Sunset Sessions, Great Keppel Island

The Capricorn Coast is the ideal backdrop to many sporting and cultural events. With a keen focus on family fun you can’t go wrong.

1 The Great Australia Day Beach Party

Cue the biggest and brightest family fun day on the Capricorn Coast! Celebrate all things Aussie at Yeppoon Main Beach on 26 January. With a well-earned reputation as one of the best events in the State, get ready for a day of non-stop fun.

2 Capricorn King of Kings is held over the first weekend in February and welcomes fishermen of all skill levels and abilities to compete in more than $165,000 worth of cash prizes and giveaways.

3 Big Beer Festival is a celebration of craft beer, and brings a stellar line up of local, intrastate, and interstate brewers to the region. The festival, held annually in February, provides a platform to ‘give cheers’ to the burgeoning Queensland Craft Beer scene.

4 Rockynats is the greatest horsepower party Rockhampton has ever seen! Tyres will burn, the noise of street drags will ring in your ears, and drifting champs will send it sideways.

5 Festival of the Wind is one of the most popular family kite events in Australia. Hundreds of kites launched from Fisherman’s Beach, Emu Park, fill the sky to provide a thrilling spectacle in May each year.

6 The Archer Join us April in Rockhampton for four amazing days of functions, showcased by the running of the Lexus of Rockhampton Amateur Cup, Paradise Lagoons Fitzroy and the $775,000 Archer. Horse racing action at its best.

7 Sunset Sessions on Great Keppel, is CQ’s biggest island party. Get set to experience two days of live music spread across two weekends in May and November. Sunset Sessions is an annual Australian island music festival merging entertainment with an unbeatable island outlook.

8 The Golden Mount Festival in Mount Morgan is an action-packed weekend of events and activities held annually in May. The traditional events include the annual Gold Dig, Running the Cutter and the Golden Mount Festival Procession.

9 The GKI Trail Run is on beautiful Great Keppel Island. Held every June/July, this event visits beaches, climbs mountains and takes in the spectacular views. Race ranges from 9.5km - 27km.

10 Pop-Up Polo Rockhampton brings award winning entertainment, glamour, excitement, premium catering, Champagne and the thrill of the world’s fastest ball game to the city centre every June.

11 B risbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht

Race has made its mark as one of Australia’s premier coastal races. The finish line festivities are held each year in June at the Keppel Bay Marina.

12 Country on Keppel features a line up of top local and national talent every July on Great Keppel Island. Get ready for a vocal treat as the sun sets over Keppel Bay.

13 Yeppoon Running Fes tival boasts stunning ocean views and incorporates 3 distances to cater for all levels of runners - PLUS a family friendly 1.6km Family Fun Run. The event is held in July on the Yeppoon foreshore.

14 Rockhampton River Festival, held in July at Rockhampton’s Riverside Precinct, is a free entry, three-day festival filled with live music, arts, and entertainment.

15 The Rockhampton Cup is the feature race of the popular Rockhampton Jockey Club Winter Racing Carnival. With great prize money and trophies, the Rockhampton Cup is hotly contended by both local and visiting horses every July.

16 Swim around Keppel is Australia’s only tropical island swimming marathon and is held on beautiful Great Keppel Island. The event is held in August and offers: 20km open water swim, 5km, 1km, 200m and a water polo tournament. culture, and food.

17 CQUniversity Village Festival

celebrates music, arts and cultural. Boasting live music program, performing and visual arts productions, street theatre, workshops, food and market stalls. Don’t miss this annual experience every August!

18 Capricorn Food and Wine Festival is Northern Queensland’s largest Food and Wine Festival, and a signature event on the region’s calendar. The festival, held in September each year, features degustation, masterclasses, cocktail parties, cooking demonstrations and more.

19 Fitzroy River Barra Bash is held every October and offers all fishermen the opportunity to compete in one of the richest saltwater Barramundi Comps in Australia. The event runs across three days with anglers from around the country vying for their share of over $80,000 in guaranteed cash, prizes and giveaways on offer.

