The globally admired Universe Boss: Chris Gayle has just recently announced his impending retirement from all forms of international cricket after the forthcoming West Indies- India Series. As part of the announcement, Gayle also indicated that he would not be participating in any of the T20 matches that will constitute that Series.

Gayle’s participation in this year’s GT20 Canada 2019 Tournament as Captain of the defending champions, the Vancouver Knights, has however already been previously confirmed. As such the implications are that this year’s second edition of the City of Brampton hosted GT20 Canada Tournament will now be the Universe Boss’ farewell T20 appearance!

In addition to Gayle, as defending Champions the Vancouver Knights will have within their ranks the Universe Boss’ fellow West Indian and Jamaican country man Andre Russell. Superman Dre Russ as he’s known, emerged as the Best Batsman “ Purple Cap” winner for the recently concluded 2019 Indian Premier League. Former Pakistan Captain Shoaib Malik will also be a part of the Vancouver Knights GT20 Canada 2019 lineup. Malik’s T20 exploits are well documented. He led Pakistan to the finale in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and was a key member of their 2009 triumph as World Champions in England.

GT20 Canada 2019 will also be graced by the debut appearance of the Tournament’s newest franchise, the Brampton Wolves. The Wolves will be skippered by the legendary, former West Indies captain and two-time ICC T20 World Cup winner, Darren Sammy. Pakistan’s’ legendary Sahid ‘Boom Boom” Afridi, universally acknowledged as one of the most enigmatic all-rounders the global T20’s circuit has ever witnessed, will also be a part of the Brampton Wolves’ quest for GT20 Canada debut Season honors.

Sunil Narine’s legendary exploits as one of the very best spinners ever seen in T20 matches has long since been indisputably established. Within the past few years, Williamson’s reputation as a batsman of the highest quality has been rivaled only by those of India’s Virat Kholi and England’s Joe Root. Having mounted an admirably strong challenge to the Vancouver Knights eventual Championship triumph during last year’s Gt20 Canada Tournament, the Toronto Royals will be hoping to do even better this year by going all the way. Their chances of achieving that lofty ambition will be bolstered by their roster inclusion of not one, two or even three legendary T20 exponents, but actually four. The legendary exploits of New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum as an explosive, belligerent batsman and Trent Boult as one of crickets finest pace bowlers are undisputed. So too are the T20 reputations of West Indies Kieron Pollard and India’s Yuvraj Singh. All four will be among the Toronto Royals ranks for this year’s GT20 Canada Tournament. Finally rounding out the competing 2019 GT20 Franchises with legends within their respective ranks will be the Winnipeg Hawks. Having under performed during last year’s Tournament, the Hawks will be hoping for an extended stay and outstanding lead from the front performances from their own T20 legend, the indomitable West Indian DJ Bravo. With so many established world-renowned T20 greats set to make their appearances, this year’s 2019 GT20 Canada does indeed promise to be a Tournament of Legends!

Harsh Thaker Seeking GT20 Canada 2019 Glory! At his now tender age of 21, Canadian Harsh Thaker’s foremost cricketing ambition is about to come through. Having set himself the goal of becoming a professional cricketer, Harsh must have been overjoyed to have his name announced as one of the recently selected Vancouver Knights draft picks for this year’s 2019 second edition of the annual Global T20 Canada Tournament. This year’s Tournament gets under way on July 25 in Brampton, Ontario, Six Franchise teams, Edmonton Royals, Montreal Tigers, Toronto Nationals, defending champs Vancouver Knights, Winnipeg Hawks and newcomers Brampton Wolves will be competing for Tournament honors. Born 24 October 1997) Harsh Thaker made his List A debut for Canada in the 2018–19 Cricket West Indies Caribbean Regional Super50 tournament on 3 October 2018. Prior to his List A debut, he was named in Canada’s squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Thaker’s rise through the Canadian ranks to secure his A Team position was fashioned on his consistently outstanding performances at the national U19 Level. During the 2015 ICC U19 America’s Division 1 Tournament Thaker picked up two Man of the Match awards. He was also awarded the Batsman of the Tournament honors and named the overall MVP for his outstanding achievements. Thaker scored 261 runs from his 4 innings, with a top score of 121 and an average of 65.23. With the ball, Thaker took 5 wickets, including best figures of 3-38. Now that his professional cricket dreams have been realized with his having been drafted to the Vancouver Royals, Thaker will undoubtedly be hoping to make a name for himself in this year’s GT20 Canada Tournament. In doing so he will definitely benefit from the wonderful opportunity he has been granted to play represent the Tournament’s defending champions and in so doing play alongside the likes of such established world greats as the Universe Boss, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Shoaib Malik. As a right-hand middle order batsman and more than useful right-arm off-spinner Harsh Thaker has to date played 5 List A matches in Canadian colors. His five matches have yielded an aggregate of 114 runs at an average of 28.50. To date he has scored one fifty, 52 not out scored for Canada against the West Indies B last October having been his highest score to date.

