how the streets begin boasting decorations on red, green and white all over, and light installations commemorate the heroes of Independence.

Alberto Lenz is certainly one of the ‘faces of San Miguel’ many people have had the chance to collaborate with in various private and civic associations. He is an architect, painter, sculptor, jewelry designer and cultural manager. He is also a previous director of Ignacio Ramirez El Nigromante Cultural Center (Bellas Artes on Hernandez Macias street) where he dedicated himself to promoting and supporting culture in the city. Born in Mexico City, he has been a fulltime San Miguel resident for over a decade.

“In my design process across all mediums I explore both contemporary and ancient geometric shapes, including the use of logical-rational systems, particularly linked to game theory and chance,” said Lenz. He was selected to participate in the VIII FEMSA Monterrey Bien-

nial, one of the most renowned contemporary art exhibitions in Mexico and has participated in many national shows and festivals such as the International Cervantino Festival in the city of Guanajuato.

Lenz studied architecture at Universidad Anahuac and urban planning at UNAM, then spent some time in Europe, immersing himself in art, architecture and design. Afterwards, he returned to Mexico to study regional development at El Colegio de Mexico. His works often enrich urban spaces, such as the ‘Wind Towers’ large sculptures installed in various housing developments of Queretaro.

“After finishing my work in charge of El Nigromante, I decided to make San Miguel my permanent place of work and residence, attracted, of course, by the physical beauty of the city and its surroundings. In fact, I have my house and studio on the outskirts of the city, in the countryside, where I live surrounded by a still very virgin natural environment, characteristic of the Mexican semi-desert,” said Lenz.

“There is no doubt that the city itself, a mixture of the indigenous cultures of the region with the viceregal Spanish culture, represents a very rich setting for an artist, due to its shapes, textures, colors and even its smells. So much so that I have been working on a set of

paintings and sculptures grouped under the name ‘San Miguel Series’ for several months now. And lastly, for me, the other very important characteristics of San Miguel, which might be the most important, are its libertarian soul and its open and cosmopolitan spirit. People of many nationalities live here, largely united by the search for the spiritual above the material.”

Monterrey, una de las exposiciones de arte contem poráneo más re nombradas de México, y ha par ticipado en nu merosas mues tras y festivales, como el Festival Internacional Cervantino.

Alberto Lenz es sin duda uno de los "rostros de San Miguel" con los que muchos han tenido ocasión de colaborar en diversas asociaciones privadas y cívicas. Es arquitecto, pintor, escultor, diseñador de joyas y gestor cultural. También fue director del Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez El Nigromante (Bellas Artes en la calle de Hernández Macías) donde se dedicó a promover y apoyar la cultura en la ciudad. Nacido en la Ciudad de México, reside en San Miguel desde hace más de una década.

"En mi proceso de diseño en todos los medios exploro formas geométricas tanto contemporáneas como antiguas, incluyendo el uso de sistemas lógico-racionales, particularmente ligados a la teoría del juego y el azar", dijo Lenz. Fue seleccionado para participar en la VIII Bienal FEMSA

Lenz estudió arquitectura en la Universidad Anáhuac y urbanismo en la UNAM, después pasó un tiempo en Europa, impregnándose de arte, arquitectura y diseño. Posteriormente regresó a México para estudiar desarrollo regional en El Colegio de México. Sus obras suelen enriquecer los espacios urbanos, como las grandes esculturas 'Torres de Viento', instaladas en varios fraccionamientos de Querétaro.

"Al terminar mi trabajo al frente de El Nigromante, decidí hacer de San Miguel mi lugar permanente de trabajo y residencia, atraído, por supuesto, por la belleza física de la ciudad y sus alrededores. De hecho, tengo mi casa y estudio en las afueras de la ciudad, en el campo, donde vivo rodeado de un entorno natural aún muy virgen, característico del semidesierto mexicano", comenta Lenz.

"No cabe duda de que la propia ciudad, mezcla de las culturas indígenas de la región con la virreinal española, representa un escenario muy rico para un artista, por sus formas, texturas, colores e incluso sus olores. Tanto es así que llevo varios meses trabajando en un conjunto de pinturas y esculturas agrupadas bajo el nombre de "Serie San Miguel". Y por último,

para mí, las otras características muy importantes de San Miguel, que quizá sean las más importantes, son su alma libertaria y su espíritu abierto y cosmopolita. Aquí vive gente de muchas nacionalidades, unidos en gran medida por la búsqueda de lo espiritual por encima de lo material."