20 Yeppoon Lions Tropical Pinefest

Kicking off with a celebration of the Coast’s sweet golden product, the Yeppoon Lions Tropical Pinefest is held annually in October. All ages are welcome to get into the spirit and celebrate all things pineapple! The program includes a beach fiesta full of spectacular events including market stalls, rides and a family stage program, and fireworks spectacular.

21 Emu Park Lions Oktoberfest is the Coast’s largest German Beer Festival, with hundreds of culture-seeking enthusiasts flocking to beautiful Bell Park to experience the celebration. Relax and enjoy the atmosphere while treating yourself to world class German beer, sampling schnitzels, pretzels and more.

22 Rockhampton Oktoberfest is Rockhampton’s largest Bavarian celebration of beer. The Rockhampton Riverside Precinct is host to this popular and entertaining event, which is held in October each year.

COASTAL MARKETS

Yeppoon Community Markets are held every Saturday morning, 6am - 10am, at Yeppoon Showgrounds, Morris Street.

Fig Tree Creek Markets are held on the first Sunday of the month, 8am - 12 noon, next to the Capricorn Coast Visitor Information Centre.

Emu Park Lions Markets are held on the third Sunday of the month, 8am - 12 noon, Bell Park - Emu Park.

Causeway Lake Markets are held on the fourth Sunday of the month, 7am - 12noon, Causeway Lake.

Artisan Markets Yeppoon are held from 9am – 1pm across a variety of months throughout the year. Beaman Park, Yeppoon

ROCKHAMPTON MARKETS

Artizans of CQ are held monthly, 8am – 1pm. Robert Schwarten Pavillion – Rockhampton Showgrounds (Saturday’s vary each month).

Rocky Sunday Markets are held every Sunday from 6am – 12 noon, in the carpark under Stockland Shopping Centre.

Great Keppel Island

1 Bluff Point Turtle Lookout | With panoramic views and the opportunity to spot turtles, this picture-taking opportunity is almost a rite of passage when you visit the Capricorn Coast. The walking track for this lookout can be found at the southern end of Kemp Beach.

2 Yeppoon Lagoon glows with photographic beauty and is the jewel in the crown of the Yeppoon foreshore precinct. With its absolute beachfront location, 2500 square-metres of resort style pool and infinity edge, your followers will be in awe of the region’s signature attraction.

3 Wreck Point Scenic Lookout is the ultimate photo destination offering 360-degree views of the Capricorn Coast and Keppel Bay. Flowing with historical significance and coastal charm, this amazing spot is the ideal place to capture a perfect memory. Located Matthew Flinders Drive, Cooee Bay.

4 Street Art | Blow up your Facebook and Insta accounts with some of the Capricorn Coast’s coolest urban street art. From Rockhampton to Yeppoon and Emu Park, check out our outdoor installations and graffiti murals produced by local and national artists. See page 24 for more details.

5 Stony Creek, Byfield State Forest

Byfield is one of the most picturesque recreation areas surrounded by rainforest-edged creeks, rugged mountains, pine plantations and ancient cycads. Stony Creek is the most popular swimming hole in Byfield and it’s easy to see why.

6 Fitzroy River Barra Season While you’ve got to be lucky enough to hook one first, a picture with a Barra needs no words – you came, you saw, you fished the Fitzroy! It’s all about perspective... and perching yourself up beside your mighty catch for a photo will have your friends and family in awe. Fish from the riverbank, hire a tinny, or bring your own boat. Just don’t forget your camera.

7 The Singing Ship in Emu Park is set against the coastal vista of blue seas and Great Keppel Island backdrop. This majestic monument commemorates the area’s legacy of the historical explorations of Captain James Cook. Perch yourself high above the ocean, open your ears to the music coming to life through her sails, let the wind and salty air give you a sun kissed and relaxed glow, and say cheese as you capture this gorgeous memory.

8 Great Keppel Island | Put yourself in the picture at one of the world’s most iconic destinations. 17 beaches all waiting to be explored. Your underwater lens will give you the chance to snap large hard coral reefs and join colourful fish and big marine life such as turtles, manta ray and dugong for a swim. Prepare for the best photo opportunities within easy reach, right off the beach.

