Fietsryer gesleep, man hang Die Carletonville Herald het weer oor ‘n verskeidenheid nuusberigte in sy uitgawe van 20 jaar gelede berig.

Gert van Tonder (32) van Kareeboomstraat 22, Fochville se vrou, Anette, gesê na haar man grusaam op die pad tussen Johannesburg en Potchefstroom dood is. Mnr. Van Tonder is vermoedelik op slag dood toe ‘n minibus hom omstreeks 21:15 by die Western Deep Levels Suidmyn-afrit raakgery het.

Sy liggaam is ongeveer tien meter ver oor die teerblad gesleep.

Intussen is ‘n 36-jarige man van Welverdiend in die Streekhof op Oberholzer onskuldig bevind op ‘n aanklag van strafbare manslag.

Mnr. Jacobus Griffiths het in die hof verskyn in verband met die dood van sy buurman, mnr. Leonard Bruce Eric Trembath (61) van Eerstelaan 53, Welverdiend, nadat hy hom in ‘n skoktoestand doodgeslaan het. Streeklanddros Louis Virtue het die voorval as ‘n tragedie, wat sy oorsprong in drank-

misbruik gehad het, beskryf. Hy het bevind dat mnr. Griffiths geen voorafbeplande motief gehad het om mnr.

Trembath te lyf te gaan nie, en die beskuldigde nie ‘n gewelddadige persoon is nie.

Griffiths het Trembath te lyf gegaan na laasgenoemde skielik met ‘n haelgeweer te voorskyn gekom en ‘n skoot op hom geskiet het terwyl hy ‘n aand by die Trembath-gesin gekuier het. ‘n Twee-en-twintigjarige man is in die Rondgaande hof op Klerksdorp met die doodstraf gevonnis vir die moord op ‘n bejaarde man van Carletonville die vorige jaar.

Regter J.J. Strydom het Theleko Joseph Rakhalane galg toe gestuur nadat hy mnr. Immanuel Nazareth (Naas) Rootman van Jadestraat op 15 Mei die vorige jaar in sy behoorlik beveiligde erf oorval en vermoor het. Rakhalane is ook tot tien jaar effektiewe gevangenisstraf gevonnis weens roof met verswarende omstandighede en die onwettige besit van ‘n vuurwapen.

Die veroordeelde het toegang tot die Rootman-egpaar se erf verkry deur kaal voete oor ‘n hoë muur te klim. Hy het die 72-jarige mnr. Rootman, wat in

sy tuin besig was, gegryp, verwurg en hom na die buitetoilet gesleep.

Dr. Anton Kloppers en sy vrou, Johanna, het hul vierde ampstermyn as burgemeesterspaar van Fochville begin.

Mnr. Pierre Spies is verkies as onderburgemeester van Fochville vir die 1993/1994-ampstermyn.

“Wedersyde vrede en geluk vir Fochville se inwoners is vir my van die uiterste belang, veral in die onseker tye wat voorlê.

Volgens a.o. Aspeling, bevelvoerder van die Kinderbekermingseenheid, het die polisie die vorige week 14 gevalle van vermiste kinders tussen die ouderdomme van ses en 16 jaar ondersoek.

Tien van die minderjariges was reeds deur die polisie teruggevind.

Cansa Relay this Friday Adele Louw Residents will be able to show their support for those working to assist Cancer victims as well as those suffering from the disease during a fun event on Friday.

On Friday, 22 March, people from all over the area will be able to take part in a Relay For Life that will be held by Cansa (the South African Cancer Association) at Wonderfontein High School. The activities will start at 18:00 and will continue throughout the night.

According to the coordinator of the event, Ms Zandri Schickerling, those who take part will be able to quality for various prizes.

There will also be a variety of entertainment during the course of the night while the special item to remember those who have died of the disease will also again bring a tear to many eyes.

“There will be prizes for the best dressed, best team spirit and best decorated campsite. Everyone who takes part must also put a health slogan up at their camping site to make others more aware of cancer,” Schickerling indicated. She added that although about 40 teams have so far entered, there is still space for more.

Other members of the public are also welcome to drop by during the course of the evening.

“We are receiving complaints from the public regarding the theft of their money, willingly handed over by themselves,” said the Carletonville SAPS’s Spokesperson, Sgt Busi Menoe.

“People take large amounts of money, sometimes their entire pension they have worked for all their lives, or their bonuses or whatever the case might be,” Menoe tells, “and hand this money to ‘sangomas’ who promise to double, or increase it in their advertisements.”

Obviously this is impossible, and when the victims of these sly criminals go back to collect their increased amount of money, they find that all their hardearned money has

not doubled, but rather vanished, together with the ‘sangoma’ it was handed to.

“Cases such as these will not stand in court,” Menoe tells.

“Because the money is not stolen from the victims, but originally handed over to these conartists willingly, which is not a

very responsible thing to do.”

“I would like to reiterate,” Menoe says sternly, “Nobody can increase or double your cash, so do not believe that these sangomas will and expect the police to trace the perpetrators when they have fled with your money,” Menoe warns.

I was at Kokosi library on Saturday March 16. The staff were busy eating, some were plaiting their hair behind the counter, just chatting and laughing.

The place is also dirty, there is no respect for the community at this place. Please people in charge, can you do something, the library is a disaster. Anonymous.

I am sure that those readers who read my articles feel the same, because all this is happening in our midst, right under our noses, on a daily basis.

On Monday, I enjoyed venting with my colleagues over a jolly breakfast at the Spur.

This is sometimes necessary to help one unwind and just forget about the morbidity and laugh a little.

We spoke of some people in Merafong and could not help but giggle at the way certain characters perceive things.

I would like to share this with you.

Perhaps you will laugh. Perhaps you’ll see how funny you really are if you are one of the people involved in the stories I’ll tell. Or maybe you will get really upset and dislike me even more. Either way... here is what is funny to me and keeps a smile on my face sometimes.

So the police, with the help of a carwatch and a local resident, managed to arrest members of a massive hi-jacking and car theft syndicate in Carletonville a while ago.

The scene is wilder than the wild west. Bullets fly, the GTI get-away Polo drives into and lightly bumps a vehicle standing in the parking lot where all of this takes place. The driver of the getaway vehicle is shot in the arm, from a distance, by a man who stumbles upon the suspects trying to steal his vehicle and happens to be a professional hunter.

As the criminals try to race off, Mr Hunter makes sure the driver is woun-

ded in the arm and that the vehicle takes enough bullets, damaging it to such an extent that it is unable to drive off.

The car-watch and another civilian, visiting the shopping complex, run at the speed of light and tackle a suspect, stopping him dead in his tracks.

As if the script was written professionally, an armed chief traffic officer and local station commander of the SAPS happen to be at the scene, take over from there, and within minutes, the place is cordoned off with ‘crime scene’ tape, covered in police vehicles, ambulances and, of course, the local reporter, me.

The article is placed, the police are so chuffed and thank Mr Hunter for helping them arrest members of a syndicate operating all over Gauteng. The photos come out beautifully, the information is 100 percent correct - I gathered it all at the scene myself.

Well, I thought I had done a good job, until I walk into my office the next day, only to find in excess of about 10 messages to call a lady back in connection with the article...urgently. I have barely been greeted, when the lady states her unhappiness about the article.

“What did I forget?” I wonder. “Was another person shot that neither the police or I know of?

