Welcome to the Southern Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most iconic destinations for travellers. Yet there are still parts of the reef where visitors can feel like intrepid explorers, as if they were discovering places no one else has ever seen. The Southern Great Barrier Reef offers visitors the chance to see large hard coral reefs firsthand and join colourful fish and big marine life like turtles and manta rays for a swim. At just over 4 hours drive from Brisbane, this unique region can easily be included as part of a larger itinerary and the snorkelling is within easy reach, right off the beach. GREA

Why choose the Southern Great Barrier Reef? Accessibility – Giant Marine Life – Intimate Experiences Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is 2,300 kilometres long and approximately 344,400 square kilometres in size – which is about 70 million football fields, or the size of Japan. So how do you choose what reef experience to recommend to visitors? Here are the 3 key reasons why your clients would choose the Southern Great Barrier Reef as their next holiday destination… Accessibility The Southern Great Barrier Reef starts only a short 4 hour drive or a 45 minute flight from Brisbane. You can reach the reef on a short day trip, or alternatively you can stay on an island of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, where the reef can be accessed straight from the beach on Lady Elliot, Heron, Great Keppel and Pumpkin Islands. Giant Marine Life Due to cooler waters in the Southern Great Barrier Reef there are slightly different types of coral to other parts of Great Barrier Reef, and an abundance of plankton which support GIANT marine life, like turtles and manta ray. Have you ever witnessed a manta ray with a wing span of 20 feet in length, or a loggerhead sea turtle that weighs 135 kilograms? You can when visiting the Southern Great Barrier Reef! Intimate Experiences Tours and attractions in the Southern Great Barrier Reef are quality, generally small scale businesses, which means visitors will enjoy intimate group experiences, and feel like ‘intrepid’ explorers, receiving a very personal experience rather than being surrounded by mass amounts of other travellers.

Events BY NATURE

Whether it be crawling, flying, swimming, hatching, or breaching, the Southern Great Barrier Reef is always celebrating the wonders of

NOV - MAR I TURTLE SEASON See turtles laying their eggs & hatching on many of our beaches & islands. Ranger-guided tours are available at Mon Repos beach near Bargara.

NOV - DEC I CORAL SPAWNING A once a year phenomenon when corals reproduce. The timing is linked to the lunar cycle and water temperatures. Divers say it looks like an underwater snowstorm.

DEC - FEB I BAT CLEFT TOURS Home to 80% of Australia’s breeding population of bent-wing bats, see the emergent flight of thousands of these tiny creatures from a cave at dusk on a ranger-guided tour.

MAR - APR I MANTA RAY SEASON Manta Ray can be seen all year round, however peak season is best for avid divers. Lady Elliot Island, Heron Island & Lady Musgrave Lagoon are renown for these majestic creatures.

JUN - SEPT I WHALE SEASON Our waters are abundant with seasonal migrating whales. Whale Watching tours depart from Yeppoon, Town of 1770 and Bundaberg, however you can spot whales from many of our islands when in season.

Capricorn Coast & Rockhampton Pack your swimsuit and walking gear and discover the Capricorn region. Taking its name from the Tropic of Capricorn, this region is home to laid-back towns, quiet island life, and a scattering of pristine National Parks and secluded beaches. An enticing mix of country hospitality, modern city lifestyle and stunning coastal bays. The Capricorn Coast boasts thirteen beaches along the scenic coastline from Yeppoon to Emu Park, and the stunning Keppel Islands are just offshore with safe swimming all year round, and reef right off the beach. At Byfield State Forest you can see beautiful rainforest, visit local artisans or jump in a canoe and explore rainforest-edged creeks. Rockhampton is Australia’s Beef Capital, and the city is booming! A modern throwback to the heydays of Queensland’s colonial past, Rockhampton offers all your cosmopolitan conveniences in a contemporary riverside setting. The Sandstone Wilderness will leave you breathless; especially Carnarvon Gorge’s Aboriginal rock art paintings and delicate ferns amidst towering sandstone cliffs. Be sure to leave a little time for fossicking in the Sapphire Gemfields, the largest in the southern hemisphere.

7
