Letter from Iris

Dear friends, readers and community members,

Four years ago I walked up the creaky back stairs to the second floor of Livingston Manor Free Library to join a Manor Ink meeting. For the next three and a half years the Library was almost my second home, just with a thrilling number of books. My first article for Manor Ink was about the Trout Parade and I was amazed when it was made the cover. Fast forward four years-- I have written more articles than I can count, photographed major events and worked with my mentor Carolyn Bivins to layout and design the pages of Manor Ink. So to say the least, I was sad to see Manor Ink take a hiatus, but my hope has been that it would start back up again with new energy.

I just finished my first year of college as an early admit at SUNY Sullivan. Summer brought about the usual buzz, but I realized I didn’t know what was happening in Town. When I was working on Manor Ink in the past, I was up-to-date on events locally.

Now there was no paper to read about opportunities, new businesses, or other Livingston Manor news.

So when there was talk about restarting Manor Ink I was excited. Ultimately I decided I would take the Library Board up on their offer to become Community Coordinator and Editor-In-Chief for the next year.

Livingston Manor is a speck on the map, a hamlet on the edge of the Catskills, but what we have as a community is beautiful. We have come together through floods and fires to support each other, which makes us stand out. That’s why I feel that Manor Ink is so important. It’s a

way for people to know what is happening nearby, it’s an outlet for young people like myself, even when I was 13, to feel like I can make a difference and contribute to my community. It is an opportunity for young people to develop skills and share their voices in the world about things that matter to them. And today, with all of the differently opinionated media outlets, Manor Ink is a positive, youth publication that is focused right here on Sullivan County. It brings generations together in a mutually beneficial relationship, adult mentors and young writers and photographers, to distribute positive news to Livingston Manor. I hope that Manor Ink will continue to serve as a “glue” that binds our community together.

I am so excited to see this special summer issue hit the streets! We will start monthly publications again in September and are working to raise funds needed now. We encourage all young people (grades 7 - 12) who are interested in writing, photography or layout and design to signup and join us! We need your voice! We also want adults who might be interested in contributing financial sponsorships or volunteering as mentors to assist our student staff writers as needed with their articles.

This year we will be working with the school to recruit more young voices, while still keeping it fun and fully youth driven. My vision for Manor Ink is simple, a place for youth to share their talents and voices in the community.

So enjoy this special issue of Manor Ink. I hope we have you on the edge of your seat with excitement for the next one!

Beaverkill Covered Bridge Restored

The Beaverkill Covered Bridge has been reopened after two years of renovations to this historic structure.

The the DOT needed to rebuild the bridge due to safety concerns— the historic bridge was built in 1865.

Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez said, “The Beaverkill Covered Bridge has been an important transportation link in one of Sullivan County’s most bucolic and beautiful regions for a century and a half, and thanks to the diligent efforts of New York State and its Department of Transportation, this historic structure will continue to serve both residents and visitors for decades to come. Thankfully, both its functionality and its grace have been preserved and improved, and I am proud to have such a fine example of the State’s ongoing investment in our infrastructure.”

The historic Beaverkill Covered Bridge reopening was well attended on June 21 at 11:00 am. The Department of Transportation utilized almost 2 million dollars to refurbish the structure. It is one of nearly 30 historic covered bridges in New York State.

Library Board Transitions

This spring, the Livingston Manor Free Library Board welcomed its newest trustees Michele Hemmer and Amy Hines.

Both women had served as community representatives to help the Library with its search process for a new Library Director.

Jerold Ehrlich, long-time trustee and committed Library volunteer, stepped down this past spring when he and Vivian Ehrlich moved away to be closer to family.

About the New Trustees: Michele’s family has lived in Livingston Manor for 26 years. She teaches kindergarten in LMCS, and with her husband Chip, is raising three children - Brad, 22, Alli, 19, and Daniel who is 13. Michele has run the Library’s summer reading program for many years. She also serves on the Board of Ride 2 Survive Sullivan County as well the Temple Agudas Achim Board. She graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a teaching degree and earned her Master’s Degree from the College of New Rochelle in special education.

