A message from Paul Harker Welcome to our eighth edition of Woolworths News.

Over the past month it has been a pleasure to travel again and connect with our suppliers face to face. I’ve missed being able to do this, and I am thrilled that we’re finally able to meet in person again.

As part of my travels, in May I had the opportunity to head to Melbourne for the Australian Food and Grocery Council Event, with this trip allowing me to network with suppliers, industry peers, and listen to the biggest issues facing our sector. What struck me was the number of people who attended this event to catch up and reconnect with one another, which showed me just how important it is for us to be able to meet face to face. I then took some time to visit some of our trade partners including Nature’s Organics, Sukin Australia, Chobani, Mars Pet and Montague. Thank you so much to all these suppliers for your hospitality and for being so welcoming. It was great to be able to hear feedback on what we are doing well and, importantly, where we can improve.

It has been a big few months of events as we continue to keep you up-to-date with our strategy and hear what is on your mind.

In May we hosted four hybrid Category Updates with over 500 suppliers attending in person at our Bella Vista Support office, and more than 1,000 virtually. Our Fruit and Veg team travelled to Brisbane to connect with their partners at HORT Connections, and last month we wrapped up our Mid-Year update where I was joined

by Brad Banducci, CEO & Managing Director of Woolworths Food Group, and Natalie Davis, Managing Director of Woolworths Supermarkets, where we outlined our FY23 strategy and deep-dived into some of the pillars and answered your questions.

2 We behave like business partners Recently Woolworths has been addressing how we can partner with more First Nations suppliers, and with so many fantastic First Nations suppliers now working with Woolworths, we want to share their stories with you!

Introducing, Supply Aus. As one of our largest First Nations suppliers, Supply Aus is a procurement house that supplies Woolworths with a range of First Nations owned products, including PPE equipment, and the much-loved coffee brand, Dhuwa Coffee.

We interviewed Managing Director, Shawn Andrews, to tell us more about Supply Aus' purpose, and what drives his team.

“More Indigenous people need to own more brands, so Supply Aus aims to solve this. When we started Supply Aus, we were four separate business owners who all collaborated to procure Indigenous brands together. Yet Supply Aus had a deeper purpose than this, as we wanted to create a business that could also change the landscape for Indigenous kids living in communities that have transgenerational trauma.

When starting Supply Aus, we launched our charity ‘Dreaming Futures’, which 5% of our net sales goes back into. Dreaming Futures is putting a stop to transgenerational trauma by giving young Indigenous people new relationships and exposing them to the workforce, an experience that they could easily miss out on. By leveraging corporate partnerships, ‘Dreaming Futures’ aims to normalise workforce participation and boost confidence in Indigenous students. Supply Aus is built for this charity, and I can’t stress that enough.

When Supply Aus hit the market, we were incredibly disruptive and created a lot of noise, but were also very nimble and successful in finding ways to procure Indigenous brands.

Partnering with Woolworths has been a very positive experience for us, and in terms of cultural sensitivity and respect, they have been excellent. They have been great at listening to us and Indigenous suppliers to understand what their facilities are capable of and to support them to only grow forward. There is so much opportunity for even more conversations, which we can’t wait to have with Woolworths."

This years Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants recipients have just been announced, with thousands of students all around Australia set to benefit. More than 1050 Primary Schools and Early Learning Centres have been awarded up to $1000 each in this latest funding round.

The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program enables schools to create practical hands-on teaching activities and programs, helping students to grow their own fruit and vegetables, plant Bush Tucker gardens, enhance native habitats to support local flora and fauna, as well as recycle and compost.

This is the fourth round of funding to date, and this grant round is worth more than $1 million. Since this program began in 2018, Woolworths has contributed over $4 million to fund more than 3,800 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants projects across Australia.

We are proud to partner with Landcare Australia on this program and to support a grassroots movement dedicated to managing environmental issues in local communities.

Mini Woolworths Supermarkets Three more Mini Woolies Supermarkets opened in April and May, taking the overall total to 11 across NSW, ACT, Queensland and now South Australia.

Our Mini Woolies program helps children and adults who have intellectual disabilities or developmental delays to become familiar and build confidence in a simulated supermarket setting. Students also gain skills such as customer service and merchandising.

