The crime rate in Amethyst Street in Carletonville soared alarmingly over the last few months, and shop owners have complained that the street is now regarded by the public as being dangerous. Worried businessmen have appealed to the police to take a firm hand and weed out the thugs preying on their innocent customers.

Police reports show that since the beginning of June, thirteen cars have been broken into, two people have been attacked and robbed, and cases of theft and housebreaking have been reported.

The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) held a couple of events to celebrate its work in the community in June.

The day’s activities also included talks by two motivational speakers, Kagiso Malete and Julius Mhlanga, in remembrance of those who are addicted and the families affected by substance abuse. Driver shoots and kills hijacker

Cerise du Plooy The driver of a small, five ton truck, recently gave hijackers a little bit of their own medicine.

The driver was transporting construction material on the five ton truck along the N14 from Krugersdorp toward Ventersdorp.

Along the way, the driver stopped and gave two hitch-hikers a lift.

Near the Rodora turn-off, a blue Volkswagen Jetta stopped the truck and forced the driver to pull off the road. They asked him why he was giving hitch-hikers lifts without permission, claiming to be from a taxi association in Carletonville.

The truck driver apologised and explained that he was not aware that he was not supposed to do this.

“They said he had to go to their association’s office with them,” said Detective Col. Wessel Prinsloo of the Carletonville SAPS. The man seemed to have cooperated with the suspects up until this point.

They then approached the Vlakdrif fourway intersection, and as they stopped, a red Toyota RunX pulled up behind the truck, and the driver knew something was wrong.

The occupants of the RunX got out and suddenly the Jetta and RunX occupants started getting aggressive with the driver and a fight broke out between the driver and these men.

The driver then took out his 357 Magnum revolver and fired a few shots at the men.

He shot one man in the back and then sped off to the Carletonville Police Sta-

tion in his truck to report the matter.

The Carletonville Police sent a look-out to all the surrounding stations, providing them with descriptions and to look out for a wounded man.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, the Moroka Police Station in Soweto called and said that a man fitting the description with a similar wound had been admitted to a nearby clinic. It was also at

this clinic, that the man passed away.

It was later established that the man was indeed one of the hijackers whom the driver shot, and furthermore had, in the past, been convicted of hijacking, theft of motor vehicles, as well as ATM bombing.

An inquest docket has been opened, and is investigated by a Provincial Investigations Unit.

Blyvoor plant manager sentenced Cerise du Plooy A former plant manager of the Blyvooruitzight Mine has been sentenced.

On January 16, Mr Sarel Barkhuizen was found in possession of 38.5 grams of fine gold.

The value of the material in

Barkhuizen’s possession was estimated at R 16 786 and he was arrested by members of the SAPS’ s Organised Crime Unit.

After thorough investigation by the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Vanessa Meyer, as well as a guilty plea

by Barkhuizen, the case went on trial in the Oberholzer Magistrates Court.

On June 9 Barkhuizen was sentenced to R30 000 or two years imprisonment.

In addition, he received a five year sentence, suspended for five years on the condition that he is not found guilty of the same offence again.

The gold was returned to the provisional liquidators of Blyvooruitzicht.

In the meantime, another former mine manager of Blyvoor, will go on trial on August 7 and 8.

Electric blanket vs cardboard box Cerise du Plooy Talk about winter, how cold it is, and how there are poor people freezing, becomes a little boring after a while and somehow just doesn’t have the effect those who want to bring about change wish it would.

I look at myself and my life, and realise that I myself, who deals with poor people, who deals with the less privileged and the cold and needy and hungry, don’t even understand the impact winter has on those who have nothing.

I set my electric blanket at its highest level every night, well in advance of bedtime, because when my feet are cold I cannot sleep. No matter how many jackets and blankets and heaters I have, if my feet are cold I’m buggered.

Before bedtime, I eat nice warm food.

Real winter food: Soup, Stew, Lasagne, and curry and rice. The list goes on.

I watch television while I sip on my tea or hot chocolate, milo or coffee. I take a long warm bath. When the water

gets too cold for my liking and I can no longer see steam, I top it up with more boiling water. I have a geyser, so why not put it to full use.

By the time bedtime breaks, I go to my heated room, take off my big, fluffy, pink gown and super woolly slippers and get into bed. My bed is like a heated pad they use for bearded dragons. Come to think of it, few people have bearded dragons without heating pads in their cages, as they need to be warm, constantly. It is their natural instinct to sunbathe out on a rock somewhere in the wild, when they are free. We give them, or try to give them the same comforts nature does.

Back to myself - before I get mistaken for a dragon. My bed is so heated and warm that it is barely impossible not to fall asleep instantly, far away from the cruel, grappling hands of winter chill.

