Two Central High Students Headed to D.C. With Carroll EMC

Emily Dutton and Aanyah Lovett, rising seniors at Central High School, will embark on the Washington Youth Tour (WYT) as delegates of Carroll EMC. The two will travel to Washington, D.C., for the all-expenses-paid, weeklong trip in June.

“For many delegates, this will be the first chance they get to visit Washington, D.C.,” says Ryan Sammon. “So, we fill every second with some sort of activity.”

Since the late 1950s, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association has partnered with statewide organizations like Georgia EMC to send thousands of high school students to the nation’s capital for a week in June every year. The trip, known as the WYT, is Georgia’s oldest youth leadership program and is designed to give delegates a personal understanding of American history and encourage them to become politically aware citizens.

Over the course of seven days, students develop leadership and team-building skills, as well as form lasting friendships while touring historical sites, including Arlington National Cemetery, George Washington's Mount Vernon, Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian Institute and more. They are also given the opportunity to meet with Georgia’s congressional delegation and state senators.

They may go home a little sleep deprived but ironically still full of energy because the trip is just that exciting.”

Applications for the WYT were accepted November of last year through midFebruary for students ages 16 or older attending high school in the cooperative’s service territory or whose primary residence receives power from Carroll EMC. Dutton and Lovett were selected as the top two candidates after applying and participating in a panel interview.

This year’s trip takes place June 14 through June 21.

Add Lawn Tools to Your Spring Cleaning List

As you open the windows and start springcleaning your home, add another item to your to-do list: Clean your lawn tools.

Your electric lawnmower, weed trimmer and hedge trimmer have been cooped up and unused for months. And you’ll need to do more than knock the dust off them.

Cordless lawnmowers and power tools need regular cleaning and maintenance, so they operate properly. The good news? They’re easier to take care of than gas-powered tools.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your specific models, but generally:

• Remove the tool’s battery before you get started and slip on a sturdy pair of gloves to protect your hands.

• Use a dry cloth to wipe down the device and remove cobwebs, dust, loose dirt and dead bugs.

• With a plastic scraper or bristle brush, scrub off dried mud and grass on the device, even underneath.

• Damp clean the machine all over with a wet cloth, but steer clear of the motor. Take extra care around any blades.

• Look for cracks on the casing and determine if the tool is still usable. Check that the handle is tight and sturdy. Inspect any blades for rust.

• Fully charge all tools, replacing the battery if it has gotten damaged during the winter.

1. The 2023 figures reflect the resources that were supplied for the year ending December 31, 2023.

2. The 2024 figures are prospective and reflect the power that we have contracted to provide. Actual figures may vary according to resource availability. We will annually report to you before August 1 of next year in the form of a Historic Product Content Label the actual resource mix of the electricity you purchased.

3. New Renewables come from generation facilities that first began commercial operation within the past 15 years. This product includes generation from a facility that began commercial operation within the past 15 years or is approved for extended use by Green-e Energy.

For comparison, the 2024 average mix of resources supplying Carroll EMC includes: coal (6%), nuclear (25%), oil (0%), natural gas (60%), hydroelectric (2%) and renewables (7%).