Feedback from the educators, carers, and the children and adults engaging with these Mini Woolies sites has been overwhelmingly positive. We are pleased to advise that we will be taking this concept to many more locations around Australia over the next 12 months.

Woolworths takes part in the 2022 Ozharvest Community Cook-Off In May, a number of our Woolworths leaders participated in the OzHarvest 2022 Community CookOff! Together, our team raised $90,314 (blowing our $50k fundraising target through the roof!), which will go directly to 1.2 million Australians who are currently experiencing food insecurity.

The OzHarvest Community Cook-off saw our team cook 80 meals with the help of the Rockpool kitchen, which OzHarvest then distributed to families who have been doing it particularly tough over the last couple of years. This event was such a fantastic fundraiser and is vital to help keep OzHarvest operating all around Australia. We are proud of our partnership with OzHarvest as we work together to reduce food waste and alleviate hunger in Australia.

Sustainability Updates Changes to our bag range for a greener future Woolworths has become the first national supermarket to pledge to remove 15c and online plastic shopping bags for good! In early June, we announced that we will phase out these bags nationwide over the next year.

This change will remove more than 9,000 tonnes of plastic annually.

The 15c and online plastic shopping bags will be phased out gradually state-by-state from Woolworths supermarkets, Metros, and online orders, with Woolworths in Western Australia already making the move earlier this year in time for the State Government mandate coming into effect at the end of this month.

Eight in every ten Woolworths customers already bring their own bags when they shop, and we encourage customers to bring their own bags each time they shop. For those who don't bring their own bags, Woolworths’ paper bags made from 70% recycled paper are available in-store along with a range of reusable alternatives.

In South Australia, compostable Fruit & Veg barrier bags have replaced traditional plastic F&V bags. Our SA customers also have good access to the FOGO (kerbside food organics) collection, with the majority of residents able to safely dispose of the compostable bags in their green bin.

The bags work well with kitchen food scrap caddies, making it easy for customers to both reduce their plastic waste, and to divert food waste from landfill, a win-win!

This change has the potential to remove around 70 tonnes of plastic waste from circulation each year in SA alone.

We will continue to explore opportunities to help make it easier for our customers to make more sustainable choices.

Woolworths Group to flip the switch on 100% green energy in South Australia by July Woolworths Group’s operations in South Australia will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity from July this year - the first state to go completely green in the retailer’s nationwide transition by 2025.

A new South Australian renewable energy partnership will see the retailer’s almost 70 Woolworths supermarkets, 17 BIG W stores and Adelaide Regional Distribution Centre go green equivalent to every home in Brighton and Glenelg switching to green energy.

Under a new energy partnership from July, Woolworths Group will source South Australian renewable electricity from Iberdrola Australia's wind turbines and solar network at the newly developed Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park.

50 turbines and 250,000 solar panels will work in tandem to supply approximately 100,000 Megawatt hours of renewable electricity per year on the retailer’s behalf.

Woolworths Group has pledged not only to reach net neutral carbon emissions by 2050, but to make its operations net carbon positive by 2050 - if not sooner - meaning it will remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces.

South Australia has been the site of a range of retail sustainability advancements in recent years: The first state to ban single-use plastic bags and picnicware; The home of Woolworths’ strategic paper bag manufacturing partner, Detpak, which has supported the onshoring of paper bag production; and Most recently, the first state in which Woolworths replaced plastic fruit and veg bags with a compostable alternative in response to high rates of composting access.

Following this milestone in South Australia in July, Woolworths Group will continue to gradually replace traditional energy contracts in other states with green agreements as it transitions to renewable energy nationwide by 2025.

As Australia’s largest retailer, representing around one per cent of the country’s total energy use, Woolworths Group’s transition to renewable electricity by 2025 represents a significant influx of green energy to the national grid and a sizable investment in the sector over the next three years.

Since 2015, Woolworths Group has cut its carbon emissions by more than 27 per cent through ongoing investment in energy efficiency, including the transition to LED lighting in more than 1,000 supermarkets, and the continued rollout of its own solar panel network across the rooftops of stores and distribution centres - now numbering more than 99,000 panels across 171 locations.