I sleep like a baby, the settings of the electric blanket at just medium or low now (high gets too hot) and in the morning when I rise, it’s a cup of steaming hot tea first.

Then it’s another long hot bath, deciding which coat and scarf and gloves and socks and jersey and boots to wear. When the outfit is sorted, it’s off to work in my heated car, the heater on full-blast and the radio playing nice tunes to warm the soul.

I can only begin to imagine the contrary and as I do, I shiver and shake and my skin is covered in goose bumps from tip to toe.

I can only imagine waking up from probably hardly any sleep, on a concrete pavement in an ally somewhere. Holes in my shoes, if I have any. A thin, worn-out jersey (if even) with just a cardboard box as a blanket or mattress (the choice is mine).

Brushing my teeth - not possible, as there is no running water. Bathing - not

even an option. And in the rare case that it is, it is in freezing cold water.

Eating? What’s that? And in the rare case that there is food - it is dry bread bought with a few begged-pennies and solely for survival.

There is no bed, blanket, pyjamas, kettle, geyser, food. There is no comfort. All there is, is the cold, so chilly that it makes your bones ache and your body quiver.

Perhaps this is just something to think about when we are enjoying our luxuries, our refuges from the killing cold?

“I couldn’t help notice that he looked a bit stranger than usual. Only after our conversation, I looked down at his feet and realised he wasn’t wearing shoes. Surprised I asked him about it and he told with dismay that his shoes broke. This was just after 07:00 on one of our colder winter days.

I left, deeply touched by the basic

needs people sometimes go without. I am privileged. I could walk to my office with warm feet. I immediately put my bag down in my office and made it my mission to get him shoes.

After a few conversations with friends and colleagues, John had warm feet.

Can you all please have a look in your closets for the shoes you do not really need anymore?

Our homeless community can do with those. Warm clothes or blankets as well as tin food that you can spare will be greatly appreciated.

The SAVF’s Winterhoop Campaign is 14 years old and all community members are invited to be a part of it.

Churches, organisations, businesses and the media are all involved in

this countrywide campaign to bring relief.

The SAVF is also currently teaching the elderly and homeless to knit and sew, thus providing for their own needs.

They appeal to community members to help them with this, by donating all their scraps of material.

A list of needed items is; blankets, warm clothing, non-perishable foods, wool and material-scraps and financial donations which can be paid into the SAVF Oberholzer Account at ABSA, Branch Code 632005 and Account number; 0300151116.

The SAVF extends a warm thank you to all those who make it possible for them to bring relief and colour a life this winter.

In a touching story, a social worker tells of the challenges faced by those who are cold this winter, and what the SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue Federasie) does to try and help to bring relief.

“Winterhoop” is a yearly campaign to collect blankets, clothing and food for the homeless. The name means: “Giving Hope during winter.”

“I met someone today - let’s call him John to protect his dignity,” Ms Suzette Oosthuizen of the SAVF writes. “When I got out of my car, I saw John and his beloved dog that he cares for like a child. He spends his last cents caring for her. She had babies recently and he was very sad because he could not keep the babies. I was somewhat relieved,

Die huis waarin hulle by die aftree-oord woon, is in haar naam geregistreer.

Mev. Van Deventer probeer elke maand seker maak dat sy haar munisipale skuld so gou as moontlik vereffen.

Dié taak word egter bemoeilik deur amptenare by die munisipale kantore in Fochville wat volgens die egpaar nie lyk of hulle ‘n idee het wat met die rekeninge aangaan nie.

“As ek iemand geld skuld, sal ek dit vir hulle gee,” sê mev. Van Deventer.

Volgens mnr. Van Deventer moes hulle al telkemale die afgelope jaar na die munisipale kantore gaan, nadat hulle hul rekening laat ontvang het. Hul probleme steek egter kop uit sodra hulle die munispale amptenare vra om hulle met die rekening te help. In Januarie, byvoorbeeld, was die egpaar se uitstaande rekening R372, wat hul dadelik betaal het. Toe hulle in Februarie navraag gaan doen het omdat hulle nog nie hul rekening ontvang het nie, het ‘n amptenaar aangedui dat hulle die munisipaliteit R1 486 skuld. Op die rekening wat die egpaar in Maart ontvang het, is daar egter weer aangedui dat hulle te veel betaal het en dat die muni-

