Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival, cary

Celebrating its 49th year in 2025, the Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival is one of the top arts experiences in the country. The juried show draws artists from across the United States, along with 50,000 attendees over a two-day celebration of art and entertainment in downtown Cary.

“I like to call Lazy Daze a kaleidoscope of creativity,” says Jenna Kostka, festivals and events supervisor with the Town of Cary. “From our curated artist market featuring almost 300 vendors, to live performances on multiple stages, delicious food, and a continually changing array of interactive art experiences for all ages, Lazy Daze has something for everyone!”

Appropriately named, Lazy Daze takes place the last weekend of August — but attendees are happy to brave the heat for a chance to experience and engage with art in a multitude of ways.

“Unlike some art festivals where visitors are passive observers, Lazy Daze offers a truly interactive experience,” Jenna says. “Attendees can engage directly with artists, participate in hands-on activities, and gain insights into the creative process. This interactive element fosters a deeper and ongoing connection between the community and the arts.”

Its sister festival, Spring Daze, features exclusively North Carolina artists for a oneday event in Bond Park every April. carync.gov/lazydaze

Competitive barbecuing is gaining popularity throughout the country, and it’s especially hot in the Triangle. Organized by the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club, the Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest draws a mix of backyard hobbyists and nationally ranked teams for a smokin’ two-day competition event.

This mouthwatering celebration of barbecue and community features top pitmasters showcasing their best smoked meats alongside a variety of food vendors offering delicious sides and desserts. The 2025 fest had to forgo the competition element because of space constraints at a temporary location, but never fear: The heat will be on again in 2026.

Live music, cooking demonstrations, vendors, kids’ activities, and a Police versus Fire rib-eating contest make for a fun atmosphere for all. Craft beer is served in an onsite beer garden throughout the fest. Proceeds benefit various community charities via the Apex Sunrise Rotary Foundation.

engage the arts

During a visit to the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center, you never quite know what you might experience. One night brings a magic show by national touring performers, the next a gospel showcase made up of talented community choirs, followed by a toddler ballet class, art therapy, or urban sketching.

From the lobby, visitors can browse the rotating gallery of featured local artists or experience the Art-o-mat, an old cigarette machine refashioned into an art installation vending small-scale original works for only $5.

“There are always people coming and going. We get to see the joy that people have doing something they love, finding something that makes them excited,” says Maureen Daly, Arts Center director.

Providing a varied lineup of programs and shows is a high priority for Maureen and her team, to ensure that everyone in town finds opportunities to engage with the arts.

“We are always looking for those moments of surprise and delight. There’s nothing better than sharing that with others.”

Whether you’re learning a new instrument or just love to sing in the shower, open-mic nights provide a platform for you to develop your skills in a (generally) judgement-free environment. Ease into it by attending a few local open-mic nights as a spectator first to get the feel of the venue and crowd.

From Abbey Road Tavern and Grill in Cary to Niche Cocktail and Wine Lounge in Holly Springs to the Salem Street Music Club at Oaklyn Springs Apex, you have plenty of places in the Triangle to sing your heart out. Can’t carry a tune in a bucket? Don’t let that stop you. Aspiring comedians have open-mic opportunities, too! wax NOSTALGIC

In a fast-paced and “everything-at your-fingertips society,” Michael Bell asserts, “there is something really cool and nostalgic and peaceful, if you will, about that crackle, that hiss” when you play a record. It “forces you to slow down ... forces you to listen to something from start to finish.”

Michael opened Hunky Dory Cary, a relaxed recordshop-meets-hangout-space on East Chatham Street, in 2023, following in the footsteps of Durham and Raleigh locations. While the Cary shop is the smallest of the bunch, it packs a lot of personality in the cozy space in the form of mid-century furniture and unique accessories.

Collectors run the gamut, seeking everything from high-end jazz to first presses of Metallica to Taylor Swift. “I don’t turn my nose up,” Michael promises. “I try to get a huge variety.”

Craft beers on tap encourage lingering and conversation. “You have a beer, you enjoy the person sitting next to you, you have stories, you imbibe, and you get out on the floor and look for something cool,” Michael says. “It brings you in, and we hope to keep you there and enjoy stories and have fun.”

Fun is the first ingredient in all of Wynton’s World Cooking School classes. At the largest hands-on cooking school in the Triangle, Wynton’s World has something for every palate, with an impressive variety of classes that attract novice, beginner, seasoned, and even seasonal students.

Utilizing a competency-based approach, Wynton’s World employs first-rate area instructors — who all follow the 3 C’s of teaching: character, competence, and connection — and selects from the best materials and methods available, while making use of innovative technology where appropriate.