On September 15th, the main celebration is El Grito, as is know commonly in México. It recreates the call to arms made by Miguel Hidalgo in 1810 to start the war against Spanish domination. Its is a festive night like no other: fireworks, lights, food. Everyone goes out and enjoys the lively ambiance in the streets or at private parties held at houses, restaurants and hotels.

The elaborate fireworks in front of the Parroquia are traditionally made by expert artisans from Uriangato and Comonfort. They bring the tall, intricate structures known as “castillos” - or castles - that light up at 11pm every 15th of September, The next day the city enjoys a Civic Parade at 11am through the streets of downtown and celebrations end at 6pm with the “Entrada de los Insurgentes” or Insurgents entrance, where a group of men riding horseback come from Dolores Hidalgo, to commemorate the ride made by the rebels on their way to Queretaro. The city’s government will release the official schedule for this years seasonal festivities on September 8th, so make sure you are ready to celebrate this special month!

El 15 de septiembre es El Grito, como se conoce comúnmente en México. Recrea la llamada a las armas de Miguel Hidalgo en 1810 para iniciar la guerra contra la dominación española. Es una noche festiva como ninguna otra: fuegos artificiales, luces, comida. Todo el mundo sale y disfruta del ambiente en las calles o en fiestas privadas celebradas en casas, restaurantes y hoteles.

Los elaborados fuegos artificiales frente a la Parroquia son fabricados tradicionalmente por expertos artesanos de Uriangato y Comonfort: altas y elaboradas estructuras conocidas como "castillos" que se encienden a las 11 de la noche cada 15 de septiembre, Al día siguiente la ciudad disfruta de un Desfile Cívico a las 11 de la mañana por las calles del centro y los festejos terminan a las 6 de la tarde con la "Entrada de los Insurgentes", donde un grupo de hombres a caballo llega de Dolores Hidalgo, para conmemorar la cabalgata que hicieron los rebeldes en su camino a Querétaro.

El gobierno de la ciudad dará a conocer el programa oficial de las festividades el 8 de septiembre, ¡así que prepárate para celebrar este mes tan especial!

ART ON the Streets ARTE EN las Calles

Back in the 1960's, graffiti emerged along with the beginnings of the hip hop movement in the US. Letters and words in aerosol paint became more and more elaborate over time, especially with the blasts of colorful and edgy wild style. Images were added in the 1980s, then becoming known as street art or urban art. By 2000, street art exploded world-wide and became the fastest growing art movement in history.

Street art was not permitted in San Miguel de Allende before 2013. When a mural was painted on the street, even with permission from the property owner, Desarrollo Urbano was sure to pay a visit to inform it must be immediately painted over. Permission for legal painting on the street was finally secured in 2013 with the first Muros en Blanco festival in Colonia Guadalupe, continuing until 2020 with multiple paintings every January and June by local, national and international artists.

More projects continued over ten years, in the many barrios outside El Centro, with the participation of numerous local and visiting artists. Street art is not permitted in El Centro because of UNESCO and World Heritage rules. The only exception was a 2014 mural by Argentinian artist Kobra, on the wall of Hotel Matilda for 30 days with a special event permit.

The global phenomenon of street art often creates awareness about current social and environmental issues, conveying a message to encourage discussion and reaction. Street art also attracts visitors, generating

economic benefits to a community. Recently, local artists have become more and more sought after for paid commissions in restaurants and cafes, shops, hotels and private homes and gardens. All aspects of the street art movement in San Miguel have been documented - murals, artists, projects, changing neighborhoods, positive and negative attitudes, and effects on tourism with national and international visitors. Each month, through personal interviews, we will get to know the many artists - local, national and international - who have offered their immense talents with murals all around San Miguel de Allende since 2013. They will offer explanation of their work and their thoughts about art on the streets.

En la década de 1960, el graffiti surgió junto con los inicios del movimiento hip hop en Estados Unidos. Las letras y palabras en pintura de aerosol se hicieron más y más elaboradas con el tiempo, especialmente con las explosiones de colorido y estilo salvaje. En la década de 1980 se añadieron imágenes, que pasaron a denominarse arte callejero o arte urbano. En 2000, el arte callejero explotó en todo el mundo y se convirtió en el movimiento artístico de más rápido crecimiento de la historia.

Real Estate sales in San Miguel de Allende are growing more than ever! In the past we have had a majority of our clients coming from the US, but recently our client base has expanded to include Canadians. The other sector which has grown is the under 50 age group looking to grow their family in a great environment.

