Local Student to Compete for Statewide Scholarship

Carroll EMC selected Kaleb Chambers of Bowdon to represent the Co-op as its semifinalist for the Walter Harrison Scholarship. Chambers will compete at the state level for one of 16 $1,000 scholarships to use toward college tuition.

The Walter Harrison Scholarship, a program sponsored by Georgia EMC, the Cooperative’s statewide association, is awarded to outstanding students seeking a post-secondary education at any two- or four-year university, college or technical institute in Georgia. To be eligible, students must be accepted or enrolled in an undergraduate program and complete an application with their electric cooperative. Academic standing, scholastic honors, community involvement and financial need are all considered when choosing a semifinalist.

“To ensure fairness and maintain impartiality in the evaluation process, we have a representative from a neighboring cooperative judge the applications,” says Rolando Benitez, Community Relations Representative and Member Advocate for Carroll EMC. “We are very confident in the judge’s selection and believe Kaleb has the heart to win over the statewide judges as well.”

Chambers, a senior with a love for agriculture and politics, plans to combine his two passions by attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness and later attending law school. His end goal is to one day become an agricultural lawyer and an elected official.

Having already held office in organizations like the Future Business Leaders of America and Future Farmers of America as well as actively sharpening his soft skills through the Carroll County Junior Chamber of Commerce, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, Susan A. Mabry Citizens Academy and Emerging County Leaders Program, Chambers is well on his way to fulfilling his dreams.

“At the end of the day, I am a man who wants to leave this world a little better than how I found it,” Chambers says. A scholarship committee comprised of directors, managers and key staff at Georgia’s 41 EMCs will judge each semifinalist application to select the 16 scholarship recipients. Statewide winners will be announced on or before April 1.

A well-designed landscape can add beauty to your home and reduce home heating and cooling costs. Plant deciduous trees with high, spreading crowns to the south of your home to block sunlight in the summer and reduce the need for air conditioning. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the winter, allowing sunlight to warm your home. Plant evergreen trees and shrubs with low crowns to block winter winds. Dense evergreen trees and shrubs planted to the north and northwest are the most common type of windbreak and can help lower energy used for home heating.

Warm Weather

Brings Out Scammers

Carroll EMC will never send anyone to your house to ask you if you need work done. And when someone does come for a legitimate reason, you’ll see a uniform, a truck with the Cooperative’s logo on it and valid identification. Springtime is scam season. Don’t be surprised if you get telephone calls, uninvited visitors looking for work and loads of door hangers offering landscaping, roofing, painting and homerepair services.

Your best bet: Say no to all of them. If you need work done around your house, visit the website of the state agency responsible for licensing contractors, or join a contractor referral network that recommends only contractors who are licensed, insured, bonded and experienced.

A few other tips:

• Do not pay in cash and do not pay upfront. Instead, work out a payment schedule that allows you to pay in increments as work is completed.

, so it’s best

• Get bids from three reputable companies before you start. If you get one offer that’s much lower than the other two, something is probably amiss.

• Don’t fall for these two lines: “I just finished a job at your neighbor’s house, and I’ll give you a good price if you hire me today, because I’m already in the neighborhood,” or “I have leftover materials from a job I just did, and I’ll sell/install them here for a deep discount because I don’t need them.”

• Hiring contractors can be expensive. Don’t waste your money on one who’s not licensed and legitimate.
