Hello, Capital Key Clubbers!

My name is Macy Lindblom, and I’m beyond excited to be serving as your District Governor for the 2021-22 year! Key Club has always been a huge part of my life, so I’m thrilled to be taking the next step to help better our District.

Since the start of my Key Club journey, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in various positions such as Club Secretary, Lieutenant Governor, Convention and Events Committee Chair, and now Governor. Outside of Key Club, I’m involved with various other extracurricular activities including the Girls in Engineering Math and Science Club, honor societies, and sports (cross country, track, lacrosse). I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, hiking, skiing, and cooking!

innovation, motivation, and energy. By devising new ways to assist struggling clubs, execute District-wide events, and inspire our members to embrace all aspects of Key Club, I have no doubt that we will not only combat challenges posed by the prior year but experience a year filled with success at all levels.

More specifically, the District leadership team has many exciting plans that are currently in the works. We will have a variety of

both virtual and in-person opportunities for clubs to connect with each other as the year

progresses. Some of these plans include a virtual summer event, Officer Training Conference, Key to College event in partnership with CKI, a new and improved version of Fall Rally, and a series of webinars organized by our committees.

Additionally, the

District and Governor's Projects will be revitalized this year and you can continue reading

to find more detailed information. Our District Project is yet again The ELIMINATE Project which is aimed at combating the deadly Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus disease. By instituting new reward and recognition systems, we know that this is the year to reach our monetary goal. On the other hand, the Governor's Project is something that our District has never seen before. This project is called "Capital for Kids" and its goal is to cultivate the physical, mental, and emotional health of children in order to prepare our future generation of leaders. There are a multitude of directions that you and your club can take this project, so get creative and

have fun with service!

SEC-TREAS AARON Hey, Key Clubbers!

My name is Aaron Chen, and it is an honor to be serving as your District Secretary/Treasurer for the 2021-2022 Key Club year! I am a rising Senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, VA. As a person who has been involved in the K-Family ever since middle school, service and leadership have been a huge part of my life, and I hope you all feel the same way!

Starting off as Builders Club President for both my 7th and 8th grade year to being a district executive for the Capital District Key Club has been my utmost honor and I hope that I can all meet your expectations!

Outside of Key Club, I am an active musician who plays a multitude of instruments; such as violin, piano, guitar, and more! I am also a Co-Founder of a Culture Club we’ve incorporated in my school as well as holding more leadership positions across my school, church, and community.

My name is Blake Cestaro, and I’m incredibly excited to serve as your District Webmaster for the 2021-2022 Key Club year! Last year, I had the honor of serving as an LTG-At-Large where I supported the District E-Club throughout the height of the pandemic. I look forward to continuing to serve our district and help build the foundation for its recovery as the pandemic comes to a close!

I’m currently a rising junior at John Handley High School in Winchester, VA. When I’m not dedicating my time to school or Key Club, I enjoy listening to music, 3D designing online, spending time with friends, and much more! EDITOR IZZA Hey, Capital!

I am so honored to be able to serve you this year as your Capital District Editor!

My name is Izza Ahmad and I am a rising junior at Northern High School in Southern Maryland.

Last year, I served as the Lieutenant Governor for the Division 3C Sharks and was the 9th Grade Representative for my home club the previous year. A fun fact about me is that I know about 5 languages, I was born in Italy, and have 3 other siblings.

Outside of Key Club, I take part in my school's SGA, FBLA, MESA, Gardening Club, and Patriot Pride. I did tennis for the first time my freshman year and did track in middle school before that. I love baking and cooking while listening to music!

THE GOVERNOR'S PROJECT 11

Every Child Capital for Kids This project is focused on cultivating the physical, mental, and emotional health of our future generation. With all of us working collaboratively to improve the lives of children around us, we will create a supportive environment that instills a life-long passion with them!

Physical Health: Organize a youth camp

Mental Health: Hold virtual tutoring sessions

Emotional Health: Start a penpal system with local kids

The ELIMINATE Project The goal of The ELIMINATE Project is to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus around the world. This is a deadly disease that is caused by unhygienic birthing practices and kills 1 baby every 15 minutes. MNT has been eliminated in 47 countries, however, it still remains in 12.

The catch? It's easily preventable! All it takes is a series of 3 vaccines that cost $1.80 to prevent a mother and all her future children from contracting the disease.

