editor’s letter It’s that purrfect time of year when we get to celebrate the unconditional love and joy that our furry (and feathered and scaled!) companions bring into our lives.

Thanks to our readers’ willingness to share their beloved pets with us, we are pleased to showcase their good looks and great personalities in our annual Pet Parade. Page through and see for yourself!

In August, Wake Living was fortunate to spend a morning trailing the Pup Park Shuttle — an innovative bus-and-play service that takes dogs on adventures to Raleigh spots. Owned by Baden Jaxen, this community-building enterprise is well on its way to becoming a must-have for local pet parents. The bark bus is coming to a street near you!

As we enter the time of year when dogs need sweaters for walks and cats are cuddling in closer, we introduce you to Philip Bradford, whose Instagram account Philip or Flop offers DIY home improvement help for over 1 million followers. To date, Philip’s most successful project is the connection and community he’s building.

As an engineer with more than two decades of DIY home improvement experience, Raleigh-area native Philip Bradford is no stranger to building and craftsmanship.

And in the last six years, the NC State alumnus and professor has built a social media empire from what started as a hobby.

On Instagram, Philip or Flop has attracted more than 1 million followers, as well as advertising partnerships with 115 different companies, including Lowe’s, Ford, Best Buy, LG, General Electric, and Duluth.

Dispensing DIY pointers with humor, warmth, and authenticity, Philip takes followers along for the ride as he tackles his own home improvement projects.

Projects like a built-in gift-wrapping station, epoxy garage floors, a shade garden, an outdoor kitchen, and a custom coastal laundry closet — just to name a few.

And the turning point — when Philip or Flop began to move from hobby to side hustle — was building a backyard playhouse for his daughters.

Onward and Upward

After launching the Instagram account “for fun” in 2018, Philip picked up a “few thousand” followers that first year.

Then he built an “over-the-top playhouse” with a metal roof, shiplap interior, and a custom kitchen. He documented the construction from start to finish. “People just went crazy for that,” he says.

Within a couple months, the account had 50,000 followers, “mostly because of posting content around that playhouse.”

That’s when he realized: “Wow, this could be something more than just posting things for fun.”

He soon lined up a few small partnerships and leaned more into Instagram’s Stories feature, which allowed for more frequent and efficient video storytelling.

And during covid, Philip says, “DIY content just kind of went crazy.”

Philip or Flop soon grew to a few hundred thousand followers. Then half a million. “And it became a real side business for me at that point,” he says.

The Business Side

For the first year, Philip managed his own contracts, which he says was “probably one of the hardest things to do.” He opted to sign with a management company to handle the paperwork side.

“They bring partnerships to the table and they review all the contracts for me,” he says. “It saves me a ton of time.”

Time he can spend engaging with his followers.

While many in his position might have staff to handle such tasks, Philip’s DIY ethos doesn’t just apply to home improvement.

“In the early days of Instagram, engaging with like-minded accounts and engaging with your followers was super critical to growing your audience. And I just kind of kept doing that,” he says.

“It’s still important today. But a lot of times people are posting multiple pieces of content per day. And a lot of people don’t have the time to respond to DMs personally,” Philip says.

While other creators rely on AI responses or hired assistants, Philip prefers not to outsource. “I’ve always done it myself because I like the connection,” he says.

That connection and personal engagement is a major component to what sets Philip or Flop apart. Philip estimates he has responded to tens of thousands of DMs and post comments in the last six years.

With a full-time job as a professor, the Philip or Flop business remains a part-time gig. Philip focuses on quality rather than quantity.

“I can spend that couple hours responding to post comments, my thumbs typing as fast as I can for a few hours to respond to as many people as I can,” he says.

Behind the Scenes

Content creation requires planning and precision. A 30-second video post is backed by hours of work on the back end. Philip keeps a calendar that factors in what followers might be interested in as well as what projects need to be done around the house.

