Welcome to this very special Stars Awards edition of Take 5.

It’s been a great summer so far, if a little hot at times – just the two heatwaves! As always, it is so pleasing to read about all the Food, Fun and Friendship all around Care South as you’ve been celebrating summer fetes, playing beachball hockey and tennis, visiting the Margaret Green Animal Rescue Centre, bottle feeding two young lambs and celebrating 100th birthdays.

The online Stars Awards celebrations were held at the beginning of June, when we celebrated together and announced the shortlisted finalists for the Stars Awards ceremony at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth on 17 July 2025. The parties across all of our homes and offices looked great fun and congratulations to Elizabeth House with their ABBA themed celebration who, judging by the photos, seem to have celebrated longest and hardest!

As usual the theme of the Stars Awards was very much centred on the Food, Fun and Friendship across Care South, with some 140 of us gathering at the Vitality Stadium to celebrate all that is good about the amazing care that you provide. I am only sorry that we could not host everyone, as we have so very many stars across Care South.

Teamwork is an important aspect of our HEART values and, as always, we were pleased to be able to celebrate so many strong teams across Care South - whether that be the catering team at Maiden Castle House who won the award for the Best Dining Experience, or the housekeeping and maintenance team at Fairlawn in winning Pride In Your Home, or the activities team at Alexandra House who very deservedly won the award for the Best Activities Programme.

The Pride In Your Service award was won by our co-ordinators and admin team at our West Dorset Office, and Sally Howard at Dorset House celebrated winning the award for Admin Team of the Year in our care homes.

Our Bournemouth Office and St Ives House management teams won awards in Best Management Team for care at home and residential care, respectively – well done to both!

Insofar as the silverware was concerned, our Chairman Chris Kean presented Sarah Broom and the Crewkerne Office with the Care at Home Cup and Jo Passmore and Kenwith Castle with the cup for Residential Care Home of the Year. Well done to both services for a fantastic year – a great team effort!

WELCOME TO TAKE 5

At the awards we received a presentation from Karen Hodges, Care South’s Dementia Lead, on our journey to become true dementia specialists. The results of our Dementia Care coaching, our Namaste programme and our decaffeinated by default trial have been quite remarkable and demonstrate that Care South is truly embracing outstanding dementia care and making very positive contributions to the quality of life for people living with dementia. It was, therefore, so pleasing to see Chris Kean present the 2025 Chair’s Award to Karen Hodges, recognising her exceptional work within Care South.

Really well done to our head office Finance team who won the award for Best Head Office support team – an award which was voted on by all our services. The CEO’s award – an award voted on by me – went to Wendy Fearn, our Head of Finance, for an exceptional and largely unsung performance over 25 years with Care South. Wendy celebrated her 25 years on the day of the awards!

Many many congratulations to all our winners.

Some of you were lucky enough to be nominated for an award and some even more fortunate to win an award. However, competition this year was intense with quality and compliance across all services in Care South being at such high levels, and whilst your contribution may not have been recognised in this way, please be assured that it is greatly appreciated.

Exciting times lie ahead as we start the development of our new care village at the old Sussexdown site and we have just submitted our planning application for another care village on Queen Anne Drive in Merley.

As ever, our HEART values remain incredibly important to everyone throughout the organisation, and I know those values are ever present in all your hard work.

As is always the case, you have continued go that “extra mile” in keeping all our residents and our care at home clients warm and safe, with Food, Fun and Friendship in abundance, and at the heart of everything you do.

Thank you to all of you for your commitment to Care South!

Simon

A MOMENT WITH MAGGIE

Director of HR and Training

What a fantastic few weeks it has been weather-wise. I hope you have all been enjoying the sun (safely) and the longer evenings with your families and friends.

It’s been a busy few weeks, with the Stars Awards announcement of finalists event on 4 June 2025, our ongoing drive to recruit high quality staff into all our locations, and with your help we continue to achieve over 99.5% in training compliance. As indicated previously we are moving forward with our delegates for the

2025 Lead to Succeed programme which will run after the summer, and we continue to strengthen other skills across the business. There have been amendments to our website, streamlining the information and improving the experience overall. We have redeveloped our Welcome Pack for new starters and have gone through a re-election of Staff Association Representatives – welcome to all those who have recently joined!