Partner Hub Update

Product Images submissions via Partner Hub

Recently the product submission process was enhanced with additional functionality allowing suppliers to submit project images via Partner Hub, or alternatively through a third party e.g. GS1 Australia or SKUvantage. The introduction of this functionality has streamlined the process ensuring the most current data including detailed nutritional information and images are published online for our customers.

This enhancement required complex system integration, and with feedback from internal teams and suppliers alike, we have identified further opportunities to improve the functionality. We are also working closely with 3rd party data providers GS1 & SkuVantage to make onpack and image data integration as seamless as possible for any of our trade partners using these services, and we are confident that we can significantly improve the user experience with all of these elements over the coming weeks.

We encourage and welcome your continued feedback to help us improve on our Partner Hub functionality so please keep it coming .

Updates to the Supplier Landing Page

We have launched a new Supplier Landing Page, which aims to make it much easier for our partners to navigate the system, with quick links to the most utilised functions and easy to use tables that identify outstanding actions and a snapshot of the status of your product data. We hope this has proved a valuable new edition to the Partner Hub platform and welcome any feedback to further improve this.

The WalkMe Guidance

The WalkMe Analytics tool in Partner Hub is very useful in guiding our Suppliers through specific tasks within the system and highlighting any new or changed functionality.

For example: we have launched Walk Me WalkThru in the Price Change Submission functionality which gives the supplier step by step instructions on what to complete and where data needs to be updated on select fields to progress through the screens.

A deep dive into

Scope 3 Value Chain Emissions The Scope 3 Emissions Program Woolworths Group, along with many of our suppliers, have set ambitious targets to change the way we operate to reduce carbon emissions and achieve a more sustainable future. We have now held our initial Supplier Engagement Sessions on understanding Value Chain Emissions (Scope 3).

A specific group of suppliers were invited to join us in trialling a new program that is designed to aid businesses to analyse and respond to their emissions profile. Suppliers are welcome to participate in the next Scope 3 emissions program, and if you would like to express your interest, please reach out to our Supplier Engagement inbox at supplierengagement@woolworths.com.au.

What are some examples of Scope 3 Emissions?

For Woolworths Group, Scope 3 Emissions includes sources within our value chain controlled by our trade partners and activities associated with producing products we sell, including: growing production manufacturing packaging transportation of products to distribution centres and stores

The purpose of the program Reducing our impact on the planet through reduced emissions to create a better tomorrow Through collaborative problem solving & science backed solutions, we aim to achieve large scale reductions.

How the program works At launch we will focus on six categories that significantly contribute to emissions across the value chain, and invite trade partners in each category to understand & measure emissions in their own operations and value chains

Measurement Trial We have now engaged directly with identified suppliers for introductory sessions, with the intention of commencing a measurement trial in Aug - Sept 2022.

As part of the SBTi initiative, Woolworths Group is working to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 19% by 2030. Scope 3 emissions are all indirect emissions generated in the value chain of a company."

Sustainability in Action with Dash Our Trade Partner Charter in Action 2 We behave like business partners Supplier of the Year 2021 Finalist ‘DASH’ is saving wonky fruit, and redefining how we consume carbonated drinks. We sat down with founder Alex Wright to learn more:

Why did you create DASH? In the western world, a third of the fruit and vegetables that are grown go to waste either because they don’t look right, have blemishes, or are overweight…the list goes on. My business partner Jack and I both grew up on farms and saw this waste first-hand, but knew that this discarded fruit still tasted fantastic, even if it weren’t aesthetically pleasing enough for the retailer. So we jumped to action and created DASH, expanded globally, and have now found ourselves stocked at 700 Woolworths stores!

DASH tackles food waste and addresses healthier choices by providing customers with a healthy alternative to sugary soft drinks. We are also a supporter of the ‘Stop Food Waste’ program, which aims to reduce Australia’s food waste by 50% by 2030, which Woolworths is a supporter of too.

How does DASH work?

In Australia, we buy the wonky fruit from Australian farmers, chop it up, infuse it in spring water for 6 to 8 hours, let it rest, and there you have it!

What has it been like to partner with Woolworths?