Before he finishes one DIY, “I am thinking about what my next project is going to be so I can have materials ordered,” he says. Especially with sponsored content, which has to be reviewed by the sponsor, projects are often completed a week or two before he presents them to his followers.

Philip finds that the “before” is almost as important as the result, as before-and-after transitions are in high demand with the DIY audience.

And that means taking a lot of video footage.

“Once I start the project, I’m typically recording almost everything,” Philip says. “I delete things occasionally, but I think my camera roll has something like 35,000 video clips on it.”

A one-minute Reel or TikTok video doesn’t allow for much detail, he says, “so I’ve always used my Instagram Stories to connect with my audience at that deeper DIY level,” including intricate details of the build, the materials, and the stepby-step process.

Love the Process

In mid-August, Philip posted a Reel showing how his kitchen design allows him to unload the dishwasher without moving his feet thanks to all-drawer lower cabinets.

In less than 24 hours, the post had 8 million views, 366,000 likes, 3,000 comments, and almost 99,000 shares.

But that reach doesn’t happen overnight.

“It takes a lot more than just recording a one-minute video to grow a large account. It takes time,” he says.

“There’s a lot of creation involved. There’s a lot of preparation involved. You really have to love the process.”

And after rising to fame, Philip still loves the work itself.

“If you love the niche that you’re working in, it helps a lot,” he says. “Don’t try to start out to become an influencer just because you know that there might be some money involved.”

Dividing Irises

In the spring, bearded irises (Iris germanica) can be real showstoppers with their masses of gorgeous blossoms. However, after a few years of dependable displays, established bearded iris beds often fizzle in the flower power department.

What’s wrong? Too little fertilizer? Too dry? Too wet?

Try too mature. As with all plants, happy, healthy bearded irises will grow and expand their root bases. This is desirable, of course, but it can lead to overcrowding, which will definitely hinder bloom production.

The easiest solution is to simply divide your sputtering beauties. Usually done about every five years or so, it gives you a chance to not only revive your irises, but also share some with gardening friends. And guess what? This month is a good time to do the deed, so roll up those sleeves and get to work!

Using a shovel — or, even better, a spading pitchfork — dig up the bed by carefully raising iris rhizomes from their underworld lair, which is usually just below the soil’s surface. Then, wash them and gently pull, or, if necessary, cut apart, being careful not to wreck too many roots.

Now, hold out your ring finger and compare it to each rhizome, looking for ones that are about as wide with leaf blades and roots still attached. These have the most potential for strong flower production in the future.

Slightly larger rhizomes will also work, but big ol’ chubby ones are usually spent when it comes to delivering maximum flower displays. Rhizomes that are discolored, full of holes, or squishy should be discarded.

Before replanting, snip the leaves back to about 6 inches long, and also cut away any lingering flower stalks. Then run off to find a sunny garden spot that has well-draining, heavily amended soil.

Rhizomes should be planted about a foot apart horizontal to the soil’s surface, and slightly below ground — going deep can ding future flower production. Set the ’zomes on small mounds of prepared dirt and spread their roots downward into the surrounding soil.

Since transplanted bearded irises will be working to become established this fall, help them along by watering during any extended dry stretches. Next year will be a transition period, so their bloom show probably won’t be up to typical grand standards, but be patient and you will be rewarded with reinvigorated flower displays in the years to come! t L.A. Timely Tip If you had a ton of fun expanding your garden this year, you probably also had a great big ol’ pile of leftover plastic pots from all the newbie plantings.

As a responsible gardener, sending them to the landfill is not an option.

As a practical — or, in my case, cheap — gardener, saving them for planting projects next year is the way to go. Just soak them in a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water for an hour, wash with a brush or sponge, and then wipe dry.

Going these extra steps to clean used containers will help assure they will be free of overwintering fungi, diseases, or bad bug eggs that could spoil your potting garden party next spring!