Home listings are moving quickly, as well as rentals. The beautiful climate, friendly people and low cost of living is an ever-enticing draw for people looking for a new home on a permanent basis, or perhaps as a rental investment.

The building industry is also growing, with approximately 4000-5000 houses being built and sold at the moment. This is giving clients a large inventory to select from, but it is not satisfying the overall demand, especially for individual stand-alone homes. San Miguel also continues to draw from the National market, as Mexicans coming from other cities who come here enjoy holidays and weekend celebrations begin to seek homes. There is always something good happening in the main square and colonias (neighborhoods), with weekends bringing exciting and magical festivals, fireworks, parades and blessings.

WHY IS ¿PORQUÉ San Miguel... de Allende?

Many cities are named San Miguel, not only in Mexico, but in other countries, including the United States. But there is only one San Miguel de Allende, the city “of” Allende; amid mountains, in central Mexico, in the state of Guanajuato. The question is, why the latter part of the name?

When the town was established in 1542, it was simply San Miguel. A small mission some four miles from the current city center, on fertile fields by the river Laja, it was founded by Juan de San Miguel—a Franciscan friar. Like many other friars, he came after Cortez defeated the Aztec chief, Moctezuma in 1521. They made their way through the conquered lands, converting the natives to Christianity. Most of the indigenous people were accepting of the new religious order, and incorporated the beliefs into their own pantheon. They built houses around the mission, attended mass, and learned new skills taught by the friars. But the Chichimeca tribes—unhappy with the invaders, fought bitterly to drive them away. Their attacks caused the fledgling mission to move to the area of El Chorro, more protected because of the steep terrain. The town was renamed San Miguel de los Chichimecas. Then, in 1555 it was moved once again to where the city is today. By this time it had become a town under the auspices of the viceroy, the representative for the king of Spain, known as San Miguel el Grande as it grew and prospered. But there was unrest. The wealthy Spaniards had all the power—economic and governmental—more than their own children, called Criollos, born on American

soil. The next centuries fomented their resentment at being second class citizens, and on September 16, 1810, the War of Independence began on the streets of San Miguel, led by native born son— Ignacio Allende. He did not see the eventual liberation of Mexico in 1821, because he was captured and executed nine month after the start of the War. But his memory was forever honored in 1826 when the city was renamed after him: San Miguel de Allende. The house where Allende was born still stands on the street called Cuna (cradle) de Allende. It is a museum worth visiting to find out more about the city and its history.

Muchas ciudades se llaman San Miguel, no sólo en México, sino en otros países, incluido Estados Unidos. Pero sólo hay un San Miguel de Allende, la ciudad "de" Allende; entre montañas, en el centro de México, en el estado de Guanajuato. La pregunta es: ¿por qué esta última parte del nombre? Cuando se fundó la ciudad en 1542, era simplemente San Miguel. A season to enjoy Chile en Nogada

The history of Mexico explored through traditional Mexican dishes is insightful. A favorite dish is Chile en Nogada (pronounced new-ga-tha) and it is wonderful as autumn approaches.

Often referred to as the National Dish of Mexico, Chile en Nogada first appeared in 1821, during the signing of the treaty declaring Mexico's Independence from Spain. Nuns from the convent of Santa Monica created Chile en Nogada as a tribute and styled it to look like the Mexican flag. The poblano pepper is a bold green with mild heat, while the nogada (walnut) sauce is a

creamy white with pomegranate seeds providing ruby jewels of tastiness – green, white, and red like the Mexico flag. Inside the poblano is a rich picadillo created with meat, dried fruits, and nuts.

Often the chiles are rolled in cornmeal and deep fried before the sauce is generously applied. In our culinary environment today, the dish has many new twists but always keeps the colors of the Mexican flag at its forefront. My personal recipe for Chile en Nogada is on the ExperienceSMA.com website. Be forewarned - the dish requires a daunting two-day preparation, and contains extensive ingredients. Years ago, I served my updated version at a dinner party with

friends. I prefer to bake the chiles with cornbread coating and drizzle with oil in the air fryer. Additionally, I take liberty by adding a trinity of cheeses with the picadillo. To my delight, one of the guests commented it was better than his grandmother's - to which I replied, “Thank you! But please never tell her."

The traditional season for creating Chile en Nogada is August through October as temperatures have cooled, and the pomegranates are the ripest.

Una temporada para disfrutar del Chile en Nogada

La historia de México explorada a través de los platos tradicionales mexicanos es perspicaz. Uno de los platos favoritos es el Chile en Nogada, que resulta maravilloso cuando se acerca el otoño.