In April of 2015, the Capital District pledged to raise $250,000. We have $45,000 left to go! We need your help to save lives!

Platinum - First Place - Tabb HS - 12B The Holiday Salvation Army Outreach focused on providing aid to local, struggling families during the Christmas season. Their board decided to help in two parts: ring Salvation Army bells on a Saturday in December and to collaborate with the Tabb HS NJROTC, to collect a record number of stockings to be distributed to local children. Platinum - Honorable Mention - Dulaney HS - 6B For the past several years, Dulaney High Key Club has always planned a car wash to raise money for their local pediatric hospital. In an effort to support a great cause in the community and promote health, they devised a bigger event - a 5K race to raise awareness of The Eliminate Project.

Silver - First Place - James Wood HS - 8 During the COVID-19 pandemic, homelessness has grown exponentially and community resources for the homeless population have been struggling. "Bags of Necessities for the Homeless" tried to spread love and positivity. Everyone deserves to have validation of support. They deserve to have warm feet and supplies needed to fight the pandemic. Bronze - First Place - Walsingham Academy - 12A The Walsingham Academy Key Club Snack Cart is a fundraising effort that takes place daily during the academic year. A different Key Club member wheels a cart filled with snacks and drinks around the school during lunchtime to raise money for our closest Children's Miracle Network hospital. They use donations to help fund charitable care, equipment, research, education, advancement services, and patient services. Read more ->

Bronze - Honorable Mention - Middlesex HS - 12B With the distance that the pandemic has instilled in the local community, the Middlesex Key Club wanted to bring people together in a safe manner. They hosted a virtual Bingo Night that raised funds for the District Project, The ELIMINATE Project!

CAPITAL DISTRICT KIWANIS TEENAGER OF THE YEAR 2021 CO LE RO STA CE "Cole Cestaro has been selected as the 2020-2021 Capital District Kiwanis Teenager of the Year.

Cestaro is a senior at John Handley High School in Winchester. He has been a Key Club member, served two years as lieutenant governor.

Cestaro earned recognition as the recipient of the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lt. Governor Award in 2020. He was the President of DECA, FBLA and was a member of the tennis, basketball, swimming and football teams during his high school career. He served as the chair of the Principal Advisory Committee, a group he established.

Cestaro was chosen by the Winchester Schools Superintendent as one of two students in the district to serve as a Winchester Public Schools’ School Board student representative. Other recognitions include the Virginia House of Delegates Certificate of Distinction.

All of this was achieved while serving as the chair for the Capital District Key Club Member Services Committee, working as counselor at Camp No Limits serving campers with limb-loss and limb-differences, running a lawn-mowing service and providing over 200 hours of Key Club service hours.

Take advantage of these months to plan for the upcoming year!

KEEP SERVING

Talk to your Lieutenant Governor on how to keep your club active!

It's extremely important to attend Officer Training Conference. At these conferences, club officers get the opportunity to learn what it takes in order to complete their duties throughout the school year.

Attending an OTC is a guaranteed way to ensure your Key Club blooms! Also, the Secret Word Clue is the first letter of our organization!

SUMMER PLANNING

Use this time to meet up with your officer board! Planning the year ahead allows for maximum success Talk over major events you want to host, membership recruitment, membership retention, awards you want to apply for, and more! It's also a great way for your board to get closer in person or virtually!

We know that your LTG would love to attend, so invite them!

RELAX - HAVE FUN!

At the end of the day, make sure to have fun! Take this time to relax and unwind after a busy school year. Great job with keeping up with school, and handling the pandemic well! We wish that you enjoy your summer months. Get energized for the year ahead! As restrictions get lifted, feel free to meet up with friends and enjoy yourselves. Be safe and stay healthy!

SUMMER SERVICE IDEAS!

Online fundraisers Neighborhood food drive to give to Soup Kitchens and Food Banks!

Going out with a group of friends to pick up some trash along roads, schools, or other public places!

Write thank you cards to our Health Care Heroes!

Make masks to donate to organizations or nearby hospitals Help supply animal shelters with toys, pet food, and other things that they might need Buy a few blankets and make Project Linus blankets with friends, family, or both!

If restrictions permit, have car washes! They are always a great summertime activity to do with your club and take donations for charities!