• Now is a good time to fill up the veggie patch with such cool-season favorites as carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, collards, kale, lettuce, onions, mustard greens, parsnips, spinach, radishes, and turnips.

• Migrating garden-friendly flyers will appreciate it this fall if you keep the bird feeder well stocked and the bird bath regularly filled with fresh water.

• Thinking about morphing your Halloween pumpkin into a Thanksgiving decoration as well? A pumpkin will retain its color and shape longer if the rind is intact — in other words, no carving. Also, an extra 2- to 3-inch bit of stem still attached will help preserve a pumpkin, so keep that in mind while you are hunting at your local pickin’ patch.

• If you are still mowing the lawn as autumn leaves begin tumblin’ down, use a bagger attachment to collect clippings of both. This mix of dry and wet organic material is the perfect allnatural fuel to start a compost pile.

You hear it before you see it — the cacophony of happy howls and boisterous barks coming from the Pup Park Shuttle as it makes its way through Raleigh’s residential streets. And what comes next is sure to wag any tail: The bus pulls to a stop in front of a house, the driver opens the double doors, and the next four-legged passenger comes bursting out from behind their front door and bounding along the walkway to almost trip up the stairs and take their seat.

“They’re being teleported to different parks all around the city,” says Pup Park Shuttle founder & CEO Baden Jaxen about his unique shuttle service for dogs.

The cheerful bus — with its daily quote whiteboard, faux-grass flooring, and painted murals — picks up pups from their homes and takes them on tail-wagging adventures around the city. “They get to socialize, explore, and burn off energy — all while having a blast!” says Baden about his

rolling playground designed to give dogs the ultimate day out.

And former professional basketball player Baden knows something about rolling with things. When he tore his Achilles tendon during the second game of the season, he found inspiration in an unexpected place: a video of a dog bus in Canada.

“I was devastated,” he says about successive career-ending injuries, “but I believe everything happens for a reason.” So, while recuperating in Canada, Baden transformed injury into innovation and thought, “Why not bring this concept to North Carolina?”

After he returned to Raleigh and a franchise opportunity to operate a dog bus locally fell through, Baden recognized the blessing in disguise. He explains: “It allowed me to be innovative and creative with my own idea that we were able to manifest.” There are busy pet owners everywhere, so daily dog bus adventures offer a practical solution

to the challenge of keeping dogs active and happy — but Pup Park Shuttle’s perks have set the wheels in motion for a truly enriching experience for community canines.

So how does Baden’s bus go the extra mile? Unlike with other dog shuttles, pups aren’t just visiting one park. Instead, they are sniffing out 3–4 locations in a single day, which gives them the chance to experience new sights and smells several times over. “It’s not just about exercise,” Baden explains. “It’s about mental stimulation, too.”

The shuttle is a game-changer for families juggling work, school, and errands, as it allows them to provide their dogs with the exercise and socialization they crave. “By the time you get home,” Baden says, “your pup has had a full day of fun, and you can relax without worrying about their energy levels.”

The service may be designed with fun in mind, but socialization and safety remain a focus. “We choose parks wisely and keep a close eye on our furry passengers,” says Baden. Plus, all pups must be well-tempered and up to date on vaccinations before hopping on board. There has never been any kind of altercation, and the only time a deer was spotted it was by Baden, who was able to redirect the dogs’ attention.

Despite only hitting the streets on November 26, 2024, the Pup Park Shuttle has been warmly embraced. Pet parent Holli Draughn, whose dogs Bella and Birdie enjoy round-trip service a couple times a week, expresses what’s obvious to anyone who has used the Pup Park Shuttle: “Baden’s been great!” Indeed, from the hugs he shares with pet parents at every stop to his Pied Piper ability to lead the dogs

through their various activities, there’s little doubt that Baden is dog’s best friend.