Partnering with Woolworths was a natural fit for us as they champion wonky fruit with their “The Odd Bunch” campaign, and we are both proud supporters of the Stop Food Waste Australia campaign.

A huge kudos needs to be given to Woolworths for wanting to be involved in this program, as these important programs need the biggest retailers to really make a difference, and thank you to Anthony Pipikios, Taylor Said and Zoe Pipan for working so well with us.

Remedy Drinks opens new manufacturing site Congratulations to our supplier Remedy, who will be launching a new sustainable fermentary in Melbourne this month! Designed to achieve a 5-star Green Star Rating, the facility features several significant sustainability features and initiatives including: Solar power: expected to power daytime operations in full.

Online Grocery Trends 3 key takeaways for suppliers Online supermarket spend is now two and a half times larger than before the pandemic. And the shift online is by no means finished, with online grocery penetration in Australia (18%) still only half that of the US (36%). In some countries nearly 50% of all grocery shopping occurs online.

In a recent presentation to AFGC’s Food and Grocery 2022 event, Quantium CEO Adam Driussi identified some of the lifelong habits being formed by new online grocery shoppers. Here’s what they mean for your business.

Shopping behaviour in the virtual aisle is harder to shift

When customers transition online they become simultaneously more loyal to both the retailer and the brands in that category. This ‘stickier’ environment has significant implications for customer acquisition, justifying greater investment to attract high-value shoppers. It also presents challenges to both trial and conversion for new product development, giving in-store an ongoing and important role in omni-channel routes to market.

“Dry-fresh omnis” shoppers will help drive the next generation of growth

Dry goods categories already over-index online, with customers valuing the convenience of having bulky items regularly delivered to their home while still preferring to choose their own fruit and vegetables in-store.

We expect “dry-fresh shoppers” to form an increasingly larger portion of new omni-channel customers, which will boost demand for larger-format dry goods SKUs whilst driving traffic to smaller, more convenient stores (such as Woolworths Metros) that specialise in fresh foods.

Value checkers demand a re-think of promotions

For a core group of savvy digital shoppers, price comparability is key, and large variances between on-promotion and standard pricing is concerning. For these shoppers, loyalty is best grown through targeted offers on the products that most motivate them, using data that tells us what they want, when they want it and the value they find attractive.

In terms of normal promotional activity, our data suggests that this group prefers smaller bandwidth, longer offer period pricing changes like Woolworths’ recent price drop campaign to less regular, deeper discounting.

Woolworths is number one as voted by our customers For the third year in a row, Woolworths Group has taken out top honours at the 2022 Mozo People’s Choice Awards. As voted by the Australian Public we excelled in the online supermarket category for; Outstanding Customer Satisfaction, Range of Products, Online Shopping Experience, and Click and Collect (the BEST in non-delivery pick-up options). We also brought home awards in the Supermarket category (Product Range) and for Woolworths Insurance (Excellent Customer Service, Sign-up Experience, Most Recommended).

Seedlab Australia supports Australian businesses to start, scale and grow Seedlab Australia is a national Incubator and Accelerator Program for potential new Woolworths suppliers, fully supported by Woolworths, but run independently.

The 6 week Incubator Bootcamp, and 4 month Accelerator Cultivate programs are free for suppliers to undertake, but competitive to access.

Seedlab gets suppliers pitch and retail ready, making the job of the Category and Marketing manager easier, and the process of DIFOT and supply more streamlined for both parties.

Meet Our Team

Jason McQuaid celebrates 30 Years at Woolworths We sat down with Jason, our Commercial Director of Chilled, Deli and Bakery to find out what continues to drive him at Woolworths.

Talk us through your journey here at Woolworths!

I started my first role on the checkouts at North Rockhampton, and then my career at Woolies just grew from there, having now had 15 different roles whilst at Woolworths. For the first 9 years of my career, I had five roles across the Operations team in Queensland. I then relocated to Sydney, and for the last 21 years I’ve been in the Commercial team where I’ve had around 7 roles.

What have been some of your favourite roles and moments?

If I had to pick a stand out it would certainly be the role I’m in now, as being able to lead teams is a fantastic privilege. Some other favourite moments include my first executive appointment to Category Manager in the Meat team, and I loved being the Merchandise Manager for Seafood because I have a passion for seafood and the environment, so it wasn’t hard to like what you did on a daily basis in that role.