According to owner and lead chef Wynton Mann, “We want our students to learn new skills, have fun in the process, and to go home excited about cooking!” When considering its fivestar rating, and the fact that Wynton’s World has been offering

culinary education and experiences since 2012, their affordable and completely hands-on classes are cooking with heat.

And while the mission of Wynton’s World is to provide excellent instruction in all educational programs — which include parent and teen classes, summer camps for kids, and a teen culinary program — Wynton promises “an amazing experience with food and a lot of fun!”

The popular Date Night for Couples class is limited to just six couples per session. During these events, Wynton and his team get to witness first dates and marriage proposals, and — as with all of Wynton’s World offerings — participants can look forward to “meeting new friends and having a great time in an intimate setting.” The Dinner & Dance: Hot Salsa class even includes an hourlong dance class! wyntonsworld.com

It’s not just the coffee that brings people to Dupre’s Coffee & Company, a 1964 Shasta camper turned mobile coffee shop that opens on weekends in the parking lot of Century 21 Triangle Group’s Fuquay-Varina office.

As the name suggests, a friendly atmosphere is also served up at Dupre’s.

“We always try to be welcoming and truly value each person who comes here,” says Annet Dupre, who opened the business in 2024 with her husband, Jay.

“We genuinely care about them and want to hear about what’s happening in their lives,” Jay agrees. “People openly share personal news

with us like when they land a new job, get engaged to be married, or find out they are expecting a baby.”

When it comes to the java, Dupre’s signature roast comes from fourth-generation farmers in the lush, high-altitude Acatenango region of Guatemala. Fresh beans are delivered every week.

Dupre’s also offers chai, matcha, hot chocolate, hot tea, and popular iced refreshers, plus baked goods including cupcakes, scones, muffins, brownies, and more that Annet makes herself in a commercial kitchen in their home.

join the pickleball craze

Fuquay-Varina residents Joe and Kat Entwistle didn’t open Home Court Pickleball because they are pickleball experts. In fact, they consider themselves novice players. Instead, the husband-and-wife pair saw the potential that a welcoming indoor court had for creating fun opportunities for gathering, movement, and connection.

“It’s a place people can move together and play. The court has been rented for date nights, double dates, and girls’ nights out,” Kat says. “When you’re done, you’re right here in downtown and can head to The Mill or plenty of places in downtown Fuquay for dinner."

Home Court Pickleball occupies the back section of the Original Strength Institute in a recently renovated building on S. Main Street. Reservations are made online, and paddles and balls are provided (though you’re welcome to bring your own).

There’s a sound system to play music and even photo props to enhance your selfie moment in front of the court’s giant custom mural, painted by Fuquay resident Rachel Cornett.

Instructor-led clinics, lessons, and monthly socials all offer opportunities for organized pickleballing, or grab some friends or family members and make a private reservation. homecourtnc.com

25 Years of Koka Booth Amphitheatre

A new mural at Koka Booth Amphitheatre observes a major milestone for the Cary treasure, now celebrating its 25th season of concerts, fireworks, and unforgettable nights under the stars.

William Lewis, Cary’s cultural arts manager, introduces the colorful scene painted on the side of the amphitheater’s concession stand: “The mural tells the story of Koka Booth Amphitheatre, showing snapshots of special events and special performances. Look closely and you’ll see the dragon boat races at the Asia Fest, the Chinese Lantern Festival, Diwali, the Jazz Series, the North Carolina Symphony, and the natural beauty of this place.”

The Town of Cary commissioned Raleigh artist Sean Kernick to paint the mural, which stands 9 feet tall and stretches across 50 feet and took 75 hours to complete.

From the Beginning

The amphitheater has always been a place where nature meets culture, and where neighbors come together in the great outdoors to enjoy a sense of community and their favorite entertainers.

For Lyman Collins, who served as cultural arts manager for 20 years before retiring in 2019, it seems like yesterday that the Town of Cary created its own, then known as the Amphitheatre at Regency Park.

Built as the summer home for the North Carolina Symphony, the amphitheater sits on 14 wooded acres bordering Symphony Lake. Designed by Boston architectural firm William Rawn Associates, the venue accommodates 7,000 people between a covered VIP deck and a sprawling lawn that invites visitors to get comfortable on blankets and chairs.

Lyman remembers the terrible weather events and global tragedy that bookended the inaugural season in 2001.

As workers were putting the finishing touches on the new stage and grounds in early June, tornado warnings sent them scrambling for cover. The Cary News reported that the venue was flooded ankle deep. The torrential downpour washed away the newly sodded lawn.

