Message from the Dean

It is a pleasure for the Albert Laurence School of Communication Arts to host

the 2nd CA Faculty Show. This year, the venue for the exhibition has moved from on campus to a public venue at Case Space Revolution, 2nd Floor of Broccoli Revolution, Sukhumvit 49. The creative work showcase has gained more attention and interest from our faculty, thus increasing the number of participants for this year show.

The 2016 faculty showcase is under the theme “Sufficiency”, which reflects the

philosophy given to our nation by his late Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The works are the result of different perspectives of our faculty members that convey personal viewpoints and artistic sensibility toward such an idea.

It has always been our intention to use this event as a bridge to connect our stu-

dents’ understanding with better insight to the work, attitude and personality of their lecturers. In addition, we also hope to attain more public exposure from this new location.

The faculty of Albert Laurence School of Communication Arts would like to thank

umngarm, Asst. Prof. Puvanai Dardarananda, Asst. Prof. Arwin Intrungsi, Asst. Prof. Dr. Parida manomaiphiboon to help improve our quality of work as well as approve our academic standard. I also want to show my appreciation to Asst. Prof. Nattanan Naewmalee for organizing and curating this exhibition.

Background or Significance of the project Under the philosophical statement of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej regarding the “Sufficiency Economy” which is a philosophy based on the fundamental principle of Thai culture. It is a method of development based on moderation, prudence and social immunity, one that uses knowledge and virtue as guidelines in living (and working). Significantly, there must be intelligence and perseverance which will lead to real happiness in leading one’s life.

Sufficiency VS Insufficiency Adopting these core messages of “Sufficiency” to design and decide the direction of creative performance production has led the researcher to focus on the “Insufficiency” in the story of Nak Phra Khanong that led to the tragic end. Since June 2014, the researcher along with a group of performance communication students working closely with a production designer, a lighting designer, a projectionist, and sound designers to create a series of creative performances named “Mak, -12

Nak and People of Phra Khanong” and “JUST Dance: the Dance for Justice” to investigate other aspects in Mae Nak story and to explore the political conflicts of individual VS community . The drive and need of Nak as a protagonist was fighting against the drive and need of society. Drawing and extracting from previous two productions revolving around Mae Nak Phra Khanong legendary, the sequel of “Land and Skin (The Ballad of Nak Phra Khanong)” aims to bring the audiences to experience the unrest soul of Nak and to move beyond the spectacles of either stage or dance performance. Travelling through Phra Khanong space and time in 1848, the audiences will be experiencing the moments of Nak’s transformation during her final stage of delivery and Nak’s transmogrification when she found out about human-ghost frontier. The 40-minute physical performance will utilize the essence of body movements and choreographic language to explore human and non-human postures as well as to interact with design elements on stage.

1. Since the original image files were shot in color mode, when using Black and

White conversion with default setting, many images have problems with undesirable tonality. They will need to use custom color adjustment to alter tonality for the better result. The main subjects can be more dominant and separate from the background. For some pictures with color cast problem, it will be easier to correct the color cast probelm before the black and white conversion process.

2 Distraction can be eliminated or reduced when converting color image to black

and white.

3. After the black and white conversion, Layer Adjustment Level or Curve adjust-

ment is convenient and practical tool to improve contrast. However, for some pictures if the RGB value in the the floral leaf areas and the backgroud have close values, they will be treated with curve adjustment differntly in each chanels (RGB) during the process of black and white layer adjustment.

4. Layer Blending Modes and its opacity can also be the effective technic to en-

5. In addition, Masking Technique is a powerful tool to get rid off unwanted detail

6. At the end before sending them to print, the RGB digital values are checked in

7. Material and techniques of art or design works The art work will be created through the use of a computer software Adobe Illustrator. The color tone of the art work consists of bright colors which they imply the sense of technology. The source of the technology color research is from (https://99designs.com/logo-design/ business-of-color/technology) which the source has define the color to be bold, bright, modern and diverse. In a quick changing industry with numerous new technologies, unwavering quality and simplicity in design is critical, therefore, the infographic is designed with the sense of simplicity, legibility, aesthetic and informative to general spectators. All of the artwork is created by the designer with the uses of research to support the design element and layout.