sipaliteit hulle inderdaad R517.84 skuld. Teen April het die munisipaliteit hulle blykbaar nog R448.09 geskuld terwyl hulle in Mei weer R80.88 moes betaal. Mnr. Van Deventer het ‘n rekening waarop ‘n amptenaar die hoë bedrag in haar eie handskrif daarop geskryf het, aan die Herald gewys. Groot was die egpaar se verbasing toe hulle die afgelope maand na die munisipale kantore toe is en gehoor het dat hulle blykbaar meer as R10 000 skuld. “Hoe kan ons soveel skuld? Ons het nog nooit in die verlede ‘n rekening van oor die R500 gehad nie. Nie eens besighede gebruik so baie krag nie,” het mnr. Van Deventer gekla. Volgens Van Deventer het hy en sy vrou in die Fochville munisipale kantore rondgevra of daar nie dalk iemand is wat hulle kan help om te verklaar waar die uitstaande geld vandaan kom nie. Nie een van die amptenare aan diens kon egter meer inligting verskaf nie. Blykbaar sou iemand wat meer weet, eers teen die afgelope Maandag terug op kantoor wees. Volgens mnr. Van Deventer het van die amptenare hulle ook al in die verlede na die munisipale kantore in Carletonville vir meer inligting verwys. Met hul aankoms in Carletonville, is hy en sy vrou net weer na Fochville teruggestuur. “Hoe is dit dat niemand ons kan help nie? Dit lyk of die mense wat in Fochville met die rekeninge werk, nie weet wat om te doen nie,” het mnr. Van Deventer aan die Herald gesê. Volgens die munisipaliteit is Van Deventer se rekening op dié tydstip op datum. Personeel wat met die publiek werk, is daarop gewys dat hulle moet seker maak dat hulle korrekte inligting gee .

Many new low-cost house owners untraceable

Some beneficiaries also take days to claim their keys after they are notified that their houses are ready. Once a house has been completed, it immediately becomes the responsibility of the new owner to look after it. If the owner does not take possession of the house, the municipality does not have a budget to repair damages that might result from this.

Owners who find structural problems at their new houses must report these within three months, as the contractors building the houses can then still be held responsible for the problems. Such problems can be reported

The Merafong City Local Municipality is currently having a big problem with owners who cannot be traced when their new low-cost houses are ready.

According to the municipality’s Housing Manager, Mr Lemmy Jofile, many people who have applied for low-cost houses do not update their contact particulars with the municipality. The municipality is thus unable to contact these owners once their houses are ready.

“We are kindly requesting people whose contact numbers or place of residence have changed to please contact the municipality to inform us of these changes,” says Jofile.

He added that although the municipality tries to have completed houses filled as soon as possible, it currently has keys to more than a 100 houses in its possession of which the owners cannot be traced.

“We have an agreement with the builders and they let us know which houses will be completed soon so that we can let the beneficiaries know that they can move in soon. This is done in order to prevent these houses from being vandalised,” Jofile told the Herald.

Despite these steps from the side of authorities, some beneficiaries do not bother to let the municipality know if their telephone number or address change. Many also Municipal employees Ms Princess Sefako, Ms Agi Nyaniso do not even tell their and Ms Ntombi Majola with only some of the keys belonging neighbours where they to houses that are still unclaimed.

Jofile also called on residents of the new housing areas to immediately report water and sewage leakages. These are not only unpleasant to live next to, but the water might also do structural damage to the houses as they are built on dolomitic ground. Such problems

can be reported to the municipal call centre at 018 788 9677.

Jofile added that except for such hiccups, the process to build new houses is currently progressing quite well. By June 30, 4 132 houses had already been completed. A total of 5 065 had already been completed up to their walls while 5 226 foundations had also been laid.

Residents also have a role to play This week the Herald is reporting that a large number of keys for new lowcost houses are lying unclaimed at the municipality.

The newspaper often reports about things that the municipality and other government structures or departments do wrong. Citizens and residents do have certain democratic rights when it comes to the services that should be delivered to them.

With rights, however, also come some responsibilities. Many people qualifying for low-cost houses have not yet received their new homes. Some have waited in vain for years to be assisted and one cannot help to feel sorry for them. If the only reason why people are not receiving their houses is the fact that they did not bother to update their contact details at the municipality, it is then solely their responsibility if they have to suffer through the winter without a house.

No-one will buy, say for instance, a

sheep without making sure that whoever they are buying it from has the right address to deliver it to.

Why is it then that people do not bother to make sure that authorities have the right contact details for the delivery of the keys for their house – which is arguably the most expensive possession that they will ever have in their life? To make matters worse, the time that officials waste to track down people that did not make sure that their correct details are with authorities could have been used to help others to whom receiving a new house matters more. If people continue to be so negligent about something so big, the only way to discipline them might be to give only a time during which houses must be claimed. After that time the house is given to someone else, with the original owner whose details were not correct having to wait another year or two until a new house is built for them.

oor alles wat ons gedoen het, of dit goed was of sleg (2 Kor 5:10).