“There was no way anyone could even get into the facility, so it was my job to stand at the entrance and explain to anyone who showed up why we were postponing the symphony,” Lyman recalls. “The following weekend was beautiful, and we were able to open the season.”

That first night, then-music director Gerhardt Zimmermann, associate conductor contributed

William Henry Curry, and assistant conductor Jeffrey Pollock led the Symphony in a concert of celebration. The Concert Singers of Cary and the Cary High School band also performed.

The amphitheater’s official dedication was set for September 15, 2001. “And we all know what happened on September 11 that year,” Lyman says.

“We had planned to have a beautiful concert with fireworks to celebrate the end of our first season and dedicate the facility,” he says. But after the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the dedication was halted, and the amphitheater became a place of healing.

“We met with the Council of Churches and planned a memorial service because there was not another place in Cary large enough to accommodate a big congregation of people,” Lyman remembers. “I have always said that the amphitheater wasn’t dedicated, it was baptized.”

The dedication finally took place on May 22, 2002, featuring crooner Tony Bennett, who performed with the North Carolina Symphony. In 2004, the amphitheater was renamed in honor of Koka Booth, the 34th mayor of Cary.

Entertainment management company ASM Global provides staff to oversee the facility and book artists.

Becky Colwell served as manager for 12 years in the early days. “We partnered with Cary to help manage the day-today operations, and our goal was to work around the Symphony’s schedule and bring in national talent to bolster revenue,” she says. Becky has fond memories of Mayor Booth, describing him as an integral part of the amphitheater.

Over time, the management team branched out and opened the space to cultural events and festivals, exposing Koka Booth Amphitheatre to new audiences and setting it apart from other outdoor entertainment venues in the Triangle.

This commitment to hosting festivals has boosted the amphitheater’s reach and attendance, along with extending its season, says current manager Jamie Curtis.

“When most amphitheaters go dark in October, we’re actually kicking into a second season,” she says.

Among the most popular cultural events are Hum Sub Diwali, a celebration of Indian art and culture; Asia Fest, with its popular

dragon boat races; and the famous North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival, which draws more than 250,000 visitors over 58 days during the holiday season, Jamie says.

Koka Booth is known as a small venue with big influence and the power to draw important artists, many of them famous enough to sell out large stadiums and arenas. Some, like Billy Strings, who gave three soldout performances early in the 2025 season, are willing to perform on multiple nights.

In 2024, both rapper Pitbull and roots musician Sturgill Simpson sold out two nights at Koka Booth.

“We appreciate that these artists can sell out 21,000 tickets in one night, yet they are willing to perform here for several nights to reach that same volume,” William says. “We’ve found that they love this venue, and they love the experience of performing here and the hospitality they receive when they come to Cary.”

Over the years, Koka Booth Amphitheatre has welcomed many stars like Harry Connick Jr., Willie Nelson, Sheryl

Crow, and Paul Simon. William says audiences can expect to hear more famous artists in the future.

A Stage for Memories

“By participating in events here, individuals begin to feel like Koka Booth Amphitheatre belongs to them, and they create memories here,” Jamie says. “Many of our festivals feature young people performing on stage, and when they see their favorite artist on that same stage, they feel a real connection to them.”

Those who have loved Koka Booth Amphitheatre for its entire 25 seasons likewise relive their own memories when they attend a concert or event.

The ever-popular Chinese Lantern Festival features stunning illuminated displays.

“I never get tired of the view from the vista point looking out over the green sloping yard and the stage with its arching roof, and catching a glimpse of the lake,” Lyman says.

And for Becky, her memories focus on the community feel.

“I remember when the gates would open a couple of hours before the Symphony even struck their first note, and everyone would get there early and just have the best time on the lawn, picnicking with each other and getting to know their neighbors,” she says.

William loves the pause he senses right before performers take the stage.

“It’s that quiet moment, the gloom between sunset and nighttime, right before the artist comes out,” he says. “You can look across the venue and see that it’s completely packed, and just for that moment, there’s a dead silence until the performer appears. And then it just erupts. That’s where I find joy.” t boothamphitheatre.com

took #5 in the US News Best Places to Live listing for the United States, ranking #1 for North Carolina and #4 for Medium-Sized Cities. Factors that went into the rankings: shorter commute time than the national average, pleasant average temperatures, low unemployment rate, high median household income, and strong job market.