6. Process of art or design works 1. The art work comprises of the understanding of big data property that the value of big data can be translate into a graphical form and color for an audience easy understanding of big data 3V’s. 2. First the volume of “big data” has to be understood by the designer such as how big is one petabyte (unit used to define big data measurement) when compares a known unit to general audiences. For example, one petabyte is equal to 13.3 years of HD video, can be understood easier for viewer who doesn’t recognize the size of one petabyte. Therefore, when comparing a unit of big data measurement to something normal viewer is used to result can be understand easier.

3. Designer has to first of all under-

Background or Significant of the project Back to the year 1967 when the convenience stores and department stores have not yet been extensively placed, a market was established on Soi Ladprao 47 where various kinds of fresh food, vegetable, and fruit were available for selling. It was also the meeting point of the people living in Ladprao and nearby area with the only reason for supporting the extension of living area for middle-class ones in almost 50 years ago. At that time, Ladprao was considered the “zone-three” area, located away from the central city and I, as the one growing up not far from the market, have been viewing the lives and uncountable memories therein.

One thing that I am interested in

and would like to present about this market is “the cart caravan”. Apart from its usage as the vehicle for selling things, many of

them are the residences for the workers or homeless people. Some are more than 30 years old, parked, and wrecked. Many carts have been applied for the use of the owners too.

More than 30 years of impression I have with the living in that area, I have met

with the merchants, vagrants, and workers living there. The carts represent them even on the day that they are away and show how they depend on themselves. We can see the creativity, belief, the way these people lives throughout the things displayed on the carts. Sufficiency living and experiences can be seen via that tiny space.

This artwork is the combination between imagination and the truth, becoming the

ideal cart with three principles under the word “Sufficiency” from the living of market people. They are “Goodness”, “Patience”, and “Tolerance”. I can always feel these three words from the lives in the market and I also would like to present the scent of Thai in

After finishing the artwork, I found that the experience and impression can be the

creative topic. My experiment from using the raw material from the past together with experience and what I have been absorbing from daily passing-by can make the ordinary story more interesting. The testing starting from creating the pattern by hand sketching and create graphic elements from various pictures is subjective, however, it is the experimental way delivering the new creative work with data collection as a basis and transform according to the creator’s preference. This is the mechanic that I use with the student, asking them to apply with their creative works.

I do hope that this design work will lead the viewer to imagine further with what I

1. Designing artwork with Isometric pattern is really difficult and takes time if

the designer is new to the material and technique. But using grid and sketch the layout as many as possible is another way to get the solutions. Isometric design is all about planning, the designer have to plan out the elements that is going to be placed on the platform. Making sure that each element is fit the parallel perspective, they have to be reasonable in scales and the smaller elements are not covered with the larger ones. The most important is the style that the designer has picked to do, they have to make sure that the environment and the characters are go together. 2. The King Rama IX’s Idea of sufficiency is just a part of his hard work as a king who dedicate himself to the people. There are a lot of things that should be told and pass on to the next generations. When something is complicated, it has many parts, but each parts can be taken out to examine (a car, a computer, a network of roads), but something that is complex cannot be taken apart without disrupting the whole thing (crowds, cooking process, a detailed rug). So a complex film should not be able to be taken apart and must always come with the full chunk or else it lost its meaning. The “parts” in context of film I think -62

A continuity shots would simply mean a movement of one shot is linked to the next, and it feels like time moves smoothly (even though the two shots were taken at a different time), while montage is just series of shots put together. I think it is not possible to make a complex movie using continuity. Even if an entire movie is one long take, like Birdman, it can still be taken apart scene by scene. It is not just the visual but also the story too. Imagine a movie where a camera is placed in one location and never moved. Any development in the story would still mean that that part be taken out and stand on its own, therefore, it is not complex. I think a movie made up entirely out of montage where the shots are linked through movement with match cut, is the best way to create a complex film by definition.

