Praim Persaud: GT20 Canada 2019’s City of Brampton Move Coordinator-Conductor! GT20 Canada’s move from the Inaugural Season King City venue to its now hopefully permanent home in the Flower City of Brampton, was a direct outcome of a conversation between Cricket Canada’s President Ranjit Saini and Cricket Ontario’s Praim Persaud. Saini had expressed to Persaud his desire for the Tournament to be staged at a more centrally located venue. As President of the Brampton-Etobicoke&District Cricket League (BEDCL) Persaud reflects that the timing of Saini’s suggestion could not have been more perfect. The City’s Mayoral Nominee, Patrick Brown was at that very said time engaged in his election campaign with cricket as one of the main platforms. Brown’s opponent, the incumbent Mayor Linda Jeffries, had effectively stiffened the wonderful progress that had been made at Brampton City Council, by her predecessor Susan Fennel, towards cricket’s infrastructural development in recognition of the significance of the sport to hundreds of thousands of its residents. Persaud who doesn’t usually support politicians met with Brown to outline the requirements of his League. He says he was pleasantly surprised by the mayoral candidate’s presentation of an additional elongated list of cricket related promises that would be fulfilled should he be elected. On the basis of Brown’s promises the support of the BEDCL’s one hundred and fifty plus affiliated clubs and their respective members was galvanized towards his eventual election victory. To date as Mayor, Patrick Brown has more than fulfilled all the promises he made in addition to honoring the requests that Persaud had put forward. Brown had in fact already begun using cricket including the possibility of GT20 Canada being hosted by Brampton as an election platform.

WICKETS

After Brown had been elected Persaud introduced him to Cricket Canada’s President Ranjit Saini at last year’s BEDCL’s Annual Awards Gala with the intention of leaving up to them to work out the details. For whatever reason however, nothing much happened subsequent to that introduction. Persaud who in the interim had been appointed by Brown to be Brampton City’s Special Advisor on Cricket, later found out that the GT20 Owners had been otherwise directed to approach the City of Mississauga with regards to the hosting of this year’s Tournament.

6

Those negotiations eventually collapsed resulting in the GT20 Owners turning their attention to Brampton as an alternative. They met with Mayor Brown and presented their proposals for the Tournament to be staged at the CAA Center. As fate would have it the CAA Center’s three existing pitches had all been developed solely by the BEDCL under Persuad’s Presidential direction. Knowing this Mayor Brown advised the GT20 Representatives that the City would only be willing to proceed on the condition that Praim Persaud would be fully involved in all subsequent discussions and decisions as one of the City’s Official Representatives. Persaud then met with GT20’s Tournament Director Jason Harper and Advisory Board Member, Cosmos Sports President

Cary Kaplan, to discuss the possibilities. Persaud had initially expressed his disagreement with the choice of the CAA Centre as the preferred venue. He felt and still does that there were other far more suitable choices available within the League’s now ultra impressive inventory of top class cricket grounds! Several rounds of three way discussions between, the City of Brampton, GT20 Canada officials and the CAA Center owners were briefly interrupted by an expression of further interest from the City of Mississauga. That however died almost as quickly as it had been revived, paving the way for plans to proceed full blast towards Brampton’s hosting of this year’s GT20 Tournament. The development and implementation of those plans were pursued through multiple conference calls, involving the representatives of the aforementioned three key parties. Eventually the deal was struck and signed and on June 3, the City of Brampton’s hosting of GT20 Canada 2019 was officially announced at a Media Conference that was hosted by the Mayor and held at City Hall. Ironically Persaud who was an integral part of the group that had essentially engineered this wonderful development was not around for the grand announcement at the Mayor’s Media Conference. He had traveled overseas in fulfillment of a previously made business commitment. His involvement was however glowing acknowledged by both Mayor Patrick Brown on behalf of the City and also by Jason Harper as Gt20 Tournament Director. During his address at the Press Conference, Mayor Patrick Brown also announced his City’s plans to develop additional cricket facilities within the City later this year and continuing over the next two years. Such plans would include the establishment of two additional facilities as well as the installation of lights at one of the City’s grounds. Mayor Brown also indicated that his Brampton City Council had embarked upon the development of plans for the establishment of a major cricket stadium as a future-hosting venue for international matches and Tournaments. Mayor Brown’s announced plans are the direct result of the dedicated efforts that Praim Persaud and his BEDCL Board members have been making for almost twenty years. In the years prior to 2004, Brampton

It was Garnet Manny who had summoned a meeting between the Mayor, other City Council officials and the representatives of the then twelve Brampton based clubs to discuss the City’s cricketing needs and to formulate plans as to how they should be addressed. The clubs unanimously elected Praim Persaud to speak on their combined behalf.