9 Five Rocks is a wonderful sight and another precious spot that our stunning landscape has to offer. With uninterrupted views, the Five Rocks that give this location its name are ready to photo bomb your next snapshot. Find this picture perfect spot in Byfield National Park, but prepare yourself as it is an adventure, and 4WD accessible only.

REEF WITHIN REACH

Get face down, bottom up and check out some of our most accessible reef experiences...

You don’t have to paddle far from the sandy shores of Great Keppel Island to experience some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in the world. The ability to snorkel directly from the beach is comforting for many who may feel uneasy about the deep ocean. Discover pristine and healthy coral of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

1 Shelving Point Reef is the closest snorkel site to all accommodation on Great Keppel Island. The reef sits within a protected bay, known as Shelving Beach and lies right next to Monkey Reef. Shelving Point can be reached directly from Fisherman’s Beach or by boat. This is an easy option for young families and there is always something to see.

2 Monkey Beach Reef is by far Great Keppel Island’s most valuable tourist dive and snorkel site. It takes around 40 minutes to walk to this spot from Fisherman’s Beach. Sitting within a protected bay, it is easy to access from the island. With exceptionally high coral cover and 38 coral species, you can access Monkey Beach Reef by boat or walk in directly from Fisherman’s Beach.

3 Clam Bay is a coral trout breeding ground. Access Clam Bay reef by boat. Enter the water directly from the beach and swim out along the edge of the reef at mid-to-low tide. Conditions are best during northerly or easterly winds. Expect to see juvenile coral colonies, turtles and anemones on the edge of the reef slope.

4 Wreck Beach is hidden on the far side of Great Keppel Island, and offers a taste of being deserted on a stunning stretch of beach. The long trek there is well worth it as you’re likely to see dolphins, turtles and a plethora of other marine life when you snorkel amongst this slice of paradise. If you are an ocean lover, this is a magical spot because you might be able to find the ‘treasure’ of the beach: an ancient brain coral, around 2m high and believed to be over 500 years old.

5 Butterfish Bay is a small cove on Great Keppel Island flanked by rocky outcrops and backed by large sand hills. Butterfish reef is a fantastic little spot to view hard corals. Snorkel here on low tide as the rocks are quite far from the beach. Best access is via boat.

6 Passage Rocks is located in a deep north-south channel and is a great snorkel site close to Great Keppel Island on the northern side. It is also a favourite spot for kayakers. It features more hard coral species than any other site in the Keppels due to the rocks offering a variety of habitats suiting many different species. Feather stars and fish are also abundant.

7 Middle Island is a national park with two main snorkel sites around the island. Olive Point to the north and the Underwater Observatory to the south. Once built for coral viewing, the observatory has now become a fish habitat as well as a safe and intriguing place to dive or snorkel.

8 Keppel Bay Islands boast many other dive and snorkel sites. These can all be accessed via private vessel, water taxi or numerous commercial charters. If you are interested in exploring further, be sure to check out the reef around Conical, Barren, North Keppel, Pumpkin, Miall and Humpy Islands.

BE SAFE & PROTECT OUR REEF

Enjoy snorkelling as long as you like but it’s important to watch the tides and currents. Cover up, wear reef friendly sunscreen, always tell someone where you are going and snorkel with a ‘buddy’. Never rest or stand on coral, remember it’s a living creature. When snorkelling, find a patch of sand if you need to stand up. Be careful not to kick the coral with your fins. BEACH MENU

The Capricorn Coast boasts many breathtaking, tranquil beaches offering safe swimming and endless fishing opportunities.

1 Main Beach Yeppoon is 1.3 km of swimming beach suitable for all ages and abilities. The beach has excellent access ramps, toilets, electric BBQs and picnic facilities. It is also the focal point for many coastal events, like ‘Tropical Pinefest’ and the annual ‘Australia Day’ celebrations. Dogs are not allowed.

2 Farnborough Beach is just north of Yeppoon, is approximately 20 km long and part of ‘The Big Dune Surfing Reserve’. The beach offers a good beach break and vehicle access. Dogs are allowed off leash from Bangalee boat ramp south to Barwells Creek with access via Hinz Avenue. At the northern end of Farnborough Beach is Corio Bay, a tidal inlet offering good beach fishing.