We know life is great in Wake County, but we might be a little biased. National-level accolades offer proof that we’ve got bragging rights.
John Hansen

Following closely behind, Apex ranked #7 in the US, #2 in North Carolina, and #2 for Best Small Cities. The growing city, with a population of 65,000, also boasts a low unemployment rate, high median household income, and a strong job market.

SmartAsset, meanwhile, ranked Apex #7 on its 2024 listing of Most Livable Small Cities. Housing only costs 16.6% of average household income, and the ultra-low poverty rate of 2.6% indicates a thriving community. Additionally, 97.6% of residents have health insurance, and the average commute time is 22 minutes.

Southern Living

placed Cary #8 on its 2024 list of The South’s Best Cities on the Rise. “A thriving arts and culture scene, excellent restaurants, and evergrowing downtown” were listed among the factors considered, along with the community engagement fostered by the Downtown Cary Park.

Public Playground: The Nest at Downtown Cary Park

Residents have been talking about the nature-inspired playground in Downtown Cary Park since before it opened in late 2023. Its two play areas to accommodate different ages and abilities and proximity to wheelchair-accessible restrooms and water fountains helped it land the top spot, with the 20foot cardinal climbing structures, splash pad, and communication board also listed among the kudos.

Zest Sushi & Small Plates

WRITTEN BY DAVID MCCREARY

PHOTOGRAPHED BY JONATHAN FREDIN

If there’s an enduring culinary indulgence that shows no sign of slowing down, it’s sushi. What originated in eastern Asia centuries ago has evolved into a ubiquitous global experience.

It’s no surprise, then, that a sushicentric eatery would open in the heart of downtown Cary. Zest Sushi & Small Plates debuted in the spring of 2024 on the ground floor of the Rogers mixed-use development and immediately resonated with locals. In a solid showing of affirmation, the readers of Cary Magazine voted it as the Best New Restaurant in the 2025 Maggy Awards.

“We are super appreciative of everyone who voted for us,” says General Manager James Yang, who hails from New York but also has a Taiwanese heritage. “We hope to become a cornerstone restaurant in downtown Cary that will be here for years to come.”

On the day we showed up, the hot spot was humming. James was hard at work preparing orders at the sushi bar.

“We want to appeal to people who enjoy progressive Asian cuisine,” James explains, adding that the original Zest location in Roswell, Georgia, opened in 2011. “With our sushi and small plates concept similar to tapas, we make sure the cold food comes out cold and the hot food comes out hot.”

A modern and airy dining room provides a perfect spot for enjoying sushi and other progressive Asian cuisine.

Zest’s expansive dining space features an exposed ductwork ceiling offset by a polished cement floor. Striking large-format marble tile squares adorn the back wall of the sushi bar. Modern white light fixtures hint at a fish-scale design, while abundant floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to pour in. It all coalesces to deliver an atmosphere that’s simultaneously casual and chic.

An approachable menu features copious sushi selections plus small-plate options like blistered shishito peppers, salmon poke crunch, and Thai lettuce wraps with chicken.

Don’t ignore the Toro Spoons specialty featuring chopped fatty meat of tuna pervaded with sea urchin, scallions, kizami, and salmon roe.

Additional small-plate standouts include the sublime yuzu crab cakes buoyed by yuzu aioli and the pineapple-tinged Polynesian pork belly with Asian slaw.

“We braise the pork belly for about five hours, so it is really tender and delicious,” James says.

For surefire handheld winners, look no further than the Korean cheesesteak with bulgogi-marinated tenderloin and the tempura-fried soft-shell crab BLT.

Inventive cocktails and other specialty drinks pair nicely with the cuisine.
General Manager James Yang prepares a Toro Spoons specialty dish.

Among the 15 specialty rolls listed, the most popular are the Two If by Sea comprising spicy tuna, roasted jalapeños, and garlic chili crunch and the panko-fried Chatham St. roll encompassing crab salad, avocado, sweet soy sauce, spicy mayo, and scallions crowned with spicy tuna.

more. If you’re in the mood to “go big or go home,” the immense Tsunami Tower will regale you with six East Coast oysters, half a dozen Gulf oysters, six cocktail shrimp, lobster cocktail, and jumbo lump crab cocktail.

Three different chargrilled oyster preparations also appear on the bill of fare.

“Typically, we carry five different varietals of oysters,” James adds. Some of the jumbo bivalves come direct from Wilmington.

Desserts range from flourless chocolate torte and yuzu cheesecake to green tea ice cream and various flavors of mochi.

Zest’s robust bar program boasts an impressive array of beer, wine, sake, and cocktails. Martinis and mules stand apart, along with a small yet appealing assortment of mocktails.