Was another citizen’s arrest made that we missed? Is the car-watch part of the syndicate? What could possibly be wrong?”

“I am very unhappy about the article,” she says. “My daughter and her child were in the vehicle that was lightly bumped by the get-away car, and their names were not even mentioned in the paper.”

Well, after biting my tongue, to prevent both ugly words and myself from

swallowing the phone’s handset, I politely said, “I am so sorry ma’m, the police were so excited about having been able to arrest members of this syndicate, and there was really a lot going on.

It must have slipped their minds completely to provide the names of your daughter and grandchild who were in the vehicle which was scratched by the get-away car.”

Without going into too much detail, I was also called by a very angry mama because of her daughter’s name in the paper recently.

I understand that certain things in life are embarrassing. We all do things we regret, and I am most definitely not there to haunt anyone about their past mistakes.

If, however, your past crimes are directly linked to a crime you have just been charged with and face court sentencing for, once the serious court cases are over and done with, I have no option unfortunately.

Once you appear in court, and given you are 18 years and older, the media is, most definitely allowed to publish your name.

I did this in a recent article, only to have mama-bear call and speak to me, in very loud tones at first, but calming down later.

All I can say after the intense, heated conversation with the understandably protective mommy and her ‘mentioned’ daughter shouting things at me in the background is; Me. stands for “mejuffrou” or “mevrou” in Afrikaans.

A lawyer who says that he will sue Media 24 because under no circumstances may someone be found guilty of a crime in a court of law’s name be mentioned is probably not a good option when considering the fact the he has to defend you in court for your next se-

rious charge.

If I was you, I would seriously rather be keeping a low profile and not be making threatening phone calls to the media and police officers dealing with the case (although I heard you ‘never got hold of them’) and....flowers are sent to the homes of people who lose loved ones or celebrate birthdays or are recovering from illnesses.

Not to sympathise with someone because their name was published in a small local paper after having been sentenced with one crime and charged with the next.

Unless you have the world’s most sympathetic friends and family... which is a good thing with the ‘insensitive’ journalists hanging around Carletonville.

Blyvoor plant road ‘end of road’ for man Cerise du Plooy An unknown man died mysteriously on a road to Blyvoor during the past week.

On Saturday evening at around 23:00, a man was found dead behind his steering wheel on what is known as the Blyvooruitzicht plant road.

The man was found with a gunshot wound to his head.

Detective Constable Andrew Phakedi of the Carletonville SAPS, is investigating the case and could do with any information.

Anyone who may have seen something or knows anything about the death of this man, must contact Phakedi at 076 759 4987 urgently.

This road literally meant the end of the road for a murder victim over the weekend.

Volunteer patrollers needed in Khutsong

Cerise du Plooy Khutsong was previously divided into six sectors in which the SAPS operated.

This has changed, and there are now only three sectors. At the moment gang violence in Khutsong tops off the already problematic housebreakings, house robberies, theft, rapes and murders, and police officers are having a tough time maintaining enough presence to make enough arrests.

“In certain areas, local residents have volunteered to help us by becoming patrollers,” Constable Rachel Shomolekae, the Sector Manager of Sector 2 in Khutsong explains. “This helps so much, because police officers cannot be present everywhere, all the time.”

What happens now is, resident patrollers are able to keep an eye on crime, and make citizen’s arrests, call the

police and so help fight crime in their various sectors.

“This helps tremendously and makes such a big difference, “ she says.

“These residents are our eyes and ears when we cannot be around, but still know that they have our full backing.”

Shomolekae advises that anyone who wishes to become a patroller and help better the circumstances in their sectors, must visit the police station and register in the office of Constable Evelyn Matabane. “Volunteer patrollers will be briefed and receive proper training from the SAPS.” She also encourages residents not to become self-appointed patrollers and operate independently, as there are certain laws that still need to be adhered to and because this is a role in which the police are just assisted by residents.

The drug problem in Merafong is ongoing.

Although personnel at the local police stations are trying their utmost best with the manpower available to them to combat the problem, help from outside is also essential.

An anonymous drug tip-off e-mail address has been set up by a community member who will give through all the information received to police units outside of Carletonville and in turn, these units will conduct thorough investigations and operations to intervene.

Soon whistle-blowers will also be able to give through information on BBM and Whatsapp, even easier methods of communication with a source who is passionate about eradicating drugs in Merafong.

“Information will not leak, names will not be revealed and everything is guaranteed to remain completely anonymous and confidential if the informants so wish,” said the very reliable source.

Ry veilig dié vakansietyd Inwoners moet seker maak dat hulle die komende vakansietyd veilig op ons paaie bly.

Die skool het reeds vir die April-vakansie gesluit en dit is dié tyd van die jaar waarin die meeste langnaweke plaasvind.

Vir die gelukkiges beteken dit ‘n welverdiende Paasvakansie. Vir ander beteken dit ‘n vakansie by die huis met dalk hier en daar ‘n tydjie weg na familie of dalk na ‘n ontspanplek soos die hengelwater.

Hoe dit ookal sy, dié tyd van die jaar is van die besigste op ons paaie. Nie net gaan inwoners heen en weer ry nie, maar baie ander mense gaan ook op paaie in ons area na en van hul vakansiebestemmings beweeg.

Sulke hoër verkeersdruk lei gewoonlik bykans outomaties tot bestuurders se senuwees wat knaag. Om sake erger te maak, is daar steeds padwerke op groot dele van die N12, wat selfs wanneer dit in ‘n goeie toestand is, die bynaam van ‘Pad van die dood’ verwerf het.

Hoewel inwoners wat die paaie gaan aandurf niks aan dié slegte omstandighede kan doen nie, kan hulle wel probeer voorsorg tref om ten minste seker te maak dat dit waaraan hulle self iets kan doen, reg is. Mense wat lang of besige paaie gaan aandurf, moet hul voertuie laat nagaan en seker maak dat alles, maar veral belangrike items soos remme, ligte en bande in ‘n goeie toestand is. Die volgende stap is dan om hierdie dinge te gebruik.

In sommige ander provinsies is daar in die verlede spesifiek oor Paasnaweek veldtogte geloods om bestuurders aan te moedig om selfs in daglig met hul ligte aan te bestuur.

Só ‘n estra bietjie moeite help baie om voertuie meer sigbaar te maak vir ander motors en voetgangers. Hoeveel keer het ‘n mens nie al gehoor dat ‘n bestuurder wat ‘n ongeluk veroorsaak het, sê “ek het hom nie gesien nie”.

Indien voertuie se ligte die hele tyd aan is, maak dit die kans dat dít kan gebeur baie kleiner.

Indien bestuurders bedagsaam teenoor ander padgebruikers is, genoeg rus en onthou om nie onder die invloed van alkohol te bestuur nie, behoort dit al ver te gaan om ongelukke te voorkom.

Laerskool Fochville beheerliggaam Na aanleiding van verskeie briewe deur Mnr. Riaan de Bruin en Hein Marais, stel die Beheerliggaam van Laerskool Fochville die feite vir kennisname: Laerskool Fochville het hom nog al die tyd weerhou van ongesubstansieerde stellings en briewe in die media rakende die taalkwessie, maar moet nou antwoord in publieke belang met verifieerbare feite wat op versoek beskikbaar is.

Na verskeie vergaderings met die Onderwysdepartement is die Afrikaanse skole se hoofde in 2011 deur Me. Zanelle Mtembu, Direkteur in die Gauteng Onderwysdepartement, genooi vir ’n vergadering.

