Take 5

This edition of Take 5 is packed full of the food, fun and friendship that everyone’s been enjoying in celebrating our Queen’s remarkable achievement and service to our great country.

It also serves as a reminder of all that is good about Care South and the work that we all do – often in the most challenging of circumstances.

Thank you for the part that you play in this – this has meant that we can again begin to go on outings, hold fetes and garden parties and allow our residents and families to reunite in the way we did before the pandemic. We have proved that we can do this safely with the Platinum Jubilee parties and we will continue to hold many more such events safely throughout the summer. Our Chairman, Jane Stichbury, and I have resumed our regular visits to all services. It has been so good to see you in person again.

All Care South staff continue to be amazing – so resilient and dedicated to providing the very best care. I know that April’s large pay increases will seem like a distant memory – especially with all this hot weather – but we continue to focus on staff welfare across the organisation. We know how hard you all work – we value you all – and are always looking at ways to improve our reward and recognition packages.

Over recent months we have seen many relaxations in the restrictions for care homes.

We still have regular testing and the requirement to wear face masks and we look forward to the time when those too are lifted – that will make such a difference for you all.

I know that, like the rest of our sector, there have been staffing pressures, but our recruitment programme is now working really well. Over the last eight weeks we’ve welcomed well over 2,500 new hours into our homes and Care South at Home offices.

As we continue to welcome new staff to Care South please remember our ‘Refer a Friend’ scheme which could earn you £500 and mean you get to work with a friend!

In the last edition of Take 5, I expressed my pride in seeing the amazing teamwork at Care South in the temporary move of residents from Queensmead to Castle Dene.

We hope to be back to Queensmead in the autumn once the repairs are completed.

Equally, in this edition, I was filled with pride to learn that one of our colleagues called upon his Care South experience and training when he reacted to help save a life (page 9). Well done Henryk – we’re all very proud of what you did! Care South’s HEART Values shining through again!

I know it can be tough going, but we are doing well as a team and there is still plenty to be excited about at Care South...

The extension works to Beauchamp House are now nearly finished. Fairlawn has a wonderful new garden which the residents are enjoying. New gardens at Buxton House and Kenwith Castle are well under way. We are soon to be submitting a planning application for the complete refurbishment of Sussexdown. Demolition in advance of the construction of the new home in Poole has been paused for a few weeks – we have two families of seagulls nesting on the roof!

I look forward to seeing you all soon, but in the meantime, thank you all for all your hard work and the very high standards that you continue to observe in the most testing of times. I really do appreciate it. Thank you.

A memorable weekend of royal celebrations Our homes certainly came alive for a right-royal celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Our fantastic teams and residents marked the occasion with garden parties, entertainment and fun activities and it felt even more special that we could host such large events with families and friends.

We were delighted to support with branded Care South Platinum Jubilee packs containing plenty of decorations, accessories and fun activities. We hope these added to your day and we have been very grateful for the positive feedback.

A big thank you to everyone who made such a huge effort and for sending superb images and details about each of the events. It was truly special to watch everyone come together to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The great Care South Jubilee cake-off As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, all our homes were challenged to create the ’ultimate 70’ Platinum Jubilee cake – and what a competition it was!

Everyone certainly went all out and there were some truly spectacular cakes created.

And the worthy winners were...

Most collaborative cake – Fremington Manor Standing at over nine feet tall, this cake was built and decorated by residents and the team. It was fantastic to hear that all residents were encouraged to take part, including those that struggled to hold a paint brush. Well done all!

There are too many names to mention but there were 60 winners across our residential homes and 12 winners within Care South at Home.

Recruitment initiatives update Firstly, just to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in our recruitment film. You were all brilliant!

Also, just a little reminder of our £500 ‘Refer a Friend’ recruitment incentive, which is available to you, we are always keen to welcome personal recommendations.

Lastly, our ‘Win a paid day off’ as mentioned by Maggie was a great success and thank you all for your feedback.

This initiative was created to recognise and celebrate our teams, and four members from each home and Care South at Home office enjoyed this reward in June.

Platinum Jubilee celebrations – 100’s of residents,

Fern Brook Lodge kick-started the celebrations with a spectacular garden party and BBQ.

At Sussexdown it was wonderful to welcome the local community back to join in with the celebrations.

