Twee mans voor vir diefstal Die Herald het weer oor verskeie gebeure in sy uitgawe van 20 jaar gelede berig.

Die bestuurder van ‘n besigheid in Carletonville en nog ‘n man het in die landdroshof in Oberholzer verskyn in verband met die diefstal van staalpype ter waarde van bykans R48 000. Mnr. Michael Tsekouras (28), bestuurder van Taso’s Building in Van Zyl Smitstraat in Carletonville en David Robert Maguire (33) van 22 Umvotistraat Stilfontein, het Vrydag in die hof verskyn.

Volgens die polisie in Carletonville het National Trading Supplies in Klerksdorp ‘n klag by die polisie aanhangig gemaak, nadat pype ter waarde van R47 311,80 by die onderneming gesteel is.

Die polisie het die saak ondersoek en twee mans in hegtenis geneem. ‘n 38-jarige vrou van Fochville is in die landdroshof skuldig bevind aan be-

drog. Hester Sophia de Kock van Stinkhoutstraat 22, Fochville is gevangenisstraf van agt maande, opgeskort vir vier jaar, opgelê. Die saak spruit uit ‘n voorval op 19 Mei dieselfde jaar toe De Kock ‘n inbraak by haar huis aan die polisie gerapporteer en daarna ‘n versekeringseis vir R4 300 ingedien het. Die polisie het gevind dat sy die sogenaamde gesteelde goedere in haar woning se dak versteek het. Die Kock het skuld op ‘n aanklag van bedrog erken. Die hoof van die misdaadondersoekdiens in Fochville, ao. Kobus van der Berg, het die publiek teen versekeringsbedrog gewaarsku. ‘n Vrou van Carletonville is deur swendelaars van ongeveer R10 000 beroof toe sy gehoor gegee het aan die rowers se voorwendsels dat hulle haar geld sal verdubbel. Sy het vertel hoe sy eers nie die geld wou oorhandig nie, maar die man het ‘n rewolwer op haar gerig, die geld gegryp en gevlug. ‘n Woordvoerder van die polisie in die dorp het ‘n beroep op inwoners gedoen om onder geen omstandighede aan enige vreemdeling wat hulle sou nader, geld te oorhandig nie. ‘n Jongman en sy susterskind van Fochville het in ‘n motorongeluk gesterf. Mnr. Hendrik de Lange (22) en sy

suster se seuntjie Pieter du Plooy (8) van Garsstraat 78, Fochville was vanaf Nelspruit op pad huis toe, toe ‘n voertuig glo oor ‘n stopstraat gery en die voertuig van mnr. De Lange getref het.

Albei is op slag dood. Volgens die oorledene se pa, mnr. Piet de Lange, het sy dogter, me. Liana le Roux, haar twee seuns en Hendrik die naweek in Nelspruit gaan kuier. Die polisie in Nelspruit het gesê die kruising tussen Belfast en Middelburg waar die ongeluk plaasvind het, word baie swak aangedui en verskeie noodlottige ongelukke het reeds daar voorgekom.

Johannesburg Skydiving Club reaches new heights Adele Louw The Johannesburg Skydiving Club (JSC) in Carletonville heard last week that it has been chosen as a finalist in the provincial tourism awards.

The Herald recently reported that the JSC had won several trophies during the regional tourism awards. They scooped the trophy for offering the best ad-

venture experience for tourists and also walked off as the overall winner in the Tourism Experiences category. The club also won a special platinum award for its role in drawing tourists to the area. Its chairman, Eugene (Pottie) Potgieter, also won a special trophy for being a tourism ambassador for the area.

According to the West Rand District Municipality’s Tourism Officer, Ms Susan Hattingh, the district municipality entered a total of 123 businesses and organisations from the West Rand into the provincial competition. Of these, 20 were chosen to be part of the 54 provincial finalists.

“This is the first year that there are so many finalists from the West Rand. Winners of the competition will ensure a lot of free marketing for themselves and their towns,” Hattingh told the Herald.

She added that, as far as could be determined, the date for the Lilizela Awards has been set for 22 September.

“We are very excited over what the JSC has accomplished so far, especially keeping in mind that we are a sports club that is run by volunteers and not a business. It would be great if we can put Carletonville on the map by winning at the provincial competition,” Potgieter told the Herald.