Een voorstel van Me. Mthembu was dat die twee Afrikaanse laerskole saamsmelt. Die Departement sou dan ’n Engelse hoërskool bou. Sy het bevestig dat geen personeel hul werk sal verloor nie en dat personeeloorplasings van een skool na ’n ander sal geskied.

Laerskool Losberg en Laerskool Fochville het in gesamentlike strategie vir samesmelting ontwikkel en dit is ooreengekom dat dit by beide skole op oueraande voorgelê sal word vir goedkeuring.

Dit het wel by Laerskool Fochville plaasgevind waar Mnre. Roos en de Bruin teenwoordig was.

Samesmelting is deur ’n oorweldigende meerderheid stem aanvaar.

Laerskool Losberg het egter nooit die voorlegging aan hulle ouers gedoen soos ooreengekom nie, en het die verskoning voorgehou dat hul Laerskool Fochville se Beheerliggaam se veiligheid nie

by so ’n vergadering kan waarborg nie. Die vergadering by Losberg is toe afgestel. ’n Vergadering is wel maande later by Losberg met ouers gehou waar ware feite nooit aan Laerskool Losberg se ouers gegee is nie.

Dit ten spyte van die feit dat Laerskool Losberg deel was van ’n getekende beginselsooreenkoms tussen die drie Afrikaanse skole vir doeleindes van samewerking om Afrikaans as moedertaal in Fochville skole te behou.

Laerskool Fochville glo dat uitstekende Afrikaanse skole krities is vir die dorp se ekonomiese en sosiale voortbestaan, want ouers volg goeie skole. Laerskool Losberg is reeds geregistreer as parallel-medium. Hulle is in die hoof opvangsgebied vir Engelse leerders en die terrein is so groot dat die druk vir groeiende Engelse onderrig daar nooit sal afneem nie.

Ons verstaan ook glad nie waarom individue met geen kinders of direkte belang by Laerskool Losberg die dorp se ekonomiese volhoubaarheid so bedreig nie.

In belang van die gemeenskap staan Laerskool Fochville se deure steeds oop vir verdere onderhandelings om ’n merkbare ooreenkoms te bereik. Laerskool Fochville beywer hom vir kwaliteit Afrikaanse onderrig sonder om eksklusief te wees.

Wanneer jy deur Jesus Christus by die Vader uitkom, gebruik Hy jou gebede om wonderwerke te verrig.

Wanneer ons die krag van die opregte gelowige gebed onderskat, lei dit tot biddeloosheid. Dan berokken ons onsself en die koninkryk van God ernstige skade. Jy kry eenvoudig nie wat jy wil hê as jy God nie daarvoor vra nie (Jak 4:2).

Alhoewel God die ganse skepping beheer en daaroor regeer, laat Hy tog binne sy regering ruimte vir die geloof en gebede van sy kinders. Dit beteken dat Hy ons gebede inskakel by sy liefdesplan met die skepping en die lotge-

valle van mense.

Die opregte gebede van God se kinders is daarom van onbeskryflik groot belang.

Die natuur het sy eie wetmatighede wat God daarin gelê het, maar in sy wonderlike genade is Hy bereid, as dit Hom behaag, om in die gang van die natuur en die omstandighede van mense in te gryp.

As gelowiges in nood verkeer, kan en moet hulle met groot vrymoedigheid tot God bid en sy genade en hulp vra.

Daarom het gelowiges die voorreg en plig om vir mekaar te bid en genesing van siektes te vra (Jak 5:16).

Elia, wat net so ‘n mens soos ons was, het ernstig gebid dat dit nie moet reën nie, omdat sy volk van die ware God afgedwaal het. Vir drie jaar en ses

Hoe om dit nie te doen

‘n Kollega van Wysneus vertel dat sy onlangs op meer as een geleentheid amper haar karretjie van skok omgegooi het oor die barbare wat soms in ons dorpe se strate opgemerk word.

Dalk het die barbaar iets teen hulle gehad? Hoe dit ookal sy, indien hy iets teen hulle gehad het, het dit

Sy wil sal altyd geskied. Maar gelowiges moet onthou en glo dat die Here na ons mees alledaagse versugtinge wil luister. Met al ons probleme, of dit nou siekte of geldnood of wat ook al is, kan ons na Hom toe gaan en uitkoms vra.

God sal nooit sy rug op ons draai nie, want Hy is en bly getrou en sal sy beloftes nooit vergeet nie (1 Kor 1:9 en 2 Tim 2:13). Sy genade sal altyd

het hom so lank gevat om te besluit wat om te doen dat hy reeds so ver was at hulle seker nie eens meer sy lelike teken sou kon sien nie. Al wat hy dus gedoen het, was om sy naam met ‘n plank te slaan.

Wat Wysneus se verstand te bowe gaan, is dat die probleem keer op keer by presies dieselfde huis gebeur.

Inwoners is altyd vinnig op op hul perdjie te spring indien die munisipaliteit vir só ‘n probleem verantwoordelik is. Indien die rioolprobleem egter, soos in die geval van die huis in Dolomite die eienaar van die grond se probleem is, kan hulle soms ook maar baie traag wees om iets daaraan te doen.

11 hours to get an appointment Cerise du Plooy Great unhappiness about the licensing process has, as in the past, resurfaced.

Last week two young adults, both from Carletonville, had to endure extreme circumstances just in order to obtain appointments for their driver’s licenses.

Mr. *Craig Sia went to the Carletonville Traffic Department toward the end of last month to get forms to submit in order to get an appointment for his license.

One of the officials at the traffic department whom he asked for the correct form, raised her voice at him and said, “Don’t you know you cannot get an appointment now? You must come here at around 04:00 on 5 or 6 March to get an appointment.

Had this really been the only requirement, Sia and the other complainant say they still may have found it more acceptable.

This was, however, not the case. Not only did getting an appointment take waking up really early, taking time off work and getting to the Traffic Department in the dark at 04:00, but the process dragged on until 15:00.

“My legs and back are so sore from standing for 11 hours,” Sia said. He tells that he got there and stood in line from 04:00. “I was the eighth person in the row.” At around 06:30, the gates were-opened for all those waiting, and only at 08:30, did the offices open.

“I felt so sorry for the many people behind the first 30 of us, who were shown away,” he says. “They were not notified earlier that only 30 people for each license type would be helped and the rest showed away till next month, but were allwed to stay in the long row for hours before receiving the disappointing news.”

Sia says that, after various processes, such as the eye test were complete, the longest part began - standing at the counter just to pay.

“I could see other employees coming through the back of the offices of those working behind the counters, handing in the exact forms we were all standing in line with to secure our appointments, and those being helped first.”

Sia says he has no doubt that a little extra is being paid and pocketed for these favours.

“The staff at the licensing department are extremely rude and are not in a hurry to help at all,” he complains.

“They do, in fact, sit and chat and laugh, drink coffee and at their own, very slow pace, help those who are waiting, who have been waiting since 04:00.”

Sia says that he finds this unacceptable, as he and so many others, have employees waiting for them, had to take a day’s leave and possibly lose a day’s payment, just for an appointment to get a license.

“This is driving people toward corruption, because it is much easier to buy a license, than to stand and hope that you are in the 30 chosen people, fortunate enough to get an appointment.”