3 Lammermoor Beach is 2.5 km long and backed by casuarina-covered foredunes, with a small tidal creek at the southern end. Swimming is best at high tide. A picnic area with toilets is provided at the northern end of the beach.

Kemp Beach, Rosslyn Bay

4 Kemp Beach is a wide sandy beach with a rocky outcrop called ‘The Bluff’, which has excellent walking tracks and lookouts where you can often spot turtles and dolphins in the waters below. Kemp Beach has BBQs, picnic tables and toilets. Dogs are permitted at designated times.

5 M ulambin Beach is 2 km long. Mulambin Beach is cradled between Bluff Point at the northern end and Pinnacle Point to the south, both of which are part of the Capricorn Coast National Park. There are cave-like areas at the southern end of the beach, ideal for exploring at low tide. Picnic tables and toilets are available.

6 Kinka Beach is situated on the banks of Kinka Creek and the Causeway Lake. Kinka beach is 3km long and faces east-north-east. The beach usually has low waves and swimming is best on a mid to high tide.

7 Emu Park Main Beach is a quiet beach with calm waters. The beach has shady picnic facilities, playground and is close to shops. Dogs are not allowed.

8 Fishermans Beach in Emu Park is 2 km long and curves almost north facing. It is the focus of boat fishing, however, there are plenty of rock platforms to fish from at high tide. There is also a sealed boat ramp and fishing wharf.

9 Keppel Sands Main Beach is 1.3 km long and faces east. The beach is backed by the small Keppel Sands settlement. Swimming and fishing is

DOGS OFF LEASH

If you are travelling with your four legged friend, the Capricorn Coast is a great place to visit! Unless signposted to say otherwise, dogs are permitted off leash on all beaches before 8 am and after 4 pm (all other times dogs must be on a leash).

Day time off leash beaches are Farnborough Beach, Yeppoon (from Bangalee boat ramp south to Barwells Creek with access via Hinz Avenue) and Emu Park Main Beach (from the beach access 150 metres north of Bell Park to Tanby Point with access via Hill Street). This excludes public holidays and weekends.

Dogs are not permitted on any beach adjacent to Byfield National Park.

TOP INSIDER EXPERIENCES FOR NATIONAL PARKS

Here are the inside tips on the must do experiences when visiting the National Parks of the Capricorn Coast region.

Byfield State Forest & National Park

1 To the Batcave! One of the few places in the world you can see a spectacular emergence of bats from their cave is Bat Cleft at Mount Etna Caves National Park . This is home to eighty per cent of Australia’s breeding population of female bent-wing bats. From December to February ranger-guided tours are offered to witness the spectacle of over 100,000 bats leaving their cave. Located: The Caves township, 24km North of Rockhampton.

2 Feel on top of the world and immerse yourself in Mt Archer National Park . Here you’ll find Rockhampton’s treetop boardwalk, Nurim Circuit. This is a must see attraction, extending 25 metres off the side of Mount Archer, the 500 metre flat boardwalk offers spectacular views of the city and the mighty Fitzroy River. The national park is popular with bushwalkers and wildlife enthusiasts, and boasts quality picnic facilities and a childrens playground.

3 Views worth hiking for...

If coastal volcanic headlands with intriguing rock formations, scenic lookouts and trails through diverse vegetation spark your interest, then the Capricorn Coast National Park is worth a visit. The two most popular sections of this park are Fan Rock/Rosslyn Bay Lookouts, and the Bluff Point Circuit. Both walks are considered a ‘moderate’ grade and boast panoramic views of the coastline and Keppel Bay.

4 Camp beside the reef! Picture your campsite on pristine island sand just above the hightide mark with no-one else in sight... The Keppel Bay Islands National Park has seven islands offering a range of camping opportunities where you can snorkel right off the sand. Whilst there is no ferry service to any of the national park islands you can arrange a charter or use your own vessel. Camping permits are required and campers must be self sufficient.

