I look forward to welcoming you to our 2013 Festival, The French Connection. Our 76th annual Summer Festival includes concerts at venues throughout Carmel, Monterey and Pebble Beach. We open on Saturday with Fauré's exquisite Requiem at the Sunset Theater in Carmel and follow it with Bach's Christmas Oratorio in its entirety on Sunday, bringing it back as a mainstay of our Bach repertoire in an interpretation both light and lively. Monday is the string concerto evening with our leader Peter Hanson. On Tuesday, David Gordon, in his 25th Anniversary year, and I present a program of familiar and also unusual french music through the centuries. You will be happy to hear that we are returning to the Carmel Mission Basilica on Wednesday evening with a choral celebration. We then “cross over” to jazz and Bach on Thursday night and our final concert balances colorful French baroque music with the extraordinary Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique played in period style. There is such variety this season that you should not miss these festival weeks in the incomparable beauty of Carmel-by-the-Sea. I hope to see you in July!

Artistic Director and Principal Conductor One of Europe’s most versatile and creative conductors, Paul Goodwin returns for his third season as the Festival’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Based near London, his conducting credits span the globe from Europe to Asia to the United States, where his passion for innovative programming and pairings of old and new music have been met with high acclaim. A Handel expert and early music specialist, Goodwin is at the forefront of the Early Music Revival.

The Carmel Bach Festival’s Gala C’est Magnifique is the prelude to the Carmel Bach Festival’s 2013 season. This year we celebrate our beloved Festival Dramaturge David Gordon and honor his 25th anniversary with the Festival. The evening will feature live performances by world-renowned mandolinists Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg who wowed our audiences last season. Carmel Valley Ranch’s award-winning Executive Chef Tim Wood will create a dinner extraordinaire featuring local, sustainable ingredients and true farm-to-table cooking accented by fine wines. The festivities will continue as we showcase a brief live auction offering several once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Last year our Gala auction enabled the Festival to expand our reach on stage and in our local communities. This year, with your help, we hope to build on that success.