Amy moved to Livingston Manor in 2011 to marry Dave Forshay, a sportsman, retired entrepreneur and resident since 1982. She became involved in Livingston Manor Rotary and served as its president in 2015/16. She is an annual volunteer for Cornell Cooperative Extension as a 4-H judge and regularly assists the Time and the Valleys Museum in Neversink. She is Senior Vice President of The Alford Group, a national consulting firm serving not-forprofits. She graduated from Hampshire College and earned her Master’s Degree from Duke University in public policy.

Mills Wins Gold

The American Advertising Awards, an annual three staged contest for advertising, marketing, and graphic designers, is difficult to win. Every year, over 40,000 people enter their graphic designs, hoping to win the ADDY award. This time, it was our own Farrah Mills from Livingston Manor, who, through hard work and imagination, managed to do it.

The ADDYs are awarded to groups who compete with their graphic designs and advertising campaigns. Farrah was entered into the student part of the competition by one of her college professors, where students create mock companies and design their brand identities from scratch.

She created a fake brewery, coffee roaster, and restaurant called “Backwood Brews”, and created an ad campaign, which was made to look and feel like it was for a real company. At first, in the local level, she won the gold.

Then she won the silver at district level, then gold again at national.

New Restaurant & Pub Now Open on Main Street

Farrah had never even heard of graphic design until the end of her senior year. She is thankful to Jessica Mall, who inspired her to continue on her path, and to the community, who donated money so she could go to the national contest in New Orleans.

To students who want to continue on the art career, she says, ”It all comes down to working hard.” Along with Farrah’s friends and family, we are all proud of this 2015 Manor graduate’s success.

The long awaited restaurant The Kaatskeller opened on Main St. Livingston Manor recently.

Happy crowds enjoyed wood-fired pizza, wings and other delectable dishes at the lovely outdoor seating while other customers played a game of bocce or sat by the outdoor firepit. There is also a space for 40+ people indoors and a bar upstairs, so do check it out.

The menu and hours are subject to change, so check on Facebook at The Kaatskeller. Oh, and for the fans- yes, they will be open year round.

“Who Let The Trout Out”

If you haven’t noticed, the annual Trout Parade in Livingston Manor is a pretty big deal for our community. It draws in large, diverse crowds that are all extremely excited to watch the big event in our small town.

Funds raised from activities at the parade -including sponsors, vendor fees, tee-shirt and button sales-- go to support the Livingston Manor Central School arts programs.

With the large crowd there is quite a lot of demand for exciting floats and performances. And when there’s demand, there’s supply. This year’s emcee was Wade St. Germaine and the whole event was produced by Claire Coleman of the Catskill Art Society.

The parade is stocked with floats and figures so interesting you can’t take your eyes off of them. This year’s fishy theme was Super Heroes. It’s definitely the larger objects that will really catch your eye though.

From the large trout carried by six strong volunteers, to the NACL’s original puppets, there’s so much you can barely choose what to look at. And when you’re not looking at the big floats your eyes are naturally drawn to the band directed by the middle/high school band teacher and director Daniel Smith.

This band, along with Paprika (a yearly treat), NFS, Rolling River Cafe, and the Johnny Jules Band, plays music that fills your ears with great sounds as the parade goes by. I’m very glad that these bands were here because without them we would sit in silence, which would definitely feel very awkward.

The Fun Page of Happiness Is Changing

by Osei Helper / Fun Page of Happiness Editor / Manor Ink With Manor Ink coming back, we decided the Fun Page of Happiness should have some adjustments. We will be choosing a piece of artwork from CAS (Catskill Art Society) to feature in the paper. The name of the piece and artist will be shown as well as a recommendation to visit CAS to see the piece in person. Also, we will now be asking the community to submit their own art. Some of the submissions allowed will include drawings, poems, short-stories, and photos. When submitting a piece, you can include a name of the author, artist, etc. and/or a title (please do not take credit for a piece that is not by you). If no name is included the piece will be an anonymous submission.