“We try to be especially creative at the bar,” James says. “We have one of the bigger cocktail lists in town with about 16 specialty drinks, not including martinis.”

If you have trouble choosing a drink, order the potent Mango Sticky Rice martini infused with vodka, coconut rum, RumChata, mango puree, and toasted coconut shavings. It’s well worth the price of admission.

Be sure to check out the enticing daily specials such as Mixology Mondays with half-price specialty cocktails, Two for Tuesday featuring any two specialty rolls for $30, and Oyster Hour Thursday, when Gulf oysters are just $1 each from 5–6 p.m.

Online reservations are available and strongly recommended. Private dining provides seating for up to 30 guests. Open daily for lunch and dinner service, Zest also offers limited semi-covered outdoor seating. t

Burger Bonanza

FLAME-GRILLED, char-broiled, hand-pattied, or smashed — a hamburger by any of these names is DELICIOUS. Southern Wake restaurants excel at creative burger combos, proving that an all-American classic is anything but traditional. Here are six of our favorites.

The Banh Mi Smashed at Smashed Burgers & Cocktails has a tantalizing combination of crunchy pickled daikon, carrots, and jalapenos atop a juicy, caramelized burger patty.

Smashed Burgers & Cocktails

VIBES: A community-centric downtown hub with a dogfriendly patio, plus sip & stroll wine and beer thanks to the new Holly Springs Social District. Specialty cocktails and family-friendly fare equally suit weeknight dinners and weekend dates.

FEATURE BURGER: Vietnamese Banh Mi Smashed: pickled daikon and carrots, jalapenos, cilantro, hoisin sauce, and Sriracha mayo. “The Banh Mi Burger was inspired by my Vietnamese family and the traditional bánh mì we serve at Bep Vietnamese Kitchen,” says owner Adam Gilpatrick. “This combination brings together the vibrant savory-sweet flavors of a classic bánh mì with

the rich, juicy bite of a smashed burger, creating something both familiar and entirely new.”

X FACTOR: “We love smash burgers for their flavor and efficiency. It only takes about three minutes to cook a smash burger, which allows us to serve more customers while maintaining that rich, flavorful experience,” says Adam.

ENTREE OPTIONS: Ditch the bun with the Smashed Salad — your favorite burger style served over mixed greens.

Corbett's Burgers and Soda Bar

VIBES: Reconnect with friends and family at this casual local burger joint. You won’t find TVs in the dining room, says manager Sterling Watson, so guests can enjoy an intimate meal without distractions. Choose from more than 200 varieties of bottled soda to accompany your meal. Local, nostalgic, and obscure — Avery’s Totally Gross Unicorn Yack Raspberry Orange Cream Soda, anyone? — options abound.

FEATURE BURGER: Hawaiian Cowboy Burger: ⅓-pound Angus burger with cheddar cheese, grilled pineapple, hickory-smoked bacon, and Cheerwine barbecue sauce.

X FACTOR: Pairing Corbett’s signature Cheerwine sauce with grilled pineapple creates an irresistible sweet and savory combo. For max flavor impact, Sterling recommends eating the burger upside down. Sauces and side items, such as coleslaw, baked beans, and pimento cheese, are made in-house.

ENTREE OPTIONS: Gluten-free fried chicken sandwich or nuggets, New York hot dog, grilled pimento cheese sandwich.

VIBES: Taking inspiration from the famous album by The Beatles, Abbey Road Tavern boasts a lively family environment with big-screen TVs, games, and weekly entertainment, such as live music, trivia, and music bingo. Recent menu updates — a new mac and cheese recipe, burger combinations, and more — offer fresh takes on old favorites.

FEATURE BURGERS: Firecracker Burger: Certified Angus Beef patty with spicy seasoning, blue cheese crumbles, ghost pepper pepper jack cheese, fried jalapenos, and chipotle aioli. “It’s a 6 or 7 out of 10. The ghost pepper pepper jack is pretty hot,” says kitchen manager Josh Allan. Jalapeno Bacon Pimento Burger: house-made pimento cheese, two slices of bacon, fresh jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles.

X FACTOR: No matter the time, dinner can be happy hour at Abbey Road with a visit to the game room. Play arcade games like Pac Man and pinball, or a round of pool. Allen also notes that diners are welcome to play the guitars hanging on the walls.

ENTREE OPTIONS: Cha Cha Bowl, Cuban sandwich, Helter Skelter Wrap.