The Herald contacted the official spokesman of the Merafong City Local Municipality who, in turn, made enquiry with the relevant managers at the traffic department in Carletonville for feedback.

The spokesman let the Herald know, however, that even after a seven day chance to investigate and respond to unhappy resident, he had not received a response by Tuesday afternoon yet.

“I am not suprised,” Sia said at this news. “I did not think that they cared enough to give us valid reasons for the

poorest service in town.”

The questions the Herald asked Merafong’s traffic department were; Why can appointments only be made on two days of the month, why are only 30 people’s applications accepted per day, meaning only 60 appointments per month, is the Traffic Department not able to test more than two people per week day, why do people have to start queuing at 04:00 in the morning, why are admin officials, when they know that some people have been standing since 04:00, not able to process documents more quickly. The complainant in this case was the eighth person to be helped. Surely it cannot take from opening time (let alone his standing from 04:00) till 15:00 to just make an appointment. Where does the traffic de-

partment propose all the other people who did not get to make appointments (and that was, apparently, close to 100 people) get licenses from? Does the fact that just getting an appointment for a license is extremely difficult and in some cases, impossible, not contribute to the illegal buying of licenses, what happened to the call centre that was used for making bookings and finally, the municipality was asked to kindly inform the community of a more effective, less frustrating, faster way to be guaranteed an appointment for a license.

Unfortunately there was no response from this department. *The name of the complainant was changed, as he fears that he will be victimised when he is tested for his license.

Kokosi living conditions upset

The unhealthy living conditions that many Kokosi residents have to endure.

Last week residents of Kokosi marched to the Fochville Civic Centre to hand over a memorandum regarding service delivery problems in this residential area.

A large group of angry residents took part in the march on 13 March. Although most of the marchers returned home after the uprising, others were arrested after they allegedly turned violent.

According to one of the organisers of the march, Mr Buti Magodiele, residents are fed up over a continuing lack of services.

“People in Khutsong often complain about bad service but it is actually worse in Kokosi. In Khutsong there are at least new houses being built,” Magodiele told the Herald.

He showed the newspaper some of the problems that caused the residents to march.

Many residents currently have to stay in shacks because no new houses have been built for years because of an ownership battle over the ground on which the houses are to be built. Although the municipality already started to install services on the ground in 2008, the court later ruled that the ground actually belong to a resident, Mr Wessie van der Westhuizen. The municipality and Van der Westhuizen have been locked in a legal battle since this time.

Ironically the ground that was set out and on which services were laid for Extension 6 is directly opposite Kokosi’s main informal housing area.

In the meantime, residents are also upset about a stream, which is supposed to canal storm water past Kokosi, that has been filled with rubbish for years. To make matters worse, the narrow bridge is also sagging.

The canal is situated only meters from where a large heap of rubbish burns alongside houses. When the Herald visited the scene, children were playing close to the rubbish.

“I have been living here for 15 years and is still waiting for a house,” one of

the residents of the area, Mr Fire Molefe, told the Herald.

Molefe and other residents also showed the Herald a pipe that has been leaking for some time. A large bush has been formed as a result of the grass and other plants around the leak growing because of the abundance of water.

“This pipe has been leaking for years and we have complained about it several times. In the meantime one will hear people complaining that those who stay in Kokosi Extension 99 waste water,” an upset Molefe complained.

People staying in Kokosi are also not happy with the condition of many roads in the township. In some places even paved roads have potholes in them. In other places the dirt roads are in such a condition that it is almost impossible to drive a car on them. The situation worsens when it rains.

In the meantime, Kokosi residents also complain that they are being plagued by criminals. This problem is also made worse by the fact that some of the high mast lights in the township are out of order. Residents also complain that there are no police stations in Kokosi or Greenspark.

Although the Herald forwarded questions about the problems to the Merafong City Local Municipality, no response was received by the time of the newspaper going to print.

“The MEC for Community Safety, Ms Faith Mazibuko, indicated last year that a satelite police station will be built in Kokosi. Unfortunately she is the only one with the power to take this matter further,” the spokesperson of the Police in Fochville, Constable Elsie Tshonte, told the Herald this week.

Tshonte also indicated that as Greenspark is not as big or busy as Fochville or Khutsong, this residential area will at most get a mobile police station.

“We will actually be very happy if a mobile station could be put up as it will make our work lighter. At this stage, however, Greenspark also still falls in the same policing sector as Fochville and some farms, which will also make it difficult to give it a new policing facility,” she added.

Relatively new to the SAPS, Matabane has served the force for three years, having worked for the Crime Prevention Unit of the Khutsong police up until recently.

After completing her high school career at Tswasongo High School, in Khutsong, Matabane had various options.

When asked why she chose to join the police force, instead of becomming a nurse, teacher or traffic officer, Matabane simply states that she was interested in fighting crime.

Studying Human Resources Management through Wescol FET College in Carletonville, with one of her subjects being Communications, Matabane’s appointment could not have come at a more perfect time.

“They appointed someone else in my place,” explained Constable Rachel Shomolekae, former Spokesperson of the Khutsong SAPS. “But because Matabane is so passionate about communication, she volunteered and asked to be considered a candidate too, and the choice to appoint her was made.”

Shomolekae has been appointed a sector manager of Sector 2 in Khutsong, and due to this would not be able to carry out her current duties and the duties of spokesperson simultaneously.

When asked what her goals are and what she would like to achieve in her new position, Matabane says

that she would like to help build a better relationship between the residents of Khutsong and the Khutsong SAPS. Matabane has already completed one project as Communications Officer. “We collected second-hand, usable clothing from people,” she says, “and then distributed it to needy people in the New Mandela Section in Khutsong.”

She says that the people in this section are extremely needy and live in poor conditions, and that both adults and children were thrilled to receive clothing.

“By doing this we not only enhanced the image of the SAPS, but also showed the needy that we really do care about them,” Matabane explains.

‘Gemiddelde’ huis straks nie vir jou

’n Gemiddelde salaris is nou nie genoeg om ’n “gemiddelde” huis te koop nie, maar dit beteken nie dat voornemende huiskopers moet moed opgee nie, sê Berry Everitt, besturende direkteur van die Chas Everitt International-eiendomsgroep.

Hy skryf in die jongste uitgawe van die nuusbrief, Property Signposts, dat Absa se jongste behuisingsoorsig toon dat die gemiddelde prys van ’n huis in die middel segment van die SA huismark (R500 000 tot R3,6m) aan die einde van verlede jaar R1,1m was.

“Sonder ’n deposito sal die minimum maandelikse verbandbetaling op so ’n huis net minder as R8 700 beloop en as ’n mens die algemene reël toepas dat jou verbandbetaling nie 28% van jou huishoudelike inkomste moet oorskry nie, moet jy sowat R31 000 per maand verdien om dit te bekostig.

“En selfs met ’n deposito van 20% sal die maandelikse betaling net meer as R7 600 beloop en jy sal dus ’n inkomste van sowat R28 000 per maand moet verdien - en dis volgens die jongste Sensussyfers baie meer as die gemiddelde SA huishouding se inkomste.”

Die Sensussyfers, sê Everitt, toon dat Suid-Afrika se gemiddelde jaarlikse salaris R103 204 is, wat op ’n maandelikse salaris van R8 600 per maand neerkom. In ’n huishouding met twee gemiddelde salarisse sal die gesamentlike maandelikse inkomste dus R17 200 beloop.

