WHAT'S UP IN THE

Check out some outstand our Capi "During teacher’s appreciation week in May, my home club, Parkersburg High School, held a car wash where members of our club washed many of our school’s staff’s cars. This took place on May 3rd in the parking lot of our school. We wanted to do something to show our teacher’s that we truly respect and acknowledge the many sacrifices they make to educate us." -D18 LTG Pallavi Sundaram

"Centennial High School Key Club held a bake sale fundraiser in support of UNICEF for one of their latest service projects. The goods were $1 each and included cookies, cupcakes, and more. The project took place at the high school, in front of the gym, after school. Within around 30 minutes, everything was sold out. Centennial raised $237 for UNICEF from this sale, which was remarkable considering the $1 price and the short amount of time of the bake sale." -4B LTG Rebecca Ni

9

"For April and May, members of Justice High School (2D) donated items, such as food, toys, towels, bowls, beds and much more, to the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation. The items would help provide pets and owners in need with important pet essentials." -2D LTG Erina Haque

ding service projects from

tal Crabs!

"This service project truly brought joy to my heart..." "...I was so proud to play a part in the planning process of providing an egg hunt for preschool children at Wayne Hills in Waynesboro, VA, April 14th. Waynesboro Key Club (my High School’s club), our Interact Club, and our Kiwanis—who sponsored the hunt— were able to attend. 500 eggs were distributed around the baseball field filled with delicious candies. We even provided craft tables where kids were free to express themselves by coloring and decorating egg ornaments. At the end of the day, the true gift was being able to see the bright smiles on the children’s face due to their baskets being full of Easter eggs." -9B LTG Breya Smith

"Handley Key Club volunteered to help clean up the area of a local park on May 8th. They picked up litter, pulled weeds, and got down and dirty by the lake to help combat pollution. Students stuck around to clean and collect trash even in the rain! Jim Barnett Park was left cleaner than before and the Handley Club walked away with several bags of litter. They remarked that they felt helpful to their community and enriched by the volunteer opportunity!" -8A LTG Hailey Reynolds

"Centreville Key Club made Earth Day posters. Their main goal was to spread awareness on Climate Change and issues harming the current world. A total of 15 students participated, creating 15 intricate and detailed posters that were hung around their school. This informative activity helped members who were creating and those who saw the posters to be better educated on climate issues." -2B LTG Ghazaleh Nozary

GRATE

CONGRATS, KEY CLUB GRADS!

"On May 20th, 2022 (5:30 - 7:00 pm), Dulaney Key Club conducted a Senior Farewell at the Divinity Lutheran Church. This event was a commemoration of the efforts of seniors within Key Club whose service towards their community has made them stand out as upstanding volunteers.

The event consisted of breakfast prepared by Key Club volunteers (theme: breakfast for dinner) as music was played by Dulaney High School students, medals were distributed to these amazing seniors, speeches were given by peers regarding experiences shared or lessons learned and awards about “who’s most likely to…..” were given as well. Towson-Timonium Kiwanis board members were also invited for this celebration to further honor these seniors and the work they have done. I personally reached out to DHS Key Club’s president, Erica Wang, for her insight on the impact that their Senior Farwell had. In her words, 'The senior farewell was such a successful night that brought the seniors and their families and friends together to celebrate their 4 years of hard work in KC. It helped provide a final recognition for all their efforts through a breakfast themed dinner, followed by a short ceremony to recount each senior’s impact not just within KC, but our lives personally too.'"

EFUL FOR YOU!

"Our last meeting in April was the highlight of this year! Osbourn Park High School in Manassas Virginia, r Key Club organized a "Prom Boutique" which was nation drive that was meant to help donate formal r for those who couldn't afford nice attire for prom. t formal attire worn for prom can range from $100 most $500, and not every student has the luxury to clothing that expensive, especially since prom attire pically worn only for prom and never worn again.

PROM FOR ALL

ause of this, Osbourn Park has asked its members onate any gently used formal wear and accessories h as ties, purses, jewelry, etc., in order to allow less unate students the opportunity to go to prom and ve fun with everyone else. The club was able to get nations and helped students in their community a lot! " -2E LTG Jocelyn Aristanto

N WITH FISHING

"Council High School on April 30th helped work a kids fishing day at Council Park. The club members watched the kids fish and made sure to keep things safe. The club also set up an area for young children and children with disabilities so they could fish too. The project helped their community by bringing out families and being inclusive to kids of all ages and abilities." -Conner Rutherford, 16/17

12

PROMOTING SMALL BUSINESSES

"Washington High’s Key Club held a food truck festival on May 14th in the school parking lot. The Builders and [K-Kids clubs] also participated in running it. This festival gave small businesses the chance to make their businesses known in the community and it gave everyone something fun to do on a beautiful Saturday. Many food trucks and small businesses signed up, but some had to cancel due to a change of storms later in the day. Luckily, we still had a lot of vendors show up and eventually the parking lot was packed!" -8B LTG Kayla Holloman

FOOD DRIVES IN DIV. 10

"Kroger Food Drive - Key Clubbers stood outside of Kroger with slips of paper listing foods that our local food bank needed. People would buy those foods and drop them off on their way out. MEET OUR NEW DISTRICT ADMINIST Ms. Kristina Dlugozima

What are your responsibilities as District Administrator? As District Administrator, I have the honor of advising the student leaders on the District Board as they lead the Capital District of Key Club to new heights. I am aided by the awesome adult committee members who help with everything from mentoring students in their areas to planning events like DCON and Fally Rally. I also help faculty and Kiwanis advisors with any questions or issues that they may have.

What has been your journey within the Kiwanis Family? I joined CKI (the college version of Key Club) when I was a student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. I had always loved serving my community and I found my home in the Kiwanis Family there. I served in a number of positions including District Governor. I moved to Northern Virginia after college and immediately joined the Kiwanis Club of Tysons, VA where I have been a member for almost 20 years. I have held a variety of positions on the club, division, and district level but my first love will always be our Service Leadership Programs.

What would you say was your favorite Kiwanis family service project? I have a lot of service projects to choose from - one of my favorites is probably the first service project I ever did with CKI - every week, a few of my fellow CKI members and I went to a community center and tutored students. We were usually paired with the same student and really had the chance to see them grow. Being able to see the progress a student made was awesome!

33

TRATOR

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by so many people, some I know personally and some I admire from afar. Recently, I have admired someone I knew who did not let anything stop her from doing what she wanted. Living fearlessly is an attribute that I really admire in a person and something that I hope to achieve over time.

What are three items you would take with you on a deserted island?

The largest book I can find, lots of matches, and a multi-tool - I am practical, but I need something to entertain me also! What do you look forward to most this service term?

I am most looking forward to working with the District Board and Adult Committee to build up the Capital District and fully integrate West Virginia Key Club into our family.
