Cuypers back in action
Vincent Mofokeng Michael Cuypers (20), Merafong’s toughest triathlon athlete, recently took part in the BSG Energade Triathlon Series where he excelled. Cuypers, who took part in the Ironman World Championships that were held in September in Spain, came back with a bang in the triathlon circuit just to prove his stale after a period of resting. The BSG series consisted of five agonising races where these super-fit athletes had to endure a triathlon of a 600 meter swim, 20 kilometre cycle and a five kilometre run. Such a race is shorter than the normal triathlon but is much faster than the norm. The final race of the series, where Cuypers was on the stage with a mass elite athlete community of at least 1200 athletes, 700 of which was fellow competitors of his in the Junior Elite class, took place on Sunday.. Vanderbijlpark, where the event took place, was wet and windy, which tested
the athletes’ endurance to the very last breath. But the wind was the least of the competitors’ worries as there were some international professionals who came and joined in on the fun. Cuypers managed to bag a fourth place in the final race and took a fifth position overall, which is an excellent achievement as he competes against an older and more experienced crowd. The juniors are just a minute behind the pro-elites, which means the gap between them is becoming either smaller or the juniors are simply getting better. Cuypers has his eyes set on great things as his goals are getting higher and better. One of this determined athlete’s goals is the 2013 Ironman SA competition where he aims to obtain a top two position as he claimed a third position this year in his respective age group. Such a second place would secure him a spot to compete at the home of triathlon - San Diego, America. The humble Cuypers says he would just like to make it to the Ironman

World Championships, and a position is not that important, as it is already such a hassle to just make it. He also aims at making it to the long distance world championships that will be held in France. Cuypers is a hard and dedicated sportsman who follows a hectic daily routine that many of us would call torture. The elite athlete is up at 05:00 in the morning to embark on a five kilometre jog and training until 07:00 clock. Between 07:30 and 16:00 he is at work to earn a living. After work he still finds time to finish off the training that he started in the morning, and to end off his day he hits the books as he is studying BCom Financial Accounting with the hopes of becoming a Chartered Accountant. Great things definitely lie ahead for Cuypers in his personal, and especially his sporting future, especially with regards to the Ironman Circuit, as his head is set and his body extremely ready for any Ironman Challenge.