5 Your 4WD offroad adventure is only a stone’s throw from Yeppoon. Massive sand dunes, rugged pinnacles and outstanding coastal scenery are what you can expect from a visit to Byfield National Park and Conservation Area . If you consider yourself an experienced 4WD adventurer and are keen to tackle some challenging sand tracks and dunes then you need to see this place. Once you’ve conquered the tracks you will be rewarded with access to endless beaches ideal for swimming, fishing or walking. Camping is also permitted.

6 Picnic in the Forest sounds like something from a fairytale but here it’s a favourite must do for locals. Byfield State Forest offers picturesque water holes and picnic spots where you can paddle a canoe or take a dip in the freshwater creeks. Upper Stony Creek and Water Park Creek are popular spots with several bush walking tracks and camping available. Picnic spots are accessible by 2WD and offer automatic barbecues and toilet facilities. Camping is also permitted.

Celebrating our location on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Robin is a constant reminder to get out and explore our underwater paradise.

2 Yeppoon Town Centre Car Park

Here you will find more than just a car park. In fact you’ll come across a pup in a stroller, a table tennis match and a lionfish plastered across the walls. You could even snag a pic in front of a mural of our region’s music stars: Busby Marou.

4 Let’s Get Crabby in a Big Way is an eye-catching collection of soldier crab sculptures by a local artist. Nestled in the foothills abutting Mount Archer National Park, First Turkey in Rockhampton is the Capricorn Coast Region’s premier trail network, both recreational and competitive, and features over 25 kilometres of fun obstacles.

HER E’S FIVE OF OUR FAVOURITE ‘FIRST TURKEY’ TRAILS

1 Bush Chook Donut forms a loop which runs off Horseshoe. This is a great trail for beginners and also a fun warm-up for more experienced riders.

2 Finley’s Rising 93 metres over its 2.4 km length, Finley’s is a great way to warm-up and get your day started. With plenty of tight switchbacks and single track through native bushland, this popular track also features the odd scrub turkey crossing the path to keep you on your toes!

3 Hanging Rock is named after the ominous boulder that hangs impossibly off the side of a turn in the trail, this track is a fast and twisty connector that links Horseshoe to the base of Jackhammer.

4 Horseshoe is a fun XC trail that runs above Moore’s Creek. Arguably the best trail in the whole First Turkey reserve, Horseshoe serves as a connector trail and is one that you will find yourself crossing many times during your day at First Turkey.

5 Scrub Turkey has tight switchbacks, slippery corners and rocky outcrops which make it a fun filled ride. The two-way trail is accessible from Horseshoe at the bottom and Turkey’s Nest at the top.

Fitzroy River, Rockhampton City reaches River fishing (threadfin on high tide, barramundi on low tide). Ramp access.

Port Alma

Estuary fishing by boat (threadfin, fingermark, barramundi). Ramp access. Ramp access also to Inkerman Creek (Open) and Casuarina Creek (under construction).

Great Keppel Island is approximately 1,454 hectares in size and is home to 17 pristine white-sand beaches and is rich with native flora, all waiting for you to explore. Ninety percent of the island is bushland and there are several bush walking tracks that disperse

trekkers around the island to untouched beaches, or spectacular lookouts. These range in duration and difficulty, from a leisurely stroll, to challenging hikes.

CAMPING IN MARINE PARKS Camping is allowed in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park, including North Keppel Island, Humpy Island, Middle Island, Miall Island, Conical Island, Divided Island and Pelican Island.

Visitors must bring their own drinking water and campers require a permit. Permits can be purchased online or from a local Visitor Information Centre.

HOW TO GET THERE Boat launch facilities, charters and water taxis are available from Rosslyn Bay Harbour and Keppel Bay Marina, with secure parking available nearby. It is also possible to arrange transport to the National Park islands from Great Keppel Island.

DIVING & SNORKELLING You’ll find excellent snorkelling on the fringing reefs at Mazie Bay (North Keppel), Olive Point headland (Middle Island), Humpy Island or Miall Island. Diving is particularly good on reefs surrounding North Keppel, Middle, Miall and Conical islands.

HOW TO GET THERE Byfield is 25 minutes drive north of Yeppoon. Most roads are sealed and 2WD accessible. The National Park is 4WD only.

Once an exclusive beach resort at the turn of the 20th century, Emu Park is an idyllic seaside village.