Man found dead after hanging himself Kagiso Segone The Eye of the Wonderfontein Dam was the end of the road for an unknown man.

Herdsmen found his body hanging from a tree near the dam in Khutsong on Friday 21 August.

He had apparently hanged himself with shoelaces.

No information about the victim has been made public as the police are still investigating the incident.

A woman was stabbed to death and her friend is in the hospital after her estranged boyfriend attacked them in her own bedroom on 22 August.

The incident took place at No. 5129 in Khutsong Extension 2 late on Sunday night, after Sesi Motlhaoleng and her friend had been visiting another friend.

When they left, they decided to go to Sesi’s house. On their arrival, the friend noticed the boyfriend climbing out of a bedroom cupboard in which he appeared to have been hiding.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that he had come seeking revenge after the break-up. When he found no one at home, he gained entry into the house using a spare set of keys and hid away in the wardrobe until Sesi arrived.

When Sesi’s friend noticed that he was carrying a knife, she attempted to

stop him and was stabbed in the back.

The suspect then turned on Sesi and stabbed her under her left breast.

After she promised not to call the police, he left the house and the bleeding victims went to seek help from the neighbours.

Sesi and her friend were both transported to the main clinic in Khutsong by ambulance. The friend’s knife wound was treated, but police say Sesi was certified dead on arrival.

Police are investigating a case of murder and the suspect has since been arrested.

The family of the victim was shocked by the incident and did not want to comment as they had no idea what went on that night.

A close friend of the Motlhaoleng family escribes Sesi as a darling with a kind heart.

“She will be dearly missed,” she told the Herald.

The victims then sought the refuge of Shoprite Checkers. The boys who had witnessed the incident earlier apologised for not trying to help the women.

They were afraid that the suspects had weapons on them,” they said. But they did alert the police.

The police arrived and drove around to look for the suspects who were nowhere to be found. They accompanied the victims to Goudwes Primary School, where it was believed that the boys were learners.

The school organised an identity parade of all the latecomers, but none of the suspects was identified.

On further enquiry, one of the boys admitted that he had seen what had

happened but said he was too far away to recognise the offenders, Another told the police that he knew the suspects. He identified them and said one of them had been expelled. The other two are still learners of the school.

The school management said it was aware of similar incidents that had taken place on previous occasions. The suspect in question was expelled earlier for the same kind of behaviour.

Ek is ‘n 64-jarige dame en stap elke Sondag kerk toe.

Die 16de Aug. was ek ongeveer 60m vanaf die kerk toe ek deur ‘n swartman voorgekeer was wat daarop aangedring het dat ek my handsak moet oorhandig.

Toe ek weier het hy my met ‘n bottel in die hand gesteek en die handsak geneem. Ek is ook bewus van verskeie inbrake in uitbreiding 9. Ai ons sien feitlik nooit ‘n polisie voertuig wat patrollies ry in hierdie area nie.

Let’s talk about it- more community service Kagiso Segone Lately I have been feeling concerned about the crime rate, violence and many other challenges that we are facing in Merafong community.

I don’t know many people in my community who are happy and not much is being done to cure social ills. My biggest concern at the moment is the children who are exposed to- and have to grow up in this kind of environment.

There is no recreational or sports facilities. The young ones grow bored and some of them turn to substance abuse and crime to escape their circumstances.

Every single person has a different way of dealing with their problems, but we all seem to have one thing in common: We all want to see change. We all want life to improve, but...not one of us are willing to take the first step in the right direction. We lack ambition, we lack pride and we lack initiative. It is time that we realise: WE NEED TO BE THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE IN SOCIETY. Once we pick ourselves up, start taking responsibility and stop doing good deeds in the na-

me of fame or personal agendas, we might be able to save ourselves.

I predict that this will lead to people from far places recognising that our town could be a gold mine for opportunity.

We need to start with finding ways to serve our community. Young people must use their talents to shape the community for the better and the community must support young people’s initiatives. We need to nurture our young and our culture. Only if we work together we will be alive to witness change one

Government workers illegally start fires Adele Louw Workers who are part of the government’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) were on Monday caught red-handed while they were starting illegal fires in Wedela.

The Herald’s journalist was travelling to another story on Monday at about 10:30 when she and her passenger suddenly saw smoke on the side of the road leading from the main part of Wedela towards the new low-cost houses at Extension 3.