Simmons’ batting firepower may well be matched by that of his fellow West Indian, Andre Fletcher. Representing the Edmonton Royals in 2018, Fletcher scored an impressive 169 runs in total from 5 innings at a healthy average of 42.25. Fletcher’s average 2018 strike rate was 137.4 Canadian national senior team player Nitish Kumar will also be among those seeking to leave his mark for the Brampton Wolves in this year’s GT20 Tournament. Kumar was one of Canada’s outstanding players during the ICC World Cup Division 2 Qualifier Tournament that was held in Namibia earlier this year.

Brampton Wolves Boasts Ultra Impressive Lineup For GT20 Canada Season Debut!

Brampton Wolves seem destined for an ultra exciting GT20 Canada debut. West Indies ICC T20 World Cup two time winning captain Darren Sammy heads the list of the Brampton Wolves formidable lineup. He will be joined by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan who is currently on track to finishing this year’s ICC 2019 World Cup as one of that Tournament’s highest scorers. New Zealand’s belligerent batsman Colin Munro, Boom Boom Sahid Afridi and his former Pakistani teammate Wahab Riaz are also included in the Brampton Wolves 2019 GT20 Canada roster. So too is West Indies’ Lendl Simmons, the GT20 2018 Inaugural Season’s top run getter. Playing for the Winnipeg Hawks, Simmons finished the 2018 GT20 Canada Season with a Tournament high 312 runs at an impressive 45.86 average and at a healthy 140.79 strike rate.

The presence of Singh, McCullum and Pollard will undoubtedly bolster the Nationals batting efforts. Their respective outstanding performances as international T20 batters has been well recorded. Such was Yuvraj’s ability with the bat that he was well ahead

One of the most sought after players in the shortest form of the game, Pollard has also plied his trade for Somerset, Dhaka Gladiators and Barbados Tridents.

The combined presence of Singh. McCullum and Pollard should produce a marked improvement on the Nationals 2018 batting which was highlighted by Anton Devcich’s 204 Runs Avg 40.80 SR 147.8 and Steven Smith’s 140 runs Avg 33.40 SR 119.29 The Nationals will also be hoping for New Zealand’s Trent Boult, supported perhaps by the Canadians Jeremy Gordon and Rodrigo Thomas, to lead a much improved bowling performance. During 2018 the Nationals had the unenviable record of having taken the least amount of wickets among all competing Franchises. The West Indians Kieron Pollard, 5 wickets at a 25.6 average and Kesrick Williams 4 wickets, average 47.75 were the Nationals best bowlers in 2018.

Three of the international cricket’s most exciting and accomplished T20 stars, India’s Yuvraj Singh, New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum and West Indies’ Kieron Pollard will be at the helm of the Toronto Nationals’ ‘quest for much improved performances during this year’s GT20 Canada 2019 Tournament. Not unlike their Edmonton Hawks and Montreal Tigers fellow competitors, the Toronto Nationals also finished with an unimpressive played 6, won 2, lost 4 at the end of last year’s GT20 Canada Tournament.

As he winds down his international T20 career, the self declared Universe Chris Gayle will also likely be targeting an outstanding 2019 Tournament to add individual GT20 honors to his unrivalled resume!

With all three of their outstanding 2018 batters Rassie Van Der Dussen, Andre Russell and Chadwick Walton again within their ranks and led by the indomitable Universe Boss Chris Gayle, the defending Gt20 Canada 2018 Champions, Vancouver Knights will be hoping to repeat their winning ways at this year’s Tournament. The Knights chances of doing so will also be bolstered by the inclusion of Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik and New Zealand’s Tim Southee. The Knights’ 2019 roster will also include the exciting Pakistan born US based quickie Ali Khan, as well as the Canadians Rizwan Cheema, Harsh Thaker, young Matthew Nandu and

last year’s Man of the Match winner for the Final Saad Bin Zafar. During last year’s 2018 Season, the Vancouver Knights compiled an impressive aggregate of 1,349 runs scored in the 9 matches they played. Van Der Dussen, 255 runs at a 51.00 average and 118.06 SR was the Knights highest scoring batsman. He was ably supported by Andre Russell, 185 runs; Avg 185; SR 215.65 and Chadwick Walton 183 runs; Avg. 26.14; SR 154.41 The Knights also enjoyed an outstanding 2018 Season

GT20 Canada Defending Champions Vancouver Knights Seeking To Repeat In 2019

Chris Lynn, Dwayne Bravo, JP Duminy Headline Winnipeg Hawks’ 2019 GT20 Canada Glory Quest! Played 8 won 4, lost 4! Not exactly the kind of performance record that would drive much fear into the minds of any opponents. But with seasoned T20 professionals such as Lynn, Bravo and Duminy among their ranks for this year’s GT20 Canada Tournament, the Winnipeg Hawks will feel that their chances for success are as good as any. As they engage in their pursuit of GT20 Canada 2019 Tournament honors, the Winnipeg Hawks will be, unfortu-

nately, entertaining the disadvantage of not having any of their outstanding 2018 performers back within their ranks this year. Lendl Simmons, who scored 312 runs at an impressive 45.86 average and at a healthy 140.79 strike rate, will be absent. So too will Ben McDermott, 224 runs, 37.33 avg, 130.23 strike rate and Mark Deyal: 160 runs, 40 avg, 160 strike rate.

