CAPE COD ACADEMY | 1

A LETTER FROM OUR

HEAD OF SCHOOL & BOARD CHAIR Dear Cape Cod Academy community, Having started a new school year on an exceptionally positive note, we want to take time this fall to thank our school community for the generous support you provide Cape Cod Academy. Contributions to the school last year helped ensure that our programs are continuing to evolve and improve and that we are able to retain, attract and train the best possible faculty. Gratitude to our greater school community extends back to when our doors first opened in September 1976 with 40 students and 11 employees. In a small building leased from the Town of Barnstable, Cape Cod Academy was working to build its programs and recognized that someday we would have to build our own school. Through the generosity of many, our school now sits on 46 acres with over 100,000 square feet of classrooms, art studios, science laboratories, libraries and gyms. This year we are proud to celebrate forty years of educating young people to take charge of their learning and the paths of their lives--people who not only succeed academically and professionally but also make a positive difference in the world and their relationships. We are proud to continue this legacy and are thankful for the support our school community provides for sustaining this mission which is unique among schools on Cape Cod. As we look toward our next forty years, we are focused on strengthening the long-term health of the institution. We are growing our enrollment and investing in the quality of our programs and faculty so that our student experience is a life-changing experience. This work is not without its challenges. We have made and will continue to make changes to the way we are doing our work so we do not just grow but actually flourish. Change at Cape Cod Academy, however, will always be guided by and grounded in our core principles: Respect, Honesty, Compassion, and Scholarship. With our thanks,

Tom Trigg Head of School

THREE DAVIS FAMILIES AND MOURNING THEIR AND OUR LOSSES

By: Tom Evans, Head of School, 1980-2006

W

hen the Cape Cod Academy history is written, there can be an entire chapter devoted to three Davis brothers and their families, their deep involvement in the village of Osterville, and their quiet and behind the scenes role in shaping Cape Cod Academy as we know it today. Joel and Ruth Davis were involved first. When approached by Headmaster Tom Evans and Board Chair Bob Smith in 1981 about whether or not Cape Cod Academy might find a home somewhere in the Seapuit development, Joel explained why that could not happen, but expressed support of the school that led to long service as a board member and donor of strategic gifts of land. The school’s main driveway and the girls’ soccer and lacrosse field are the result of his early generosity. Holbrook and Sally Davis were first generally involved as interested community members, but then their son, Caleb, became Cape Cod Academy’s first athletic director. This was before our school had a gym, which Caleb seized as an opportunity to develop a crew program (think forerunner to current sailing) and take north to the Canadian National Cross-Country Ski Marathonβ€”for multiple years in a rowβ€”medal-winning teams from that warm peninsula down south of little snow. Caleb also borrowed from a friend the heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozer and truck) that he used single-handedly to convert Uncle Joel’s gift from a wooded lot to the present Seapuit Field. During that time, Sally served on the Cape Cod Academy Board from 1993 to 1994.

Nathanael and Lois Davis became involved in the school through the enrollment of their grandchildren Nat β€˜96, Jesse β€˜98, and James β€˜04. Adding the grandchildren’s years together, the number is 25. Nat and Lois were cheerleaders for everything Cape Cod Academy. Lois served on the board from 1989 to 1992. And even though the grandchildren graduated years ago, son-inlaw Mark Cote still contributes professional photography for school commencements and other major events. We report, sadly, the passing of Sally Davis, here in Osterville, and Joel Davis, in Blue Hill, Maine. To Brookie and Ruth, we offer our deepest sympathy. Nathanael Davis passed away in 2005 and Lois died ten years later. Schools have a special way of being shaped by the generosity, often behind the scenes, of the people who love them the most. Serendipity, as well as some business forces over time, found these three brothers and their families all in the same quaint village of Osterville, home to a young independent school they chose to adopt because they respected its aspirations and values, and what those could mean for Cape Cod. The school we know today would not be the same or look the same were it not for their support and devotion. Theirs is a rare and wonderful legacy.

REPORT OF GIFTS

2015-2016

BOARD OF TRUSTEES Roger Boocock, Chair Sonya Mitchell β€˜88, Vice-Chair

Thank you to everyone who supported Cape Cod Academy in 2015-2016! As we review the year and the generous contributions and outstanding participation from so many in our community, we are inspired by your commitment to our school. In our last fiscal year, 21% of our donors were new, and 40% of our donors increased their gifts, giving two and half times what they gave the prior year.

James T. Hoeck, Treasurer

Thanks to the hard work of parent volunteers, we launched a new event, Fall into the Holidays, to welcome the local community to our school and raise funds for financial aid. Faculty reconnected with alumni at regional events and our first Alumni Giving Day generated twice the number of alumni donors as in years past. We are looking forward to continued growth as we move forward.

REGIONAL EVENTS

ALUMNI

Boston, Providence, and New York City were gathering points for four alumni events last year. Head of School Tom Trigg was joined by former Head Tom Evans and several faculty members for these lively gatherings. Alumni had a great time catching up with each other and their former teachers. We are looking forward to building on these successful events and expanding to other regions.

COMMUNITY

FALL INTO THE HOLIDAYS

Jennifer Stoner and Desiree Spinner

O

n November 14, 2015, Cape Cod Academy and several dedicated parent volunteers hosted the first Fall into the Holidays event. This fundraiser brought together over 275 Cape Cod Academy parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents, and friends from the community to enjoy each other’s company, see and buy the wares of local shops and craftspeople, and help raise over $12,000 in support of the school’s financial aid program.

The event was almost entirely volunteer driven, both in its planning by a committee of 10 and in its execution. We are grateful to volunteers Courtney Bridge, Lisa Carty-Dineen, Carter Catalano, Jill Lauf, Christine Martiny, Jennifer Stoner, Desiree Spinner, Kim Straubing, and Evelyn Young, and Alumni and Special Events Manager Michelle Lifton ’89, as well as the numerous parents, faculty and students who volunteered throughout the evening!