And the pup bus isn’t just a hit with dogs — it’s also gaining traction in the community and making a pawsitive impact. “It’s all about building a community of dog lovers,” says Baden, who is “so grateful for the support and the love that we’ve been getting.” There are big plans to collaborate with local businesses, and even the possibility of showcasing the work of local artists as a rolling gallery. With a vision to expand to other cities through his own franchise model, Baden shares that “we’re gonna continue to spread the joy.”

Vintage Labrador is more than just a vintage store. It’s a heartfelt expression of owner Suzanne Scire’s passion for collecting and storytelling. Since opening the doors of Vintage Labrador in 2009, Suzanne has created a space that feels like stepping into a warm, inviting home filled with character and history.

Originally from New Jersey, Suzanne made the significant decision to relocate to Raleigh to be closer to her family, particularly her new grandson. “We packed up my business at the Jersey Shore and moved here last year with our two dogs, Stella and Murphy,” she shares. This move allowed her to pursue her dream of owning a shop while maintaining a flexible schedule to visit her children, who have since started their own chapters in Seattle and Raleigh.

Suzanne started doing markets in the Raleigh area, but finding her warehouse space in its charming Five Points neighborhood aligned with her vision for Vintage Labrador. The name itself reflects Suzanne’s

love for two of her favorite things: vintage treasures and her beloved dogs, a rescue black lab mix and a chocolate English lab. “The inspiration to open Vintage Labrador was to showcase my passion for collecting vintage pieces and share them in a store,” she explains.

The unique vibe of the shop embodies Suzanne’s love of cottage charm and her focus on creating a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. She believes a home comprises both the inside and out, which is why she “brings the outside in” by including garden decor alongside interior pieces, drawing from her beloved experience of working on a flower farm in New Jersey and her passion for the garden.

Suzanne’s approach to curating items is simple yet effective: Would I put it in my house?

She handpicks vintage furniture, garden decor, architectural salvage, and decorative pieces that feel genuine and timeless and which possess great character. “I believe if you always buy what you like, then things will all go together,” she says.

The store, Suzanne shares, is meant to feel like stepping into a collected home — with warm layers and filled with stories — rather than a typical retail space. She sources from a combination of antique markets, estate sales, and trusted dealers up and down the coast, and she enjoys traveling and what she describes as the “thrill of treasure hunting.” In fact, Suzanne admits: “I don’t think I can ever give it up.”

At Vintage Labrador, every piece has a story. Suzanne emphasizes the significance of sharing the history behind vintage items, as it creates a connection between the object and the customer. “A person might have a fond memory associated with where a piece came from,” she explains, “making it more appealing to have in their home.”

One of her favorite finds, which remains in her own home to this day, is an antique pine seed packet cabinet with unique drawers and custom old glass drawer pulls engraved with the seed names, which serves as a testament to the beauty of vintage craftsmanship.

As the vintage market evolves, Suzanne has noticed a strong shift toward sustainability. “People are moving away from mass-produced decor and looking for quality, history, and uniqueness,” she observes.

Vintage shopping not only gives new life to existing items but also promotes a sustainable lifestyle by reducing waste and keeping beautiful craftsmanship in circulation, allowing customers to reflect their values in their homes without sacrificing style.

With Vintage Labrador, Suzanne aims to create a welcoming corner of the neighborhood. “Raleigh has such a vibrant, creative energy,” she says. “I want to help people see vintage shopping

not just as a trend, but as a meaningful way to decorate with intention, support sustainability, and celebrate craftsmanship.”

By offering a curated mix of furniture and finds, she hopes to spark nostalgia and joy in her customers. “I want to become more than just a place where people feel inspired,” she says. Instead, she wants “to remind people of the charm that comes with giving things new life.”

As she envisions the future of Vintage Labrador, Suzanne is excited about the prospect of hosting special events and collaborating with local artisans. As for the prospect of expanding her collection and offering even more unique finds, she shares: “I hope to see more travel and treasure hunting overseas.”

