Aly MacQuarrie

MEET THE STUDENT

Aly MacQuarrie is a senior at Bradley University from Glenview, IL. Currently majoring in music business and minoring in film studies, Aly holds roles as principal cellist in the Bradley Symphony and first soprano in Bradley Chorale. When beginning her years at Bradley, she strived to broaden her knowledge of the entertainment industry, as well as continue performing in ensembles and improving her musicianship.

Combining her love for music and movies, Aly spent a semester in Los Angeles last fall, where she delved into entertainment industry-related classes and completed an internship at Supe Troop, a company that specializes in music supervision. This experience provided her with valuable insights into the sync and music licensing process, allowing her to apply prior knowledge of those aspects in a practical setting.

Throughout her time at Bradley, Aly has aspired to combine the two art forms she loves most, and her time in Los Angeles further solidified this ambition, equipping her with the skills and understanding necessary to pursue her career goals.

HOW HAS BRADLEY IMPACTED YOU AS A MUSICIAN?

My musicianship has improved significantly thanks to my professors and experiences at Bradley. I have learned how to adapt and be what is needed for a particular piece, whether that be supporting or soloistic. Throughout my private lessons, I have improved my musical techniques and musicianship, as well as learned the best methods of practicing. Additionally, I have loved the opportunity to read and perform new music, and do my best to play according to the vision of the composer. And finally, gaining an understanding of the music business itself has allowed me to understand the importance of kindness, professionalism, and a positive attitude.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER BRADLEY?

Upon graduating, I intend to move to Los Angeles,California, and secure a job in the entertainment industry, ideally working in music synchronization for movies and television. It will be a big transition, but thanks to the opportunities given to me by Bradley, I have made many valuable connections in Hollywood that have given me the confidence to take this next step in my career aspirations. Also, I'd like to continue performing in ensembles, because one semester without an instrument has taught me that playing music is such a huge part of my life, and I would not be who I am without it.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BRADLEY MUSIC?

As one of four generations in my family to attend Bradley, the love for this school and our fine music department runs deep. My decision to leave private industry and enter the collegiate education field was motivated entirely by my love for our amazing students here studying music. It is also reflects a forward-thinking department that wants to prepare these young professionals for the real world through a diverse array of coursework and niche majors. The creative talents of both our students and staff continue to amaze me every day I walk through our historic buildings.
