BACH

FESTIVAL

2013 ANNUAL REPORT

MISSION The Festival’s mission is to celebrate the works, inspiration and ongoing influence of Johann Sebastian Bach worldwide by immersing audiences in a festival experience integrating music, education and ideas. The Carmel Bach Festival (CBF) began in 1935 as a four-day series of concerts at the Sunset School Auditorium and the Carmel Mission Basilica and now encompasses 22 days, 42 concerts, and eight venues in Carmel, Pebble Beach, Monterey, Seaside, and Salinas. Under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Paul Goodwin and Executive Director Debbie Chinn, the organization offers innovative artistic programming across all concerts, off-season activities to expand access outside Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula, and is taking strategic risks to cultivate younger and more diverse participants.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Carmel Bach Festival friends, Throughout 2013, a major focus for the Carmel Bach Festival was the launching of numerous initiatives designed to increase access to our work, to deepen our presence in the communities that we serve, to connect with new and diverse constituencies, and to make our Festival a more welcoming and less intimidating environment for those who may not be accustomed to attending live classical music performances. As you’ll read in this brief 2013 annual report, we presented a more diverse array of artistic and educational programs with an exceptionally broad range of composers, musical styles, world-class musicians, and guest performers from around the globe, including: a world premiere by commissioned composer, Thea Musgrave which continued CBF’s annual composer commission begun in 2011, the “crossover” concert with classical/jazz pianist Stephen Prutsman, a main concert program of the influences of French music inspired by J.S. Bach spanning seven centuries, and new programs incorporating other art forms & musical styles that provided new entry points for non-traditional audiences. We significantly expanded our community engagement activities, partnerships, and music education programs at the Festival and throughout the year, providing more opportunities for young people, seniors, and other underserved audiences from new communities to participate in or attend our programs. During the 2013 Festival, our free Music & Ideas series enticed new and younger audiences, particularly with violist, pianist and Emmy award-winning composer John Wineglass’s programs on the influence of Bach on contemporary and hip-hop music, and on film music. David Gordon, who celebrated his 25th anniversary with the Carmel Bach Festival, continued to present his wildly popular free pre-concert lectures to overflow audiences. Speaking of overflow, our free Open Rehearsals, which offer an opportunity to observe portions of a rehearsal process, have continued to be enormously successful. We will be expanding the number of Open Rehearsals in 2014 to welcome more participants. Together with Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), we launched a new Music and the Mind series, a lecture with Dr. Jonathan Berger of Stanford University, which served to promote the medical benefits of music and the use of music as forms of art therapy. And we moved heavily into the world of social and digital media extensively to promote our programs and to interact with current and prospective audience members. Through generous funding by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, we partnered with Team Jaded, a Bay Area documentary film company, to produce a series of videos to help us convey the uniqueness of the Carmel Bach Festival experience. These videos posted on Vimeo, Facebook, our website, in Carmel hotel rooms and other vacation properties, and at the Monterey Bay Airport. These videos reached over 14,000 people during our Festival! 6 ::

CARMEL BACH FESTIVAL

Results far surpassed our expectations, in numbers and diversity of new participants, and in the positive reactions of first-timers to the Carmel Bach Festival experience, affirming the effectiveness of our diverse programming, welcoming atmosphere, and targeted marketing. We exceeded our sales goal by 829 tickets, including an increase of 549 tickets sold: 936 people attended for the first time—a 32% increase over 2012. We received extraordinary support from Union Bank, Alaska Airlines, and San Francisco Magazine who, through their generous corporate underwriting, served as our 2013 Season Sponsors. The Carmel Bach Festival enters its 2014 season with much forward momentum carried by a spirit of innovation and a deep sense of gratitude for your sustained support. We thank you for your partnership as we move the Carmel Bach Festival towards a vibrant future and we eagerly look forward to seeing you at our concerts during July.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Education and Outreach 2013 In an effort to increase access and remove barriers for younger, more diverse, fixedincome, and other underserved audiences, we successfully launched several new initiatives in 2013. These included developing year-round participatory programs in collaboration with community partners who work in underserved communities, offering significantly reduced tickets for various groups to attend concerts during our season, and actively cultivating and mentoring the next generation of audiences, artists, arts administrators, volunteers, and board members. Through our partnerships, we are working to become a catalyst for positive social change and create lifelong learning opportunities for all ages. TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AND EMERGING ARTISTS