In a world where misunderstandings and fear can cloud the relationship between law enforcement and youth, the Shop with a Cop initiative shines as a beacon of hope and connection. Established years ago, Raleigh Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program was designed to foster positive relationships between local youth and police officers and create an environment where trust can flourish while spreading the joy of the holiday season.

The inception of Shop with a Cop arose from the recognition that many young people view officers with hesitation or apprehension, often due to negative experiences

or media portrayals. The event provides a relaxed, stress-free opportunity for officers to engage with them, helping to break down misconceptions and build lasting trust.

“Our goal is for the kids to realize they can reach out to us whenever they need assistance,” explains Senior Officer J. Thompson.

Often, officers interact with them during traumatic situations, such as car accidents or neighborhood incidents. This initiative flips the script by allowing genuine connections to form over shared experiences in a safe and fun setting.

Every fall, the program reaches out to various community partners to nominate

participants for Shop with a Cop. This includes school social workers, local police officers, and community organizations. The selection process is inclusive, with no strict criteria beyond participants being between the ages of 6 and 16; nominations can be based on good grades, leadership, or even personal challenges.

Ensuring inclusivity is a priority for the program. Senior Officer Thompson emphasizes the importance of reaching out to partners across the city to connect with children from diverse backgrounds. “We want to make sure we’re reaching kids from all walks of life and different neighborhoods,” he explains,

highlighting the program’s commitment to community representation and ensuring “that we’re reaching kids who would benefit from this experience.”

The event typically begins with officers, volunteers, and families gathering at a local retail store. After a warm welcome from the police chief, participants are matched with officers for a day of shopping. The atmosphere is filled with laughter and excitement as kids pick out gifts, not just for themselves but often for family members, too. A wrapping station is available for those who want to present their gifts beautifully, and each family receives a gift basket filled with enjoyable activities for a Family Fun Night.

For Shop with a Cop, success isn’t measured by statistics. “We measure our success by the smiles on the kids’ faces and the cart full of toys they get to take home!” says Senior Officer Thompson. This simple yet

profound approach highlights the program’s focus on emotional impact rather than mere numbers — and the joy of the event is palpable. “The kids, and the officers, have a great time!” he continues. In recent years, participation has significantly increased, which demonstrates the community’s positive reception of the program.

The impact of Shop with a Cop on participants is profound. It provides kids with a unique opportunity to interact with officers in a non-threatening environment, and many officers report that they enjoy the experience just as much as the kids do. “Officers often use their own money to buy extra gifts for the kids, showing their commitment to the community,” shares Senior Officer Thompson.

This initiative also allows officers to unwind — without the pressure of responding to urgent calls — and engage in meaningful conversations with children about their lives,

interests, and aspirations. Senior Officer Thompson explains how bridges are built: “The relaxed setting facilitates discussions that wouldn’t typically happen during regular police interactions.”

The success of Shop with a Cop relies heavily on its partnerships with local organizations. Collaborations with school social workers and community groups help identify children who would benefit from the program. “These organizations understand the children and their stories,” says Senior Officer Thompson, “and they refer us to kids who they believe would be a good fit.”

Additionally, the Raleigh Police Department’s Families Behind the Badge group (family members of RPD employees who provide support to employees, their families, and the community) plays a crucial role by creating gift baskets for participants. The Raleigh Police Foundation also supports the

initiative by providing financial backing and the resources necessary for its success.

While public support is not actively sought, the program benefits from several sponsors who help fund the event. According to Senior Officer Thompson: “Their financial support is crucial to making this event happen.”

By creating a space for positive interactions, the program not only builds trust but also cultivates a sense of community. As the initiative continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of compassion, understanding, and the belief that together we can create a brighter future for the children of our community.

Hey, fabulous people! It is that magical time of the year again when the air turns crisp, the leaves morph into a collage of colors, and pumpkin spice dominates everything from lattes to candles. Fall is knocking at our door and bringing more than just apple cider.