A menudo conocido como el Plato Nacional de México, el Chile en Nogada apareció por primera vez en 1821, durante la firma del tratado que declaraba la Independencia de México de España. Las monjas del convento de Santa Mónica crearon el Chile en Nogada como homenaje y le dieron el aspecto de la bandera de México. Beginners to advance Grand Prix riders will gather from across the nation competing for a portion of the $400,000 peso purse offered by LME. Viñedos San Francisco has become a renowned equestrian center with riding arena, polo field and jumping court located in the middle of beautiful lands planted in vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields along avenues lined by majestic trees.

Observe harmony and partnership between horse and rider practicing ‘Dressage’, a sport whose roots can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans in training horses used for warfare. Today the practice of horse and rider in Dressage is recognized as a competitive sport and has been part of the summer Olympics for over 100 years.

Attend all or some of the Dressage riders’ competition during ‘Eventos Equestres’ San Miguel and you will see riders who have trained their dressage horses to demonstrate supple and flexible gaits and notice specific patterns requiring precision and accuracy. Patience, persistence, focus and concentration are hallmarks of horse and rider in this elegant sport. The two day event is taking place just around the corner from downtown off the road to Cineguita at the entrance to the Los Lopez area.

Observe la armonía y la asociación entre caballo y jinete practicando Doma Clásica o Dressage, un deporte cuyas raíces se remontan a antiguas civilizaciones como la griega y la romana en el adiestramiento de caballos utilizados para la guerra.

Hoy en día, la práctica de la doma entre caballo y jinete está reconocida como deporte de competición y forma parte de los Juegos Olímpicos de verano desde hace más de 100 años. Asista a todas o algunas de las competiciones de jinetes de Doma Clásica durante los Eventos Ecuestres de San Miguel y verá jinetes que han entrenado a sus caballos de doma para que demuestren aires flexibles y se fijen en patrones específicos que requieren precisión y exactitud.

Paciencia, persistencia, atención y concentración son las señas de identidad del caballo y el jinete en este elegante deporte. Amigos de Animales de San Miguel de Allende, AC was incorporated in October 2001, fully registered as a not-forprofit organization in Mexico. The founder was Arno K. Naumann, an animal lover and resident of San Miguel de Allende struck by the multitude of animals roaming the streets, at the mercy of traffic, the elements, and of course, human abuse. Profoundly moved, Arno concluded that there was only one ultimate solution to the plight of the animals wandering the streets, and that was sterilization.

In addition to sterilizations, Amigos de Animales has been instrumental in effecting significant

changes for the welfare of the domestic animals in the communities. Most importantly in the year 2002, an agreement prepared and presented by Amigos was signed with the Municipality, establishing that the only method allowed to euthanize the animals captured by Ecology or by any other means, is by lethal injection, preceded by total anesthesia. This replaced the inhumane method of electrocution used in the past!

Since its inception, Amigos de Animales has sterilized over 28,000 dogs and cats, averaging over 1,300 sterilizations annually. Amigos de Animales has established an important partnership with Guanajuato Health Ministry (SSG), whereby the ministry provides skilled veterinarians to perform the sterilization surgeries and Amigos de Animales helps support SSG with supplies and

This year 2023, Amigos de Animales has also doubled the number of smaller clinics it holds in the communities surrounding San Miguel, where the animal overpopulation problem is far more acute.

Amigos de Animales also works in the local public schools to teach children and their families about pet care, the animals’ need for love and the importance of dog and cat sterilization.

Lydia Lavín. La diseñadora Lydia Lavín creó su marca en 2005 y su propuesta es hacer moda mexicana contemporánea, realizando un trabajo en conjunto con el Instituto Indigenista para la preservación de técnicas textiles indígenas mexicanas con diversas comunidades y artesanos.

Conocí a Lydia Lavín hace dos años en una callejoneada en San Miguel de Allende. Las modelos, la diseñadora y las mojigangas caminaban y bailaban al unísono de la música del mariachi y del burro que las acompañaban. Las restricciones de la pandemia habían terminado y las calles de esta ciudad se llenaban de fiesta, moda y tradición.

Nos dirigíamos hacia el Hotel Rosewood, en donde nos esperaba la alfombra roja y posteriormente

la pasarela con modelos llenos de colorido y bordados espectaculares; era una de las presentaciones de Fashion Days. Disfruté mucho de esta colección, pero también me fascinó la pasarela que Lavín realizó frente a la Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel años atrás; ella siempre nos sorprende con su creatividad.