Feliks het die leer van Christus wat “die Weg” genoem is taamlik goed geken (Hand 24:22), maar toe Paulus praat oor die komende oordeel, het hy bang geword en die gesprek beëindig (Hand 24:25).

Hy is deur die woord van die Here aangespreek, maar hy het die geleentheid om ‘n christen te word, laat verbygaan. Hy het nie kans gesien om sy sondige lewe te laat staan en op die pad van gehoorsaamheid en selfbeheersing te loop nie.

Agterna het Feliks dikwels met Paulus gepraat, maar nooit weer oor die geloof nie. Hy het steeds gehoop dat Paulus hom sou probeer omkoop om vrygelaat te word (Hand 24:26).

Almal wat deur die geloof aan die Here verbonde raak, is gelukkige mense wat honger en dors na wat voor God reg is. Hy sal hulle hartsverlange bevredig! (Die Nuwe Lewende Vertaling, Matt 5:6).

As ‘n mens God ken, kan jy jouself dissiplineer (Die Nuwe Lewende Vertaling, 2 Pet 1:6).

Dit lyk vir Wysneus of daar deesdae al meer bestuurders is wat nie mooi weet wat om op die pad te doen nie. ‘n Kollega van Wysneus vertel dat sy onlangs effens vieserig geword het toe sy gou iets in Fochville wou gaan koop.

Sy het uit Losberglaan uit gedraai om by die parkering by die President Hyper Sentrum aan die kant van KFC en die ander besighede in te draai. Skaars was sy in die parkering, toe ‘n groot koeldranklorrie die pad versper.

Dit was egter nie die koeldranklorrie wat die meeste gepla het nie.

Sien, sulke aflewerings moet mos maar gedoen word en daar is nie altyd ‘n ander plek vir die aflaai-voertuie om te stop nie.

Die grootste probleem was egter die bestuurders wat om een of ander rede skielik van alle hoflikheid en logiese denke vergeet het toe hulle agter die vragmotor te lande kom.

Municipality responds on corruption Adele Louw

The Merafong City Local Municipality this week responded on the issue of millions being misspent in its ranks.

The Herald last week reported that minutes of an internal audit committee meeting revealed that irregular transactions to the amount of R28 093 903.79 had occurred at the municipality between 2010 and 2012. Although the municipality indicated at the time that a response would be given “in due course”, a full response on the issue was already sent to the Herald on Tuesday.

In its response, the municipality acknowledged that such a meeting did indeed take place.

“Clarity is however not provided by the Herald on a number of important issues,” a municipal spokesperson indicated. He then went on to explain that the Audit Committee of a municipality is a Section 79 Committee, which exists in each municipality. It is an independent advisory body which, in terms of Section 166 of the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act, has several functions. It must advise the municipal council, the political office bearers, the accounting officer and the management staff of the municipality on matters relating to internal financial control and internal audits, risk management, accounting policies, the adequacy, reliability and accuracy of financial reporting and information, performance management, effective governance and any other issues referred to it by the municipality. The Audit Committee consists of private individuals which are appointed for a period to assist the municipality in overseeing its functions. The members of the Audit Committee are not officials of council.

“It is important to understand the difference between a Section 70 Committee and a Section 80 Committee. A Section 79 Committee reports to council, a Sec-

tion 80 Committee reports to the Mayoral Committee. The Audit Committee is therefore a Section 79 Committee and the independent MPAC is a Political Committee and reports to the Mayoral Committee,” the spokesman indicated.

“It follows if the management of the municipality institutes an investigation into alleged fraud and the reports indicate it plausible that the alleged fraud took place. Then it will be discussed between the top management of the municipality, the political leadership and the Audit Committee. The one aspect which is not clear is the motivation of the official or councillor who made this highly confidential document available to the Herald. The reason can only be to cause political embarrassment or to derail the ongoing investigation into the fraud that is being investigated,” the spokesman added.

“It is correct that the two firms mentioned in the report were appointed by the municipality to investigate various issues regarding procurement in the municipality. • The terms used in the article by the Herald “might have” indicate the problem that the municipality was faced with at the time.”

“It would be difficult if not impossible for the municipality to take action successfully against a person on a “might have” suspicion. The Herald further correctly indicated that the actual report was not submitted as part of the documents for the meeting. The reason given in the article, namely that “It was highly confidential and names of some people, some in senior positions are being mentioned in the report” is however not correct. The fact of the matter is that the report was not released, since it has not officially been handed over by the consulting firm. The concern of management was that should the report be handed over officially it would lead to a situation where the accused parties would be able to cover their tracks. For this rea-

Blyvoor village also under threat Adele Louw The future of the village at Blyvooruitzicht is also under threat as the new owners struggle to get an income from residents living there.