Before you get all cozy and snuggle into the couch with your favorite throw blanket and a good book, let’s chat about transforming both your home and your closet to embrace this beautiful change of season. I mean, who doesn’t love a good seasonal refresh? So crank up the music, and let’s get organized!

First stop: the kiddos’ closets. If yours are anything like mine, they resemble more of a jumbled jungle than a closet. You’ve got sundresses next to snow boots, bathing suits tangled with Halloween costumes, and an army of barely worn sandals. Time to dive in!

Start by doing a quick inventory. Pull out everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. Turn it into a fun mission. Put the kiddos to work! Have them try on their clothes to see what still fits and what needs to go. (Ella was cooperative when I told her it’s a fashion show, but I had to bribe Easton.)

This is the perfect time for a donation drop. Schools and charities always appreciate the extra help right when the season changes. If it’s in good condition and hasn’t seen the light of day in six months, let it go.

Now move on to your own wardrobe.

Why not get your girlfriends together for a closet clean out party?

and bring forward those cuddly sweaters and boots. How fun to find your “favorite” sweater at the back of the closet!

Don’t forget to give everything a little freshening up, too. Air out items you haven’t worn lately or run them through the wash because the mustiness they acquire while tucked away at the top of your closet is no joke. Ever get to work and realize your sweater smells stale? Avoid that embarrassing situation before it happens.

And don’t rush yourself! Organizing can take some time if you get overwhelmed by the mess (like me), so block off your calendar and build in the time to step away. You can also call in a friend or hire help to force you to accomplish these tasks. And hey, who doesn’t feel a little lighter and brighter after a good declutter? Your space will feel less crowded and much more breathable.

Now it’s time for the rest of the house. A seasonal switch-up isn’t just about what you wear. A few tweaks will shift the whole atmosphere of your home toward a cozy fall vibe.

Swap out those summer colors for warmer tones. I adore adding a splash of maroon or mustard to my living space, like a cozy blanket on the couch with mustard yellow throw pillows. And don’t forget a cute pumpkin decoration for the coffee table.

It’s little touches like these that invite that cozy fall feeling into your space. I often get a preserved boxwood wreath and add a different color bow or tuck a few seasonal artificial flowers in it so you don’t have to keep changing out the whole wreath.

As we speed into this new season, it’s truly about more than just sweaters and hot drinks. It’s about creating a space that feels like a warm hug. It’s about standing still in gratitude for all the beauty fall brings and letting our surroundings reflect that joy and coziness.

A new restaurant has opened in Cary that definitively fills a void, and people are quickly finding safe harbor there.

Cape Fear Seafood Company, which originated in Wilmington back in 2008, is actively angling for diners in the Triangle. The growing full-service concept now has multiple locations in Wake County, with two in Raleigh, one in Wake Forest, and now the latest at MacGregor Square on Lake Pine Drive, which opened in May. “Cary has been on our map for several years, but the right timing didn’t happen until recently,” says franchisee Eddie Elliott, who worked with business partner Matt Wivell to reel in an ideal outpost just off Highway 64 near Costco.

While Cape Fear is an award-winning franchise eatery, the new spot is locally owned and operated.

“I started at the original location in Wilmington in 2011 as a part-time bartender,” Eddie recalls, adding that visionary founder Evans Trawick gave him an opportunity to help fulfill the company’s mission to transport guests on a coastal culinary journey.

Upon entering the Cary space, patrons find themselves

immersed in a buoyant blue-green oasis that conjures a relaxed beach vibe. Walls are adorned with a mix of Wilmington photographer Ned Leary’s serene nautical shots and one-of-a-kind copper sculptures — a sea turtle, an octopus, and a “lucky grouper” — handcrafted by Western NC–based artist R. Hanes Hoffman Jr. When it comes to what emerges from the kitchen, the menu casts a wide net that yields Calabash-style seafood platters, grilled shrimp, beer-battered fish-and-chips, broiled scallops, snow crab legs, and much more. Landlubbers will appreciate choices like a 12-ounce ribeye steak, seared chicken breast, and an Angus beef cheeseburger.