As the City of Brampton’s Mayor, Patrick Brown’s recognition of the significance of cricket to hundreds of thousands of his constituents has been reflected in City Council’s allocation of a specific budget for the sport. Working with City officials Praim Persaud and his fellow BEDCL officials have developed an extensive listing of the City requirements for ongoing cricket development. The installation of turf wickets and proper sightscreens, along with the grass being cut to a half-inch level, which required the City’s procurement of the proper cutting and rolling machines as well as the required natural turf preparation and maintenance machinery, an ongoing battle that Praim and his colleagues had been waging for almost thirty years, were among the primary requests on the list. It is that exact listing that has served as the foundation for the City’s allocation of budget funding for cricket.

From that point onwards and with Mayor Susan Fennel’s complete approval, blessings and support, Praim worked diligently with City officials including Don Doan (Director of Parks & Recreation) to identify and secure locations for the establishment of additional cricket grounds. Under Praim’s guidance the two then existing organizations, the Etobicoke & District Cricket League and the Brampton Cricket Association were also merged into a single entity: Brampton-Etobicoke & District Cricket League – at the request of the City.

The list of requirements Mayor Patrick Brown and his Brampton City Council have agreed includes the previously mentioned addition of two new cricket grounds as well as the establishment of a cricket stadium. A previous blueprint for the stadium’s development had been formulated in 2015 under Mayor Susan Fennel’s tenure and enabled by Persaud’s direct involvement with the City’s architect. That blueprint had been formulated largely on the basis of extensive research Persaud had conducted on the construction of similar facilities in Antigua, St Lucia and other parts of the Caribbean.

That merger was both a reflection of Praim and his associates recognition that continuing City support would be dependent upon demonstrated growth of cricket as a participation support, as well as the actual almost geometric increases in the number of clubs that had been occurring. Within a few years prior to the merger, the Brampton Cricket Association from an initial mere handful of clubs to well in excess of one hundred.

Former Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell had initially authorized the stadium development plans in support of cricket’s application to become an Olympic support and towards the City’s positioning of itself as a potential future-hosting venue. Once cricket’s Olympic application had fallen through. Mayor Fennel remained committed to the cricket stadium development initiative until she was unfortunately defeated in the subsequent election.

During the years of Susan Fennel’s Brampton City Mayoral tenure, the BEDCL acquired and developed cricketing facilities from an initial inventory of three grounds to the sixteen that now exist today. Working with Brampton City and Parks Officials Persaud and his BEDCL Board also embarked upon initiatives to constantly improve playing conditions of existing and newly required grounds. Under Praim Persaud’s leadership, BEDCL was also at the forefront of the eventual reunification of all the other Ontario based Leagues, which had gone their separate ways as a result of the demise of the Ontario Cricket Association. Persaud was again the main architect behind the reunification of the wandering Leagues under a newly constituted Cricket Council of Ontario, which was eventually incorporated as Cricket Ontario.

Praim Persaud’s possession of copies of those blueprints as well as their acknowledge existence within the confines of Brampton City Hall is the backdrop to Mayor Patrick Brown’s recent announcement that the initiative has now been resuscitated and will henceforth be arduously pursued. In the interim Praim is now deliriously happy that for this year’s cricket season, despite all the pre-season rains all the grass on all City grounds was cut to an acceptable three quarter inch length and which has now been dropped to the desired 1.2 inch. The City of Brampton’s establishment of top class turf pitch equipped grounds with their immaculately the half inch grassed outfields has resulted in an uplifting of the standard of cricket being played by the members of the BEDCL’s now one hundred & fifty plus clubs. Although that has not as yet been reflected by the selection of BEDCL players to representative Canadian teams, Praim Persaud feels that it is now only a matter of time before this becomes a reality. Certainly with the CAA Center having been established as the venue for the City of Brampton’s hosting of GT20 Canada 2019 and with all other wonderful initiatives that have taken place the future does indeed look bright for cricket’s further development in the City. Who knows as Cricket Canada President Ranjit Saini had suggested at the June 3 Press Conference there’s even now the distinct possibility for the City of Brampton to become the Official Home of Canadian Cricket. If and when that does happen there’s every likelihood that will be as a result of Praim Persaud and his BEDCL Board’s involvement!