Town Hall Burger & Beer

VIBES: “We’re a fun, family-friendly neighborhood burger joint,” says Dalton Allen, manager of Town Hall Burger & Beer in Holly Springs. “Come hang out; catch the game. It’s a place that’s welcoming for all.” The hospitable staff and positive environment reinforce that feeling, as does the comforting, fresh menu. “We avoid the freezer as much as possible,” Dalton says.

FEATURE BURGER: The Mondo Burger: 8 oz. Certified Angus Beef patty, onion straws, applewood smoked bacon, smoked gouda cheese, house-made barbecue sauce, and lettuce on a brioche bun. Created by Armando Bacot Jr., during his time as a basketball player at UNC-Chapel Hill. “The burger has been on our menu for three or four years,” says Dalton. “It started as a special, but was so popular it became a mainstay.”

X FACTOR: Basketball fans, particularly Tar Heel fans, will enjoy trying all the specialty menu offerings created by current and former UNC players, including The Seth Burger by Seth Trimble and Honey Chili Arbol Wings developed by RJ Davis. “We always have at least one, two, or three UNC basketball players on our ‘roster,’ if you will, which is fun. They all get to come in and make their own menu creation,” says Dalton.

ENTREE OPTIONS: Ahi tuna sandwich, Greek salad, shrimp tacos.

Erica DeLong’s Triangle Ice Cream Tour

IS YOUR FAMILY as crazy about ice cream as mine is? The Triangle area is filled with ice cream spots that have gained national recognition while delighting the palates of locals. Here are some of my top picks from all around the Triangle. And if you can’t indulge in ice cream, don’t worry. We’ve got something for you, too.

HOWLING COW: Offering a one-of-a-kind experience, Howling Cow produces its ice cream at North Carolina State University using milk from their dairy cows. You can find their ice cream sold at locations across Raleigh, including their on-campus store. It’s not just about enjoying treats; it also gives you insight into the local dairy production process. Plus, it makes a great spot for family photos with an ice cream in hand and cows as your backdrop.

THE PARLOUR: Situated in downtown Durham, The Parlour offers handcrafted ice cream made from local ingredients. They’re famous for their mix of creative flavors. You could even grab dinner at Counting House nearby, explore art at the 21c Museum Hotel, and finish off with an ice cream treat.

MAPLE VIEW FARM: Nestled in the countryside near Chapel Hill, Maple View Farm boasts views that make the drive worthwhile. Stepping into the country store feels like traveling back in time. This farm holds a special place in the hearts of Chapel Hill and Hillsborough residents.

Jonathan Fredin

HANDEL’S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM:

Located in Morrisville, Handel’s continues the legacy of Alice Handel, who began crafting treats in her backyard in 1945. Their made-in-store ice cream is top notch. They even offer delivery service! They are dedicated to fundraising initiatives and supporting their community.

LUMPY’S ICE CREAM: Situated in Wake Forest, Lumpy’s serves up ice cream made from natural, locally sourced ingredients. Their trademark, “Just a Scoop Away from a Smile,” captures their commitment to delighting customers. Keep an eye out for the ice cream man, sporting his infamous mustache.

TWO ROOSTERS ICE CREAM: With spots in Raleigh and Durham, Two Roosters features a changing menu of handmade flavors. They frequently team up with businesses to source ingredients, resulting in flavors that truly reflect

the essence of the area. I agree with their motto: “Ice cream makes a bad day better and a good day great.” It all started on their grandmother’s farm in Piedmont, North Carolina. Find them helping with local charities like the Walk for Hope, which supports mental health research.

ANDIA’S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM: With multiple locations serving Cary and Raleigh, Andia’s offers deservedly award-winning ice cream. They have been featured on Good Morning America and USA Today. They ship nationwide. The Ube flavor is beautiful — and vegan! Additionally, they have treats for your pets.

FRESH. LOCAL ICE CREAM: As the name suggests, FRESH. focuses on local ingredients. With several locations in the Triangle, it’s a great spot for traditional flavors and seasonal specials. They have a catering truck too if you want to add a memorable touch to your next event.

FRESH. Local Ice Cream

GOODBERRY’S FROZEN CUSTARD:

Known for their creamy frozen custard made fresh throughout the day, Goodberry’s is a Raleigh staple. They are very big on giving back to the community and participating in school spirit nights. Custard is made with egg yolks, making it even richer than regular ice cream.

KILWINS: A family favorite because they have ice cream, fudge, caramel apples, and more, Kilwins is a national chain with over 150 franchise locations, including several in the Triangle. If you’re heading to the beach, stop by the downtown Wilmington location to grab a cone and stroll through the city.

For those who prefer a dairy-free treat ...