2013 Youth Chorus

Youth Chorus In 2013, the Youth Chorus was comprised of 18 young singers from the Monterey Peninsula. The Bach Festival Youth Chorus is a seven-week, high-intensity choral program for students that offers the unique opportunity of singing with a professional orchestra and chorale led by nationally and internationally acclaimed conductors in major works. This year the Youth Chorus sang onstage at Sunset Center with the professional chorale and orchestra, gave free performances at Rancho Cielo Youth Campus and Forest Hill Senior Center in Pacific Grove, and performed their own twilight concert during the Festival. Youth Chorus members also received one-on-one vocal lessons from professional chorale members and performed in a master class showcase for an audience of approximately 100 people. 10 :: CARMEL BACH FESTIVAL

Young Musicians The Young Musician program provides a special opportunity for aspiring young vocalists and instrumentalists to work in a professional environment. In 2013, the largest group of Young Musicians to date performed a Baroque concert onstage at the Sunset Center in Carmel for an audience of almost 450 people, a large increase over last year’s audience numbers. Feedback from the performers, their families, audience members and the music teachers was all very positive, and several youth mentioned that they are already looking forward to next year’s auditions. Virginia Best Adams Vocal Master Class Each year the Festival selects four emerging artists who are at the beginning of professional careers and offers a four-week series of public master classes, private coachings and career mentoring from highly distinguished artists/teachers. The 2013 season included six public master classes to large audiences and a culminating showcase at the Sunset Center in Carmel. In addition, the four Master Class Fellows sing with the professional chorale in most main concerts and performed at a free community concert at the Oldemeyer Center in Seaside. Circle of Strings In 2013, the Bach Festival created a new program consisting of a master class and a workshop for string players. Associate Concertmaster Emlyn Ngai gave a master class for five young violinists and a group Baroque technique workshop for a dozen string players. The master class and workshop both drew audiences of youth and families who were new to the Carmel Bach Festival. The master class audience reached 70 people and the workshop drew approximately 50. The families, music teachers and audience members were enthusiastic about the skills taught to the young string players, and plans are underway to expand future programs to include more participants through the creation of an additional master class, chamber ensembles and training workshops for string teachers, and the utilization of more of the Bach Festival’s professional orchestra members in the training process.

DEEPENING CURRENT PARTNERSHIPS

Oldemeyer Center concert patrons

Oldemeyer Center Our 28th annual free concert at Oldemeyer Center in Seaside, in July 2013, featured an unusually diverse program, which was the result of conversations between Festival staff and the leadership of the Oldemeyer Center at the City of Seaside. As we learned of the area’s historical ties to jazz, blues and gospel music and a desire from that community to hear that style of music, Festival vocalists and instrumentalists developed a program that included an eight-piece band performing jazz and blues hits by artists such as Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday. This contrasted with works by Bach and classical music by the Festival’s Tower Brass, small chamber ensembles and our Virginia Best Adams Vocal Fellows to an overflow crowd of over 300 people. The immediate feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. A survey was distributed during the July concert to find out whether attendees wanted additional concerts by the Bach Festival during the year, and to ask what type of music they would like to hear. Over 95% of respondents replied that they would like additional concerts, and responses ranged from requesting classical music to jazz, blues, gospel and pops. Efforts are currently underway to perform more community-curated programs in Seaside outside the Carmel Bach Festival season.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT continued… Rancho Cielo Previously a one-day visit in July, this program expanded into a six-month residency at Rancho Cielo Youth Campus in Salinas in 2013. From February through July, the Carmel Bach Festival musicians and instructors brought music to Rancho Cielo every other week. The purpose was to engage participants in a shared experience illuminating the relevancy of music to their lives by having them participate in making music of many genres. Sessions were developed using a holistic approach that incorporated feedback from participants, observers, and program instructors to ensure that we provided meaningful engagement with the music, based on participants’ interests, needs and world-view. Since the residency’s inception in February of 2013, the Bach Festival has seen an increased interest in the form of students pursuing the creation and study of music outside of the residency. Several students have expressed renewed interest in learning and playing musical instruments, as well as composing music. The July visit to Rancho Cielo by the Youth Chorus consisted of a concert, a facilitated conversation and shared lunch between both groups. Several Rancho Cielo students attended the Carmel Bach Festival’s Youth Chorus concert as our honored guests.