WICKETS

City Council was being approached by individual clubs with their respective requests for grounds and improved playing facilities, with little progress being made. Susan Fennel’s 2004 election as Brampton City Mayor and the presence of a cricket oriented Council Member Garnet Manny, however completely changed the environment within City Hall from its previous state of almost total disinterest to that of being encouragingly supportive.

A KIWI, A SAFFIE AND AN AUSSIE TO CARRY EDMONTON ROYALS BANNERS AS MARQUEE PLAYERS! The Edmonton Royals have selected New Zealand and South African captains Kane Williamson and Faf du Plessis, along with Australia’s very useful all-rounder Ben Cutting, as marquee players for this year’s GT20 Canada 2019. Both Williamson and Du Plessis will be fresh from direct respective recently concluded ICC 2019 World Cup campaigns.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad signed Williamson on 6 February 2015. He played a major role in the Sunrisers winning the 2016 season title and was retained for 2017.

Kane Williamson

Faf du Plessis

BAs New Zealand’s captain, Kane Williamson has continued to reinforce his already well established reputation as one of international cricket’s top three batsmen, India’s Virat Kholi and England’s Joe Root being indisputably the other two. Williamson led his Kiwis all the day to the final with his outstanding batting, which yielded 548 runs, including two centuries, at an average of 91.33.

WICKETS

As a right-handed batsman and an occasional off spin bowler, Williamson also captains the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. Williamson plays for Northern Districts in domestic cricket in New Zealand and has played for both Gloucestershire and Yorkshire in English county cricket.

Trinidadian born Kieron Adrian Pollard (born 12 May 1987) plays for South Africa captain and fantastic batsman Faf du Plessis ended his 2019 ICC World Cup campaign with a century against arch rivals Australia. A right-handed middle order batsman and part-time leg spin bowler, du Plessis has played South African domestic cricket for Northerns and

the Titans, as well as matches for Lancashire, the Chennai Super Kings, the Rising Pune Supergiants and the Melbourne Renegades. Du Plessis was on a 6-month contract with Lancashire for the 2008 season starting in April as a Kolpak player after impressing the board with good performances in the local Nottinghamshire leagues for Mansfield Hosiery Mills and in the Lancashire League for Todmorden. Following his six-month stint with Lancashire, du Plessis signed a new three-year deal with the club. Lancashire coach Mike Watkinson praised du Plessis’ fielding, saying “if there’s a better fielder in county cricket I’ve not seen him this season”.

In March 2010, it was announced that du Plessis would no longer be allowed to play for Lancashire as a Kolpak player after changes to the Kolpak rules. In 2011, he was signed by the 2010 IPL Champions Chennai Super Kings at the Indian Premier League player auction. Du Plessis had a very successful season with the Chennai Super Kings scoring 398 runs in IPL 2012. In June 2019, he was selected to play for the Edmonton Royals franchise team in the 2019 Global T20 Canada Tournament.

Ben Cutting

A fast bowler and productive lower-order batsman, Ben Cutting was on the verge of Test selection in 2011-12 when he was named in Australia’s squad during their home series against New Zealand. But instead of winning a baggy green, he had to settle for experience around the squad, and the following summer made his debut in ODIs and T20 internationals against Sri Lanka. Capable of creating steepling bounce from his 1.92m height, Cutting owns two types of bouncer, including a very fast one which often surprises the batsmen. His standout summer was 2009-10 when he topped the Sheffield Shield wicket tally with 46 at 23.91, and he was again near the top of the list in 2011-12. Although he has struggled to hit those heights again, Cutting remains a valuable all-round performer

The Montreal Tigers selection of Nikhil Dutta, Dillon Heyliger, Arslan Khan, Bhupinder Singh and Yax Patel as the Franchise’s Canadians for this year’s GT20 Canada Tournament is an interesting mix of experience and youth. The Tigers will be hoping that the Canadians make full use of their provided playing opportunities with inspired performances to help improve on its bottom of the table record at the end of the 2018 Inaugural GT20 Season.

