THE MOMENT 2022 - 2023 Carthage Theatre Department Presents
IN
Dec. 8-10 | 7:30 P.M. Wartburg Theatre

In The Moment brings to the stage layers of experience and perspective through new and legacy dance works created for and embodied by Carthage dancers. The program features works by regional guest artists and faculty, as well as Carthage’s very own emerging choreographers.

director’s note

Thank you for attending the Department of Theatre’s 2022 dance production, In The Moment. Our title acknowledges dancers’ shared experience of grounding oneself in the moment, in the body, and with one another in space. When we breathe and move together, we are more centered and connected. Tonight’s program includes opportunities for Carthage dancers to embody new works created for them by our guest artists, alongside works that have been re-staged and given new life, and new insights by our dancers. The program features works inspired by a range of perspectives, including regional guest artists and faculty, and Carthage’s very own emerging choreographers. As always, we are grateful for the opportunity to share this moment with you. We appreciate your support and welcome your thoughts afterward!

talk back

For more insights into In The Moment works, please join the Artistic Director and choreographers in a Talk- Back immediately following the Friday, December 9th performance. The Talk- Back will take place in the Wartburg Auditorium. We look forward to addressing viewer’s questions and hearing thoughts about the program.

And yet, we dance: stories that transgress Concept, Direction, Sound Design by Kristina Saldarelli Choreography by Kristina Saldarelli and dancers

Choreographer’s Note: As I began my M.F.A. thesis research this summer, I created a tap solo using an autoethnographic process to explore my childhood dance memories. I uncovered several paradoxical cycles that are still with me today: imitation/authenticity, confinement/freedom, and joy/fear. I have found that autoethnography pairs beautifully with dance. In both forms we study the self to navigate our emotions and in turn, allow our stories to be heard and understood in richer ways. They make space for our lived experiences and self-knowledge to hold merit as they shape the ways we identify ourselves and our sense of belonging.

about the show

What emerged from my solo was the beginnings of a new pedagogical approach that I shared with my students to create their own solos. I am grateful for these dancers whose vulnerability and courage shine bright. I wonder if you’ll see a bit of your own life embedded in our stories.

Fine Arts at Carthage acknowledges that the land on which our building stands is part of the traditional Potawatomi, Sioux, Peoria, Kickapoo, and Miami peoples past, present, and future. These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michiga mi, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place—alive and strong, and this calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
