“I want to share a word of encouragement to anyone who is still waiting on Crossbeam to install their internet service. It is SO worth the wait! The fact that I can type and send this while sitting in my living room and not standing at my window for a cell signal is an understatement. I am beyond amazed at how fast the service is and how everything loads instantly. Thank you for bringing the future to our doorsteps!” –Danielle

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIP OF THE MONTH

During winter months, ensure your home is well sealed to reduce the need for excessive heating. Seal air leaks around your home and add insulation where needed to save up to 10% on annual energy bills. Install weatherstripping on exterior doors and apply caulk around windows. Check attic insulation levels and hire a qualified contractor if additional insulation is required. Source: energystar.gov

Apply Today for The 2024 Washington Youth Tour The 2024 Washington Youth Tour is scheduled for June 14-21. This all-expenses-paid, eight-day event will feature visits to and tours of some of the United States’ most iconic and historic venues, such as George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Visit carrollemc.com for more details and to complete the application. Applications are due February 16.

Once a year, high school students are selected by their local EMCs to represent Georgia as delegates on the Youth Tour. This topnotch leadership experience and tour of Washington, D.C., includes meetings with state and national leaders, leadership training and visits to many major sites. “This year’s tour was a huge success!” says Andy Paul, WYT Director and Public Relations Representative with Georgia EMC. “I would describe it as a connection-making trip, as students from rural areas of our state connected with students from urban areas, and they made lifelong friendships.”

2023 Tour Highlights:

“It was so great to see students connect their local EMC with opportunities like this for learning and success for their local communities,” Paul adds, “and all on a trip that is at no cost to the students!”

DO'S & DON'TS DO

Here are some great safety lessons to teach:

AROUND ELECTRICITY

Start discussions about electrical equipment and safety when children are young!

Stay inside after a storm in case there are downed power lines. Place a cellphone on a bedside table, not on bedding or under a pillow. Find another tree to climb if an overhead power line is nearby. Fly kites, drones or other RC toys in an open area away from overhead power lines.

DON’T

Go near a downed power line. Use or set plugged-in items near water, including a sink, pool or bathtub. Go near or enter a substation to retrieve a toy or pet. Try to free an object that is stuck in a power line.
