Festival

2012 Annual Report

Mission The Festival’s mission is to celebrate the works, inspiration and ongoing influence of Johann Sebastian Bach worldwide by immersing audiences in a festival experience integrating music, education and ideas. The Carmel Bach Festival (CBF) began in 1935 as a four-day series of concerts at the Sunset School Auditorium and the Carmel Mission Basilica. Over the years, it grew to a three-week celebration of concerts, recitals, master classes, lectures, and open rehearsals, and in 2009 the Festival was shortened to two weeks. Under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Paul Goodwin and Executive Director Debbie Chinn, the organization offers innovative artistic programming across all concerts, off-season activities to expand access outside Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula, and is taking strategic risks to cultivate younger and more diverse participants.

Letter from the board president I am pleased to present the Carmel Bach Festival 2012 Annual Report. 2012 was our 75th season, themed Spheres of Influence to mark our part in celebrating the works, inspiration and ongoing influence of J. S. Bach. It has been our mission and pleasure to keep this wondrous and timeless music alive, available and enjoyed in an atmosphere imbued with fun and spirit inherent in a festival. The commemorative edition of the 2012 program book included a brief history highlighting the story of the Bach Festival founders Dene Denny and Hazel Watrous, two women imbued with creative vision for the performing arts in Carmel and energy and entrepreneurial spirit to implement their vision. Their influence is evident still in the abundance of music and theater in Carmel today—Their legacy is highly visible in the continuation of Carmel Bach Festival—not just long-lived, but still vibrant and exciting. But, even as we celebrated our history, we looked forward and envisioned the future of the Festival. In 2012 we recognized Paul Goodwin’s commitment to the Festival as well as the scope of his work as he was named Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Mr. Goodwin continues to introduce internationally renowned soloists and innovative programming, always staying rooted in the music which remains the core of our Festival. The 2012 season featured the works of J.S. Bach, of those that influenced Bach and of composers he inspired throughout the following generations. Musical offerings spanned centuries of music, including a commissioned piece by composer, Curt Cacioppo. In 2012 Debbie Chinn joined us as Executive Director, bringing significant experience in arts administration and a myriad of ideas for deeper community involvement and innovative ways to stimulate audience growth. In celebration of the 75th season, the Bach Festival initiated a gala which was highly successful and raised $160,000. In line with other arts presenters nationally, 35% of our income is earned revenue coming mainly from ticket sales. We count on the philanthropic spirit of our patrons. And, we were not disappointed. Generous individuals, business sponsors, foundations, hospitality and travel partners and program advertisers came through again, adding well over one million dollars in donated revenue through grants, sponsorships and donations. Carmel Bach Festival moved into 2013 with a healthy balance of inspiration, vision and realism—As I write you from the perspective well into 2013, I can report continuing fiscal health, community engagement initiatives launched and an organizational capacity assessment completed. We have the tools and are positioned to map out our strategic plan for the next 5 years. Thank you for your partnership, patronage and sharing our belief in the vital role the arts play in a forging a balanced life. Betsey H. Pearson, President Carmel Bach Festival Board of Directors 6 ::

2012 Young Musicians

Young Musicians The Young Musician program provides a special opportunity for aspiring young vocalists and instrumentalists to work in a professional environment. This year, 21 Young Musicians ages 7–19 performed a Baroque concert onstage at the Sunset Center in Carmel during the 10th anniversary of this program. Youth Chorus The Bach Festival Youth Chorus is a seven-week, high-intensity choral program for middle and high school students. It offers the unique opportunity of singing with a professional orchestra and chorale led by nationally and internationally acclaimed conductors in major works. This year, the Youth Chorus, comprised of 21 students from the Monterey Peninsula, gave performances at senior and community centers, Rancho Cielo Youth Campus in Salinas, and Bach Festival main and twilight concerts.

2012 Virginia Best Adams Fellows

Virginia Best Adams Vocal Master Class Established in 1984 by family and friends of Virginia Best Adams, the VBA Master Class was established as an endowment to honor her 80th birthday. More than 100 young professional singers from around the world audition for four prestigious spots and a four-week series of public master classes, private coachings and career mentoring from highly distinguished artists/teachers. The 2012 season included six public master classes and a culminating showcase at the Sunset Center in Carmel.

Community Connections

Oldemeyer Center concert patrons

Oldemeyer Center The free annual Oldemeyer Center concert in Seaside is a partnership dating back to 1986. Musicians from the Festival’s professional ensemble, including Tower Brass, Virginia Best Adams Vocal Fellows, and chamber groups, performed for approximately 350 people. A reception following the performance allowed Seaside and surrounding area patrons to meet and connect with the musicians. Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL) The three-year collaborative partnership with YOSAL included a workshop and demonstrations by several Bach Festival musicians at Salinas High School for all of YOSAL’s students. YOSAL hosted dinner for musicians, students and their families, followed by a free community concert with approximately 325 audience members in attendance. Community Access In 2005 the Carmel Bach Festival established partnerships with local youth and service groups to share what the Festival offers with those who for any reason have less access. The program allows free access to main concerts and recitals. In 2012, the Bach Festival distributed 112 tickets to local organizations.