We are maintaining improvements in the retention of staff, which has improved by 4% compared to last year, and thank you for everything that you do to support your colleagues on a daily basis! Living our

HEART values is key to staff engagement, and we regularly invite you to share your feedback through staff surveys or via your local Staff Association representatives, management line, or by speaking with members of the HR team. More recently Simon Bird – CEO reminded us all of the Whistleblowing Policy for those matters that require that type of escalation.

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the Stars Awards main event on 17 July 2025 and I look forward to sharing more news with you all in the coming months.

I enjoy being a Trustee Director supporting the management of Care South, a charity that is run enthusiastically and efficiently, whilst at the same time providing continuous kindness to our residents and clients.

What is your favourite memory from being involved in the care industry?

This must be when I first understood how important it is for our residents to be offered the highest standard of nourishment. Our excellent chefs take great care in meal planning, preparation and delivery, and meeting residents’ individual needs.

UPDATE FROM PHIL

Director of Residential Care

Every time I sit down to write this section of Take 5, I’m struck by just how much you’ve all achieved.

The dedication, creativity, and care you bring to your work each day is truly inspiring. Whether it’s delivering exceptional care or embracing new ideas to enhance the lives of our residents, your commitment never waivers.

Thank you for everything you do. Great care is built on continuous improvement, and

MAURICE’S MATCHDAY WISH

Talbot View resident, Maurice, experienced a special wish come true when he visited the Vitality Stadium to watch a Cherries match with his wife.

Maurice, a keen AFC Bournemouth fan, shared his wish with the team to visit the stadium with his wife, Marian, to watch his beloved team in action. Inspired by his passion, Molly, Talbot View’s Activities Lead, and Jamie, a carer, took Maurice to the final match of the season against Leicester City.

it’s clear that you all strive to achieve that every day.

In my last update, I spoke about both ‘Namaste Care’ and our ‘decaffeinated by default’ trial. I am delighted to say that both projects are now permanent features of our care delivery. ‘Namaste’ will continue to roll out across all our homes, and since launching our ‘decaffeinated by default’ approach, we’ve seen a 25% reduction in nighttime falls—a fantastic outcome for the safety of our residents.

Having mentioned continuous improvement, we are now developing a

‘Dining for Dementia’ programme, so I will update you all on this in the next edition of Take 5!

By the time you read this, we will have held our annual Stars Awards, so I just want to further add my congratulations to all our nominees and winners and at the same time acknowledge the great commitment and care you all deliver day in, day out.

Enjoy the summer!

Phil

Maurice said that it was ‘really enjoyable and very good’ to be part of the action and to hear the roar of the crowds as England won 2-0.

His wife, Marian, said: “It was lovely to see Maurice back at the Vitality Stadium and lots of his friends there were pleased to see him. Maurice even remembered some of the songs that the fans were singing.”

FORMER PHOTOGRAPHER TO THE STARS CELEBRATES

100TH BIRTHDAY

A former photographer who captured photos of The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones has celebrated his 100th birthday at Fairlawn.

Joined by his sons Nick and Martin, along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, Ron marked the special milestone with a party supported by the care home team.

Originally from London, Ron worked as a professional photographer until the age of 71. He married his late wife Joyce in 1952, and the couple lived near the BBC Television Centre in Shepherd’s Bush. Ron’s remarkable career included photographing stars on BBC’s Top of the Pops and Parkinson, among other shows.

His son, Nick, said: “He has always been a really fantastic dad and was so lovely to us growing up. He lived at home before he came to Fairlawn, and the whole team have been so good to Dad. He initially came to stay for two weeks and then never wanted to leave.”

SUE RECOGNISED WITH ‘UNSUNG HERO AWARD’

Maiden Castle House volunteer, Sue, was presented with the ‘Unsung Hero’ trophy at this year’s Dorset Care Awards.

She was recognised at this year’s ceremony in May, organised by the Dorset Care Association, which took place in Dorchester. Ashley Smith, Home Manager at Maiden Castle House, put Sue forward for the accolade.

Sue visits Bob every day and enjoys taking him out into the local community. Afterwards, she offers an extra pair of hands with serving lunches and chatting to residents, as well as playing the keyboard for them to sing along to.

Speaking about her award-winning efforts, Sue said: “Bob and I have been together for 37 years and he has lived at Maiden Castle House for the past 18 months. I still want to

look after him, even if I can’t do that at home. I like doing things to help the staff as they do so much to support Bob. We have a lot of laughs. It’s a fun place to be.”