“Dit beteken egter glad nie dat mense

wat gemiddelde salarisse verdien maar hul drome om self ’n huis te besit op die langebaan moet skuif nie aangesien daar op die oomblik inderdaad talle huise beskikbaar is wat hulle wel kan bekostig.

“Absa se syfers toon byvoorbeeld ook dat die nasionale gemiddelde prys van ’n huis in die ‘bekostigbare’ kategorie (40vkm tot 79vkm wat minder as R500 000) in die laaste kwartaal van 2012 sowat R345 000 beloop het en dat die gemiddelde prys van ’n kleiner huis (80vkm tot 140vkm) in die middel marksegment R778 000 beloop het.

“As ’n mens ’n deposito van 10% inreken, beteken dié statistiek dat ’n huishoudelike inkomste van tussen R10 000 en R22 000 per maand genoeg is om ’n bekostigbare of kleiner huis te koop.

“En dit beteken dus dat huishoudings wat gesamentlik die gemiddelde SA inkomste van R17 200 per maand verdien nou redelik maklik ’n spreekwoordelike voet in die deur kan kry as hulle huise wat tussen R500 000 en R550 000 kos, teiken.”

Hy raai voornemende kopers aan om nie tyd te verspil nie aangesien bekostigbaarheid op die oomblik inderdaad op ’n hoë vlak is as huispryse en verbandbetalings met huishoudings se besteebare inkomste vergelyk word.

“Huispryse is besig om te styg, veral in die goedkoper segment van die mark waar ’n styging van 6,6% verlede jaar aangeteken is, en dis onwaarskynlik

dat rentekoerse veel langer as ’n jaar op die heersende lae vlakke gehandhaaf gaan word.

Hoe langer kopers dus wag, hoe minder huis gaan hulle geld koop,” sê hy.

Eienaars wat hul huise opknap om die waarde te verhoog voordat hulle hul eiendom verkoop, moet gewoonlik mooi dink watter opknappings die beste onmiddellike opbrengs op besteding gaan meebring maar eienaars wat beplan om onbepaald in hul huise aan te bly het ‘n baie wyer keuse om veranderings aan te bring wat in die tussentyd ook hul eie leefstyl sal verbeter.

“Dit beteken natuurlik nie hulle kan hul huis goedsmoeds in ’n paleis omskep in ’n buurt waar die meeste ander eiendom beginnershuise is nie omdat dit moeilik sou wees om sulke uitgawes te verhaal wanneer hulle wel eendag besluit om te verkoop, maar dit beteken dat hulle projekte wat ’n rukkie langer gaan neem om kostedoeltreffend te wees met vrymoedigheid kan aanpak.”

Hy skryf in die jongste uitgawe van die nuusbrief, Property Signposts, dat die vyf beste opknappingsprojekte om lewenstandaard te verbeter sowel as om waarde oor die langer termyn toe te voeg nou volgens terugvoering van verbruikers die volgende is: * Beter sekuriteit.

Bring ’n alarmstelsel aan of verbeter ’n bestaande een. Bring buiteligte of ligte wat aanskakel as ’n stroom verbreek word aan.

Versterk jou buite- en motorhuisdeure - jy sal groter gemoedsrus hê en jou huis sal groter aftrek onder voornemende kopers kry indien jy later besluit om te verkoop. * Beter energiedoeltreffendheid.

Behoorlike isolering, ‘n sonkragwarmwatertenk, ’n hittepomp, ’n windtubine of selfs ’n reënwatertenk sal meebring dat jy in die toekoms elke maand geld aan water en krag gaan bespaar en dit sal ook ’n groot bonus vir toekomstige kopers wees. * Buitegeboue.

As jy bediendekamers of selfs ‘n motorhuis het wat in ‘n mooi eenman- of eenslaapkamerwoonstel met ’n badkamer en kombuisgeriewe omskep kan word, behoort jy nie te huiwer nie.

Jy kan die woonstel verhuur om die verband in die eerste jare van huisbesit te help af te betaal en dit later as ‘n wooneenheid vir jou tieners, of as gasteverblyf of selfs as ’n tuiskantoor benut. Dit sal beslis aftrek onder toekomstige kopers kry, veral as jy in die tussentyd ’n veilige motorafdak opgerig het om die motorhuis te vervang. * Bykomende badkamer.

As jy beplan om minstens die volgende vyf jaar die eiendom te bewoon, is dit die moeite werd om ‘n bykomende badkamer te bou as die huis net een badkamer het - of om ’n derde badkamer in ’n huis met twee badkamers te bou.

Dit is ‘n redelike groot en duur projek maar dit sal almal se lewens vergemaklik - geen lang toue voor die badkamerdeur nie en geen getwis onder sibbe nie - en dit sal waarde toevoeg wat beslis oor die mediumtermyn verhaal kan word. * Tuiskantoor of studeerkamer.

As jy reeds ’n onbenutte vertrek of buitegebou het wat as ’n kantoor toegerus kan word, is dit beslis ‘n goeie idee.

Indien nie, is dit die moeite werd om ’n rustige werkplek weg van leefruimtes af in te rig.

So ’n ruimte kan benut word as ‘n plek waar kinders ongehinderd huiswerk kan doen of as ’n mediasentrum vir die gesin.

Khutsong consumers learn more

Last Saturday residents of Khutsong received the opportunity to learn more about their rights as consumers.

On this day Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Mr Nkosiphendule Kolisile, joined the residents of Khutsong to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day. According to Ms Nothando Zondi of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, March has been earmarked as the month to increase awareness about consumer rights, especially among poor communities.

Consumer perception surveys have also shown that consumer awareness is

very low among certain sections of Gauteng residents.

“Poor communities in the province are often victims of a host of consumer rights abuse such as unfair contract terms, sale of unsatisfactory and poor quality goods and failure of businesses to honour guarantees,” Zondi indicated.

Kolisile said that consumer awareness and education is an integral part of the mandate of the Department of Economic Development.

“Effective consumer protection can make an immense contribution to economic development and act as a catalyst

for growth and increased competiveness,” he said. The recent meat scandal, bread price fixing, collusion between life insurance companies and funeral undertakers are some of the examples that Kolisile cited as reasons to strengthen consumer awareness and education.

“For a very long time, business people

have been getting away with serious violations. In many instances, poor people are treated not as clients but beggars,” said Kolisile. Consumer investigators from the Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs (GOCA) were also present at the event and attended to consumer related complaints on site.

A large group of Khutsong residents attended the Consumer Day celebrations. Except for learning more, they could also enjoy entertainment such as the dance group below.

Cerise du Plooy Op 19 Maart het die SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue Federasie) landwyd Maatskaplike Werkersdag gevier.

Op hierdie dag het die SAVF erkenning aan maatskaplike werk as professie gegee, het hulle die leuse van “Kleur ‘n Lewe” uitgeleef en bou hulle steeds voort op die SAVF se visie van hoop.

Maatskaplike werkers moet voldoen aan ‘n toepaslike vier jaar BA (Maatskaplike Werk) graad, en moet ook jaarliks by die Raad vir Maatskaplike Diensberoepe registreer. Hulle word ook gebind deur ‘n etiese kode, en moet uitvoering gee aan verskeie wetgewings, waaronder die Wet op Kindersorg, asook Bejaardesorg. Maatskaplike Werkers gaan dikwels gebuk onder groot gevallewerkladings en word daagliks gekonfronteer met maatskaplike en sosiale uitdagings.