Nikhil Dutta Kuwait born Nikhil Dutta (born 13 October 1994) is a right-handed batsman who also bowls right-arm off spin. Yax Patel Yax Patel received his initial exposure to GT20 Canada as a net bowler for both the Montreal Tigers and the Edmonton Royals. The left arm spinner impressed renowned Coach Tom Moody with his impressive demonstrated skills in capturing several wickets including those of Andre Fletcher. Luke Ronchi and Sunil Narine.

Arslan Khan Born April 16 1999 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada’s Arslan Sher Khan has made an impressive rise up the batting rankings in both Canadian Youth Cricket and the ICC U19 World Cup levels within the past 5 years. Until he turned 20 in April of this year, he was ranked as one of Canada’s top U19 players. In fact, with 427 runs in 12 innings with an average of 47.23, Arslan Khan still holds the record as Canada’s highest ever run scorer in U19 World Cup history.

Patel views himself as an all-rounder, capable of holding his own as a middle-order batsman and more than worth his weight as a left–arm spinner who includes the chinaman in his repertoire. He is also reputed to be an excellent fielder. Patel started playing his cricket when he was just 10 years old. He played u-12 domestic cricket in India, then moved to Canada at the age of 14 and started playing local tournaments from that point onwards. Yax Patel currently resides in Edmonton and plays his domestic cricket in the Alberta Cricket Leagues.

MONTREAL TIGERS HOPING FOR OUTSTANDING MARQUEE PLAYER PERFORMANCES As the Montreal Tigers’ chosend marquee players for the 2019 GT20 Canada second season, much will be expected from former Australian captain and batsman George Bailey West Indies mystery spinner Sunil Narine, and Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera. The Tigers hopes will be for these three to provide consistently outstanding performances with bat and ball as an inspiration to the other less famous members of the franchise’s roster.

George Bailey

WICKETS

George Bailey had been on the Australian domestic cricket scene for a decade when he made his international debut in early 2012, yet few men have had such a meteoric rise. If that seems a contradiction, consider that Bailey went from uncapped to captain with nothing in between. Australia were searching for a new leader of their Twenty20 side and the

