The town of Irun is in the center of a conurbation of approximately 100,000 people (Irun, Hendaye, Hondarría) and the approximate population of the Euro city of San Sebastian/Bayonne is 630,000.

Its central location in the Eurocity and new infrastructure proposed in the contest (new train station), makes us believe that Irun could be the starting point for development of the Eurocity around their railway and highway infrastructure,in the manner of the Swiss hypercity described by Andre Corboz, but at a lower cost because the population is concentrated mostly around the line. The new Irun station will be a multimodal and a multiprogrammatic polo, offering to it’s users a variety of activities. It’s a space of possibilities rather than fixed architecture.

The methodology consists, mainly, of providing a thorough analysis of the intensities of use in function of time (daily and weekly) of several generic architectural programs (hotel, tennis sport, train stations, etc…) and also denoting the needs of the city of Irun. This double analysis of both context and function allowed us to choose the elements necessary for the project and their locations.

The project’s shape is inspired by the train stations of the nineteenth century, with the great heights under the structure housing the various newly created programs in the area at ground level. The roofs of the projects are designed as parks, urban gardens giving the city the green areas and the possibilities of community gardens that are needed in Irun. The goal of the team is to use this project to put in place new economic dynamics by taking advantage of the city’s geographic location.