A property developer from Rustenburg, Liz Gericke of Double D & G Building Contractors took control of the village at Blyvoor in January this year after she managed to persuade Eskom not to cut off the electricity supply to houses because of outstanding debt.

Blyvoor’s village and mine have been under siege since August last year when the mine’s previous owner, the company Village Main Reef, also known as Village, indicated that it will not take responsibility for the mine’s losses anymore. In the meantime, DRDGold, the company which had owned Blyvoor before, also indicated that it does not want anything to do with the mine.

As a result of these problems, Blyvoor’s mine and village were put up to be sold separately in order to save them.

The mining part recently ran into trouble when it was sold to the controversial company Goldrich Holdings (Goldrich).

Although Goldrich was removed as owner after a court order was gained by the mines’ liquidators in May, the company is still busy with a legal quest to try to gain control of the mine again.

According to one of Blyvoor’s provisional liquidators, Mr Leigh Roering, Goldrich is still trying to appeal against this sentence at the Supreme Court of Appeal after their first attempt to appeal was dismissed. In the meantime, the liquidators are continuing to sell off any redundant assets at the mine to get in money.

In the meantime, Gericke has also been fighting an uphill battle to get money from people staying in the village.

According to Roering, she indicated that she wanted to get out of a deal to save the village after violence erupted when electricity in a part of the village was switched off about two weeks ago.

Plans are, however, currently being made for her to get some money for the running of the village in by selling a rock stockpile.

“Letting go of the village is something that just cannot be left to happen. Eskom will immediately switch off the electricity and the electrical infrastructure will be raped and plundered within three to four days,” Roering told the Herald on Tuesday.

He added that only a political intervention with Eskom would then save the Blyvoor area from ruin. In this regard the liquidators are currently busy trying to get political role players, such as at the Merafong City Local Municipality, involved to improve the situation.

In the meantime, the liquidators are also trying to make plans to try and curb some of the environmental pollution from the mine, which is still under investigation by the Department of Environmental Affairs’ law enforcement section, the so-called ‘Green Scorpions’. In this regard the liquidators have tried to get another company to work the slimes dam nearest to the P111-road, from which most of the pollution reaching Carletonville has taken place.

Unfortunately no other company has so far shown interest in mining the uranium in this dump, which is the substance most harmful to the environment to come from it, as there is too little of this metal in the waste to make re-mine commercial.

The work of both the Consulting Auditors was concluded and work of the attorney is reaching conclusion.

It is the intention and target to submit a comprehensive report on all issues to council in this regard at the end of July.

The purpose of this report is to inform council on the progress made and to get direction from council on the way forward.

“As can be expected this report is still a highly confidential matter for reasons alluded to above. The investigation was initiated by the management of the municipality and in the period since the investigation was initiated, continuously received the attention of management.

The management of the municipality is aware that fraud and corruption is a criminal matter, and as such the files in which sufficient evidence exists to successfully prosecute will be reported to the SAPS for prosecution. Where files are only pointing out “might be” situations the municipality is of opinion that it will overburden the case load of the SAPS if these speculative situations are all individually reported, which might even affect the cases where sufficient evidence exists.

“The management, through its Risk Management and Internal Audit Teams continuously monitor transactions in the municipality specifically to identify possible fraud and corruption.

The municipality further instituted a fraud and corruption hotline, which is anonymous and members of the public can provide information about fraud and corruption in the municipality with the assurance that it will be investigated.

New friendly face at the police in Khutsong Cerise du Plooy She aspires to bring about positive change in her community.

So says Constable Ntombizonke Dyosini, the newly appointed Communications Officer of the Khutsong SAPS. This title puts Dyosini in the perfect position to bring about the kind of change she speaks of so eagerly.

“I want to give all these nyaope boys something better to occupy their minds with, in order to stop throwing their lives away with drugs,” she says.

Dyosini has lived in Khuts-

ong all her life, and although she has only served on the force since 2011, has big dreams and goals. She completed her primary and high school careers in Khutsong at Mbulelo and Badirile respectively, and matriculated in 2005. Although she cannot confirm that she always wanted to be a police officer, she does tell that she has always wanted to work with people. “Working for the police satisfies my need for interaction every day,” she says.

She has always worked with people at the Khutsong Police Station, where she helped in the CSC (Client Service Cen-

tre) and has now been appointed as the face of this station.