PELICAN’S

SNOBALLS:

Pelican’s SnoBalls offers a colorful twist on traditional snow cones with over 100 flavors of icy treats to choose from, including unique selections like Dill Pickle or Tamarind.

HILLS OF SNOW: Easily recognizable by its snowball-shaped building with two straws poking out of the top — a prominent sight in downtown Smithfield — they offer more than 101 flavors to choose from. I love the peachy delight of Fuzzy Navel! Their homemade syrups are made in 30-gallon batches because they are so popular at this Johnston County spot.

Each of these shops offers something unique, whether it’s farm-fresh ingredients, innovative flavors, or the charm of the local scenery. Enjoy your Triangle ice cream tour and stay connected @EricaDeLong.t

A FOCUS ON FINISHING TOUCHES

At Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics, pushing the envelope of excellence is one of our core values. Straight teeth alone present good alignment and function. However, in a lot of cases, they do not present the best aesthetics. Drs. Bovenizer, Baker, and Kenning go above and beyond in every case to create a pleasing and aesthetic finish. At Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics, we utilize several procedures to make our finishes stand out.

Tooth Shaping: After taking braces off, treatment is completed

with polishing and gum contouring. Polishing consists of altering the tooth shape to appear more natural and in line with the smile arc. The doctors focus on being both smile architects and artists, through shaping the teeth edges to make them as ideal and aligned as possible.

Gum Contouring: A laser gingivectomy is an orthodontic procedure used to remove or recontour gum tissue. In the case of a patient with a gummy smile, Drs. Bovenizer, Baker, and Kenning use a dental laser to eliminate extra gum tissue and expose more of the teeth.

Dental professionals sometimes get locked into straightening teeth and fixing the bite, often forgetting about the aesthetic details. The doctors and staff at Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics believe that orthodontics is more than just straight teeth, and that contouring and lasering add the finishing touches to create beautiful smiles.

The practice offers free new-patient consultations that include an X-ray, photos of your teeth, an exam with Dr. Bo, Dr. Baker, or Dr. Kenning, a treatment plan, and a financial quote.

Lasering allows them to reduce gummy smiles, even out gum heights, and give the appearance of larger teeth for a more desirable smile.

EXPERT TREATMENT. COMPASSIONATE CARE.

At High House Oral Surgery, patients experience a rare combination of surgical precision and personal attention that sets this small specialty practice apart. Oral Surgery can be an intimidating experience, but at High House Oral Surgery, it becomes one of trust, confidence, and comfort.

Led by Dr. James R. Davies, DDS, the practice focuses on wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, bone

grafting, and IV sedation — delivering advanced oral surgery care with uncommon warmth and compassion. GUIDING PARENTS THROUGH THE CHALLENGES OF BABY TEETH

At Little Tooth Co, Dr. Jean G. You brings not only expertise but also a deep sense of empathy to every patient. As a board-certified pediatric dentist, she has undergone rigorous training to specialize in the oral health needs of babies, children, and adolescents. Her years of experience ensure that each child receives the highest standard of care, whether it’s a routine cleaning or a more complex procedure.

What sets Dr. Jean apart is her understanding that a child’s dental experience goes beyond teeth. She recognizes the importance of creating a positive, stress-free environment for

children and their families. As a busy, hands-on mother herself, she has a unique perspective on what parents and children need during dental visits. She approaches every appointment with the same compassion and care she’d want for her own children, ensuring young patients feel safe and supported.

The ability to connect with parents, address concerns, and provide practical guidance on managing oral health at home is crucial to Dr. Jean’s unique approach to pediatric dentistry. This blend of professional expertise and personal understanding makes Little Tooth Co a trusted partner for families. At Little Tooth

Co, the philosophy is simple: Pediatric dentistry is not just about fixing teeth — it’s about fostering trust, building confidence, and helping children establish healthy habits for life. Dr. Jean’s empathetic, patient-first approach ensures that every child leaves her office with a smile. Parents can feel confident knowing their little ones are cared for by an experienced professional who genuinely understands the joys and challenges of raising healthy, happy children.

When your child visits Little Tooth Co, they’re in the hands of an expert who truly cares — because here, empathy comes naturally.

A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO SLEEP MEDICINE

For patients with sleep apnea or other sleep disorders, coordinating care between several practices can be, well, a nightmare. Patients may find themselves needing a sleep doctor, a sleep lab or hospital, and a durable medical equipment provider.