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

HOMES MARK VE DAY ANNIVERSARY

Well done to all homes for your fantastic efforts in hosting street parties and welcoming the community to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May.

At Kenwith Castle, the afternoon began with the National Anthem and then prayers led by Revd Hilary Kemp. Residents enjoyed a wartime singalong, dancing, and afternoon tea with Pimm’s, alongside a 1940s-themed display brought in by a resident’s daughter.

Eileen, a resident, said: “I enjoyed seeing the mannequins dressed in 1940s costumes. It brought back vivid memories of happy and sad times. I also enjoyed singing along to the wartime songs.”

Wickmeads held a Dad’s Army-themed talk, encouraging residents to share wartime memories, while Maiden Castle House and St Ives House each hosted musical afternoons.

CIRCUS DISPLAY FOR CARE HOME OPEN WEEK

Our care home teams thoroughly embraced the fun and spirit of Care Home Open Week in June.

The national initiative, organised by Championing Social Care, aims to connect care homes with their local communities and champion the warm, caring, and vibrant environments that care homes provide.

Residents and staff at St Ives House were joined by members of the local community for the seaside-themed Catch of the Day aerial circus performance by The Dot

Dorris, 99, from Maiden Castle House, recalled: “The noise of the planes was so frightening as they flew much lower than they do now. It almost felt like they were on top of your head.”

The events offered a moving opportunity for residents, families, and visitors to reflect on and commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Collective, a professional theatre company who put on dementia-friendly, accessible shows. Afterwards, some of the residents jumped at the chance to have a go on a rope swing and use the aerial silks.

Liz, who lives at St Ives House, said: “The highlight of my afternoon was having a go on the swing. I always wanted to travel with the circus as a young girl so I cannot believe

at my age that I had the opportunity to do this.”

Throughout the week, our homes hosted a variety of other activities including a picnic with garden games at Marjorie House; barbecue at Dorset House; live music at Elizabeth House and a resident’s artwork on display at Wickmeads, all of which were open to the public.

ST IVES HOUSE’S £3,400 DONATION TO ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

Residents and the team at St Ives House care home have raised over £3,400 for Alzheimer’s Society, a charity supporting people living with dementia.

Over the past year, they’ve hosted events for families, loved ones, and the local community, including summer and Christmas fayres, fundraising open days, a spring coffee morning, and Elf Day. Residents also made forget-me-not flower badges to sell in reception. All proceeds were handed over to the charity during

KATHLEEN REUNITED WITH HER FELLOW WRENS

Elizabeth House resident Kathleen was delighted to reunite with her friends from the Bournemouth Wrens Association to mark the 81st anniversary of D-Day.

Kathleen was joined by Val, Polly, Pat, Jackie and Tricia for an afternoon of live music and fun. Kathleen joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service (Wrens)

Dementia Action Week in May, which promotes the importance of early dementia diagnosis.

Chloe, whose grandmother lived at St Ives House for four years, completed a 15,000foot skydive for the charity in her honour. She set a target of £600 but ended up raising £2,545 for the worthy cause.

Emma Cotton, Home Manager at St Ives House, said: “Our residents love engaging with the local community, so our fundraising mission was the perfect combination of hosting fun events while also fundraising for Alzheimer’s Society, which supports people at a challenging time in their lives.”

aged 18 in June 1944 - the same month as D-Day, which marked the beginning of Western Europe’s liberation.

Kathleen served as a bomb range marker, monitoring targets and charting parachutes released from planes. Reflecting on the reunion, she said: “Seeing the girls walk into the lounge

filled my heart with so much joy and love. It was lovely to talk about all the memories we share.”

Kathleen left the Wrens in 1946 after meeting her husband Peter, who flew in a Blenheim Bomber. They later settled in Poole where they welcomed their son, Tim.

MEET THE RELATIVES –LEE AT CASTLE DENE

Lee had cared for his mum for five years, supporting her to live independently at home, before finding that she was becoming unsteady on her feet and no longer able to manage stairs.

He wanted to find somewhere where she would feel safe, comfortable, and well looked after, leading him to think of Castle Dene, which he passed every day on the way to his mum’s home.

Lee said: “My father died five years ago, and I had been caring for Mum ever since. She was gradually getting more fragile and unsteady on her feet and had a couple of falls. She just wasn’t safe in her own home anymore as I couldn’t be there 24/7.”