“As maatskaplike werkers nie meer draers van hoop is nie dan moet welsyn ophou bestaan,” sê die Direkteur van Maatskaplike Dienste van die SAVF, me.

“Om statistiek te gee van die verskil wat maatskaplike werkers daagliks maak, kan morbied wees. Ons sal moet vertel van kindermishandeling en geweld teen vroue en bejaardes wat daagliks mishandel word.” “Dalk moet ons net begin by die mense wat naby my is.

SAVF is daar waar dit saak maak. Dis nie ons taak om die ganse wêreld reg te maak nie, maar ons moet doen wat ons kan doen,” het sy werkers bemoedig.

“Deel daarvan is om draers van hoop te wees en om te gee. Jy spel “omgee” as moeite, nie as sit en wag dat goed gebeur nie. Omgee beteken moeite doen en dit is meer as omgee.” Of maatskaplike werkers die pad saam met ‘n ouer met ‘n kind aan sy hand stap of ‘n bejaarde met ‘n kierie vergesel, bly hulle doel nooit om te oordeel nie, maar om weg te stuur op die pad van hoop. Met die SAVF se ontstaan in 1904 was daar niks. Geen departemente, geen begrotings en subsidies nie, ook geen besighede en donateurs nie. Die eerste projek was ‘n tehuis vir ongehude moeders en in 1905 met oorlog en ellende was daar behoeftes

wat aangespreek moes word. Dinge het egter verbeter en tans toon statistiek dat die SAVF oor vyf provinsies heen jaarliks ongeveer 92 511 kinders se lewens kleur, hetsy by SAVF kinderhuise, statutêre optredes of SAVF kleuterskole.

Jaarliks word bykans115 141 gesinslede aan wie die SAVF dienste lewer se lewens geraak. Hetsy by voorkomingsprogramme, ouerleidinggroepe, Botswadi-opleidings of deurgangshuise, waar die hele gesin met ‘n sakkie in die hand opdaag en aan hulle ‘n heenkome gebied word.

Verder is die SAVF ook jaarkliks betrokke by ongeveer 38 468 bejaardes aan wie dienste in behuisingskemas, dienssentrums en ouetehuise gelewer word. Baie bejaardes word egter mishandel buite die fasiliteite in die gemeenskappe, waar maatskaplike werkers ook onmiddellik toetree.

Ongeveer 1.2 miljoen mense kon in die afgelope jaar dienste ontvang in die 5 provinsies waar SAVF aktief dienste lewer. Baie deure moes al gesluit gewees het as gevolg van groot finansiële verliese, maar die dienste bly voortbestaan danksy hulle alles-oorheersende-drang om hoop aan mense in nood te bring.

Suid-Afrika het die vyfde hoogste selfmoordsyfer wêreldwyd, want mense het ‘n behoefte om gehoor te word, versorg te word, vertroetel te word. Suid-Afrika se mense het ‘n groot behoefte om na omgesien te word.

“Moses het verskonings gehad soos baie van ons, maar dit het nie ‘n plek om te staan nie. Was die laaste opdrag dan nie ‘pas my skape op’ nie?” vra me. Suzette Oosthuizen, streekbestuurdar van die SAVF. “As die skaapkrale leeg is, moet ons hulle wat verdwaal het weer van dorp tot dorp gaan soek, plek tot plek en van hart tot hart. Want spore van liefde wat in mense se harte agtergelaat word, kan nooit uitgewis word nie.” “Wat sal hulle eendag op jou begrafnis sê? Nie hoe ryk jy was nie, maar wat was jou bydrae en omgee vir mense,” vertel Oosthuizen. “Die voetspore wat ons in mense se lewens agterlaat en die kniespore wat ons laat voor hulle by wie ons gebuk het om hulle voete te was, sal blywend in mense se harte wees.”

Ondersteun regte motorwagte in Fochville Cerise du Plooy Motoriste van Fochville moet seker maak dat hul mense wat as motorwagte geregistereer is, ondersteun.

Die GPF (Gemeenskaps Polisiëringsforum) het, met die hulp van ‘n plaaslike sakeman, baadjies vir motor-wagte laat maak.

Hierdie baadjies word teen R 10 per dag by die GPF gehuur en die gemeenskap asook die wag baat daarby.

Inwoners mag wonder hoe hulle enigsins by dié nuwe aksie kan baat.

Die antwoord is eenvoudig. “Ons gradeer al die wagte wat baadjies by ons kom huur elke dag. Ons weet presies waar hulle woon en het ‘n afskrif van hul ID-dokumente,” sê die sakeman.

Hy meen dat die besonderhede van hierdie wagte geen geheim is nie, en dit daarom veiliger is om hulle te gebruik.

“Ons vra dat voertuigeienaars nie vir die ander wagte geld sal gee nie,” vra hy. “Dit veroorsaak net dat hulle meer rede het om te bly. Baie van hulle koop gom of drank met die geld wat hulle maak en is by misdaad betrokke.”

Die geld wat in huur elke dag deur die ander wagte betaal word, word elke nou en dan per tjek aan die Fochvillepolisie uitgemaak en oorhandig.

Dit is maklik om hierdie wagte te identifiseer. Daar staan “Fochville Community Policing Forum” op die baadjies.

Fochvilleinwoners moet huise laat oppas Cerise du Plooy

Huisbrake in Fochville ruk hand uit en neem al meer toe.

“Ons wil graag hê dat inwoners van die dorp met ons moet kommunikeer,” het konst. Elsie Tshonte, woordvoerder van die polisie op Fochville, gesê. “Daar is ‘n register in ons aanklagkantoor waar inwoners hul name kan neerskryf wanneer hulle beplan om weg te gaan oor naweke en vakansies.”

Ander wenke wat Tshonte gee, is; kry vriende waarop jy kan staatmaak om jou huis op te pas of net ligte in die aand aan en in die oggend af te skakel.

Maak seker dat iemand die pos gereeld uit die posbus haal en dat gordyne oop- en toegemaak word.

Tshonte waarsku ook dat hekke en deure ten alle tye gesluit moet word, al is mens by die huis, want daar vind ook toenemende aantal huisrowe plaas.

83 new police officers in Merafong area

The communities of Merafong are 83 police officers richer, and hopefully this will improve the safety of the community.

These new constables started their police training at the Tshwane Police Academy in January 2011, and after two years of hard work, completed this

training on 1 March this year. On12 March, these newcomers to the police force in Merafong were welcomed and their ‘Constable’ rank insignia pinned on their shoulders by Brig. Zodwa Molefe, Cluster Commander of the SAPS in Merafong. They have been allocated to the different police stations in the cluster, namely Carletonville, Khutsong, Wedela, Fochville and Westonaria.

The 83 new police constables of the Merafong cluster, recently welcomed and awarded their rank insignia.

Wêreld-orgaanskenkersdag bring hulp vir baie siekes

Adele Louw Personeel van die Carletonville nier-dialisesentrum het die afgelope week inwoners bewus gemaak dat hulle nie hul niere se gesondheid agterweë moet laat nie.

Lede van dié sentrum het verlede Donderdag as deel van Wêreld-orgaanskenkersdag ‘n spesiale stalletjie in die Carletonville Pick n Pay-sentrum beman waar hulle nie net inwoners meer oor niergesondheid geleer het nie, maar ook mense vir moontlik nierprobleme getoets het.