Bravo, Lynn, Duminy, along with experienced trio of Umar Akmal, Rayad Emrit and Dwayne Smith should however provide the Hawks with sufficient talent to significantly improve on their rather modest 4 wins, 4 losses 2019 performance record. Towards that end the exciting Canadian pacer Romesh Eranga may also prove to be an outstanding acquired player asset for the Winnipeg Hawks.

The Hawks’ bowling will also be similarly depleted by the absence of the pacy Fidel Edwards whose 11 w last Season wickets were captured at a stingy 14.27 average. Muhammad Ali Khan, the Hawks second highest wicket-taker in 2018, will also be missing. His 2018 tally was 10 wickets at a 24.25 average.

Cricket Canada has announced the Canadian National U19 Squad to participate at the 2019, ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020 Americas Qualifier Tournament to be held at King City from July 6th – 15th. This is the second consecutive year that Canada will be hosting the Tournament, the winner of which will go on to represent the Americas Region at the South Africa hosted 2020 ICC U19 World Cup. Canada will be competing against rival U19 teams from the Argentina, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the USA for Tournament winner honours. The selected Canadian Squad is as follows:

Members of The Board of Cricket West Indies (CWI) gathered for their quarterly series of meetings at the Sandals Grande Resort in Antigua, on June 8 and 8th. At the two-day Directors’ Meeting, the following reports were received and decisions made:

Vice President Dr. Kishore Shallow reported on his trip to Ireland as guest of the Tri-Series organizer where he engaged with Irish cricket officials, and the West Indies Team Management, Captain, and players. He expressed pleasure at his visit to Cricket Ireland’s High Performance Centre which he felt was employing some useful best practices for possible adoption here. The Vice President also updated the Directors on progress made at two meetings already held by the Team Selection System Review Task Force.

The Director of Cricket expressed satisfaction with the impact of the three-week High Performance Camp for outstanding young players. President Skerritt reiterated the new Board’s policy of giving greater priority to, and increasing investment in cricket development. He expressed pleasure in his recent visit to the camp and his interactions with the youngsters.

An update was given by Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams, and CEO Johnny Grave, on various matters related to the preparation and operation of Team West Indies, including the pre World Cup tour to Ireland to participate in an ODI Tri-Series with Bangladesh and Ireland. Directors expressed overall pleasure at how the team and its management had been working together and performing. President Skerritt expressed pleasure in receiving positive feedback from numerous and varied stakeholders about the apparent commitment and aggressive style of play of our players. He said that fans and past players alike were relieved to see the team name had been rebranded as “West Indies”.

Other board committees were also approved and an announcement will be made to the media.

Upcoming India Tour

The Board also received an update on the revised strategic plan, negotiations with WIPA, a draft MOU with professional franchise teams, and the hosting of a proposed Global Cricket Conference which it is hoped will become an annual event.

Annual West Indies U19 Tournament This year’s tournament has greater significance as it is will be used to select the squad for the ICC U-19 World Cup to be played in South Africa in January 2020. The tournament will only feature 50-over cricket and in addition to the six matches to be played, the top 24 “future stars” will play an additional three 50over games, “The Best vs The Best”, which will assist the selectors in naming the World Cup squad. Due to the importance of the tournament together with the continued legal uncertainty with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Directors approved the proposal for this year’s event to be hosted in St Vincent and the Grenadines, and to postpone the previously agreed hosting by Guyana, to 2020.

The Guyana Situation The President and CEO reported on their visit to Guyana, during which they met with various stakeholder groups, including the Government. The Board also received an update on the status of various legal matters concerning the Guyana Cricket Board.

Commercial Director Dominic Warne updated the Board on efforts to implement the new policy of rebranding and uplifting public awareness of the youth tournaments, and to seek major sponsorship in order to achieve greater investment and sustainability.

The game was really a Demerara-centered game and the Walcott cricket program for sugar estates supported by Robert Christiani, ensured conditions for cricket in those areas became much better. Swanton team toured British Guiana with a number of international stars. Tours also came from Pakistan with the Pakistan International Airlines team and the Hyderbad Blues being among the first. Another plus for the game was the Indian Cricket Association of Trinidad that sent strong delegations to British Guiana and elevated the standard of club cricket.