Upon closer inspection a group of EPWP workers, easily identified by their bright orange overalls, could be seen setting thorn bushes alight on the side of the road.

The workers also spread the fires

to other points by using dry sticks.

While driving past the new Wedela Library, a heap of burning rubbish could also be seen next to the fence of this facility.

As the only people in this area at the time were also EPWP workers, it was assumed that they had also started this fire.

About half an hour later another group of the so-called “EPWPs” could be seen in different area of Wedela where several small fires had just started.

“This action is certainly illegal,” the Fire Protection Officer under whose jurisdiction this area falls, Mr Nico Kahts, told the Herald the same day.

The Provincial Communications Officer of the Fire Fighting and Prevention Organisation ‘Working on Fire’ in the Gauteng Province, Mr Parapara Makgahlela, indicated in turn that people who are caught when they are illegally starting fires could be incarcerated.

“According to the legislation stipulated in the National Veld and Forest Fire Act of 1998 no one is allowed to start any outdoor fires from 1 August to the end of October, as such fires can easily spread during this time of the year and cause huge damage,” Makgahlela said.

“The people who started fires on this day were putting other peoples’ lives and properties at risk through their actions,” Makgahlela said.

He added that the government had held various information campaigns throughout the province, including Merafong, to educate people about the dangers of fire but some people seem to ignore the law.

According to Makgahlela, the Fire Protection Officer in whose jurisdiction a fire is started is responsible for enforcing the law.

According to Mr Tom Visser of the Gatsrant Fire Prevention Association, the culprits may be held accountable for the financial damages suffered by private land and property owners if a fire caused by them cause damage.

Questions about the matter were sent to the Merafong City Local Municipality on Tuesday, as the community workers often do certain tasks linked to municipal issues in municipal areas.

The municipality however denied any responsibility for the workers and referred the matter to Seriti, which is the agency for the Community Development Workers.

Although the municipality indicated that Mr Motlatsi Tsie is the local Seriti coordinator and even supplied his number to the newspaper, Tsie could not be reached for comment despite a message being left on his phone.

Trucks collide Kagiso Segone An accident involving two trucks occurred in the late afternoon on Wednesday, 19 August around 17:20 on the Khutsong road.

According to the truck driver who was carrying three other passengers he was coming from the Welverdiend direction and another truck was driving behind him on high speed.

When the driver who was driving in front attempted to turn right towards Khutsong South, the other truck that was travelling behind him hit them from behind and the two trucks overturned.

Both drivers and three passengers were taken to hospital. Another accident took place on 21 August at the R500 and R54 crossing where two vehicles collided at the intersection. A 21-year-old man who was in a critical condition was rushed to Vereeniging Medi Clinic.

The other occupant was treated on the scene by Netcare and then also transported to Vereeniging for further treatment.

Besoedeling duur steeds voort Die afgelope week het dit weer aan die lig gekom hoe ons omgewing deur die myne besoedel word.

Mense wat in die omgewing van Blyvoor woon, weet al die afgelope jaar of wat dat Augustus en September net een ding bring - mynslik wat van ‘n verlate mynhoop af die lug inwaai en met tye só dig is dat motoriste hul hoofligte moet aanskakel om daardeur te kan sien. Sakelui en inwoners het al kriminele klagte oor dié besoedeling aanhangig gemaak, maar niks is tot op hede gedoen om die probleem op te los nie. Intussen het onlangse watermonsters getoon dat die vlakke van die radioaktiewe metaal uraan in van die dele van die Wonderfonteinspruit waar dit deur ons gebied vloei, hopeloos te hoog is.

Hoewel dit lyk of die hewigste besoedeling dalk van buite ons gebied mag kom, bly dit ‘n

voldwonge feit dat myne aanhou om dié rivier te besoedel. Die afgelope week het baie Gautengse inwoners naels gekou oor die moontlikheid dat ‘n beplande staking deur personeel van Rand Water tot ‘n onderbreking in watervoorsiening kon lei.