At Wickmeads the garden party entertainment included local singing sensation, ‘Retro Rita’.

Great times across Care South from Devon to West Sussex

Fremington Manor residents enjoyed a fun afternoon with accessories from the Care South Jubilee packs.

The Talbot View team created this striking, red, white and blue display as part of their celebration buffet.

The weather was perfect for the festivities in the garden at Sussexdown.

Staff and residents at St Ives House created this amazing picture timeline of the Queen’s reign – it was a great talking point and brought back lots of the residents’ own fond memories from the last 70 years.

Residents at Buxton House were delighted to receive a personal note back on behalf of the Queen after they sent her a letter congratulating her on her Platinum Jubilee.

Dorset House enjoyed a very special visit from local Great British Bake-Off star, Maggie, who gave a baking demonstration and even got some of the residents judging the special staff baking competition.

Alexandra House was delighted to be joined by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Julie Bagwell for the opening of their garden party, alongside Eileen Pickering, one of the home’s longest-standing residents, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

It wasn’t just our homes that were celebrating – the Care South at Home Crewkerne team got into the spirit and dressed up for the day with royal family masks.

Care South welcomes...

New Home Manager for Queensmead at Castle Dene Queensmead at Castle Dene has welcomed new Home Manager, Lana Wright.

Lana brings with her a huge wealth of experience having worked in the care industry for 19 years, with specialisms in residential and dementia care.

Prior to joining Care South, Lana worked in a residential home for 14 years, starting out as Care Assistant and progressing to Manager of the Dementia Community.

Rahul is new Operations Support Manager for Care South at Home Rahul Gohulan has joined the Care South at Home team as Operations Support Manager.

He will be responsible for supporting Care South at Home’s registered Managers and teams with day-to-day operational support, quality assurance and monitoring.

As well as years of industry experience, Lana holds numerous qualifications, such as an NVQ Level 5 in Health and Social Care and in 2021 and she won Manager of the Year at her previous company’s annual awards.

Rahul has over 16 years’ experience in the care industry and one of his key responsibilities is to ensure care at home services operate in accordance with CQC requirements.

Sussexdown welcomes new Home Manager, Paul

David joins the HR team

Paul Morris has joined Sussexdown as Home Manager, having worked in the care industry for over 25 years and specialises in dementia care.

Prior to joining Care South, Paul worked as an Operations Support Manager and before this, lived and worked in Australia as a Dementia Consultant. He has previously owned a dementia consultancy and training service.

Paul holds a Registered Managers Award and formal qualifications in dementia care.

David Richardson joins Care South as a new Human Resources Business Partner.

His role will involve working with the rest of the HR team and Operational Managers to achieve the objectives of driving improved performance and capability of the workforce and supporting retention initiatives.

David joins the team from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust where he worked for five years.

He’s looking forward to supporting the Operational Managers in delivering their objectives as well as getting to know the wider workforce and ensuring that they feel supported and valued.

Fern Brook Lodge welcomes experienced new Manager Deb Wiltshire joins the home to lead the team at Fern Brook Lodge.

minutes with Henryk Szota, Care Supervisor for Care South at Home’s Somerset office

She has over 40 years’ experience, ten of which have been in the role of Home Manager.

When did you start working for Care South?

What’s your position and what does it entail?

Deb trained as a nurse at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, where she specialised in District Nursing and was also a Senior Lecturer, teaching student nurses in Cambridge.

I joined Care South at Home in 2016 in my current role of Care Supervisor. I cover a variety of responsibilities including signing up new clients, creating care plans and maintaining paperwork. I support with hands-on care in the community and work closely with the carers as much as possible. I am also the Staff Association Representative for all of the Somerset teams.

Deb is passionate about palliative care and also continence care, which is reflected in her qualifications.

10-year Anniversary celebrations for Lisa Congratulations to Lisa Bennett as she celebrates her 10-year anniversary at Care South at Home.

Lisa joined Care South in 2012 as Home Care Assistant before being promoted to Senior Home Care Assistant in 2014, and then Client Supervisor in 2021.

Along the way, Lisa achieved her Level 2 NVQ in Health and Social Care and truly represents Care South’s HEART Values.

What advice would you give to anyone starting a career in care?