Members of YOSAL Hamming it up Before the Concert

Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL) Carmel Bach Festival leadership met with YOSAL last year in order to plan a more meaningful, engaging program with the youth musicians. YOSAL leadership specifically requested small-group time for their students to work with the Festival’s world-class musicians to learn skills specific to their instruments. In response to this request, the Festival sent a larger number of musicians to Salinas during their visit in July. The 11 musicians (strings, winds, brass and percussion) worked one-on-one or in small groups with YOSAL students for approximately 90 minutes, then participated in a joint rehearsal and concert for an audience that was much larger than in previous years. The skill level of the YOSAL musicians continues to increase, and the exposure to professional world-class musicians during the small group sessions, the joint rehearsal and concert was very beneficial to the YOSAL students. The audience was delighted by the music performed by the entire group, and the encore that featured all musicians from both organizations electrified the audience with its energy and drive—the musicians clearly enjoyed their time onstage together. The program also included a visit to by the YOSAL students to Carmel to an open rehearsal and a talk by a member of the Festival’s artistic leadership team. The students benefited from seeing a working session of professional musicians onstage in a rehearsal setting. Senior Centers The Senior Center Series was founded in response to requests by area senior facilities that wanted to give their residents access to the Festival but who did not have the capacity to transport them to venues. In 2013, free performances were presented at Carmel Valley Manor and Forest Hill Manor in Pacific Grove. These audiences have shared that they are especially appreciative of the opportunity to experience the Festival “in house,” as many were Bach Festival attendees over the years, but are now unable to attend.

12 :: CARMEL BACH FESTIVAL

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND IMPACT Eliminating Barriers In 2013, we offered $30 discounted tickets to young professionals, $20 discounted tickets to students and active and retired military for all Festival performances, and $15 discounted tickets to families with children. We sold 208 student and military tickets, 180 family tickets and 42 young professional tickets, far exceeding our pre-Festival projections. In 2013, we provided approximately 100 complimentary tickets to non-profit youth organizations across Monterey County and launched a “pay-what-you-can” program for the Saturday matinee concert on July 27th. The promotion attracted 75 new attendees with many commenting that eliminating the cost barrier enabled them to attend, when they otherwise could not afford it.