When she is not at work Dyosini says that she likes to spend time with her daughter, going to church and she mentions that she loves singing.

Although her family originates from the Eastern Cape, Dyosini was raised in Khutsong and grew to love the community of Khutsong. “I just want to encourage people, and especially the youth, to do well for themselves,” she concludes.

‘I am but an instrument,’ says top female paramedic Cerise du Plooy Merafong has to bid its first ever female top paramedic a sad farewell.

Melanie Kleynhans, who started serving the community of Merafong in 2002, has accepted a post as Leading

Emergency Services Officer at the WRDM (West Rand District Municipality).

When Kleynhans started working for the EMS (Emergency Medical Services) in Merafong, she had already done first aid (levels 1 - 3) through Mr and Mrs Sonja and Jurgens Bence, who own a private ambulance service in Fochville called Buddymed.

“The Bence’s passion for emergency medical rescue and services fascinated me and really got me very interested in doing the same,” Kleynhans tells. “They did everything with so much passion and drive, and in just a short space of time, became my role-models.”

In 2002 Kleynhans matriculated from Hoërskool Fochville and from there, her horizons broadened constantly and continue to do so. In 2003 she completed her BLS (Basic Life Support) through Internatio-

nal SOS as an ambulance driver. A year later, in 2004, Kleynhans completed her ILS (Intermediate Life Support) qualification through the Critiocxal Care Academy in Pretoria.

A tragic event in her life opened many doors for her. Kleynhans explains that her grandmother left her R30 000 for studies when she passed away. Kleynhans was her only grandchild who shared her name. “She died of liver cancer,” she tells sadly. “But it was with this money that I was able to pay for my first two qualifications.”

Kleynhans had still not reached the ultimate qualification as a paramedic, and went on to study toward her ALS (Advanced Life Support) qualification.

After a year’s studies in Pretoria, away from home and her daughter, she qualified in 2010 and also went on to be not only the first female ALS paramedic in Merafong, but also in the entire West Rand.

Besides being the best qualified female paramedic around, Kleynhans went on to do her Advanced Rescue Diploma. For the modules completed, she always produced excellent results and was usually the top student in her class.

When asked what her saddest call was whilst serving in Merafong, this compassionate paramedic explains that it was a head-on collision between two vehicles.

“A blonde, three-year-old little girl’s face was crushed on a rock due to her being flung from the vehicle. “The acci-

dent was caused by a drunk driver, who sustained no injuries at all,” she tells.

“The little girl was her mother’s only child and they were on their way to go buy a car seat for her.”

Her farewell message to the communities in and around Merafong is; “Nobody can escape death, and please stand together and assist one another when your fellow-residents are in need or in trouble.”

She says it gives her the greatest pleasure to see patients in town/outside the hospital who were transported to hospital by herself.

Kleynhans makes another statement - one she feels very strongly about. “I always correct people when they say that a paramedic saved their lives,” she explains. “I have never saved a life.”

“I am but an instrument, used by the hand of God to help people in emergency situations,” she explains, “The saving is all God’s work.”

“Sometimes, as a paramedic, you visit one bad, traumatising scene after the other, and its starts getting to you.

But then you help a new-born baby to see the light for their first time ever, and it makes everything worth it!

Kleynhans finished off with a message to the youth. “Never stop studying.

Realise that life can be taken from you at any moment. Do not let anyone ever deprive you of your dreams and dream big. As long as you’re always looking up and believing, you can walk with your eyes closed, because God will lead the way and straighten your path.”

Let’s talk about it - What makes life worth living Kagiso Segone This is probably one of the most tricky topics I have had to discuss and it is all about this mysterious thing that we all find ourselves in and that is “life”.

It so unpredictable and making it worth living is totally something else in reference to the economic pressure that is taking place in our communities; it is huge challenge to overcome problems like poverty, sexually transmitted diseases.

Many people are facing very depressing conditions and the country is in a state of unrest, this has lead to an increase in crime and even the number of young people committing suicides. In my own community there has been two incidents so far of young men taking their own lives and it is quite a sad case to see how people have lost hope in life.

There has to be some sort of inter-

vention in this whole fiasco in a way of implementing programmes that will help people to be more positive.

There is also a special element to this issue which is ‘spirituality’. Everyone has their own belief system and I believe that in order to have a sense of living a worthy life somehow we have to loosen ourselves from all materialistic attachments and realise that there is more to life than the things that money can buy. Life is irreplaceable and material things are always replaceable and money

can’t buy everything, I am talking about happiness, peace, freedom, patience and fulfilment. These are some of the elements that make life complete and these are also qualities that are hard to find in people and it is a sad reality. Look at the way people treat each other and the ignorance that prevails. It is this kind of behaviour that creates an unpleasant environment.