It’s important to always remember you are part of a larger team and you are all there to support each other at all times.

What’s been the highlight of your career with Care South so far?

Being able to support Care South at Home to take on the Discharge to Assess (D2A) programme and help grow it to what it is today. It has grown into one of the biggest operations we run from our office. We are now taking patients daily and work closely with hospital therapists to support patients with their independence and identify the care they will need moving forward. It’s a great service that really helps people be the best they can be.

We understand you recently became somewhat of a hero whilst on your way to work. Can you tell us about it?

I was driving to work when suddenly the car in front of me flipped over and hurtled further up the road. We were the only cars around. I went to support the driver who was trapped with a head injury. I used my tunic to help stem the bleeding and the What3Words app on my work phone to get the emergency services to us. It was 15 minutes before help arrived – the longest 15 minutes of my life! The fire service kept me in place to support with the head wound as they freed the driver and then the air ambulance crew were able to take over. I later found out that the driver was OK after a lot of stitches and treatment for concussion.

What do you do for fun in your spare time?

I have a 3-year-old daughter and 6-month-old son and I truly love being a dad. Any free time I have I spend with them!

Update from Care South at Home I hope that you are all well and able to enjoy the summer weather, remember to stay hydrated!

Providing care in weather extremities is never easy but your resilience, passion and dedication shines through in these conditions. The spring was another busy period for the Care South at Home team and the next few months will see some very positive changes for our clients, staff and services.

It is wonderful to see the Care South at Home team in their tunics and drinking out of their Care South at Home water bottles – and it has been a pleasure to meet with some of you in our coffee mornings or as I travel around the services.

In May we were sad to say goodbye to Debbie Lindley after many years of great service but pleased to welcome Rahul Gohulan as new Operations Support Manager. It is fair to say that Rahul has hit the ground running, joining Bex Symes in operationally managing the services and driving modernisation, whilst being absolutely focussed on quality and safety. Along with our Managers and Business Partners, Sarah Broom, Tracie Gregory, Nicole Gibson (Neil Martin covering), Zoe Fisher (HR), James Maclean (Recruitment), we have a dedicated and talented team.

We have successfully transferred four of Care South’s five Assisted Living services into Care South at Home, the remaining one to be transferred by the end of July.

Our Board of Trustees have approved the roll-out of Electronic Care Planning and a new rostering system called EveryLife PASS in Care South at Home. You will soon be able to access care plans, complete care delivery notes and medication administration on your devices, as well as accessing your live roster.

In preparation for this, Karen Hodges, Learning & Development Business Partner, has been seconded to enhance and refresh our care planning and medication practice and approach.

Currently underway, this project has been much valued by all.

These projects will see us truly modernised and future proofed – but don’t worry, a full training programme for all staff will be implemented prior to roll-out!

The financial climate is impacting many people – we have pushed hard to try and maintain the best possible pay conditions and recently temporarily increased our Care South at Home mileage rate, recognising that our front-line staff in Care South at Home are under particular pressure at the moment due to the nature of their community-based role.

I do hope that these measures have helped.

In summary, Care South at Home is growing sustainably, diversifying by working more closely with the NHS and local authorities on specialist services and modernising, joining the digital age. In the next year we will open a new office, and find a new office for the Bournemouth team.

Recruitment and retention remain a key focus for us all, in Care South at Home we have so far fared better than most other providers, but we must continue this drive.

However, we are now launching an exciting new competition which is focused on all things Care South.

The winning photo will be featured in the next issue of Take 5 – it may even make it onto the front cover!

We’d like to see fun activities taking place, delicious lunch get-togethers, our Care South at Home teams out in the community, and images which really showcase the fantastic work you all do day-in, day-out. Update from Aaron It was great to be able to arrange our first in-person Home Managers meeting on 16 June.

Community defibrillator at Sussexdown RAFA Housing Limited at Sussexdown is one of the latest beneficiaries of the Chairman’s 2020 Fund.

A donation from the fund has enabled them to install a new defibrillator at Stanmore House in the grounds of Sussexdown. This community asset is for use by Sussexdown, the RAFA Housing Limited retirement complex and the general public.

It was such a productive day and everyone enjoyed sharing successes and best practice. It was also a great opportunity for those who haven’t seen each other for some time to catch up, to meet some new faces, and give them a big welcome to the team. We are looking forward to holding these more regularly.