Community Engagement continued‌

2012 Rancho Cielo

Rancho Cielo Through a partnership begun in 2010, the Youth Chorus traveled to Rancho Cielo Youth Campus in Salinas and performed a 45-minute concert for approximately 50 Rancho Cielo participants. After the concert, the youth from both organizations participated in a facilitated conversation and a shared lunch as a way to connect with each other and break down barriers between people living in different communities. Senior Centers The Senior Series was founded in response to requests by area senior facilities that wanted to give their residents access to the Festival but were unable to transport them to venues. In 2012, free performances were presented at Carmel Valley Manor and Forest Hill Manor in Pacific Grove. These audiences have shared that they are especially appreciative of the opportunity to experience the Festival “in house, as many were Bach Festival attendees over the years, but are now unable to attend. Church services Each year professional musicians from the orchestra and chorale perform during local church services as a way to connect our musicians with local communities through world-class music. In 2012, multiple musicians performed at 13 local churches.

2012 Flash Mob

Carmel Plaza Flash Mob During the Festival, eight Tower Brass musicians staged themselves on different levels of Carmel Plaza and gave a surprise performance for 150-200 patrons. Several members of the Carmel Bach Festival board and staff distributed promotional rack cards with Festival information to the attentive audiences, and a local news team from KSBW covered the event.

Music and Ideas 2012 Open Rehearsal

In 2012, Music Director Paul Goodwin led four open rehearsals that were free to the public and attracted average audiences of 300-400 people per rehearsal. David Gordon, Festival Dramaturge, presented 14 free pre-concert lectures before each main concert. Curt Cacioppo, commissioned composer for the 2012 Festival, and John Wineglass, EMMY award-winning composer and musician each presented thought-provoking lectures that offered audiences greater insight into their creative processes and the music. Dr. Todd Samra, Director of Music at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Carmel, led a free panel with some of the Festival’s professional vocalists about their lives, their careers and the challenges they face as purveyors of 18th century music in the modern age. The “You Share the Stage” event was led by two Festival musicians who demonstrated and discussed the differences between modern and baroque brass instruments, including valve configurations unique to each, the effects on sounds, and historical usage.

Don and Carol Hilburn at the Harmony House dinner

Harmony house dinner In the history of the Carmel Bach Festival there has never been a more lavish or spectacular celebration than the Baroque Christmas at Harmony House of 2012! Conceived and funded by generous and funloving Festival patrons Don and Carol Hilburn, this sumptuous banquet for the senses took place in an iconic setting for lovers of Carmel Bach: the Dolores Street home built by founders Dene Denny and Hazel Watrous. When Don and Carol realized they had purchased this historic home in, they enthusiastically dove into the experience of Bach in Carmel. Their unwavering support and patronage over the years has been a gracious boon to the Festival. Not surprisingly, the demand for tickets for their Christmas extravaganza at Harmony House proved great. So the couple big-heartedly gifted the Festival with two fundraising evenings instead of one. Early in the year, they enlisted their good friend, designer Karen Nelson, to oversee the decorations for the event. Immersing herself in Baroque period style, Karen created three visually extravagant settings for the dinner guests. The European Table was adorned with a Cavalier statue centerpiece along with mercury glass that originated in Bohemia. The Venetian Table reflected the colorful opulence of the masked balls of Vivaldi’s famed canaled city. The exotic and elaborate Pagoda Room drew inspiration from the ornate Chinoiserie of the period. The home’s spacious music room, with its unique viewing balcony, was festooned with lights, banners, ornaments and great swaths of fabric and color. Rich and royal table settings bedazzled the eyes. Cherished wines from Don’s own cellar complemented an exquisite seven-course meal served with regal panache. Gorgeous live music filled the room by Bach, Biber, Vivaldi, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Violinist Rachal Evans and mezzo-soprano Sally Anne Russell graced the evening with their loving virtuoso brilliance in collaboration with pianist Kevin Smith. At dinner’s close Harmony House filled with choral song as everyone joined the artists for a round of carols. As Festival dramaturge David Gordon says, the Hilburn’s are ideal patrons who give much more than money. They bring love of the arts, camaraderie, loyalty, abundant imagination and a deep understanding of the fine art of having a good time. Their generosity is extraordinary and it is perfect that they own Harmony House. Thank you Don and Carol for all you do! VIRGINA BEST ADAMS VOCAL MASTER CLASS In 1984, family and friends of Virginia Best Adams joined together to establish an endowment to honor her 80th birthday. Since then, the endowment has helped underwrite the training and mentoring of more than 100 young professional singers from around the world. Each year the Festival selects four singers from hundreds of international applications. These emerging artists join the Festival and study with Festival principal artists. The busy schedule includes six working sessions which are open free to the general public, dozens of private coachings, and a special Showcase Concert. In the informal working sessions, the audience shares in the excitement as the coaches and young artists explore all aspects of performing Baroque vocal music, including vocal technique, musical style, foreign language skills, and artistic communication. The Adams Master Class is distinguished by the Festival’s master teachers. David Gordon, Festival Dramaturge, has been the Adams Master Class Director since 1990. David,

hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “one of the world’s great Bach Tenors” is joined in coaching this year by five principal artists of the Bach Festival: Kendra Colton, Robin Blaze, Thomas Cooley, Alexander Dobson, and Andrew Megill. Music Director and Keyboardist for the Master Class is Michael Beattie. “Participating in the Adams Vocal Master Class was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” according to 2011 Adams Fellow Kathryn Mueller. “The combination of intense coaching with the teachers and working with some of the best musicians in the country, while surrounded by the beauty of Carmel in the professional, yet loving environment of the Carmel Bach Festival, couldn’t be matched anywhere else.” The 2012 Adams Fellows are Angela Young Smucker (Chicago), Paul Max Tipton (Boston), Kristen Watson (Boston) and Zachary Wilder (Los Angeles).
