Aging in Place AD330 Fall 2023 Caroline stuckey Intro
programming
The task for this project was to modify an existing home to be flexible and adaptable to accommodate changes in health occurring naturally as we age. Key considerations were to be sustainable, accessible, comfortable, safe, and overall to create a ‘dream home’ for the Smith couple.
During the research process, two interviews were conducted with two 70+ individuals about how aging has affected them. Below are key takeaways that guided the design process. • Home is about comfort and safety • Space to accommodate loved ones is something many people value as they age • Nature is an important addition to the design to provide grounding and purpose for this population
Concept Statement This project takes inspiration from tree bark and the juxtaposition of the straight and curved lines found in this element of nature. Trees represent strength, and the bark protecting them has beauty and depth within its essence. Tree bark will be depicted conceptually in this project through application of color and texture as well as use of space and the home’s direct connection to elements of nature.

Project Goals
Diagramming
1
Provide a space with an emphasis on comfort. Implement sustainable and efficient elements to minimize both maintenance and negative environmental impacts. 3 Deliver a design where loved ones can visit with ease. 4 Add a sunroom for a connection to nature, as per homeowners request. 5 Add accessibility opportunities without creating a sterile or institutional feeling. 2
These sketches were created as a part of the initial planning process. They are a depiction of how the space would be portrayed through scale, movement, and texture.
ACCESSIBLE + sustainable FEATURES 36” Doorways for wheelchair clearance Zero threshold shower entrance Carpet tiles to eliminate flooring transitions “Comfort height” raised toilets Low flow toilets for water conservation LED light fixtures
kitchen This kitchen has ample lighting with minimally reflective surfaces to reduce glare, and windows into the sunroom out into the backyard. With natural a natural stone backslash, quartz counter tops, and rattan pendants, this kitchen has numerous connections to nature.
Living Room
In the living room there is an inset area rug to prevent tripping hazards while still adding warmth. A green roman clay painted accent wall adds color, texture, and ample seating for loved ones to gather.
Materials and Finishes This project utilizes materials with rich texture and colors from nature. Various species of wood and shades of green reflect the concept of tree bark that is displayed through resilient and textile materials.
