S till n oh elpline ffor or B lyvoor Still no helpline Blyvoor Adele Louw By the start of this week there was still no buyer for Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine. The Herald previously reported that Blyvoor’s last owner, the mining group Village Main Reef, indictated that it was not going to give any more money to save Blyvoor as it has already lost millions through the mine. In the meantime, Blyvoor’s previous owner, DRDGOLD, also indicated that it had already given over ownership of the mine in June last year and was for this reason not responsible for anything else at the mine. After Blyvoor was placed under provisional winding up on 6 August, on August 20 provisional liquidators were appointed for the mine. One of the provisional liquidators appointed at the mine, Mr Leigh Roering, told the Herald on Monday that although it is still hoped that the mine can be sold to someone as a whole, no such deal had been struck. Roering had previously indicated that, if the mine was not sold as a whole, individual sections could still be sold off. Anglo Gold Ashanti is still continuing with the pumping of underground water on behalf of Blyvoor. Due to the pumping that has to continue, skeleton staff is still active at the mine.

In the meantime, the lives of many former employees of the mine are still hanging in the balance as they are waiting to see whether or not they would be able to work at the mine again if it is sold. Many former employees are still staying in mine houses, even though they have not had any income for months. According to Ms Willa Visser of the Dutch Reformed Church (NG Kerk) in Blyvoor, this church has been giving out food parcels to children at schools in Blyvoor as well as to 15 other families in the town for the past three weeks. Visser says that although some people made donations to the church to give to people in Blyvoor, these supplies have almost run out and much more is needed to assist those who have been left without an income after the problems at the mine started. People who are willing to assist can call the church at 018 789 8441. “We received reports that there are many malnourished animals running around in Blyvoor,” Ms Marlene Howie of the Carletonville SPCA told the Herald on Monday. As a result of this, he SPCA is launching a door to door campaign this week to try and determine how many people need help for their animals in Blyvoor. The SPCA is also

prepared to take the animals for which owners cannot care anymore, but is also ready to assist owners who do not want to give up their animals. To make this possible, the SPCA is asking for do-

herding cattle across from the school, cooled down in it. Last week a spokesman for the Merafong City Local Municipality responded to the newspaper’s questions about the matter, “There were no reports to the municipality that the Hlanganani sewer pipeline was leaking this past week. The pipeline has not been taken over from the contractor and it is possible at if leakage occurred that the contractor dealt with the issue. The municipality also did not deal with a blockage on the pipeline.” “According to the PMU Section your statement that ‘It seems as if the whole line might be giving problems again’ is

devoid of any truth compared to the numerous problems experienced prior to the reconstruction of the pipeline. “The municipality however acknowledges that isolated incidents and subsidence occurred at some manholes. This can largely be ascribed to the difficulty in achieving compaction directly adjacent to the manhole shafts, with the recent rain further contributing to consolidation of the soil around the manholes, giving rise to some subsidence. The contractor is however aware of the problems and will institute the necessary corrective measures as soon as possible,” the spokesman indicated.

More problems at sewer line across from Hlanganani Adele Louw All is still not well at the sewerage line across from Hlanganani Primary School in Khutsong, Extension 3. The sewer line has been in the news in the past after the ground around the line continued to subside until a large sinkhole caved in at the school’s main gate in November 2011. Although the line was rebuilt by another contractor earlier this year, it did not seem to halt the problems. Just over a month ago several large cracks started to appear alongside the newly laid sewer line, and a manhole on the western side of the school started to subside. A large cavity has also started to appear under a manhole. Although the contractor responsible for the work was called back, and within days of the Herald’s complaint repaired the problem, a councillor from Khutsong, Mr Teboho Kenneth Foteng, showed the Herald on November 1 that the ground underneath a different area of the same pipeline was also

starting to subside. At this spot the ground underneath one of the manholes started to sink in. At the time of the Herald’s visit, a group of workers were busy attending to a sewerage leak in the same area. The Herald’s journalists again visited the line during the past week and saw more cracks in the ground on top of the pipeline in places where such problems had not previously been reported. At the time of the Herald’s visit, the road to Hlanganani Primary School was flooded with sewerage water which was streaming from one of the manholes. There was so much sewerage water streaming from the manhole that several dogs, belonging to a man