Ons is totaal van Rand Water vir watervoorsiening afhanklik omdat die meeste waterbronne in ons omgewing deur dekades só deur die myne besoedel is, dat dit gevaarlik is om dié water te drink. Baie van dié besoedeling het in tye voorgekom toe wetgewing teen besoedeling nie só streng was nie. In dié stadium is daar die nodige wetgewing om besoedeling te voorkom. Die feit dat niks egter aan diegene wat vir die lug- en waterbesoedeling in ons omgewing verantwoordelik is gedoen word nie, wys net weer dat die mees wonderlike wette niks vir inwoners beteken indien die regering wat dit moet toepas, hul plig versuim nie.

Concerned resident Rand Water raised a nice smoke screen when it was suggested that poor water treatment was the cause of the degradation in the Merafong water network infrastructure and reservoirs.

The three questions posed have not yet been answered, however. These were, for how long has the water been damaging pipelines and reservoirs? What is Merafong doing to bring this to the supplier’s attention, and whether there is anyone at Merafong who is qualified to answer this question?

Rand Water gave a vague explanation (typically corporate) that the water quality adheres to the SANS 241:2005 standards, and that the organisation benchmarks the water quality against the World Health Organisation (WHO) drinking water quality guidelines.

Sadly, though, Rand Water should know of the later edition for Drinking Water Standards, being SANS 241:2015, meaning that the standard they apply has been outdated for the past ten years.

Now, this new standard stipulates that, when conducting the water quality risk assessment to determine which water quality parameters should be monitored, not only health determinants but also determinants of operational importance should be considered. If identified as a risk, these should also be included in the monitoring programme.

This could mean that one would need to

monitor for additional elements not specified in the SANS 241 and WHO guidelines.

If Rand Water were to conduct this initial risk assessment, it would confirm that the water is corrosive and adjust their operations to correct this. This would effectively prevent our pipes from rusting and get thinner and losing structural integrity.

If Rand Water does, indeed, stabilise the water properly, then it would surely have made a point of saying that the stability is being monitored and produce evidence to that effect.

The new SANS 241-2015 Standard also stipulates that a risk assessment should be conducted whenever a new distribution system is put into service, or when a distribution zone is altered or recommissioned.

The 007 reservoir was by-passed recently and, from what the Herald has indicated regarding the one in Khutsong, I imagine the same has been done there.

This requires a risk assessment to be conducted, the outcome of which would confirm that the pipes are corroding because is not being adequately stabilised. In such cases, control measures are put in place, which they failed to mention.

I will ask no more questions as, based on the vague response, I doubt that they will be answered either. And, very sadly, the ratepayers will have to pay for the damages.

Hollow ring to promises for new houses Adele Louw Despite numerous promises from the government, no new houses have been constructed in Khutsong Extension 3 so far.

People staying in Khutsong Ext. 3 have been complaining for years that there are still no housing developments in this area. The Herald, in turn, has been reporting on their aspirations – and frustrations. Their hopes were raised briefly in November last year when officials and councillors allegedly told them that the first housing project would commence on 10 November.

While the Merafong City Local Municipality admitted that a contractor, uVuko Civils, had been appointed by the Gauteng Department of Human Settlement and introduced to the community on 9 November, they say no commitment was made that building would actually proceed.

At the time, the municipality announced that the construction of the show houses would commence before the end of November 2014 and be completed before the compulsory site closure on 12 December 2014. The construction of the outstanding units was set to commence in January this year, depending on the approval by province.

Despite these promises, there was no evidence of any construction this week.

To make matters worse, the show houses that were built by the contractor were demolished by the middle of June.

Although most of the building materi-

Questions about fire station problems Adele Louw Allegations that all are not well at fire stations in the Merafong municipal area came to light this week.

According to a statement released on Sunday, there was only one functioning fire truck available to serve the area’s approximately 198 000 residents. According to the release there were also no drills, ongoing training or fire prevention activities taking place in the area.

There have been allegations of problems at fire stations in the area before with community members pointing out to the Herald’s journalist that there seems to be no activity at the Khutsong Fire Station.

Although the DA alleged “The Khutsong and Fochville Fire Stations had no operational firefighting equipment,” Fochville’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr Nico Kahts, confirmed that this fire station has a recently repaired fire truck as well as other equipment.

Carletonville’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr Tsemane Tsotetsi, in turn told the Herald that although three of Carletonville’s vehicles are currently in for repairs, two might again be ready for use by this week. He further indicated that although an employee has been left to answer phones at the Khutsong Fire

Station, most of the personnel from this station are currently operating from Carletonville as the most fires in the area occur in the region of this town.