Our focus as part of the residential care team is on striving not only to be good, but great, and when it comes to our care, every little detail counts and genuinely makes a difference to residents in our care and their loved ones. It’s important that we keep this constantly in mind and that we are focusing on the care and making sure we all take responsibility and ownership at every level.

The ‘spaghetti challenge’ at the recent Home Managers meeting!

Team Maiden Castle House smash 100k running challenge Maiden Castle House Acting Home Manager, Ash Smith, Chef, Maria Barnes and her daughter, Jodie Philpot have smashed their target of running 100km in 24 hours, finishing at just over a phenomenal 16 hours and raising more than £2,000 for the home.

The trio set off in moonlight, running through Portland, Weymouth and Dorchester and were delighted to be cheered on by residents – which really spurred them on for those 62 miles! Congratulations and thank you to Ash, Maria and Jodie!

Sussexdown cycle for World Alzheimer’s Day In aid of World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September, members of the team at Sussexdown are planning to cycle 227 miles ‘point to point’ on an exercise bike, which is equivalent to the distance from Kenwith Castle to Sussexdown!

They hope to raise over £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Society.

minutes with Lucam Neri, Head Chef at St Ives House What made you decide to become a Chef?

When I was 15, I started work for my family’s business in Brazil. They have a food truck and I used to help prepare the food and liaise with the customers, which was what introduced me to the food industry. When I was 19, I went to Spain and worked for Hard Rock Café in Madrid. I learnt so much in my first professional catering position and I have since worked with lots of different cuisines and had some wonderful experiences. I love being a chef and bringing smiles to the faces of those eating my food. I am passionate and I feel I put my soul into my dishes and love introducing residents to new foods and cooking their favourites.

Lucam’s Lamb Shank Bourguignon Try these delicious and economical lamb shanks cooked in a rich wine sauce – ideal served with with creamy mash or roast potatoes.

Ingredients (serves 4) Olive oil (to brown) 4 British lamb shanks 30g plain flour 3 rashers streaky bacon, coarsely chopped

How do you plan and create the menu?

225g small shallots, peeled

My menus are created based on residents’ likes and dislikes and we have one-to-one meetings with them every day and always ask them during service for feedback so we can ensure we change things to what they really like the most. We also offer second options if something isn’t quite what they would like to eat that day.

110g button or halved cup mushrooms

What are some of your residents’ favourite meals?

Residents’ favourite meals are cottage pie and shepherd’s pie and they all love a Sunday roast, as well as beef bourguignon and lamb casserole.

How do you organise and run a busy kitchen?

My team and I do a full briefing in the morning before we start our shift. I outline what we need to do during the day, and we work together to help each other to get everything done.

Even though it is very busy in our kitchen, I always keep myself and my team calm and ensure the day runs smoothly.

For me, HEART and Values always lead a motivated team.

What do you love most about your job?

I love everything about my job, however what I love the most is the satisfaction of residents when they eat the food we prepare and when we clear the table and the plates are clean.

It means so much to me that they enjoy the meals we prepare for them. We put a lot of effort into every single dish, so any compliments are like music to our ears and really give us the passion and motivation to cook even more dishes that they enjoy!

1 garlic clove, crushed 300ml beef stock Medium glass of red wine (or extra beef stock) Dessert spoon of tomato purée 1 x dried bay leaf 15g thyme (fresh or dried), plus extra to garnish

Method: 1. Heat the olive oil in a large flame-proof casserole pan over high heat 2. Lightly coat the lamb shanks in some of the flour – add the lamb to the pan and cook for 5-6 mins, turning occasionally, until browned.

Transfer to a plate 3. Add the bacon to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for 4 mins or until golden brown.

Transfer to a bowl 4. Add the shallots and mushrooms to the pan.

Cook, stirring, for 2-3 mins or until golden. Add garlic and cook for 1 min. Stir in remaining flour 5. Return the lamb and bacon to the pan, pour over the stock and wine (if using), then stir in the tomato paste, bay leaf, and thyme 6. Bring the pan slowly to the boil, then reduce the heat to very low simmer and cook, covered, for two hours or until lamb is falling off the bone 7. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve sprinkled with a little extra thyme