Volgens een van dié sentrum se professionele verpleegsters, me. Mavis Sazinge, is daar sekere spesifieke siektetoestande wat maklik tot nierprobleme kan lei. Dit sluit diabetes en hoë bloeddruk in terwyl mense wat oorgewig is, ook ‘n groter kans vir nierprobleme het.

Volgens verpleegpersoneel is daar sewe wyses waarop mense na hul niere kan omsien. Diegene wat fiks en aktief bly, hul bloedsuikervlak onder beheer hou, hul bloeddruk gereëld laat meet, gesond eet en hul gewig dophou, nie rook nie en nie gereeld medikasie wat net oor die toonbank beskikbaar is, gebruik nie, het ‘n baie groter kans om hul niere gesond te hou as mense wat nie na dié faktore omsien nie.

Mense wat uit families met ‘n geskiedenis van nierprobleme kom, gereeld nier-infeksies of ander niersiektes kry en dehidrasie of groot bloedverlies deurgemaak het, kan ook nierproble-

me optel.

Kenmerke van nierprobleme sluit hoë bloeddruk, ‘n afname van urine, naarheid en braking en ‘n opgeswelde lyf in.

“Nierprobleme verander ‘n mens se hele lewe,” het ‘n inwoner van Carletonville, wat reeds die afgelope drie jaar dialise moet ondergaan, mnr. Johan Wallace (53), teenoor die Herald beaam.

Wallace, ‘n bekende sakeman van Carletonville, het reeds 25 jaar gelede ‘n nieroorplanting ondergaan omdat hy aan ‘n oorerflike nierkwaal ly. Sy nierfunksie het egter weer tot só ‘n mate agteruit begin gaan dat hy drie keer ‘n week vir vier ure lank dialise moet ondergaan. Hy mag ook onder meer geen geel groente of vrugte eet nie en moet boontjies en aartappels wat hy wil eet voor die tyd drie tot vier ure in water week omdat die kalium wat daarin voorkom, giftig vir nierpasiënte soos hy is. Hy moet ook so min as moontlik vloeistof inneem.

“Mense moet meer bewus gemaak word van nierprobleme sodat meer hul organe vir skenking beskikbaar kan stel,” sê Wallace.

Volgens verpleegpersoneel wat aan die aksie deelgeneem het, is altesaam 112 mense se bloed deur die loop van Donderdagoggend getrek. Van hierdie mense is 30 positief vir nierprobleme getoets.

Die meeste van dié mense het volgens die verpleegsters nie ‘n idee gehad dat hul dalk nierprobleme onder lede kon hê nie.

Theatre awards draw stars to Merafong

Last week Merafong played host to a number of glamorous stars who visited the area for the annual Ishashalazi Threatre Awards.

These awards is an initiative from the office of the MEC for sport Arts and Culture to give credit to outstanding theatre productions in the Gauteng Province. The project kicked off with auditions in all five Gauteng’s regions.

During this time, community halls and centres in the West Rand, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, West Rand, Tshwane and Johannesburg areas played host to a total of 188 productions and individuals who tried to see whether they had what it takes to proceed to the next audition phase.

The Department of Sports Arts and Culture employed the services of adjudicators from the industry to select the best 20 productions in the Gauteng region at the annual Ishashalazi festival.

These groups are selected and represent the demographics of the province.

Prior to the Ishashalazi Festival special workshops were also conducted to train those who showed talent in various aspects related to the theatre arts.

Those who qualified for this training received the opportunity to hone their skills in acting, directing and script writing. This induction took place at Amanzintaba Resort in the City of Tshwane.

The categories for 2013 Ishashalazi awards were for the best male actor, best female actor, best supporting female actress, best supporting male actor, best director, best set design, best script writer, most promising production, most developing production, best production, life time community theatre development award and best script written by a woman. There was also a

Mayoral special award, given out by the Excecutive Mayor, Ms Maphefo Mogale Letsie to the best group from Merafong to take part in the event as well as an ‘against all odds’ award.

It was, however, not only important dignitaries who got to enjoy the proceedings. The Ishashalazi road show took place last week Thursday and Friday.

The objective of this event was for celebrities to give a word of encouragement to all high schools in the Merafong City municipal area. It also helped to take the special ambiance of the Ishashalazi theatre awards to all residents.

Last Thursday a variety of stars visited the Umfundo and Thuto-Kitso Secondary Schools in Kokosi to give them the opportunity to talk to the students.

The next day all the high schools in Khutsong were visited.

“The sole purpose of these visits was to encourage and urge the students that there are no short cuts to success and that it is of paramount importance for students to go through the processing of what it takes to acquire success. Celebrities spoke of the backgrounds that they came from as individuals in order to infuse the spirit of possibilities among learners,” a spokesman of the municipality told the Herald after the event.

During the main awards ceremony that took place last Friday, the Carletonville Civic Centre was packed with a variety of theatre and television stars and other dignitaries. The play ‘Silver Coat & the Black Stick’ walked off with the prize as the best production while Amanda Tobo was awarded for being the best female actress. Alex Motswiri walked off with the prize as best direction while the production ‘The System’ won in the category for best script. ‘Pit-

These dancers gave a special flavour to the ceremony before awards were being given out.

The theartre awards were opened by an unusual choir of the Philadelphia Secondary School for learners with special educational needs.

The group 'Ubizo Maafrica' walked off with the Merafong City Mayoral special award, handed to them by the Mayor, Ms Maphefo Mogale Letsie.

The principal of Relebogile Secondary School in Khutsong, Mr Pule Metsing, also met up with some of the visiting stars last Friday.

Rotara pretloop lok weer baie deelnemers

Adele Louw ‘n Groot groep aktiewe inwoners het weer verlede week aan Rotaraskool se jaarlikse pretloop deelgeneem.

Dié byeenkoms is oudergewoonte by Hoërskool Wonderfontein gehou en oud en jonk kon wys wat in hulle steek.

Die pretloop het ondanks ‘n reënbui op 13 Maart plaasgevind.

“Hoewel daar minder inwoners as verlede jaar was, was dit steeds ‘n groot sukses,” het die skool se adjunkhoof, me. Marinda Robbertse, dié week aan die Herald gesê.

Verskeie fikses kon ook met pryse wegdraf.

Thabo Molane was die eerste man oor die eindstreep terwyl Anika Smit met die prys as die vinnigste vrou weggedraf het.

Petrie Robbertse van Carletonville Hoërskool het die hoërskool seunsafdeling gewen terwyl Nolene du Plooy van die Smithathlons-atletiekklub die eerste hoërskoolmeisie oor die eindstreep was.

Dominique Pienaar van Laerskool Dagbreek was die eerste laerskoolmeisie wat die wenstreep oorgesteek het.

rence McKay talle jonger inwoners gewys waar Dawid die wortels gegrawe het toe hy ook die wedloop voltooi het.

Part 2: Construction of an earth berm downstream of the Ikageng West Reservoirs to prevent the flooding of nearby households due to possible reservoir collapse and the erection of a security fence with associated signage to prevent trespassing and squatting of illegal households.

Part 3: Implementation of water infrastructure changes to take the Ikageng West Reservoirs out of operation and alterations to pipework and pumping station control systems to ensure interim water supply.

Fochville rolbal mik hoog Die afgelope naweek het lede van die Fochville-rolbalklub bymekaar gekom om die jaar af te skop.