22

Tasmanian Bailey was one of the most respected state skippers, and was thrust into the role to replace Cameron White. It made him the first man since Dave Gregory in the first Test match in 1877 to be named captain in his debut for Australia in any format. Over the next couple of years Bailey worked his way into Australia’s team in all three forms of the game, and was part of the unchanged XI that delivered an Ashes whitewash in 2013-14. However, while he made contributions in the Test team and T20 side, it was as an ODI batsman that Bailey shone brightest. A destructive striker capable of changing a match within a few overs, Bailey enjoyed an especially prolific ODI year in 2013 and at his peak was ranked the No.2 ODI batsman in the world. One of the most respected men in Australian cricket, Bailey was viewed as a mature and adaptable captain. He led Australia in two World T20 campaigns before resigning the T20 captaincy in 2014 to focus on ODIs and playing more first-class cricket. Sunil Narine, a mystery spinner, caught the West Indies selectors’ attention by taking all ten wickets in a trial match and received a call up to the Trinidad & Tobago squad in January 2009. He may not have accomplished that in international cricket , but every time Narine came to bowl, he looked like taking a wicket. His bag of tricks - an assortment of carrom balls, knuckle balls and skidders - led West Indies to the World T20 title in 2012 - the first time they claimed a World trophy since 1979. Narine ran into serious trouble with his bowling action in the Champions League Twenty20 2014. He had to rework it once before too, in 2011, with the help of biomechanical experts at the University of Western Australia in Perth, prior to making his ODI debut in India. During the 2018 Indian Premier League he became the most valuable player, this was his second MVP award, after his debut season in 2012 Indian Premier League. In October 2018, he was named in the squad for the Dhaka Dynamites team, following the draft for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. In March 2019, Narine played in his 100th match in the IPL. In May 2018, he was named as one of the ten marquee players for the first edition of the Global T20 Canada cricket tournament. On 3 June 2018, he was selected to play for the Montreal Tigers in the players’ draft for the inaugural edition of the tournament. Bowling is ostensibly Perera’s major skill but, often deployed in the lower-middle order, he is also capable of delivering furious finishes to an innings. Perera is particularly severe on spin, which has led to his being used as a pinch-hitter through the middle overs, but he has at times also been weak to quality pace bowling. He is the kind of player for whom form in one discipline usually bleeds into the other. Perera has also done well with bat and ball on previous tours to Australia, and has often been at his best against India, memorably slamming the straight six that completed Sri Lanka’s World T20 triumph in 2014. His more recent years have been beset by inconsistency but Perera continues to command a place in the side. He has hat-tricks in both ODIs and T20s. Perera was a part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. On 12 February 2016, Perera joined Brett Lee to take hat-tricks in both ODI & T20. He has played the most number of T20I innings(45) for Sri Lanka without scoring a T20I fifty and also holds the record for scoring most number of T20I runs for Sri Lanka without hitting any fifties. He also has the record for the highest individual score for Sri Lanka when batting at number 7 position or lower in Twenty20 International (49) and also jointly holds the record for Sri Lanka for the highest score batting at number 8 position in T20I along with Angelo Mathews(35*) In August 2017, he was named in a World XI side to play three Twenty20 International matches against Pakistan in the 2017 Independence Cup in Lahore. In the second T20I of the series, Perera took 2 wickets and scored an unbeaten 19-ball 47 runs to lift the World XI to win by 7 wickets. The score highlighted by five huge sixes and Perera won the man of the match award for his match winning all-round performances. In April 2018, he was named in the Rest of the World XI squad for the oneoff T20I against the West Indies, to be played at Lord’s on 31 May 2018. He had a much better season compared to the first one, as he scored runs in crucial matches and ended the season as third highest-runs scorer for his side, scoring 202 runs in 10 innings. During the PSL’s third season, Malik joined new PSL franchise Multan Sultans as their captain. He led his team from the front with the bat, scoring 224 runs across 8 innings with a strike rate of 124.44. As a result of the termination of the Multan Sultans franchise before the fourth season of the PSL due to fee-payment issues, the PCB created a new team up for bidding, temporarily named as The Sixth Team, of which Malik is expected to be assigned the role of captain.

Winnipeg Hawks Retain Dwayne

Bravo, JP Duminy and Chris Lynn As Marquee Players The Winnipeg Hawks have retained West Indies’ all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, South Africa’s JP Duminy and Australia’s Chris Lynn as marquee players for the GT20 Canada 2019 Tournament. The trio will be expected to lead the Hawks to a much improved showing than was experienced last Season, during which they only recorded two wins.

Dwayne Bravo, West Indies

A street-smart cricketer with both bat and ball, Bravo was also an astonishing fielder. All these meant that he was one of the best sought-after names in T20 Leagues. He was made for white-ball cricket due to his versatile skills. Bravo could bowl as a conventional seam bowler but particularly excels in the slog overs of the innings where was priceless for his side. It was the IPL that established the brand of Bravo in the T20 format. After a moderate start in the tournament with Mumbai, the shift to Chennai did the trick for the all-rounder. He went on to become one of the main faces of the franchise along with skipper MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. His persona

matched the franchise’s fan base and he was one of the vital cogs of Chennai’s success. The fame saw him getting massive offers from the other leagues as well and he soon became a sensation in the format, often being among the most sought after names at the player auctions. Duminy has played in a lot of franchise T20 Leagues across the globe and is a valuable asset to any team he plays in. Impressed by his batting and fielding skills, the Australian selectors presented him with the Australia cap for the home T20I series against England in January 2014. Australia’s Chris Lynn is a well-built, hard-hitting right-hander from Queensland and one of the most accomplished batsmen in the Australian domestic circuit.