What happened to ‘’love’’ in our communities?

What happened to the spirit of ‘’ubuntu’’ and the caring natu-

re of African people? These are some questions that will never be answered, but something must be done. It is with such negative attitudes that our country was in turmoil coming from a history that we all know.

It is amazing how things have turned around from how humanity has lost touch with reality in this era of so much advanced technology and the rate at which change is taking place.

People have to go back to their roots and find themselves again; we need to restore our dignity and reclaim our loving nature.

I say good things make life worth living and it is this goal that we must strive for; let’s learn to build each other instead of always trying to prove who’s better than who and there is a greater course that we should dedicate our lives to. We all have to strive towards creating a true rainbow nation that is free from all kinds of discrimination and social prejudices.

“I want to motivate the youth and show them that it is indeed possible to make something of your life if you want it bad enough.”

After matriculating at Carleton Jones High School, Mabyane started studying IT and Business Analysis through UNISA, and continues to do so.

Onthaal met varkvleis

Wanneer jy varkvleis koop, kan jy let op die volgende: Die kleur van die vleis moet gryspienk wees. Die oppervlakte moet nie klam voel nie, maar ferm met Helene Kluge ’n syagtige voorkoms. Die vetdikte hang af van persoonlike smaak.

Hors D’Oevres Sny gaar varkvleis in dun skywe en smeer ’n mengsel van roomkaas en korrelmosterd en bietjie Tabasco oor die skywe.

Plaas aspersiepunte, stukkies piesang en agurkies of stukkies avokado op die vleis, rol op en steek met ’n stokkie vas en rangskik saam met ander versnaperinge op ’n mooi opdienskottel.

Varkfilet met hoenderlewer Sny ’n holte in 450g heel varkfilet en geur aan die binnekant met sout en swartpeper. Braai 250g hoenderlewers in olie tot net gaar maar nog pienk aan die binnekant. Vul die filet daarmee en steek die filet toe met tandestokkies.

Geur filet aan buitekant en draai toe met spekvleis. Rooster oor warm kole of op die stoof in ’n swaarboom pan.

Bedien met geroomde sampioene.

Bacon and gammon loaf Fry 1 chopped onion and some crushed garlic in olive oil. Remove from oil and set aside.

Fry 250g bacon rashers until crisp, remove and set aside. Soak 4 slices white bread (crusts removed) in 100ml milk

Sweet and sour gammon This stir-fry is quick to make and very satisfying. It is also an amazing low-cal recipe. A real bonus!

Heat some olive oil in a frying pan, add 150g carrot sticks and cook for 1 minute. Add 100g sliced mushrooms and cook for a further 1 minute. Add 350g gammon steaks, cut into strips, and 100g mangetout, topped and tailed and cook for 2 – 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Drain 1 x 420g can pineapple pieces in juice and reserve juice. Cut each slice into quarters. Place 25ml each red wine vinegar, soya sauce, honey, tomato purée and 75ml reserved juice in a bowl and mix. Mix 25ml cornflour with a little water and add to the sauce. Pour into pan with gammon and add pineapple.

Stir and bring to the boil, simmering until sauce thickens. Serve on a bed of mixed wild and long grain rice.

Choral music festival draws many solo tenor with Paulos Tshem and Bonga Skwela respectively ending second and third in this category.

Siphesihle Mkhize walked off as the best solo bass, with Thuso Lepedi coming second and Bongani Gubaza third.

In the choir category winners got R10 000, runners-up R7 000 and third place winners R5 000.

In the category for primary schools Kokosi Primary School won. The second prize went to Xhobani Primary School. Tswasongu Secondary School won the category for secondary schools.

The Chammers Male Ensemble won the male voice category with Fochville

Coral Mass coming second while the Carletonville Choral Society walked off as winners of the competition for church and community choirs.

Many local singers received the opportunity to show off their talent during a big choral music festival.

The event was held by the Merafong City Local Municipality’s Arts and Culture Department.

The “Di A Opela” choral music festival was held at the Molathlegi Hall in Kokosi on June 29. The event was a competition during which choristers from schools, churches and the community could show off their lovely voices.

It was the first time that the municipality held a programme of this magnitude. Various singers and choirs took part and had to perform a variety of demanding arias.

The solo soprano’s had to sing ‘Caro mio ben’ while the solo mezzo soprano’s or alto’s had to perform ‘Santa Lucia.’

Those taking part in the solo tenor category had to perform ‘O sole mio’ while the solo baritones had to perform the aria ‘Ombra mai fu.’