WHAT TO SEE & DO Emu Park is home to the famous Singing Ship sculpture. Set against a spectacular coastal vista, the majestic monument commemorates the area’s legacy of the historical explorations of Captain James Cook. A gentle sea breeze produces a musical sound through fluted pipes.

Just below the Singing Ship is a viewing deck and boardwalk that makes up part of the Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Walk. The impressive boardwalk is a must-do as it hugs the coastline and remembers our community’s brave servicemen and women. Emu Park Main Beach is a calm beach with a grassy picnic area and arguably one of Queensland’s most picturesque playgrounds. The beach is patrolled during peak times.

One of Emu Park’s popular attractions is the Emu Park Historical Trail. The trail commences at the School of Arts building in Hill Street and is spread across 20 locations. Each site is marked by an emu shaped art installation.

Another beloved icon, the historic Emu Park Jetty was originally built in 1924 and remains a favourite for locals. Stretching out from the boat ramp at the southern end of Fishermans Beach, it’s especially photogenic at high tide.

If you have a boat or just like to wet a line, nearby Coorooman Creek is a popular local fishing spot with a quality boat ramp and pontoon.

HOW TO GET THERE Emu Park is 30 min drive north east of Rockhampton or 15 min drive south of Yeppoon along the Scenic Highway.

THE SCENIC DRIVE

With 23 kilometres of coastline to explore, make sure you follow the Scenic Highway from Yeppoon to Emu Park and witness some of the best beaches the Capricorn Coast has to offer.

COOEE BAY offers a pretty little beach popular for swimming and stand up paddleboarders. The beach is just 500 metres long and best for swimming at high tide (it has some rocky platforms at low tide). Cooee Bay is also home to Wreck Point Scenic Lookout on Matthew Flinders Drive and is an undisputed “must see”. The lookout depicts a ship’s deck and boasts almost 360 degree views of the coastline and Keppel Bay

ENDLESS BEACHES The coastal drive between Yeppoon and Emu Park also offers long stretches of beach and secluded bays

including Lammermoor, Kemp, Mulambin and Kinka Beaches. All beaches are ideal for swimming. Lammermoor offers beautiful sunsets for anyone who enjoys an afternoon stroll, whilst the southern end of Kemp Beach is Bluff Point Walking Track, a 2.3 km circuit that offers panoramic views of the coastline. You can climb the 600 metre track to Turtle Lookout where you can enjoy the spectacle of turtles swimming in the crystal clear waters below.

ROSSLYN BAY is home to Keppel Bay Marina and Rosslyn Bay Harbour. A must-do, whilst visiting the marina, is to take a stroll around the docks and marvel at the luxurious boats moored in the 500 floating marina berths. Rosslyn Bay is a man-made harbour and is a popular local fishing spot. The harbour has a public jetty, boat ramps, Yacht Club, Coast Guard and service station.

THE CAUSEWAY LAKE is nestled between Kinka and Mulambin Beaches and is the perfect place for a picnic lunch or sunset dinner. It is a very shallow and expansive lake which is popular for kayaking, fishing, family friendly watersports and also offers great photo opportunities at sunset. There is a kiosk, playground, caravan park and boat hire at the lake.

Keppel Sands Township

Keppel Sands has an idyllic village-style appeal that has changed very little in the last 20 years in comparison to many other coastal destinations.

WHAT TO SEE & DO Keppel Sands is separated from Zilzie and Emu Park by the mouth of Coorooman Creek which in turn makes it a popular fishing and crabbing location. A popular holiday spot for families, Keppel Sands boasts a pub, a newly renovated caravan park, motel, local store, two boat ramps, and a lovely picnic area by the beach.

JOSKELEIGH

Nearby is the unique community of Joskeleigh which has a fascinating past. Joskeleigh has strong links with the South Sea Islanders who were brought to Queensland in the nineteenth century.

A great spot to learn more about the history is the small Joskeleigh South Pacific Museum. It highlights the role played by the Kanakas, brought out by the ‘blackbirders’ to work the sugar cane fields as indentured labour. The museum is run by volunteers and is believed to be the only museum of its kind in Queensland. To visit the museum, please call ahead on 07 4934 4854 to make a booking.