Die klub het hul beginnerskompetisie gehou, wat spesiaal aangebied word vir diegene wat rolbal begin speel. Lede kan vir die eerste drie jaar na hul met die sport begin het, daaraan deelneem. Die speler wat die kompetisie wen, kan ook nie in die toekoms daaraan deelneem nie. Pieter Griesel is na afloop van die dag as die beginner-kampioen vir 2013 gekroon.

Links is Theunis Duvenage, naaswenner, en Pieter Griesel, die beginner-kampioen vir 2013.

Danielle behaal silwer by SA’s

Danielle Oelofse (11) het gedurende die SA’s laerskolekampioenskappe verlede naweek haar staal gaan wys en ‘n silwer medalje in die gewigstoot-item ingepalm.

Gedurende verlede naweek se kampioenskappe op Sasolburg het Danielle haar persoonlike beste gegooi.

Dié prestasie was met ‘n hele twee meter verbetering vanaf die D2-kampioenskappe waar sy ‘n prag 9.05 meter gestoot het.

Sy het dit behaal na haar afrigter en ma, Sanet Oelofse, haar vir ‘n hele twee weke voor die SA’s gedruk het. Sy het met 2.10 meter verbeter in die provinsiale kampioenskappe en ‘n derde plek verower.

Danielle het ‘n magtige 11.16 meter gestoot gedurende die SA kampioenskappe.

Haar rekord is vanselfsprekend omdat sy al vanaf verlede jaar die trappies klim om die jaar die silwerware te dra.

Sanet wat die rol as ouer en afrigter aanpak, was selfs ‘n gewigstoot en spiesgooi-atleet gedurende haar laerskool- en hoërskooldae.

Dit blyk dat die sport dik in hul are loop omdat Danielle se ouer sussie ook SA’s klere verwerf het vir gewigstoot onder haar ma se vlerke en nou word die bal gestoot na Danielle toe wat definitief die skoene volstaan.

Danielle is nie net ‘n goeie atleet nie

maar is ook ‘n slimkop wat in haar skool, Laerskool Losberg, se top 10 is.

Sy maak ook die seuns stil wanneer daar geboul word in die krieketspan.

Mens kon in Sanet se uitdrukking sien hoe trots sy op haar dogter is vir die prag prestasie. “ As ouer en afrigter is ek baie trots

op my dogter,” sê Sanet.

Danielle is beslis ’n atleet wat die moeite werd is om dop te hou in die toekoms.

Danielle Oelofse, saam met haar ma en afrigter, Sanet Oelofse, wat trots by haar dogter staan deur al hul harde werk.

Wes Wits ploeg terug in gemeenskap Vincent Mofokeng Wes Wits-rugbyklub het verlede week hul rugbystewels opsygesit en hul ondervinding en kennis by Laerskool Fochville se rugby gaan inploeg.

Laerskool Fochville het Wes Witsrugbyklub gevra om te help met afrigting en die Wes Wits-manne was baie

opgewonde om te help.

“Dit was lekker gewees om tegnieke en patrone met toekomstige Springbokspelers te deel,” sê Lesley Venton, voorsitter van Wes Wits.

Met die program kon die Witse ook nuwe tegnieke aan die afrigters oordra sodat hulle op hul beur ook aan die jong spelers nuwe dinge kan leer.

Thipane still championing at marathons

Mnr. Jannie Schutte, die skool se departmentshoof en sportorganiseerder,

verduidelik ook dat dit ’n openbaring was om te sien hoe senior klubs tegnieke en patrone inwerk om hulle spel te verbeter. Schutte sê ook dat hulle ‘n skitterende manier gebruik het om die jong spelers te leer omdat hulle so baie was. “ Dit was een van die beste afrigting- kursusse wat ek gesien het en dit was indrukwekkend,” sê Schutte.

Fochville seniors rol nog steeds Die jaarlikse mans en vroue senior enkels-rolbalkompetisie is die afgelope naweek gehou.

Die seniors kon op 16 en 17 Maart gewys het wat in hulle

steek.

Die kompetisie was vir mans en vroue bo die ouderdom van 60 jaar. Die seniors het die dag ersntig opgeneem dus was die

kompetisie taai. Helet Erwee het as wenner van die dames-afdeling weggestap en Angus Macdonald palm die wenplek in die mans afdeling in.

Die senior lede wat aan die enkels rolbal-kompetisie deelgeneem het, is Hennie van Loggerenberg, Helet Erwee, Bobby Lion, Bessie Fourie, Theunis Duvenage, Anita van Zyl, Ben Bredenkamp, Christine Strydom, Frank Mienie, Ansie Grobler en Angus Macdonald.

Barnard tough at the quad championships Vincent Mofokeng Don’t judge these girls on the colour of their lipstick.

Now, that is a fact when you are talking about the ladies competing in the recent 2013 SA National Off-road Quad Championship as these girls are just as tough as the guys when it comes to taking on the harshest conditions and finishing a grueling off-road race.

Amongst the many exceptional racers one of our very own was on the dusty and muddy track.

Liezel Barnard wasn’t just there for fun and games but took a great spot on the standings.

The ladies have been competing in off-road quad racing for years and have

produced results that served as a motivation to many male competitors. Some of these girls are back this season and although the numbers are somewhat down, the competition is still tight.

At the Vogelstruispan 200, in the opening round of the National Off-road Quad Championship that took place in February on a sandy and rutted 60 kilometer route outside Bela Bela in the Limpopo Province, the East London youngster, Chardri Monk came back with a vengeance after being out of action for the best part of the 2012 season due to a back injury.

Monk, racing for Team Thesens Generators on her trusted 450cc KTM quad, won the Ladies Quad Class and

Barnard with her big 800cc powered Can-Am Renegade around the tight trees on the route.

Three of the season’s races – all three Sprint Events of about 180 kilometres – will be in the Gauteng area where the bulk of competitors are based. They will also have to travel to Botswana for a Marathon Event consisting of a total of 1 000 kilometers (two days of 500 kilometers each) while two more races of 300 kilometers each will be held in the Hluhluwe area in KwaZulu-Natal and the Ventersdorp area in the North-West Province.

Monk’s opposition was somewhat thinned out with the demise of the young Polokwane rider, Adi du Plessis, who competes under the Evolution Racing banner with a Suzuki LTR450.

It was the first race in a long time for Du Plessis who also had an accident last year and had to recover from her injuries. A new member and resident from Carletonville, Liezel Barnard, walked away with a healthy amount of points as the runner-up in the Ladies Quad Class. Other than Monk, Barnard entered in the Silver Class Challenge and also claimed a podium position in this class with a third place. Monk and Du Plessis both compete with 450cc sport quads whereas Barnard had to handle her big 800cc powered C an-Am Renegade ( an utility quad) around the tight bends and trees on the route.

Such issues were not a problem for these girls who are ladies off the track, but while racing, they show the guys how it should be done.

The battle between Monk and Barnard will continue at the next event as only 10 minutes separated them at the season opener while Du Plessis can not be left out of the picture as she would like to make up for lost points.

The next round of the 2013 championship will take place on 27 April in the Bronkhorstspruit area in Gauteng. It will again be a Sprint Event where the fitness of the bends and competitors will be tested.

This victory came as a little bit of a surprise as she raced the full 180 kilometer distance (three laps of 60 kilometers) with a blown rear shock absorber resulting in a very uncomfortable four hours in the saddle.