During the sketch on this project, I got struck sometimes and had no Idea what to sketch and which picture is appropriate to show his dedication. I had to go back to the beginning of the process to find anything that related to his sacrifices and goodness. I felt this is very important to start working. For example, lotus flower and Ray of light would be a great representative objects of his high goodness and esteem. In term of digital drawing technic, beginning with sketching in grayscale is the way value, distance and overall tone can be checked initially before painting in colors. using Overlay technic, blend mode in adobe photoshop, makes colors look so dark and dull. Multiply and opacity layer would be an appropriate solution for this.

3. Background or significant of the project His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand had advocated the philosophy of sufficiency economy since the 1970’s, highlighting a reasonably comfortable way of living based on the fundamental principles of Thai culture. The three principles aimed at the development are based on moderation, prudence and social immunity. As a means to address current development challenges, which are issues of institutions, human capital, environmental sustainability and the role of the government, the philosophy aims at improving human well-being, from an individual to a country, as a developmental goal. In his royal statement, His Majesty stressed the importance of building stability in the overall economic foundation as an essential component for the country’s development. Fundamentally, as Thailand is an agricultural country, His Majesty focused on the country’s economy towards agro-economy and food stability. He applied and initiated the essential principles of PSE to help Thai farmers who suffer from the impacts of economic crisis, natural disasters and other unproductive natural conditions. 9. Knowledge after finished produce art or design works The beautiful landscapes of Thailand’s colorful rice fields are a dedication to rice farmers’ low-paid and heavy labor. As rice production is an important part of the national economy it is imperative to recognize the determination and solidity given into these cultivations. Consequently, as stated by His Majesty since the 1970’s, the focus on Thailand as an agricultural country should be towards agroeconomy and food stability. As he applied and initiated the essential principles of PSE to help Thai farmers, I have taken his philosophy and interpreted it into an artistic visual form.

visualize the pure beauty and essence of the rice fields’ value and remove anything that may deem unnecessary.

The definition of sufficiency is an

ly of something essential. Subsequently, minimalism is a tool to rid oneself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s important. This too can be said of abstract art. In general, abstract art is often seen as carrying a moral dimension, in that it can be seen to stand for virtues such as order, purity, simplicity and spirituality. It is an art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. The nonfigurative compositions in Horizons were created in such a manner as a means to -117

1. Creative work name Notebook : A Journey in Freytag’s Pyramid 2. Name of artist or designer Yossapol Chutipanyabut 3. Background or significant of the project In 1863, Gustav Freytag analyzed Aristotle’s theory of tragedy and found patterns that classic novels had in common, which were 1) Exposition: the set up of the story, 2) Inciting Incident: the first conflict that triggers the story intensity, 3) Rising Action: the conflict gets more complicated,

“The 2nd CA Creative Work Faculty Show Case 2016 – Sufficiency

4) Climax: the highest tension of the story, 5) Falling Action: the conflict unraveled, 6) Resolution: the problem solved, and 7) Dénouement: what happens after the problem has been solved. This theory is later known as Freytag’s Pyramid. (http://www.ohio.edu/people/hartleyg/ ref/fiction/freytag.html).

9. Knowledge after finished produce art or design works One of the purposes of this prose is to illustrate Freytag’s Pyramid structure to readers, the author found it quite difficult to show the theory subtly along with the story and still make the readers educated the 7 plot plots in Freytag’s Pyramid. Hence, the theory is told quite explicitly. Although the author tried to experiment shuffling around all the 7 plot points, letting the protagonist faces death in the beginning of the story in which this would rather be climax, with several events of death, the big picture of this story falls into the Freytag’s Pyramid unavoidably. This shows that the theory is a fundamental of