Submit your pieces to the folder at the front desk and only submit short stories and poems to manorink@gmail.com. I will go through all submissions and take each into consideration.

So if your piece isn’t featured just know it was taken into consideration.

Catskill Rivers and Trails at Morgan Outdoors Have you seen the special exhibition of photographs from the book “Land of Little Rivers” by Austin McK. Francis at Morgan Outdoors?

The exhibition includes stunningly beautiful photographs of the Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, East Branch, Esopus and West Kill by Enrico Ferorelli, on loan from the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. And the map display illustrates the wealth of public trails throughout the Catskill Park.

A tribute to the natural beauty of the Catskills and a great room to relax or host a meeting.

Congregation Agudas Achim News

by Mary Inghrim Thank you to Shirley Schwartz for the donation of two oil paintings in memory of her husband Martin. These paintings, which hung in their home, now proudly adorn the walls of the upstairs lobby for all to appreciate. The Schwartz family were among the first Jewish residents of Livingston Manor and were prominent community leaders for over a century.

Joe & Mia Koerner have dedicated themselves to beautifying the property around the synagogue. On your next visit take a good look at our living fence, which was made possible by their labor, securing an artist to make the symbols reflecting the gifts we receive from God to make our life possible.

In addition they obtained a grant from the county which will reimburse us $1,000 of the project’s cost. Mia is a member of the Newman family; they owned a hotel and were prominent synagogue members.

Age Out Loud

It was called “pre-adolescence.” {Freud called it latency, but that’s a different story.} Now I find my self in a time I call “pre-old.” {Freud didn’t call it anything, but Jung did.} While there are distinct signs of being past my prime, there are also signs that I’m entering another “late-onset” prime.

Dedication Ceremony in Memory of Elaine Fettig at Riverside Park

On July 1, 2017, friends and community members joined the Fettig family to honor Elaine Fettig. She was remembered for the work she did for Roscoe and all over Sullivan County. A tree was planted, a bench was placed and a sign for Fettig Lane was unvieled at the entrance to Riverside Park in Roscoe.

“She had a way of moving us forward. It’s like we are missing a part of the Catskills”, said SCVA President Roberta Byron-Lockwood.

BIRDS It seems that “they’ve” changed the birds,

or added new ones. I used to know the names of all of the birds who came to our feeders, and lots who didn’t. But now there are new kinds that I cannot name. There is also a new kind of squirrel.

“They” are the trees and air and grass -- the outdoors. Or whoever provides birds.

Having grown up a city kid, one of the ways that I fit myself into the outdoors, found ways not to be overwhelmed in the country, was by learning the names of things. A sycamore.

A rosy breasted grosbeak. I took whole semesters on mosses and algaes in college. And

got a tree identification book. Recognizing living things, being able to name them, helped me feel more at home. Especially birds, because they are so lovely.

Now that there are new ones, I find that I’m ok not knowing what they are. I have a perfectly good bird book -- several in fact.

And pretty good small binoculars. But it seems just as well to look at the birds, notice that I can’t name them, and enjoy them anyway.

Too much trouble to look them up, and it seems not to matter as much as it did once.

This is less true with animals; yesterday, on my way to get the Sunday Times, I saw a short tailed weasel. I knew it was not a wood-

chuck, but that was as far as I got. My husband Larry looked up pictures of fishers, minks, weasels, each a possible creature around here.

We realized it was a short tailed weasel. I wondered why weasels signify sneakiness? It was brown and sleek and appearing in the sunshine.

Is no longer wanting to name the birds a sign of withdrawal? Will other wild creatures become un-nameable in time? I think it is a sign of feeling fine about the outdoors even when I can’t name the parts. Also, not needing to know the names and watching them with undiminished pleasure is a gift I give myself.