“There’s something for everyone here,” says General Manager Jay Niemeyer, a Durham native and seasoned restaurant operations specialist. “We also have the best Calabash seafood you’ll find anywhere outside the beach.”

Eddie adds that Cape Fear is unique not just for the extensive bill of fare but additionally for its consumer-friendly prices. To that point, lunch specials are available daily until 4 p.m.

“We consciously keep in mind the person who wants to come in and get the shrimp basket or the Cedric fried fish sandwich, which are both under $14,” he says. “One guy thinks Cape Fear is where he goes for his wedding anniversary, while another person comes in and dines with us three times a week.”

Whenever you visit, start your meal with a first-rate appetizer such as seared ahi tuna served alongside Asian sesame coleslaw; mini lump crab cakes with an emulsified lemon beurre blanc; and Thai chili-tinged sweet and spicy jumbo shrimp.

Among the standout entrees, don’t ignore the sumptuous shrimp and grits with bacon, mushrooms, and tomato immersed in a Low Country cream sauce and served atop perfectly thick cheese grits. The dish was named one of five “Must-Try Shrimp and Grits in NC” in a 2013 edition of Our State magazine.

Also consider diving into the popular saltimbocca (a term that means “jumps in the mouth”) featuring chef ’s choice white fish enveloped in thinly sliced prosciutto and perched on a bed of spinach with mushrooms, tomatoes, goat cheese, and parmesan.

The bountiful Whole Boat combo platter overflows with lightly battered fried shrimp, flounder, oysters, clams, and scallops served with hushpuppies, french fries, and coleslaw.

Can’t-go-wrong desserts range from classic crème brûlée and an espresso brownie sundae to a legit key lime pie and blueberry cobbler served à la mode, which pays homage to an Evans family recipe.

Customers seem grateful for the new Cape Fear and its proximity to Apex, Holly Springs, and the surrounding area.

Cary resident Alan Lawton and his wife, Donna, came in for dinner recently and ordered crab legs and grilled shrimp, respectively.

“We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals,” Alan says. “Both portions were generous, and the seasoning and cooking were done to perfection.”

A stellar Sunday brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekly, churning out offerings like biscuits and gravy with lump crabmeat; a Low Country breakfast bowl with blackened jumbo shrimp, sunny-side-up eggs, andouille sausage, and fingerling potatoes; and the goat cheese frittata — a fusion of goat cheese, eggs, spinach, mushroom, onions, roasted tomatoes, asparagus, and red peppers served in a cast-iron skillet. As for drinks, the wine list showcases whites and reds from Argentina, California, France, Italy, and New Zealand available by the glass or bottle. You’ll find half a dozen beers on draft, most originating in North Carolina.

“Sunday through Thursday we offer drink specials,” Eddie says. “We also have an accessible full-service bar with quality craft cocktails.”

Service at Cape Fear is noticeably warm and welcoming. What’s more, it feels authentic.

“Southern hospitality is a core value for us,” Jay says. “We hire genuinely friendly team members who enjoy working together and treat our guests well.”

One other meaningful factor makes the restaurant stand apart: a heartwarming charitable component.

In 2014, Cape Fear founders Evans and Nikki Trawick’s daughter, Ande, was born with a severe congenital heart defect.

After enduring three open-heart surgeries and spending extensive time in the hospital, Ande ultimately recovered and today lives a vibrant, healthy life.

Four years after Ande’s birth, her parents partnered with Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham and established The Trawick Pediatric Cardiology Research Fund to advance cardiac treatment for children like their daughter.

Nowadays $1 from each sale of Cape Fear’s Surf and Turf Chimichurri appetizer — Ande’s favorite — goes toward the research fund. Since 2018, more than $246,000 has been raised for this worthy cause.