Tsotetsi also rubbished claims by the DA that there are no drills, ongoing training or fire prevention activities taking place. When the Herald contacted him on Tuesday, Tsotetsi indicated that he was in fact at the district offices with personnel that had to be trained. He added that other training and drills also take place regularly. He added that although activities related to fire prevention is often conducted from national government level, local personnel also sometimes distribute information on fire prevention at schools or in the community.

With regard to allegations that personnel has not received new uniforms in three years, Tsotetsi indicated that although this can be true for some personnel, the tender process to acquire new uniforms had already started towards the end of the previous financial year, which ended in June.

Tsotetsi however told the Herald that problems have been experienced due to water interruptions or pressure problems in Carletonville and Khutsong, one such case being at the huge fire that broke out at the Khutsong Police Stati-

The same water interruptions and pressure problems that have recently affected other members of the public, also have an effect on the operation of fire fighters.

“Although the municipality is, by law, supposed to notify us of water problems, this is not always done,” Tsotet-

si indicated.

He further added that the maintenance of fire hydrants has to be done by the Merafong City Local Municipality and that there are two types or hydrants, some being on top of the ground while others are buried under the ground and identified by yellow stones.

A fight between two notorious gangs took place on Friday 14 August in Khutsong.

The battle took place at the soccer grounds in Ext.3 near the water tank.

The two gangs that were involved were

the “Casanovas” and “Creatures.” On the Friday afternoon at approximately 17:00 the two groups started chasing each other with dangerous weapons across the soccer grounds.

The incident took place before the police arrived and the groups then dispersed later in the evening.

Many young people also get trapped into a mentality of wanting to impress someone else, like buying a specific clothing brand that costs a fortune just to impress a girl or a guy. From humble beginnings to big dreams Sipho Mashaba From humble beginnings, Lucky Zamani Mandlalela has been nominated for the Best Community Builder title in the Platinum Youth Entertainment Awards.

The talented radio personality, producer and DJ, also known as Gen Deepstar Musiq, grew up in a small rural area called Rampampaspoort outside Rustenburg. He was raised by a single mother, Elsie Mandlalela.

In 2005, they moved to Ventersdorpto give Lucky a better education.He went to Kgololosego Primary and later to Wedela Technical High School, where he matriculated in 2011.

From there, he went on to study media at Play Broadcast Media.

HR Superintendent HRD

The incumbent will be responsible to manage the HRD Department by optimising HRD processes, HRD systems and procedures, legislative compliance, project management and the delivery of an efficient and effective consultancy service to employees and role players by providing expert advice on Human Resources Development issues. Responsibilities will include to manage and coordinate all functions relating to technical competency training of mine employees and contractors, management of the HRD team, HRD strategy, plans and schedules, convene, administer and provide HRD input for career development, recruitment, performance management, talent management, employee retention and succession planning, departmental budget and training costs and to compile monthly, quarterly and annual HRD reports.

The ideal candidate will have a Degree or Technikon Diploma in Human Resources Development or equivalent qualification with 8 years’ relevant experience in Mining Technical Training of which 2 years’ should be in a managerial role. An understanding of the South African Legal Framework and Labour Legislation that impact on Human Resources Development, a Blasting Certificate or Engineering Trade Certificate and MQA knowledge are also required.

Experience as a Mine overseer would be advantageous.

In making the final selection, consideration will be given to achieving the Samancor Chrome’s employment equity and the mining charter objectives.

Kind-hearted model is representing South Africa in Brazil Sipho Mashaba Refilwe Padi from Carletonville (12) is currently representing SA in a modelling competition in Brazil.

The young talent says she started â&#x20AC;&#x153;posing and shaking her bodyâ&#x20AC;? when she was 8 years old and realised, then, that she wanted to be a model. She also started entering modeling competitions around that time.

Refilwe is excited about the trip and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to take part in the competition. Her parents are very proud and supportive of her modeling career.

Sandra Jan van Vuuren, Refilweâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s modeling teacher, also designs her outfits for competitions Refilwe draws her inspiration from the lovely smile of her role model, Irina Shayk.

She believes strongly in compassion and reaching out to those in need.

On Sunday, 16 August, her parents accompanied her to an orphanage in Khutsong, where she handed out clothing to the children. She also brought along a big cake and spent time bonding with the young children and got to know them better.