Enter Parkway SleepHealth Centers, a comprehensive sleep center designed to give patients with sleep problems a one-stop shop for all their

sleep needs. Founded in Cary in 2004, Parkway SleepHealth Centers is locally owned and operated by Brandon and Meghan Giegling. They understand the importance of high-quality sleep and the health issues that can arise from untreated sleep disorders.

Parkway offers consultations and follow-ups with their board-certified sleep physicians and knowledgeable physician assistants, sleep studies in

their comfortable and homey sleep lab, and provides CPAP machines and supplies, as well. Patients of Parkway often find that the cost of sleep studies and CPAP equipment is much lower at Parkway than other area providers — for the exact same services and supplies. Parkway is accredited with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is committed to providing quality, comprehensive care to its community.

FIND YOUR SMILE®

There is never a dull moment for local family dentists Drs. Robert and Bobbi Stanley. The Cary-based practice owners are parents of four and proud partners of Stanley Dentistry, a comprehensive practice near Preston. They are founders and lead instructors at Stanley Institute for Comprehensive Dentistry, a dental continuing education organization, and have been providing world-class dental care in central Cary since 1995.

Initially, Dr. Robert Stanley was a partner in business, and Dr. Bobbi was the only dentist. However, after receiving his PhD as an engineer and working in the industry for many years,

Dr. Rob made a major change and decided to join the clinical side of the practice full time as a dentist. “It just made sense for Rob to join me in practicing dentistry,” says Dr. Bobbi. “It is rare to go back to school for an entirely new career when you’re already a successful engineer. But he saw how much I truly enjoyed my work, and he had been interested in dentistry since spending time in his grandfather’s Chicago dental practice as a child.”

In the practice, Dr. Rob enjoys procedures like dental implants, oral surgery, and sedation dentistry, while Dr. Bobbi focuses on cosmetics and Invisalign. Dr. David Baranowski joined the practice to focus on general, restorative, and pediatric dentistry.

The result is a practice that serves the dental needs of the entire family under one roof.

Today, three generations of Stanleys work together to provide ethical and exceptional dental care to patients from all over the Triangle. Dr. Rob’s father, Robert Sr., leverages decades of business experience to lead operations at the practice, and Drs. Stanleys’ daughter Megan and son Shane are an an integral part of the operations team. Together, the team at Stanley Dentistry strives to not only provide exceptional care, but to help patients find their smiles. If you’re looking for a family owned and operated dental practice in Cary, look no further than Stanley Dentistry.

To create our 2025 list, LookWest partnered with national survey company topDentists LLC, which sent ballots to dentists listed online with the American Dental Association and other local dental societies in Wake County, asking, “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and physical results. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias and to use only their knowledge of their peers’ work when evaluating the other nominees. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists who they feel should be included in this list.

QUESTIONS?

More information about topDentists’ survey process can be found at usatopdentists.com .

Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are vetted with the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in North Carolina. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgements of his or her fellow dentists.

ADORN HOME FURNISHINGS HAS 12,000 SQUARE FEET OF FURNITURE. “THE REOCCURRING THING WE HEAR WHEN PEOPLE VISIT IS HOW STUNNING AND LARGE OUR SHOWROOM ACTUALLY IS,” SAYS SAMANTHA RADMARD.

Adorn Home Furnishings

MISSION: Adorn Home Furnishings is more than just a furniture store. It’s a final destination for turning one’s house into a home that is beautiful, functional, and above all else, suits the client’s wants and needs. Whether it’s laying out a practical room configuration with a floor plan, choosing coordinating fabrics, or just finding a decorative item to bring the room together, we are there to help you every step of the way.

ON QUALITY: We offer furniture that is custom, that you normally would have to wait six months for. We just put very popular items, nice classic styles, on order in neutral fabrics. Much of it is built in North Carolina, eight-way hand-tied, water repellent, in durable fabrics. You can actually sit down on something and try it out, not order from a catalog.

CHOOSING WISELY: You’re only sitting on a piece of furniture for a brief moment before making a decision, without considering fabric cleanability,

A MELTING POT OF PERSONALITIES AND CULTURES,” SAYS SAMAMTHA.

cushion firmness, how it flows with the rest of your room, and other important factors. For example, seat depth is very important. While one person may want to cuddle up on something with a very deep seat, another may find that depth causes strain on their back. We ask customers the necessary questions to help them pick pieces that work for their individual needs.

INSTANT GRATIFICATION: People’s style preferences and budgets are all over the place in this area, but one thing everyone has in common is they want stuff NOW. Our store can be a mess sometimes because we are selling off of our floor every single day.

“ ” We thrive in chaos. We have twin toddlers and opened a business.