Although there were no participation in the Duet, Trio and Quartet categories, male, primary school, high school and community or church choirs were also well represented.

Sibanye Gold Shared Services launched its Winter Warmth Project 2014 early in June.

It had no sooner informed employees of the initiative when a desperate plea from a day care centre was received. Caring for the less fortunate is second nature to Shared Services employees, and it didn’t take them long to respond.

Emma Henzen runs the Little Bratz Day Care Centre from a mine house she rents in Blyvooruitzicht. The 35 children in her care, who range between the ages of eight months and six years, are the unwitting victims of the embattled Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, which declared itself bankrupt over a year ago. Their parents, all former employees, lost their jobs when the mine went into liquidation and the repercussions have had a devastating impact on the small community.

Henzen has so far managed to provide food for some of the children who would otherwise go hungry, but when the bitterly cold weather set in, she was at a loss as to how to keep the children warm.

Many of the little ones’ clothes were too small and their shoes worn out, totally inappropriate for harsh winter conditions. She approached the union Solidarity, which in turn, passed her plea for assistance on to Sibanye Gold Shared Services.

On Friday, June 13, a Shared Services delegation visited the day care centre to deliver a substantial donation of clothes and shoes that employees had collected. Each child received a blanket to ward off the cold during the long winter nights and a cupcake to satisfy the sweet tooth. Shared Services employees harbour a deep-seated spirit of giving, which is an open manifestation of Sibanye Gold’s valuesbased culture of care. Nosiphiwo Matsalo Three young learners from Hlangabeza Primary, Fihla Lonwabo (u11), Saidi Nombulelo (u11 girls) and George Bernet (u13) represented Gauteng province at the National Schools Individuals chess tournament.

This chess competition saw them compete against the best players from all over the country.

The event was held at Eunice Primary in Bloemfontein from 10 - 12 June 2014. They all also received first position at the district trials held at Phandulwazi Primary (Mohlakeng) on May 10.

They progressed to the provincial championships, held at Die Anker HS in Brakpan. They proved that they are amongst the best in Gauteng, and have medals and provincial colours to show.

They are fully aware of the tough competition that lies ahead. Hard work and willingness to be the best has pushed them thus far.

They also want to inspire others and show that even learners from township schools can compete with those from advantaged schools, and do well.

These are the humble and wise words of Carletonville’s up-and-coming sailor Ryan Robinson (17) who is heading off to Portugal to compete in the ISAF Youth World Championships this month. Robinson, together with team mate Dominic van der Walt, will be racing in the fast-flying 420 dinghy class.

The Grade 11 student from Carleton High School says, “The 420 is an amazing boat! It’s just the right pathway boat for any future sailing you could want to do. It’s able to sail in wind strengths other boats can’t handle, which makes it seriously fun.”

Robinson says the most challenging thing about sailing a 420 is its pointing ability. When you don’t have big fleets to sail in and you have to start on the same line as lasers and those types of boats, it’s a real mission to get a good start. But that’s only if you have to share a start line with other classes of boats.

Robinson, together with his family competed in the epic Cape2Rio at the beginning of the year.

“The Cape2Rio race was an amazing opportunity to get hours and hours of downwind practice which helps tremendously with my dingy sailing.

The most important aspect of dingy training would be time on the water.

You need to get almost a sixth sense feel for whichever boat you are sailing before you can race competitively,” Robinson says.

The Robinson family, one of the most successful sailing families in South Af-

rica, competed in their second Cape2Rio crossing.

A massive front hit the fleet at the beginning of the ocean crossing causing immense damage to a number of boats and resulting in one death.

“We thankfully made it through the storm unharmed. The knowledge that the storm was passing on day three would have to be one of the strongest memories I have of this year’s race.

It was great knowing that the worst was over, that we’d got through one of the most difficult challenges imaginable and...that I was not sea-sick anymore,” Robinson smiles.

The regatta is going to last for about a week and a half and that is also how long they will be in Portugal. Unfortunately their funds will not allow them to spend some extra time in Europe to do some warm-up regattas, so they lose the advantage of big fleet racing, which they will have to make up for with inten-

Having only competed together in one international regatta in the 420 class, Robinson said, “Dom and I have been sailing together for two years now.

At first, communication was a problem but we worked through that and are sailing well together at this stage.”

“We are hoping to build on our experience from last year’s Youth Worlds.

I wouldn’t like to pick a goal such as a medal, mainly because I perform poor under pressure. So we are just going there with the mind-set of doing our best.”

The duo set off to Portugal, waving the flag for the Royal Natal Yacht Club, as they prepare to compete against the best young up-and-coming international sailors at the ISAF World Champ from July 12 to 19.