I forgive myself for not knowing and not needing to know.

Town of Rockland Town Board News

by Marge Feuerstein / Manor Ink Mentor The Town Board of Rockland held its July meeting on Thursday the 6th at Town Hall. The first order of business was a short review of correspondence. An anti-harassment policy was received from NYMIR, a provider of insurance and risk management services for municipalities. An energy and safety review was received by NYSEG, which suggested only a few minor corrections needed in the Town Hall.

An announcement from Roscoe Brewery that they were holding a music festival on Aug 12 was received. Under old business, Supervisor Eggleton advised the Board that they did not qualify for the grant they were seeking for Phase 2 of the Roscoe sewer improvement. A survey found that fewer than 60% of the residents, the threshold required, were considered low or moderate income. Other types of grants will now be pursued.

The topic of health care for Town employees was discussed in relation to seven employees who will be retiring in a few years after 25 years of service, as well for all Town employees. It was agreed that a great deal more study has to be undertaken, but some decisions will have to be made prior to the next budget vote.

The Town’s legal department is pursuing matters related to practices by two specific businesses in Town and will be advising at a future meeting. The last item in new business was a proposal by Supervisor Eggleton that a plaque be installed in the new sewer plant in honor of the former Supervisor Edward Weitmann who had pushed for this improvement.

Eggleton also suggested that a dedication and plaque unveiling be held at the appropriate time.

After a few remarks by the heads of Highway, Water/Sewer and Code Enforcement and some comments and questions by a few residents who were in attendance, the Board went into executive session to discuss a highway contract.

Library Notes

by Kristin Fowler / Library Director / Manor Ink The Livingston Manor Free Library continues to be a thriving community hub during the summer months. We welcome back our summer residents and continue to appreciate all of our wonderful, local patrons.

The library offers free 24 hour wifi, computers, computer assistance, fax service, copying/printing services, interlibrary loan, books, a browsing magazine collection, authoritative databases, a community resources guide, The Sullivan County Democrat, and The Times-Herald Record.

In addition to our more visible offerings, our patrons have access through the Rockland Catskill Library System (RCLS) consortium, to a variety of online databases.

Many patrons aren’t aware that we have online access to these rich resources, like Novelist Plus and Ancestry.com New York Records.

Novelist Plus, a readers’ advisory service, will help you locate your next summer read based on your interests. Searching the database is user friendly and it can be searched in a variety of ways including, keyword, “read alikes”, common core, and award winners. You’ll find recommendations for books for every age and interest.

If you’re interested in genealogy, Ancestry.com New York Records is a database you’ll find interesting and useful. The database provides users access to an abundance

of family history records online and free. Descriptions of the records as well as the holding organizations are provided through the links and logos on the Ancestry.com New York web page.

Onward With Upward

by Emily Ball / Manor Ink A new brewery is coming to town.

It will be the third brewery in the Town of Rockland and it will give people a full experience of our town’s special features.

Three local friends have joined together to create the business. They are Dana Ball, David Walton, and Ed Waryha. They “want something great for Livingston Manor,” said Dana Ball.

It will be called Upward Brewing Co., which refers to the historical mashing technique european brewers called “upward infusion” It’s going to be a farm brewery, which means they grow their own ingredients. The brewery will feature a brewhouse and operation, including a cafe, tasting room, beer garden, a working farm, and 120 acres of forest with hiking and biking trails.

Dana says, “the operation will be large

enough to supply beer for the Catskills and NYC.” He also says “the food in the cafe will include a bratwurst grill, burritos, and gourmet grilled cheeses.” The partners are happy that they were able to get a property with natural spring water and mountain views for visitors to enjoy.

Upward Brewing Co. will be located at 173 Main St., Livingston Manor. The only thing there currently is a driveway leading up to “beer mountain,” the site where the building will be located. In May they broke ground and so far have leveled the site for the building and the parking areas.

They are not sure when they will open.