Lee said that the Castle Dene team made him feel welcome from the moment he arrived. “I came in here with tears in my eyes and I just didn’t know who to turn to. The team sat me

GRACE AND LEE’S STARRING ROLE

Keep a look out over the coming months for our newly updated Care South at Home brochure and leaflets featuring Lee and Grace, two of the fantastic carers based in our Somerset office.

They generously supported our dedicated photoshoot, featuring professional models to represent both our valued clients and compassionate care team. They were also happy to step in front of the camera, taking a moment to play a leading role in several photos!

Watch Lee talk about his positive experience

down and they made me feel reassured.

“That feeling of wanting to look after Mum never goes away, regardless of whether she’s in her own home or a care home. Now I’m her son again, not her carer. I feel like a big weight has come off my shoulders.

“The Castle Dene team are magnificent. They are just so cheerful, caring and nothing is too much trouble for them. It’s a home away from home for Mum.”

the last Take

5 article I mentioned that the Care at Home teams welcomed the change from winter to the warmer weather, but perhaps I hadn’t anticipated how hot it would get!

I am pleased to confirm that, in the next few weeks, you will all receive our branded summer polo shirts. I hope that this helps to keep you cool in the extreme heat of the summer. Please remember to stay hydrated and encourage clients to do so, keeping their homes as cool as possible. We are making steady progress in growing our private market share and are seeing many positive impacts from this. Our community profile is stronger thanks to a lot of work across social media, some wonderful homecare.co.uk reviews and a range of community engagement activities. If you know of any ‘make a wish’ opportunities for our clients, please let us know – it is so heartwarming to see colleagues supporting clients to realise a wish.

It has been a privilege to present several long service awards over the last couple of months, celebrating from three to 25 years’ service with Care South. It is always a pleasure to celebrate this with colleagues - most recently Julie Harding,

BUCKINGHAM PALACE GARDEN PARTY UPDATE FROM MARTIN

Two members of our Somerset team attended a Buckingham Palace garden party to honour their contribution to social care.

Sarah Broom, Manager of Care at Home for Somerset and West Dorset, and Alison Hunt, Specialist Home Care Assistant, were nominated by Martin Ross on behalf of the Homecare Association in recognition of their dedicated service. Sarah has worked for Care South for more than 30 years, and Alison has been part of the team for over 25 years.

Sarah and Alison were thrilled to see many

Katie Guppy, Rahul Gohulan and Steve Raffell, who converted to care from window cleaning! Thanks to you all.

There are some exciting developments in some of our hospital discharge services. In Somerset we are in a very strong position to win the new D2A long-term contract from April next year. This is an opportunity to expand our area, grow the hours and the team, and develop the model. In Bournemouth, we are currently working with University Hospitals Dorset and Dorset Council to move the current hospital discharge service into a new reablement and recovery model, with many future development opportunities for colleagues. Watch this space! In our Assisted Living communities, summer activities are well underway with residents. James Silverton, Head of Assisted Living, visits the communities regularly and is paving the way for our future developments.

Finally, we are in the process of inviting feedback from our clients, stakeholders and professionals. I look forward to sharing the feedback, including opportunities for improvement and learning. I am sure the results will also shine a light on the difference you are all making to people’s lives in their homes.

Keep on doing a great job!

Sarah said: “It was a once in a lifetime experience. I found it a bit overwhelming to be invited, as I just want to do a good

job for everyone, but it feels nice to be recognised.”

Alison said: “I felt highly honoured to be invited. In my job I just enjoy meeting our clients and learning about their life stories. It’s nice to know that we can make a difference to their lives.”

FOODIE FUN IN THE CARE HOMES

Residents have been engaging in a host of food-related activities in our homes and out in the community. Recent activities have included biscuit decorating, ice cream and waffle treats. These activities help to stimulate residents’ interest in food and drink, promote their freedom of choice, boost their emotional wellbeing and encourage social interaction.

Beauchamp House residents spent a relaxing afternoon getting creative by mixing icing with many colours to decorate biscuits to be enjoyed later with their cups of tea and coffee.

Buxton House residents and their visiting families enjoyed ice lollies and ice cream following their afternoon tea buffet on the anniversary of VE Day while being entertained by the Timeless Tunes Choir.

Marjorie House residents relaxed during a pamper, bubbles and waffles afternoon featuring glasses of bubbles to accompany freshly cooked waffles from Patrick Fensterseifer, Executive Chef.