HOW TO GET THERE Access to Keppel Sands and Joskeleigh is by sealed road, the turn-off onto Keppel Sands Road is approximately 27 km from Rockhampton or 18 km from Emu Park. Keppel Sands also has an all-tide boat ramp at Coorooman Creek, and a tidal ramp at Pumpkin Creek. The Coast Guard is located at South Head with access via Pumpkin Creek.

MOUNT MORGAN

Avisit to Mount Morgan in the Capricorn Coast hinterland is a must. This historical gold mining town was established in 1882, and continued to produce gold, silver and copper for 99 years until the mine closed in 1981.

Mount Morgan was considered one of the most important gold discoveries in the world, and the mine was also believed to be the largest open cut gold mine in the Southern Hemisphere. The town was officially proclaimed in 1890 and in 1898 the railway reached the town.

Visit the Mount Morgan Railway Station which was established in 1898 and continued operating for 90 years.Today, the station is home to the town’s Visitor Information Centre.

View the mine from Tipperary Point and see the “Big Stack”. In 1905 the brick

chimney was built to distribute fumes from the mine smelters. It stands on a hillside behind the smelters and contains over 700,000 bricks.

Before departing Mount Morgan be sure to visit “The Big Dam”, the last and largest of seven dams built on the Dee River. The Big Dam, as it is locally known, is restocked annually with native fish fingerlings and has always been a favourite picnic spot with a full undercover children’s playground and BBQ area.

HOW TO GET THERE Mount Morgan is an easy 40min drive south west of Rockhampton. Enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

THE CAVES

Located a short 30 minutes drive north of Rockhampton, The Caves township is home to some of the most spectacular caves in Queensland.

W HAT TO SEE & DO T he township of The Caves is a friendly community and like all country towns has a great pub with loads of character. There is also a general store, service station and primary school.

The ar ea is named after the many limestone caves that are scattered throughout the area. The most famous of these is the award winning Capricorn Caves, which are believed to be the state’s oldest tourist attraction. A guided tour here is a must do when visiting the Capricorn Coast.

The nearby Mount Etna Caves National Park is home to eighty per cent of Australia’s breeding population of female bent-wing

bats. From December to February rangerguided tours are offered to see this spectacular nightly emergence of over 100,000 bats from their roost at feeding time (fees apply). This is one of the few places in the world where you can witness the incredible spectacle. The Archer Brothers, who settled in the Rockhampton area in the 1850s, named Mount Etna after the volcano in Sicily. Outside of bat breeding season, Mount Etna offers a good hiking trail with rewarding views.

H OW TO GET THERE From Rockhampton, drive north along the Pacific Coast Way for 23 km, then turn right into the Caves Township.

STANAGE BAY

Nestled on the coast, 2 hours drive north of Rockhampton, the fishing village of Stanage Bay really is a place to escape.

WHAT TO SEE & DO Easily accessible from the Pacific Coast Way, the unsealed drive to Stanage Bay takes you through diverse countryside, eucalypt forests, creeks, cattle stations with cows wandering casually over the track, and wetlands with enough birds to keep the keenest twitcher happy.

Stanage was Captain Cook’s second landing in Queensland. He named the water ways here Thirsty Sound, because when he came to shore in search of fresh water none could be found, thus the name remains today.

Stanage has three suburbs, which have been affectionately renamed by the localsAlligator Point (Beverly Hills) - great views and beach access, rentals, boat hire, tyre repair, day charter fishing trips;

Alligator Bay (Happy Valley) - pretty beach and rentals; Plumtree (Paradise) - boat ramp, coastguard, rentals, beach, creeks, tackle shop, boat storage, store, pub, fuel, post outlet, public phone, public toilets, camping (BYO water).

H OW TO GET THERE From Rockhampton, drive along the Pacific Coast Way for 75 km, then turn right onto the Stanage Bay Road just past Kunwarara. Drive another 100 km along this mostly sealed road, which is accessible by 2WD except during very wet weather (check before you go). Limited mobile phone coverage is now available across the township of Stanage Bay.
