his summer has more than just a little excitement in store.

For seven weeks, Caramoor’s grounds and gardens are transformed into a vibrant musical sanctuary, as artists from around the world come to perform and connect with our audiences. These performances take on special meaning in 2020, as we celebrate our 75th Summer Season and unveil the improvements and investments we have made to our campus as part of the Inspire capital campaign. From a new entrance into the Venetian Theater, a new box office, picnic areas, to benches, lighting, plants, and trees ... everything we have done has been with your comfort in mind, and we can’t wait to welcome you here to see the changes.

As our campus evolves, what never changes at Caramoor is our focus on creating inspiring music experiences in an intimate and beautiful setting.

This summer, you will find concerts representing a broad spectrum of music: orchestral, Latin jazz, opera performed sideways in the Rosen House, all-female Mariachi, a new American Roots collaboration with City Winery, and a fresh approach to Wednesdays with the roll-out of our Concerts on the Lawn series. You’ll dive into the Harlem Renaissance, celebrate a Broadway legend, hear the complete Brandenburg Concertos, and enjoy music from artists including The Knights, Taj Mahal, Danish String Quartet, Amjad Ali Khan, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Inon Barnatan, JIJI, Pekka Kuusisto, and Wynton Marsalis!

This music-filled day ends with the threetime Grammy Award winner for Best Contemporary Blues Album and multiinstrumentalist, Taj Mahal, who has reshaped the definition of blues in his six-decades long career by incorporating the sounds of the Caribbean, Africa, and the South Pacific.

THE COMPOSER’S TOOLBOX The wind players of Decoda present an interactive family event, bringing young people and parents alike inside the mind of a composer. Become musical detectives, investigating how a composer’s decisions affect the mood and the feeling of the music. Learn compositional concepts while exploring music by Nielsen, Schulhoff, and Balliett. By the end, you may even become composers for Decoda!

This event is recommended for kids ages 5 and up.

Written by the eminent 18th-century French composer, this Baroque opera’s fantastical story is brought to life by one of New York’s own superb periodinstrument ensembles, led by Avi Stein, with internationally renowned soloists.

New this year!

Concerts on the Lawn On four Wednesdays this summer, Friends Field is home to a casual listening experience for everyone to enjoy. With plenty of room to run, dance, or set up a picnic, enjoy this series featuring four high-energy artists pushing the boundaries of their genres. Each performance offers two concert experiences: an early set designed for families followed by a full set beginning at 7:00pm. Roll out your blanket, unfold your chair, and join us on the lawn.

Flor De Toloache

The women of Flor De Toloache fuse together influences from diverse genres and cultures to produce a unique and powerful take on traditional Mariachi music. “They don’t just sing; they could blast through mountains with their wails and gritos (shouts), and melt glaciers with the warmth of their gorgeous harmonies” (NPR).

Nichols, costume designer On Site Opera — known for presenting site-specific, immersive opera in some of the most exciting and unusual spaces in New York City and beyond — remounts its 2015 production of Giovanni Paisiello’s The Barber of Seville, for three special performances in the Spanish Courtyard and Music Room of Caramoor’s historic Rosen House. Updated for the early decades of the 20th century, Paisiello’s Barber stays true to its Beaumarchais roots, focusing faithfully on the love story between the Count and Rosina rather than the barber’s antics. After its premiere in 1782, the opera quickly became a staple of the repertoire and inspired a young Rossini to write his own version.

In a special duo set, Finnish “one-ofa-kind” (The Globe and Mail, Toronto) violinist, Pekka Kuusisto, and celebrated American composer Nico Muhly team up for an evening of musical exploration, ranging from traditional Finnish music to works by Muhly, Glass, and Pärt, and contemporary works. Kuusisto brings a fresh approach to the concert experience with “the most personal sound of any classical violinist now alive” (The Telegraph, London). Muhly has written over 100 works as diverse as his musical influences in opera, concert, dance, and film.

Celebrating the Harlem Renaissance The Great Migration brought some of the greatest minds and brightest talents of the day — an array of African American artists and scholars — to Harlem. Between the end of World War I and the mid-1930s, they produced one of the most significant eras of cultural expression in the nation’s history: the Harlem Renaissance. The movement’s impact on America was indelible, bringing notice to the great works of African American art and inspiring and influencing future generations.

8:00pm / Venetian Theater Orpheus Chamber Orchestra The Classical Theatre of Harlem Peter Francis James, director Mendelssohn: Incidental music from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Op. 21 and Op. 61 (arr. Tarkmann) Continuing Caramoor’s spotlight on the Harlem Renaissance, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Classical Theatre of Harlem offer an innovative and magical evening through a musical and theatrical interpretation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

A Harlem Dream retells the classic story, celebrating the Harlem Renaissance with vivid allusions to New York City and this exciting cultural revolution. In addition to Mendelssohn’s glorious and beloved score, the works of Duke Ellington and other jazz greats are woven into the tale.

The 22 musicians and eight actors play varied and imaginative roles throughout the performance.

Michael Gordon’s Field of Vision (World Premiere)

Bang on a Can Percussion Ensemble Doug Perkins, music director Bang on a Can composer Michael Gordon has produced a strikingly diverse body of work, ranging from major orchestral commissions to site-specific works in the wilderness, to works conceived specifically for the recording studio.

Transcending categorization, his music tells stories about place and memory.

Field of Vision is a large-scale sitespecific work for Caramoor's Sunken Garden and the surrounding field. The work features 48 percussionists; 24 in a spatial chain of moving sound in dialogue with 24 other percussionists who come in and out of view. The percussionists perform on newly-created instruments made from recycled metals and wood.

Grab a picnic, a blanket, and your dancing shoes to Lindy Hop along to melodies from the Harlem Renaissance through to today’s swing music. New Works for 2020 Trimpin: in“C” Taking the form of a 16-foot high double letter “C,” in“C” invites visitors to interact through both a motion sensor and push-buttons.