From a product point of view I really enjoyed relaunching our Roast Chickens, rolling out our Smarter Choice Pork range and also launching Quilton into our offer.

What moments stand out to you most and have been crucial to shaping who Woolworths is today?

I’ve been through the ups and downs of our business over the last 30 years. One of the things I have learned is that momentum is so important in a business. Around 2016 our business was going through a very challenging period when our major competitor were taking market share off us in a big way. There were some very dark days when we were giving our all and the results were extremely disheartening but we never gave up. We basically had to start from scratch and make a lot of changes to get back on track. To come out the other end even stronger and to see the strength that is this business today is my most pleasing achievement personally.

You have created many fantastic teams whilst working as a Commercial Director for Woolworths - what do you look for when you create a team?

The last couple of years has thrown challenges at us that I would never have even considered previously but the resilience and spirit of our team has been incredible and I’m so proud to be part of this team.

I believe it’s critical to build diversity in teams and also an environment where people can feel safe contributing and sharing their views. The power of a team will 9 times out of 10 beat an individual.

I’m very lucky to be in a leadership role in Woolworths and passionately believe in providing good food for Australian communities working with our Trade Partners.

Events Woolworths Attends Supply Nations’ Connect 2022 During May, some of our senior leaders attended Supply Nation’s annual flagship event, Connect 2022 which brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses with corporate organisations and government departments to celebrate success and discuss opportunities.

We sat down with Adam Bray, General Manager Indigenous Strategy & Affairs and Serena Anson-Cope, Merchandise Manager for UP, to discuss their key takeaways from the event, and what opportunities they identified to help strengthen Woolworth’s partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses.

What were your key takeaways from Connect 2022?

Adam: Firstly, the size and diversity of Indigenous businesses on display at Connect was really impressive.

Also seeing the number of non-Indigenous businesses, large corporations, and government agencies in attendance and ready to do business with Indigenous businesses was fantastic. Something special is happening and Supply Nation Connect is enabling it to occur!

Serena: It was wonderful to meet with these businesses face to face. The suppliers we met have deep connections since childhood tothe ingredients they're using in their products, and I saw that as their business grows, how much this positively impacts their communities who all help to grow supply of those ingredients.

How is Woolworths working to play a significant role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses'?

Adam: Although Woolworths has successfully operated in Australia for almost a century now, only recently have we begun working with a small number Indigenous businesses. Moving forward, we believe we can play a significant role in supporting Indigneous businesses prosper throughout our supply chain and the economy more broadly. That said, it really is about getting the fundamentals right internally and externally to create that enabling environment. This is our immediate focus.

Serena: We are looking to create genuine partnerships with First Nations owned businesses to deliver a curated range for our customers and sustainable growth for both of us. There are a few ways we will go about that including encouraging small suppliers to participate in the Seedlab program which will help them become retail ready and ready to scale their business.

Events Meet our State Trade Managers During recent Voice of Supplier (VOS) listening sessions, suppliers were telling us that they did not know who the STMs were and how to engage with them. In early May, the first time since COVID lockdowns, we were able to host a small group of suppliers and the STMs at our Bella VIsta Support Office. The session discussed ‘What Good Looks Like’ and our ways of working.

How / when should Suppliers engage?

For the first time since the start of the pandemic, we welcomed all of our Grocery Food, Everyday Needs, Chilled, Bakery and Deli and Meat, Poultry and Seafood Suppliers back into our Bella Vista Support office for their Trade Partner Updates!

Frequency should be determined by the STM and vendor depending on the event, season or category. STMs and vendors should be meeting at least quarterly or monthly, and these engagements should be in person or virtually.

Hosting over 500 suppliers in person and more than 1000 more virtually, electricity and buzz was in the air across these four individual events, and we were thrilled to see everyone who came through the doors.

The framework of these conversations should include reviewing previous results, ranking, market share, discussing wins and opportunities and also forward planning.

Our Fruit and Veg Trade Partners also had the opportunity to attend their Trade Partner Update session at HORT Connections in Brisbane.