BevMo! store opening in Carmel with CBF Ambassadors

Ambassadors Ambassadors are a group of younger patrons and young professionals working to build new audiences for the Carmel Bach Festival and to help inspire a love of classical music. Ambassadors engage with our communities through fundraising, social events and performances throughout the year. The program is designed to integrate younger constituents in all areas of the Festival as audience members, donors, volunteers and future board members. The program was launched in 2013; the inaugural event at a Carmel restaurant last March attracted over 100 young professionals from Monterey County who mingled and heard music from a Festival violinist playing with three string players from San Francisco’s Classical Revolution—a national organization of young musicians dedicated to performing high-quality chamber music in non-traditional settings. A similar event was held at Homescapes in Carmel during the Festival last July. Over 100 attendees listened to a trio of Festival musicians, while sampling wine from local purveyors and mingling through the gallery-like space. Through these initial events, we have identified key ambassadors who have volunteered to assist us by hosting future cultivation events, generating interest in the Festival, and soliciting contributions. Music and Ideas In 2013, Artistic Director/Principal Conductor Paul Goodwin and Concertmaster Peter Hanson led three open rehearsals that were free to the public and attracted audiences of up to 700 people. David Gordon, Festival Dramaturge, presented 12 free pre-concert lectures before each main concert and gave an introduction of the music to audiences before each open rehearsal. John Wineglass, EMMY award-winning composer and musician presented two separate lectures during the Festival: the first was a discussion on how Bach’s imprint on music has transcended generations. In the second, he connected to the music of the French film Tous le Matins du Monde through a conversation with the audience and a live demonstration of a viola da gamba, the instrument featured in the film. Fellowships Carmel Bach Festival began a collaboration with California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) to launch a Fellowship program in September 2013. Two CSUMB students began working side-by-side with Festival staff to gain non-profit management experience, focusing on artist relations, Festival production, and community engagement, with additional exposure to development and marketing functions. The students are earning independent work study credit in this structured 20-hour-per-week, 11-month program, while also offering insight into how the Carmel Bach Festival can be more relevant to college-aged constituents. 2013 ANNUAL REPORT :: 13

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT continued…

Music and the Mind

Music and the Mind The inaugural Music and the Mind lecture was developed by Executive Director Debbie Chinn in conjunction with autism advocate and acclaimed pianist Stephen Prutsman to deepen our engagement with long-time listeners of our music, as well as constituents with academic and scientific interests. The event debuted at Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula in July 2013 with Jonathan Berger, composer and researcher and Co-Director of Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts, sharing his work on the effects of music on the brain. Over 100 attendees shared an interest in exploring the boundless and fascinating topic further. Mr. Berger will act as a creative consultant to plan future events.

2013 Musician Hotspot

Musician Hotspots In 2013, we introduced Musician Hotspots at every Festival venue to provide an opportunity for audiences to interact with our Festival artists. Orchestra and chorale members gathered in a designated location for 15-20 minutes following each performance to engage patrons. The response to this initiative was incredibly successful, with audience members interacting with musicians, taking photos and remarking on the unique nature of everyone having “backstage access.”

A SAMPLING OF 2013 AUDIENCE AND PRESS COMMENTS

" We love the very high quality performances, variety of concerts and unusual venues, interesting free events, high energy and friendliness of all staff we encountered, the art raffle, and visiting with musicians after performances." " The experience of hearing the most beautiful music performed by some of the finest musicians in my favorite place is something I look forward to all year long. It does not disappoint." " Performances of too seldom heard Baroque music, particularly choral works. This year the Sunday evening chorale concert was particularly memorable. I also enjoy the vocal recitals—particularly the art song recitals—this year’s Tuesday afternoon recital of French art songs sung by the tenor soloist was particularly outstanding." " I admire the conductor beyond words. He is brilliant, talented, charismatic. The whole Bach Fest experience has transformed for the better. I look forward to next year’s program." " This was our first experience attending the Bach Festival. My son had the honor of participating in the Young Musicians Showcase. It was an amazing experience for him. We are so happy that we were able to attend the Masters Voice Classes and the concert, the Christmas Concerto, and an open rehearsal. The open rehearsal was wonderful. I loved seeing the casual work in progress side. It made the concert even more rewarding. The Masters Voice classes with David Gordon offered an opportunity that was hard to top. I am so happy that we were able to take advantage of this experience. I can’t say enough good things about it!" " I volunteer, so it’s lovely to see people year after year. The sense of community. The glorious music. That CBF has included music other than Bach and Baroque. Having the house lights halfway on so the performers can see the audience and I feel more connected to them. That the community chorus is part of the festival. That there’s community outreach. Love that young people are included." " The festival is a spiritual as well as a musical experience."

VOLUNTEERS The Carmel Bach Festival extends its appreciation to the many volunteers that give their time and energy throughout the season to support the music. The Festival would not be possible without their hard work and dedicated support. A special thank you to those names highlighted in bold print for their fantastic support year-round. We have done our best to include the names of all individuals who have volunteered throughout the season. If we have missed your name, please accept our sincerest apologies.
