1933 Around 60 credit unions existed in North Carolina. 1934 During the Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act into law, creating a national system to charter and supervise federal credit unions.
1962 A new “Ninety Day” renewable loan service was made available to CTCU members.
Carolinas Telco Credit Union (CTCU) formed when deposits were being taken in change and loose bills at the original “Old Dial Building” on North Caldwell St. in Charlotte, NC, to serve personnel of the Bell System. Mrs. Minnie Bell Stone operated this office on a part-time volunteer basis. It’s rumored that she stood in the lunch line collecting change to encourage savings.
1940 Over 120 credit unions existed in North Carolina. 1937 The Board of Directors elected to become a state-chartered credit union. CTCU makes its first loan to a member for a tonsillectomy.
1974 Second CTCU branch is opened in Raleigh, NC. 1978 The year of convenience took hold and CTCU began offering Visa® credit cards.
1986 CTFCU began offering ATM cards to use at the new Automated Teller Machines across the U.S. CTFCU holds its first new car sale.
2000 Online banking with NetBranch is offered to members. CTFCU branch on Outlet Pointe Blvd. in Columbia, SC, is opened. 2005 CTFCU branch in Cornelius, NC, is opened.
1987 CTFCU Automated Teller Machines became available. 1988 CTFCU branch in Charleston, SC, is opened. 1990 CTFCU branch in Gastonia, NC, is opened.
1980 CTFCU branch on Central Ave. in Charlotte, NC, is opened 1979 CTCU converted from a state charter to a federal charter and was re-named Carolinas Telco Federal Credit Union (CTFCU). 1977 CTCU branch on Crisman St. in Charlotte, NC, is opened in a trailer.
1997 CTFCU joins the internet with ctelco.org. CTFCU branch on Sharon Rd. in Charlotte, NC, is opened.
2017 The CTFCU Legacy Scholasrship was created.
2008 CTFCU call center begins to provide members with 24/7, “one-stop” telephone service Rewards Checking and Health Savings Accounts were introduced.
2006 CTFCU converted to a TIP (Trade, Industry, and Profession) charter opening its field of membership to all telecommunications employees, retirees and family members in North and South Carolina.
1993 CTFCU branch in Greenville, SC, is opened.
2016 Disaster Relief Loans helped over 300 members affected by Hurricane Matthew.
CTFCU offered an “NFL loan” when the Carolinas caught NFL fever.
